    This was like an entire 10 hour Udemy Course in a few minutes. "Just hit RECORD" is the best tip of all. Every time I decide I need to do a shoot, my brain comes up with reasons to NOT do so at this time. I do a countdown from five, grab the camera, mic, and tripod, and go.

    • @VicBarry
      @VicBarry  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Peter, thanks man. Really appreciate that. Totally agree. Once you do press record all the pre stress and over thinking can go away really quickly

      @@VicBarry I am completely mystified about shooting video in Manual Mode on my ZV1. I have watched all your ZV1 videos (and many others as well), and gone through the manual. I wish there was a meter to view with a simple shutter speed dial and aperture dial like my old Nikkormat camera. What am I missing. I can set ISO. I have 24P at 1/50 shutter set (so I guess that takes care of shutter), so how do I see a meter to adjust aperture, and make further decisions on ISO manually?

    • @peterziggyw
      @peterziggyw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@VicBarry Never mind my "manual video" dilemma. I just spent some time fiddling with it (like a child figuring out a new smartphone). I'm still not aware of how to see an exposure meter yet, but I figure I'll bump into it eventually. Now I just need to shoot lots of footage today in manual to lock in my ability to use the controls more natually. Thanks for your excellent videos. (By the way, this is not my "creator" channel. My new efforts are on the Fellow Humans Club channel. Those are my Sony ZV-1 videos so far).

    • @peterziggyw
      @peterziggyw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@VicBarry Good thanks. I saw that there is a meter right in front of my eyes as I make manual adjustments. Now I know how the pros attain camera skills--SHOOT SOME DAMN VIDEO AND LEARN AS YOU GO. Thanks for your inspiration. Your videos are examples themselves of the tips you provide.

    I love that you're HONEST and actually tell people that they can't be shooting on junk and expect it to fly on YT. SO many creators say the gear doesn't matter while shooting with top of the line cameras. They know it matters. You don't need $15k worth of equipment, but that 7 year old iPhone probably ain't gonna cut it. Thanks for being REAL about it!

    Hi Vic! Amaaaaazing video as always! Thanks so much for helping us newbies! 🥰 question tho -- im filming with my ZV-1 (which you made me buy!! 😂) using 1080p 60fps but everytime i try to film, like, trees while in a moving car, once I upload it on TH-cam, it pixelizes! How do you make this sharp on youtube??

    • @VicBarry
      @VicBarry  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gail, thanks :) Few things, what bit rate are you rendering you're video out at before you upload? If it's a low bit rate it's gonna be pixelated in places. I'd suggest rendering out in 4K as TH-cam gives more bandwidth to 4K files and also applies less compression so the video will look better. Also worth checking when you're viewing back the video what resolution it actually is. Let me know does this make sense?

      Thanks Pamela. If you’re only shooting outside then the GoPro will be good. You’ll probably have to look at a mic for the GoPro as well (and they’re a bit awkward and fiddly) - indoor shooting with the GoPro will be a problem unless you have a really good lighting situation.GoPros are great but unless you’ve a specific need for one then I’d have a rethink depending on what you’re going to be doing

    Again Vic, you've hit the fix. Not only do you sound natural, your editing is superb. I'm learning oodles from your videos. I particularly like your 9-second mind-bore clip tip. I was always wondering how many and when to insert changes. Hey, quick question. I noticed you hac a second camera angle in this video. You had a quick side profile and leg-up viewing angle. How important are these inserts vs just doing b-roll + front shots? If using a second angle, will a main camera (mirroless Sony) and second smartphone work? Your thoughts?
    Okay, that was two questions. Oh, and the not winging it was a brillant tip as well. BOOM!

    • @VicBarry
      @VicBarry  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Bill, thanks for the kind words. Really appreciate. You can 500 camera angles but they won’t matter if the story / idea doesn’t exist. That aside though, yeah. It helps refresh the brain.
      As for a smartphone doing second angle, absolutely but very much depends on the phone to be honest. If the quality or look of the video from the phone is totally different from the main camera then it’s going to be a jarring experience for the viewer and that’s not a good thing.

    • @VicBarry
      @VicBarry  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a dedicated teleprompter for the ZV-1 and small cameras. As long as the camera isn't recording the lens will shut down to conserve power. They're might be an autopower off setting that makes this unlimited, but off the top of my head I can't remember

    Great tips Vic. I definitely need to take some of that on board. With regards to shooting in manual, this is something I want to do, but doing hiking videos, I'm a talking head then doing scenery shots or b-roll, it just isn't practical to be shooting manual, or am I wrong?

    • @VicBarry
      @VicBarry  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey dude. Yeah I get that totally. Manual does need constant work. Decide on the look you want and then use either aperture or shutter priority. Aperture priority will get you a blurry background while a 1/50 shutter speed in shutter priority will get you that cinematic motion blur. Potentially keep iso on auto. Definitely experiment and see which one works best but in either case the camera does a fair whack of the heavy lifting. Does this make sense?

    Vic, this is very helpful for someone new to this game! I am looking to do recording of myself (college professor) for video lectures and just want it to be a bit more sophisticated (and keep the students interested!) for 3-7 minute videos to introduce the topic each week. Also, as I have a Zoom meeting a couple of times a semester, thought these skills could help there as well. I have a Sony A9 for my regular photography (like to shoot wildlife) and have been thinking about the new Sony A7IV, but worry that if I use those two cameras together I could have color science issues. I have been thinking about getting 2 Sony ZV-E10s so that things are the same (setup, color science, etc.) and this would be considerably cheaper ($2498 vs. $1400) which would give me money for other things (lighting, stands, mics, etc.).

    • @VicBarry
      @VicBarry  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Robert, thank you. There will be subtle differences but I’d argue that the majority of folks won’t notice them too much if at all. Just make sure you’re using the same picture profiles between the two cameras.
      Zve-10 is a great camera. Unless there is a specific need for the other one then the 10
      Is defiantly worth seriously considering. Hope this helps

      Can you make a video that's all about getting the most out of cheap microphones? I get that you need to stay close to the mic, you gotta avoid plosives, watch out for the proximity effect...
      but what I struggle with is EQ'ing it and "knowing when to stop" with compression. It's easy not to do those things, but it doesn't sound great.
      The mic I use is just the ModMic USB, and an omni-directional from a cheap headset. The omni directional doesn't sound bad, it doesn't have any filters built-in so it doesn't sound awful like most headsets. however, I don't know how to get more from it.
