Just the tips on frosting color alone was worth it for the whole video; that has always tripped me up on cakes. But the whole thing was awesome. Thanks, so much, Melinda.

My mom used to decorate cakes using those pans. I remember she made a piano cake for a good friend of ours. It was a beautiful cake! I also got the Barbie Doll cake, with a real Barbie in the center. My brother had Cookie Monster, I believe! Fun times!

For storing the larger cakes, I went to Walmart and picked up a cheap, extra large cutting board that would fit any larger shaped cake like this, then I walked over to the home storage section and picked out a clear, under-the-bed storage box that my cutting board fit into. Ta-da, sturdy storage for your shaped cake!

If you're buying a pan secondhand, you don't need to worry about the instructions coming with it, Wilton put all the instructions online years ago.

What an incredibly fun video! Some thoughts:
    1) Swish hairdo, love it!
    2) Great tips and turorial during the Superman segment, and the end result is amazing.
    3) The speed frosting segments are some of the most zen moments on all of youtube.
    4) Just overall great cakes! It's obvious that you have a talent for it, have lots of experience, and best of all, it's clearly a thing that you enjoy doing. Personally, I could burn a salad, so gimme a heads-up when you decide to start exporting to Denmark :)

Melinda, my mother baked me a Darth Vader cake something like three or four birthdays in a row, using these methods. After she died in late 2015, we found the original cake pan in the basement, virtually untouched. My sister is storing it for safekeeping and future use.
Thank you for a wonderfully light-hearted baking tutorial that I feel I could emulate, as well as lighting a fire at the base of the shrine of happy memories I have of my mother. You are one in a million. Cheers.

This is cool. I never had a cake like this baked for me before. Won't lie I miss cooking as I use to be a cook in the army. Only once ever mad a traditional Apple Pie for my home when I was like 22. Unfortunately my brothers and I had only seen the movie American Pie like a few months prior and they thought my intentions were not with the best. One had nothing to do with the other. None the less, no one tried my pie. I cant remember the last time I baked a pie since then. PS. What camera are you using. I like the quality and it looks pretty good.

Slightly off topic but cut up cakes (where the rectangle is cut up and reassembled in your desired shape like a tangram) were the bomb in the 70s and 80s. Artoo is a great subject.

This was very different, but 90 seconds into it, once the history had been discussed, I got it and was hooked. I guess I'd never thought much about these sorts of things, they were such a perennial back then, but now I've got that nostalgia. Nice work on the cakes, they all looked great! I can still barely *write legibly* on a cake, so I've got a long way to go. :)

Love the looks of these cakes! The food coloring I used as a kid made my frosting bitter, but I still loved them. I am just remembering the taste now - kind of metallic and unappealing. We had an R2-D2 and a rocket ship I think. I also made one with two NFL helmets facing off for a Super Bowl. I remember the Broncos helmet was almost the same color blue as your Superman blue.

Cake mixes used to make 6 cups of batter. Now depending on the brand you get 4 to 4 1/2 cups of batter. That’s why your 8” cakes look like pancakes. So sad so I use a cake mix stretcher recipe. 1 c flour, 1 c sugar, 1 t baking powder, (3/4 t bak soda if cake is chocolate) 1/4 c oil, 1 or 2 eggs, 1/2 t vanilla. Sift dry ingred before adding to cake mix.
