This is a really great review! One minor note is the 5.7k resolution is the total once both cameras are stitched, it's not 5.7k x2. I've been doing some side-by-side tests with the Hero 8 and the One R myself and having a hard time picking my favourite!

Great video, informative, but I’m still wondering wether to get the insta or max. I’ll wanna use it playing ice hockey, including playing goalie, so I’m wondering which one is more durable. Like if I take a stick or puck to it, which one will survive better? Or do they both have some kind of protective case u can put on them for rugged activities?

And even if you have a phone but it's not from new and powerful ones, you'll find the same issue - app is just not compatible with old phones.
Hey Josh, I really liked that you empathized something that most reviewers about the I360 & Gopro don't talk about.... software and workflow on a PC. Most of those guys are Mac users and have nothing but praise for the Hero 8 or Max. What they don't mention is how nightmarish working with the H8 & Max on a PC can be. The H8 sounds pesky, but not as much of a headache. From what I've researched about the H8, the majority of the complaints for PC users has been that it can't be recognized when first connecting it to a computer and one has to go to the Task Manager to uninstall from there, then unplug and re-plug for Windows to recognize it. Or I've read that just using another cable other than the one GoPro supplies will work better. Have these issues been solved by now, or is still the case? I don't own any of the cameras Josh mentioned and trying to narrow it down to the One R or the H8. The Max is definitely out of the question.
@@maximusolybrius4612 99% of the time I just plug my SD card into my PC directly and don't use the gopro to do it at all...maybe that's why I have no issues. But the times I do use the gopro directly into my PC I've had 0 issues with it. I also don't use the standard usb c cable they provided me because I have higher quality cables anyway...shrugs. It works great for me though, never have any issues with it
Hello.. I tried to mount GoPro Max on my HGLRC 35 veyron and it seems so heavy and the quad flying so loud. Then my full battery at no time getting low, I got low battery warning on OSD. Should I keep using it and flying it with GoPro Max like this or do you have any suggestion?
This is probably the best side by side comparison I've seen for these action cameras. You answered questions that I didn't know I wanted the answer for.lol. So glad you focused on the workflow pros and cons. Grateful I never bought the GoPro Max now. I have both GoPro 9 with lens mod, and the Insta 360 one r with 4K mod, and 1" mod. I'm sold now on completing the Insta360 one R Trifecta..lol

The decision that gets locked is whether to use stabilization. Or you can elect to shoot in action cam mode instead of 360 cam. These changes can't be modified after the footage is shot.

First, AMAZING video Joshua. Production quality was some of your best yet. So close...but the deal breaker for me is the MUCH narrower FOV on the insta360 4k mod compared to 8 superview. For some shots I don't want to bother having to manipulate a 360 file, and just have a normal action cam shot that's stabilized.

I already own GoPro Hero 7 and just like you I am a GoPro fan and it was hard for me to stray but like you just explained you can do much more with Insta360, having the ability to change mods along with the software was a no brainer. I currently have a Hero8 and am looking to add a 360 camera for some cool looking "B-Roll" and random other shots that 360 cams can produce. If I have Powerdirector (editing software) which would make a better 360 camera GoPro Max or Insta360 One R?
Great video thank you!! I wished you had talked about protection options for these cameras as well. Contrary to normal action cameras lenses, 360 cams lenses cannot be protected really well. No ND filters, no stick-on tempered glass... The lens protectors that come with the gopro max deteriorate image quality a great deal. My take is that in the FPV hobby, lens protection options are a big deal. They should be taken into account before choosing what camera to buy. What is your take on that?

After using the Insta360 One X for a year now, I'd say the most powerful aspect of it isn't the gimmick shots, it is being able to reorient shots in post, allowing further creative control. My PC sucks, and I think that insta360 really nailed it with their app, you can very easily do everything on your phone with most free video editing apps. Gopro's phone apps are inferior and super frustrating and were the reason I dumped my Session5.

Painful... I'm currently waiting for a mate f722se since I ditched the quad in the sea... But in your case I think you can order any fc but you need to consider if you need power distribution or not. I think the H7 extreme has power distribution.
I’ve heard some things about durability on the side of GoPro being superior including water resistance. Did you fly these with the case at all? Thoughts on if either of these would survive a crash?

Your review has given me much more to think about. I did want to offer a minor feedback point. If I understand correctly, the 360 recording is actually 5.7K across both lenses. How would the 360 be for motorcycle use is there an external mic available to get the camera mic shielded from the wind. Not doing commentary so maybe some tape over the mic to stop the wind. I like simple to use was going to look at the gopro but now I need to check this out first
I'm editing in Premiere and always grade my footage, so either will be okay for that? I would prefer to only use premiere than any external apps and such. The audio is pretty bad on the 360, so I would need to figure this one out... Image quality looks fairly similar on both. Im more so looking for better features. If I were to get the 360 one r, it would be with the 1" sensor. I'm looking for a camera for mountain biking, vlogging with, and random videos. So, the one r is great as I can swap bet. 360 and 1" when needed. If vlogging, I can just use the 1" mod. If doing any action sports, I can swap to 360. But then again, the gopro 8 might be a much better option than the 1" mod?
I don’t know, still undecided. As always ones use case has to be considered. As far as workflow you could always use an iPad which I prefer for all editing if possible. Then there is the weight comparison and also lens protection and camera protection in general as well as battery life. Lol, I don’t know first I lean one way and the the other. It also should be noted that you can get $100.00 off the max through the camera trade in option(at least I’ve seen that in the past offered)
Effort totally worth it. And I love the new ending. ... if you remake the end bumper, look into the lens. It’ll be sooo so good on top of it being so good now
Josh, question... off topic. That is a really nice property you're living at . Can you tell us what state its in? Or what coast you're on or near? It kinda reminds me of parts of Oregon, (I live in Seattle), and then again the barn and fence make me think of upstate New York, (where the family farm was and Mom's side of my family still calls home). Often times I watch your videos just to see the country side. Always like it when you punch it and give us that birds eye view. And the cherry tree in bloom .. nice. *clicks video nervously while glaring over at my new gp max that just arrived a week ago* I probably wouldn't have chosen it over the One R if it didnt have a mac. I also already have a hero 8 and I'm used to the gopro ecosystem and software, so it was a fairly simple choice. And it's one solid, rigid body instead of 3 pieces connected together along with an outer cage if you plan to mount it. Too many moving parts for my liking, the max gives me peace of mind. Image quality seems about equal, so the rest i.e. ergonomics just comes down to preference!
I ordered it mainly because of the modularity. I can imagine scratching a lens and replacing the mod is much easier and cheaper than replacing the camera.

The one thing that kills it for me is the seam line and on quite a few reviews I’ve watched, along the seam line is foggy. I don’t know if it’s just a dirty lens or what.
My concern is mounting this on the quad. Are there any existing mounts for a 5" or 7" frame? I am assuming it would need to be on top in the center. One lens forward, and one backward, both with clear line of sight.
Actually I just use a gopro finger mount, I designed for the Banggod and just screw in the insta360 with the frame, you also can then use extension arms to get the cam away from the quad, which helps if you fly a top mounted battery
Why this video didn't pop up in my notifications even though I have set bell for all Joshua's videos? :( Btw Insta360 One R looks like much better experience for 360 footage... But Gopro is still the king of traditional action cams As always, great video!
Insta360 does isnv files so that you can change it in post and the app gives more options, like turning on and off flowstate. Gopro makes you do those things in camera before recording.
I'm wondering what the new "1 inch modual" will do for the insta360. With the full 1 inch sensor and shooting 5.3k at 30 fps with 19mb pics and in Raw, could be a game changer.... but yeah add another $299 for the 1 inch lens/modual...
Will deal with the GoPro workflow… Just can't ever have the Insta 360 video just stop recording like that 😳 Stabilization and quality the 1" mod ain't that great either. I would def buy the Insta 360 as a present tho :)
I still take Insta360 One X over either of these 2 cameras, same quality as One R except the stitch line doesn't ruin the flying quad footage because the lenses are much closer to each other.
@@Chris_Love I'm talking about the form factor that everyone likes. They can take the inta go and give it a bigger battery, make it square, 2.7k res (No need for 4k) , and it would blow everything out of the water.
I don't know... ONE R I hear so many problems of lens fogging. I also cant handle the super distracting red dot that the lens produces with sunlight. The MAX can become a regular GO PRO with just pushing a button is called the "hero mode" and not having to take it out of the case and switch. The red dot in the ONE R is just a deal breaker for me. I do need to take the camera to the ocean a lot and MAX is better for that. I haven't bought neither but Ive been researching for a long time what the best one for me is.
The Max can become a regular gopro but it lacks all the great features of the Hero 8 (although locked horizon is pretty good). Also, I have had problems with footage from the Max switching randomly from front to back camera, making it impossible to use the footage. In the end, I keep turning to the ONE R when I need a 360 cam.
Joshua Bardwell when you switch to the back camera do you mean on HERO mode? Cause the hero mode only works with one camera you wouldn’t be able to switch. I got no issue with that. But the ONE R fogging and the red dot on the footage makes the quality look so cheap i feel. Its just s deal breaker for me. Really having a hard time deciding but the go pro feels is more for professional use. Im waiting for the 9 to come out then i will see what happens.

Ok, you lost me with the drone doing spins and loops but the walk and talk allowed me to really compare footage. This review is excellent but you might want to skip the footage that would give someone seizures. Besides that, you have earned a subscriber because this was really good.
Nice work. I only fly micros so a full size camera doesn't work for me. I'm looking hard as an Insta360 Go though. As someone with no skill, knowledge or ability in photography I'm more drawn to the Insta360. Because of the ability to make decisions on my desktop after the fact and modify the shot to look the way I want. So, I obviously agree with you that the Insta360 would be better for most of us.
And that my friend is the key to the whole system! You no longer have to worry if you are "getting the shot!" You are ALWAYS getting the shot by simply pointing the camera. Doesn't matter which way you point it either!!!! DONE! It gets EVERY SHOT...and you simply choose how you want it to look after shooting in the software. You can literally take the same exact footage and edit it different into two completely different final videos! Incredible! :)
Make a Video on how to...... 1. Get the One R to work on Google Street View app.. camera will connect just get a black screen when i goto video or photo 2. A Work around to post to Google street View. It was so easy on the One X...... HELP!!!!! when i make a timelapse the One R refuses to save the gps data!!! im loosing my mind!

From someone who has brought a One R and returned it, be VERY aware! You forgot to mention FOGGING which is a major issue! Im buying a MAX now!

Painful... I'm currently waiting for a mate f722se since I ditched the quad in the sea... But in your case I think you can order any fc but you need to consider if you need power distribution or not. I think the H7 extreme has power distribution.
I’ve heard some things about durability on the side of GoPro being superior including water resistance. Did you fly these with the case at all? Thoughts on if either of these would survive a crash?

I did want to offer a minor feedback point. If I understand correctly, the 360 recording is actually 5.7K across both lenses. So each lens is half of that 5.7K. But that's still amazing in such a little camera. :) Thanks again for the great comparison review.

How would the 360 be for motorcycle use is there an external mic available to get the camera mic shielded from the wind. Not doing commentary so maybe some tape over the mic to stop the wind. I like simple to use was going to look at the gopro but now I need to check this out first
I'm editing in Premiere and always grade my footage, so either will be okay for that? I would prefer to only use premiere than any external apps and such.
The audio is pretty bad on the 360, so I would need to figure this one out...
Image quality looks fairly similar on both. Im more so looking for better features.
If I were to get the 360 one r, it would be with the 1" sensor.
I'm looking for a camera for mountain biking, vlogging with, and random videos.
So, the one r is great as I can swap bet. 360 and 1" when needed. If vlogging, I can just use the 1" mod. If doing any action sports, I can swap to 360.
But then again, the gopro 8 might be a much better option than the 1" mod?
GoPro protune flat is the best for grading in post. You can decide for yourself whether you could work with the footage from the 360.

I don’t know, still undecided. As always ones use case has to be considered. As far as workflow you could always use an iPad which I prefer for all editing if possible. Then there is the weight comparison and also lens protection and camera protection in general as well as battery life. Lol, I don’t know first I lean one way and the the other. It also should be noted that you can get $100.00 off the max through the camera trade in option(at least I’ve seen that in the past offered)

Josh, question... off topic. That is a really nice property you're living at . Can you tell us what state its in? Or what coast you're on or near? It kinda reminds me of parts of Oregon, (I live in Seattle), and then again the barn and fence make me think of upstate New York, (where the family farm was and Mom's side of my family still calls home). Often times I watch your videos just to see the country side. Always like it when you punch it and give us that birds eye view. And the cherry tree in bloom .. nice. I probably wouldn't have chosen it over the One R if it didnt have a mac. I also already have a hero 8 and I'm used to the gopro ecosystem and software, so it was a fairly simple choice. And it's one solid, rigid body instead of 3 pieces connected together along with an outer cage if you plan to mount it. Too many moving parts for my liking, the max gives me peace of mind. Image quality seems about equal, so the rest i.e. ergonomics just comes down to preference!
Should do a review of the 1-inch lens for FPV!
It looked like the GoPro had lots of artifacting when it was on the drone. Is that in the original footage?
I ordered it mainly because of the modularity. I can imagine scratching a lens and replacing the mod is much easier and cheaper than replacing the camera.

I was wearing a lavalier mic in some shots. The shakey cam was GoPro audio.
The one thing that kills it for me is the seam line and on quite a few reviews I’ve watched, along the seam line is foggy. I don’t know if it’s just a dirty lens or what.

My concern is mounting this on the quad. Are there any existing mounts for a 5" or 7" frame? I am assuming it would need to be on top in the center. One lens forward, and one backward, both with clear line of sight.
Actually I just use a gopro finger mount, I designed for the Banggod and just screw in the insta360 with the frame, you also can then use extension arms to get the cam away from the quad, which helps if you fly a top mounted battery

Btw Insta360 One R looks like much better experience for 360 footage... But Gopro is still the king of traditional action cams

Was the lighting conditions same with both cameras? Just do not like those no shadows look on insta360.
Yeah, neither do I, but that was only on the HDR feature.
Insta360 does isnv files so that you can change it in post and the app gives more options, like turning on and off flowstate. Gopro makes you do those things in camera before recording.
Would love a short video or even a picture directly comparing the 4k module and the Hero 8 FOV, both with stabilisation.

I'm wondering what the new "1 inch modual" will do for the insta360. With the full 1 inch sensor and shooting 5.3k at 30 fps with 19mb pics and in Raw, could be a game changer.... but yeah add another $299 for the 1 inch lens/modual...

Will deal with the GoPro workflow… Just can't ever have the Insta 360 video just stop recording like that 😳 Stabilization and quality the 1" mod ain't that great either.

I still take Insta360 One X over either of these 2 cameras, same quality as One R except the stitch line doesn't ruin the flying quad footage because the lenses are much closer to each other.

Mostly GoPros are carried through my affiliated stores rather than people buying direct.
I don't know... ONE R I hear so many problems of lens fogging. I also cant handle the super distracting red dot that the lens produces with sunlight. The MAX can become a regular GO PRO with just pushing a button is called the "hero mode" and not having to take it out of the case and switch. The red dot in the ONE R is just a deal breaker for me. I do need to take the camera to the ocean a lot and MAX is better for that. I haven't bought neither but Ive been researching for a long time what the best one for me is.
The Max can become a regular gopro but it lacks all the great features of the Hero 8 (although locked horizon is pretty good). Also, I have had problems with footage from the Max switching randomly from front to back camera, making it impossible to use the footage. In the end, I keep turning to the ONE R when I need a 360 cam.
Joshua Bardwell when you switch to the back camera do you mean on HERO mode? Cause the hero mode only works with one camera you wouldn’t be able to switch. I got no issue with that. But the ONE R fogging and the red dot on the footage makes the quality look so cheap i feel. Its just s deal breaker for me. Really having a hard time deciding but the go pro feels is more for professional use. Im waiting for the 9 to come out then i will see what happens.

It just depends on how much you zoom in the FOV. I also heard from one person who said he had problems with motorcycle vibration on the insta360.
Ok, you lost me with the drone doing spins and loops but the walk and talk allowed me to really compare footage. This review is excellent but you might want to skip the footage that would give someone seizures. Besides that, you have earned a subscriber because this was really good.

Nice work. I only fly micros so a full size camera doesn't work for me. I'm looking hard as an Insta360 Go though. As someone with no skill, knowledge or ability in photography I'm more drawn to the Insta360. Because of the ability to make decisions on my desktop after the fact and modify the shot to look the way I want. So, I obviously agree with you that the Insta360 would be better for most of us.
And that my friend is the key to the whole system! You no longer have to worry if you are "getting the shot!" You are ALWAYS getting the shot by simply pointing the camera. Doesn't matter which way you point it either!!!! DONE! It gets EVERY SHOT...and you simply choose how you want it to look after shooting in the software. You can literally take the same exact footage and edit it different into two completely different final videos! Incredible! :)

Make a Video on how to...... 1. Get the One R to work on Google Street View app.. camera will connect just get a black screen when i goto video or photo 2. A Work around to post to Google street View. It was so easy on the One X...... HELP!!!!! when i make a timelapse the One R refuses to save the gps data!!! im loosing my mind!
