I purchased a new S&W 686+ Deluxe with a 3 inch barrel about a week ago. It looks exactly like the 686 Model 6 in this video, including what appears to be the same wood grips with finger grooves. The S&W 686/686+ is still one of the most popular revolvers in America. Great job on the review.
Nice!! I just purchased this exact same gun as well. A S&W 686-6 plus deluxe 3” talo exclusive. If I’m not mistaken, I believe they no longer manufacture the deluxe talo edition anymore but She’s definitely a beauty but difficult to find now a days. I also have a 686-6 plus 6”. Gotta love S&W L frame revolvers. The 686 will go down as one the best revolvers ever made & will last lifetimes to come.
@@nathanbarraza365 Congratulations nathanbarraza. You're right , the 686 will go down as one of the best revolvers ever made. I look at these revolvers as "heirloom" firearms to pass down to my children. I wish I had the 6 inch too, I'm little jealous, lol. Enjoy your new revolver my friend. Best wishes.
I've owned every barrel length of the 686 from the 2.5 to the 8 3/8 in. Love them. I'm now down to the 3 in, 4 in and 6 in, all in the 7rd configuration. I'm a happy camper!
I have had a 686-6 7" for two years I love it. Just picked up a 686-4 " and will get to take it to the range this week. My daughter really likes the 7". But the 4" just balances perfectly for me.
Have the same Talo 686+ model shown in this video that I purchased back in 2012. Outstanding revolver & would recommend picking one up as Talo doesn't do runs on these very often.
I am picking one up from Sportsman's Warehouse in a couple of days. Basically Smith came out with the Talo model as one of their own, the 686+ 3" Deluxe. I think that I'm going to replace the grips with some Altamonts like the 3-5-7 grips.
Good video! My take always: 1) S&W makes a fine product. Whatever model you get, it’s gonna be good. 2) If you eliminate the occasional “flyer”, all 3 of your test revolvers performed similarly. ( well presented, btw).
I agree that a 6 inch or longer barrel is usually preferable for hunting, due to its higher velocity and longer sight radius. However, shorter barrels may be legal for hunting in certain states. For Wisconsin deer hunting, the minimum barrel length is 5 1/2 inches, but it is measured from the firing pin to the muzzle, so a 4 inch barreled revolver would be legal and a 5 inch barreled semi-auto would not. For Illinois deer hunting, the minimum barrel length is 4 inches and only revolvers and single shot handguns are allowed, so a 4 inch barreled revolver would be legal and a 3 inch barreled revolver would not.
I put a Hogue Bantam grip on my 686 Plus 3inch Smith. It fits my hand great while also absorbing some of the recoil when shooting .357’s! Also hides the butt great when I appendix carry.
Between the model 66 or a model 686, wow, so hard to choose. Both are GREAT revolvers. I would have a hard time deciding. For concealed carry, probably go with a K frame. I currently carry a J frame with .38 +P for daily carry when the weather is warm. But wow to have 7 shots that 686 would be nice if size and weight were not an issue. I also totally agree with you about the Hogue grips. I put those on my 642 and I can shoot that little airweight all day at the range and have no problems.
Did you check the cylinder lockup to see how tight it is? I have an Air Weight and it is a bit loose. Enough that I may have to get it fixed. I have a Taurus Tracker that is so tight it doesn't move at all. I am kinda unhappy with my Smith I expected better from them. I love my S&W revolvers, but most of mine are old, but not the Air Weight. My Model 29 is 50 years old now and it has some slop, but it has 50 years of full house .44 Magnum ammo going through it, so I would say it has held up well. I would love to get a 686, but I am scared it will be like my Air Weight.
Quick Dubbs Hey, Dubbs! Merry Christmas...check out the Taurus 608. It’s a 357 magnum, (8) shot...remember that S&W owned at certain point in time the Taurus Co. therefore the guns look the same...My nephew owns one and it shoots great. It even has ported barrel

Very nice review and smooth delivery, but I have to ask you, how in the world do you get those guns, ammo, and targets to stick against the wall like that? :-)
Don't let it bother you. I have it on my 642 and have never used it. However, I like the fact that I am able to lock it if I ever have small children visit the house or I need to store the weapon somewhere. Most state laws protect you from liability if you lock your weapon and someone else takes it and shoots someone by accident (like a child).
Is this the Best SHTF, CCW Carry, & Training 7-shot 3" Stainless .357/9mm/.38 Multi-Caliber Revolver Ever? In-Depth Review! th-cam.com/video/y-JHw30RE4Q/w-d-xo.html
I bought a used 3” 686+ with a unfluted cylinder and it had fancy wood grips with “357”engraved on them, I was wondering if it was supposed to be some Talo type special edition that never got released as so? I’ve never seen one like it.
That's correct: they were originally released through Talo as part of a celebration of the .357 magnum in 3', 5" & 7" lengths (clever, eh?), but due to some conflict they have been taken back by S&W, cutting out the middleman.
They came stock on the TALO version of the gun so they must have OEM'd them from somebody. I wouldn't be surprised if Hogue was there provider but I have nothing to back this up other than a guess based on the quality.
Yeah. I own the Talo 3" with wooden grips but the ones with 357 embossed on them. I like the grips, have big hands and think I might like the grips on yours even better. Thanks. Great job on the video!
You have a great review there but it doesn’t go far enough. Crimson Trace makes a rubber set of grips that have a red laser built in. That little red dot tells you just were your next shot will go. 600 foot pounds of muzzle energy; probably 1500 feet per second velocity out of the muzzle.... however, those are factory ammo specifications and one would need to fire a specific round out of a specific revolver to verify the factory numbers.
Why shoot so far? You could get in trouble with the law if you decide to shoot someone from that distance. I own the same revolver but 4”. I practice between 10’ to 20’, witch is self defense...now for competition I could understand...And I believe competitions don’t fire that far! Not mocking you...just asking. It’s a great gun...great vid! Merry Christmas
3manfan - contrary to many people's belief, the word pistol was used long before the advent of the semi auto. It's a word that has been used to describe the muzzle loading flintlock sidearm, and then the early cap and balls of the 1800s. In fact if you're willing to believe everything on the internet, Wikipedia suggests that the word originated in Europe during the mid 1500s. Who cares? It's just a word used to differentiate between a long arm weapon and a side arm!
And London used to known as Londinium.....sorry, we're no longer in the 1500's or 1800's. Recent past & present day terminology has resulted that the description's of pistol to be assigned to auto-loaders & revolver to wheel-guns. When one is called the other, it can create confusion for some.
You can start with going to any handgun manufacturer's web page & clicking on their heading for revolvers & then for semi-auto pistols. This is not interesting or important enough for me to continue wasting my time engaging you in this discussion, have a nice day.
