    After taking professional advice( MSE). I wrote to them informing them of the date I wished to cancel. As soon as the last payment was made I canceled my direct debit with the bank. I received three letters after this insisting that I call them, I never did and never heard another word. Thanks MSE.

    I wouldn't explain a thing. It's none of their business why I don't want it. Record the call, give them the required details and instruct them to cancel the subscription. As soon as they start quibbling about it and asking why, don't answer. Just make it clear that you only want them to proceed with cancelling and if they delay further, tell them you will end the call if they won't comply. Then, if they get funny about it and take you court for unpaid bills, take along your recording of the call and the phone record of when you dialled the number, and their case will fold flat.

      97channel thing is then we as agents don't get to do a full marked call and it actually helps yourself. They could get friend if someone doesn't help them with profiling

    I had the same issues when I wanted to cancel Sky after being with them for 10 years and that was a very difficult process. It took for me to lose my temper to finally get what I wanted

      There is Now TV from Sky! You can get movies sports and entertainment on subscription. That's also much cheaper than paying for their equipment, and their costly repair bills.

    Canceling sky is the best thing ever, I cancelled o2 broadband when they bought them out and will cancel o2 phone contract when they take that over.

    What I would do is complain 2 the Ofcom. I'm fed up with Sky charging extra out of my 1st months direct debit, every time I upgrade my broadband & smartass phone. That's not loyalty 2 the customer.

      Just read that ofcom do not deal with individual complaints but they deal with collective issues. They are on to Sky as there is an investigation in place according to the media I have read

    I had sky when it was free YES!! free, years ago, then they started a small charge that just went up and up and the constant calls to get me upgrade did my head in almost every week, so I cancelled and they still kept calling to get me to re join I have promised my self that I will never have sky again and kept to it, I am so pleased I have by the look of this call

    I have just cancelled my Sky and i have to say it was completely different. The operator was friendly, understanding, listened to my reasons and immediately cancelled without issue. To be honest, probably one of the easiest "i want to cancel my ( fill in the blank here )" calls I have made in years.

    I cancelled mine on Monday after 14 years. I spoke to one person who spent 10 minutes trying to persuade me to stay with various offers, but I said no thanks, I'm getting NOW instead as it works out a lot cheaper and it's more convenient. He asked in what way is it more convenient and I said, because I wouldn't be tied to a contract for 18 months and could cancel anytime I wanted without having to phone anyone. There was a long pause and then he said he was transferring me to their "Cancellation Department" where I had to go through it all again. I didn't get angry, because the second guy was pretty good and not too pushy.

    This is gold. I just cancelled sky today and cited personal reasons. They tried pushing for an explanation but I stayed firm on that and after 2 mins on hold they said there were 2 accounts at the address?? I said it must have been the previous tenants and nothing to do with me and that the direct debit would be cancelled after the last payment in 31 days had been processed. Looking forward to my freesat box arriving and not paying sky 456 quid a year for the same stuff over and over again

    i rang up today to cancel sky and i was on the phone for 47 minutes, she said she was going to ask me a few questions and see if they could do me a deal as it was her job i said fine but i wont be persuaded to stay, i said it was costing too much at 50 a month in euro and i dont watch half the channels i watch the same channels that are on freesat she said they would reduce it to 36 a month and i told them i had freesat in my home and i was going to buy 2 more boxes, they said that if i stay with sky i would be saving, if my freesat lasts 2 or 3 years i will be saving and they said that when the signal is gone from sky my freesat will not work, of course it will work you just un plug the sky box and using the same cables you plug in your freesat, and she went on and on and on i want to cancel and i was determined but so was she. and she kept asking me the same questions why all of a suden am i cancelling because i dont want a subscription and on freesat i watch the same channels as on sky and they repeat a lot, she also said that sky will fix my box if anything goes wrong as they still owned the equipment, they told my uncle he owns it and that he should pay insurance to get it fixed so it seems they will tell you anything to get you to stay. and my god the trouble you have trying to leave them.

    I had the movie channels put on for Christmas. What a load of shite. The same films every day, just different times. Plus, this Christmas (2014) was the worst for TV that I've ever known. Just repeats and rubbish. All of TV is getting worse. I find I'm watching more on here and educating myself.

    He may sound aggressive because he knew what he was in for. Virgin Media were no better with me when I phoned to cancel. After what felt like a full scale argument, the advisor reminded me that I had said they were too expensive, then snapped "Well what you gonna do when Sky goes up eh, gonna come back are you?!". I then reminded him that the call was being recorded (by them not me) and requested to be transfered to his superior. After holding the supervisor came on and told me he had listened to the call and could not stop appologising. I still cancelled. Buyer beware!

    I should be getting Sky in my flat soon. I can't imagine life without Sky! I was right to allow my discovery of Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon to spoil me the way it did!

    its crazy how you can sign up online to sky but you need to phone to cancel sky. they put me on hold for 2 hours i give up. i'm trying again monday.

    I just cancelled mine and it was fairly straight forward but I had to be very firm and not give them a chance to start a conversation about my usage. I said to the young lad not to waste both our time as absolutely no offer would get me signing another 12 month contract. He did try a bit reminding me I was a customer for 17 years etc. I think Alan starts to tear his hair out in frustration .. how many times does he tell her he doesn't want it ... how clearer can he be. I would put this down to some bad training from sky as the young lady constantly tries to get him into a conversation with an angle to sell to him when he repeats he just doesn't want it and then says he has bought a Freesat box already,.

    I used to work for sky and this lady was very good not to terminate the call, because advisers don't have to continue the call if they are uncomfortable being recorded for this exact reason, if it was me I would have told him that I wasn't comfortable being recorded and if he refused to stop it terminated the call

    I sympathise. I tried to cancel too. The first time they said they would transfer me to the right dept and put me on hold until I got fed up waiting at 5p/ min, the next time they told me no operators were available to process my cancellation (the person just took subs upgrades). I tried the website - no means of cancellation there, just upgrades. I could write in but they needed 5 days to process my letter, plus 31 days notice. By now I was fed up, and rang sky and told them I was looking to add more packages but wanted to change one of my current subscriptions. Hey presto, adding packages got me straight through and I cancelled on the spot after the usual what can we do to keep you malarky. Still havent received my confirmation letter. BTW, guess who isnt supplying my Broadband.

    I think Alan is right. When you make it CLEAR you want to cancel, they should just CANCEL.They string you along in the hope they can persuade you to stay or stay and spend less.It is irritating. I agree with Alan!

    I am going home this evening to cancel my sky. The way this women dealt with this guy who was clearly distressed was scandalous. He said to cancel his contract. Sky do not need to know why. She tried to bully and intimidate him by saying if he doesn't stay on the line she can't cancel. He guy made it perfectly clear he wanted to cancel yet she kept going on and on. Yes no doubt sky force her to use these tactics. They have done there selfs no favour with his recording. ALL IM GOING TO SAY IS. BUY A KODI BOX GUYS. NO MORE SKY BILLS EVER.

      Yeah and then when your provider see your third party streaming the police will turn up with cuffs. The programs on kodi boxes are illegal streaming and cam be picked up

    I ditched Sky for Freesat (very good with the Freetime + offering). They had a crack at trying to retain my business, but I kept to polite and they didn't drag it out like this. Since they have sent me 4 packs of shite to try and get me back. No chance, when I'm actually liking the functionality of my Humax box much more for the price of nada.

      95% of all popular programs are free on free view. The Sky box I have still works perfectly and it "*is* your property forever. I have "talk talk" for the bedroom so I can record,pause live programs and I have literally hundreds of "catchup" programs.
      I too was sick of paying £70 a month for old, old movies I never watched. Just call them, tell then you've canceled and hang up, if you have on line banking just delete the direct debit and claw back any excess payments, its really that easy.

    I had the same problem tried to offer me ½ price discount sports and movies as a special offer, thats why I chose to purchase one of those preloaded sat boxes with a 12 month gift for less than the full monthly sky package well worth it

    Cancelled my sky today and it was a similar experience. On third call I tried a different tact, I just kept saying how amazing sky was and how fantastic sky customer service is but still asked that I need to cancel the account. I think the lady thought as I was being so over top nice she didn't want to do anything to change that view. It was cancelled in 30 mins (still long but achieved my goal).
    I dont blame sky, they are there to make money, its the OFcom I blame who should fall on Sky like a ton of bricks. This sort of tactic by Sky is unacceptable, we are now in 2014!!
    There is nothing in the contract that stipulates that the cancellation process can take up to an hour.
    Never Sky again.

    Everyone moaning about sky - if you didn't want it why sign up in the first place. I just cancel every year- it's not that difficult and then wait for the next half price offer to inevitably arrive. I generally find if you're being antagonistic then people irritate you on purpose, they wouldn't be running their business properly if they didn't try to retain customers.

    I'm never going back to them. When I cancelled to go to Virgin Media it was he phone call from hell. Slagging off VM etc etc. Best bit? "Our land-line BB is superior to VMs fibre broad band..." Course it is.

    It isn't the ladies fault Alan, she is merely doing her job to pay for her bills. Regardless of where she works she is dealing with you in the most professional manner. Unfortunately, she has to ask why because she has to input on their side for their records. What isn't great on your behalf is the fact that you're being rather rude. From the offset, you were angry at an operator who isn't aware of the whole situation. Unfortunately, you're opening yourself to bad service if your attitude is consistent across any service you receive. All I can say is you may need to reassess your ability of how you talk to people, being condescending and rude isn't going to help. :/

    I recently canceled after 2 years and it took me almost half an hour of them asking me what programs I like to watch, do I use on demand do I use Sky go, who else lives it in my house. Then to get offer after offer. I accept them asking why I wanted to cancel but that should of been it. The viewing habits of the rest of the people who live in my house should not be their concern. It's my account, I'm paying the bills I should get to cancel it easily.

    I found that conversation quite funny ill be going through the same call soon I have been with sky for years and I know there customer service is very poor. You want to add anything it gets done you want to change it or leave they make it impossible. This call did make me laugh for that alone it gets a thumbs up

    Issues for the last 18 months. Multiple engineers, no fix, blue screen connectivity issues constantly, rebooting system, upgraded to faster fibre, didn't solve anything.Sky will transfer me back to old HD boxes for free. This is giving me something I already had before being sold SKYQ. My point being 18 months of disruption, sub standard product and they believe I'm getting something as compensation. I got sold a package that didn't work. I am now looking at compensation which they find hard to grasp. I paid my subscription regardless of product working which I am obliged to do legally. They are trying to say new HD boxes is comp because they're free. They don't quite get it

    Alan you are so rude to the lady, she is just trying to do her job. she is under target/pressure from management to cover these questions before disconnection.
    If you'd let her to get through all the questions you would have been done in 2 minutes.
    I actually get my package less than half price, beats free sat all day long.

    well done mate for suffering them! I had the same crap and filling my ear with all their pi** when i cancelled a couple of months ago.
    I just told them the same, ive now got talk talk and its same as yours and i get all the sky channels i want for the kids and me for a fiver, not your 30 quid! so bye bye sky.

    I've been with Skye 12 years. After they started charging me almost a hundred pounds a month for my sky and refusing to let me access the discounted rate because there was something wrong with my mobile account and since the mobile account team were awful and were absolutely no help at all I ended up just telling both of them where to go.

    they would not accept a letter to cancel, they said I had to phone them up, when I phone up they said I was 2 day too early for the end of the contract. After many calls the got the message but put my broadband on another contract without telling me

There was no reason to cancel he didn't have a legitimate reason to cancel, he only wanted to cancel, he didn't provide a reasonable reason to cancel. I hope he is still paying because theres no reason why he shouldn't keep paying. Just not wanting it isn't good enough. Simple as that, that's sky policy.

      +Old Mr T its called win-back team who does this, they will give you another offer on TV/Broadband/Line rental if you tell them to leave Sky. this offers amazing like 60-70% off but it tie you in 12/18 months contract again.

    I personally work for sky customer service, and we have to ask these questions for sky as a company. If lots of people are leaving because of price, then sky will try and change the prices. Think about it rather than recording a phone call of someone just doing their job.

    Its in the contract for them to conduct the telephone call asking questions. A bit of an attitude on you though. When you go to the supermarket to buy a shop do you bite the head off the cashier for asking you a question? Didn't think so. Wake up and cheer up!

    I’ve worked on the flip side at Sky, calling customers that had cancelled. Got some guys like you that I just let go, couldn’t give a fuck about sky to badger on like you’re supposed to. It’s a tough gig if you’re invested but I lasted about 2 year before they caught me hanging up on people so thanks sky I guess lol.

    I ring them every so often and each time i get a reduction or an offer, it's brilliant.If you want to genuinely cancel then that's fine they should just do it rather than waste your time.Personally I do it for free packages,boxes,reduced tariffs etc.

    Very simple To cancel don"t pay [If you pay monthly] Or cancel your Decrict Debit account .If you do that the SKY Computers will cut off the pay services [In Scotland] within 15 days. Simple!

      That's a bit thick if you have direct debit they can still try to take it and your bank charges you every time.
      When I had Sky in the 90s paying cash bills what you're saying worked for me that way. I didn't pay once and withing 2 weeks i was cut off. They chased me for a few years for £34!
      A few years ago i told them i'd taken up Buddhism and was moving to Tibet to train to be a monk, it worked!

    In SKY's defence, you were being VERY rude to the agent on the phone, raising your voice and venting your frustrations on her. She offered to call you back around the 5:40 mark, and you rudely refused the offer. In a call centre, you have to follow guidelines, which is what she was doing.
    You should learn to have some patience. As I understand you are of an older generation, you should know more about good manners and about being a gentleman. Disgusting behaviour.

      That is SKY's training to try and keep you signed up . He asked politely over and over to her to cancel it but would she listen ? I can tell you i would have got more rude than he was, what is that stupid woman's problem ? does she not understand the word CANCEL
      And you can't judge him if you have never dealt with sky or you would have a different story about manners.

She was the one who kept him online going on and on, i would have been a lot more angry than he was. Doesn't matter if the box records or not, she was told to cancel his subscription not give a running commentary about his equipment.

He stated at the start he wanted to cancel sky, does she not understand english or something ? If someone says to you i want to cancel sky why not say ok give your details and i will sort it right away ? Instead of saying does your new box record or whats wrong with the service. I would have been steaming if i had been him. That stupid woman needs removing.

    I work on sky cancellations and trying to force her to hurry up is wrong, due to regulations we have to read mandatory things when canceling for legal reasons or could risk losing our jobs, its not as easy as pressing one button that's why we also ask whilst loading through the process why you're looking to cancel to see if we can fix the issue and make you a happy customer again, obviously issues can't be fixed 100% of the time though

      Maybe SKY should introduce a policy whereby during their introduction they will say "Please bear with me, there are a series of questions that I am required to ask, we are not permitted to skip any of them. Once this is done I can process your cancellation or perhaps offer you a new deal. Thank you"

    Yes this is why sky tv has got the backlash from upset former customers! I myself was a loyal long term customer and also been a customer since the analogue days? I only joined because we brought a new tv ( the old crt type :) ) the newer flat screen HD type did not exist back 1996. And this sky tv analogue package was the extra for buying a new tv then? We never even known about it until that time? So we got the old big round dish installed and the system set up! and it was good to have it, the old round dish never lost the signal ever even in heavy rain storms unlike the new so called better small digital one we got in 2003. Anyway back to the point, I was totally loyal to sky and even though they kept putting up the monthly subscription I kept paying, Then after having them put up the monthly price no less than 6 times in half a year and with little on to watch I cancelled? I used the online cancel request! I then the next day got a call on my mobile from sky asking why I am cancelling? I said because I no longer need it? I was asked am I changing to virgin or BT and I said neither I am using freeview now? I got all the "oh if it is the costs" being as you been with sky for 21 years we do a lower cost deal? I said no thank you. they tried for 10 minutes to change my mind? ( least they were paying for the mobile call ) After all the normal oh this oh that. They gave in and said it cancel. online the system stated the day it go, and it did? I saved per month at least £32 since I had the normal one not the movies or sorts ( both over priced ) Now I use freeview and find that the only part I miss about the system was the channel auto changing for the recordings? As stated SKY TV are a load of money grabbers NEVER USE THEM.

    Sky should be completely embarrassed by this call! This gentleman called to cancelled and should be processed straight away! Its complete rubbish that this lady needs to ask these question or go through a script. There is no legal reason for her to ask all these questions! The only bit of info she needs to give is the 31 day cancellation process and the final bill - Nothing else!
    Sky should be embarrassed by what this gentleman had to go through to cancel his subscription - a few questions is fine but this is not a 15 minute conversation!

    I have never had Sky and I am tempted bit only if they reduce the price.You are basically not getting a FREE Sky box as the cost is built into the subscription.What are the chances of getting the basic package for £10 pound a month,agree to that and I'll buy but not £21.50 a month and all that rubbish?

      Jon Snow Having worked in retail for a number of years, his attitude from the outset just strikes me as somebody who was eager to get involved in a verbal altercation and have a whinge at whoever was on the other end of the phone. Although I do accept that the Sky representative should have realised what she was dealing with and terminated the discussion much sooner.
      I see it everyday, people just seem to enter a shop with the sole intention of having a go at somebody, whether they have a real reason to or not.

      She is the supposedly skilled customer services representative. He started the conversation with a request which just needed acting upon. He was asked why and he told her but she wouldn't let it go. She kept asking him the same question and he kept repeating it with more frustration in his voice. Why would you think that he was eager to have a whinge. It's so clear to me. Yes there are people who want a whinge and I have met those sort before but this is not the case. A good customer service person should be able to tell the difference.

    They just can't believe you want to cancel their so devastated that they just waste loads of your time I've been there with 3 mobile they just simply try and sell you other products and keep you on the phone for ages deliberately running up your bill, in the end I just stopped the direct debit and what happen next yep you guessed it the old debt collection letters started arriving at my door which I simply ignored just like they ignored me on the phone.
