    Dan, a few years ago I stumbled across a video of a weird guy digging for gemstones on the side of the road with his boys. It was a beautiful example of family time well spent. I subscribed to your channel right then and I have never been disappointed. I think you are a wonderful person and the people you share you time with are lucky to have you.

      This is for you,♥️ and well deserved matter of fact. I think sometimes TH-cam creators become immersed in their ongoing and without a cyber team it becomes hard to respond and recognize all commenters but I think your comment is very heartfelt heart warming and it's cool to hear how someone from TH-cam could impact someone else's life in a positive way we need more of that in the world. I can only dream to have the amount of followers as him but I don't put as much time and effort because of my ongoing is in life. but will be trying to make a point to reach out to people like yourself it's a beautiful thing go team Good💪🏼♥️🤳🏻

    Love your enthusiasm the joy you have in your elements makes me jealous not to be in your circle of friends & living in such beautiful country. If a person is feeling down....going thru hardships....they just need to watch Dan Hurd among mother natures enjoying her many gifts...! How can anyone feel down when around Dan Hurd...!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank You for Sharing, Dan.....glad your heart surgery went well you are still here & doing what you love. My area of expertise was in medicine & I want you to know this & you tell this to your loved ones for so often heart patients are not told about this. If you ever start having heartburn that persist 3 days or more....nothing is easing it....TO THE ER RIGHT THEN NO WAITING....WHILE BEING DRIVEN THERE A LOVED ONE ON THE PHONE W/YOUR CARDIAC DR/SURGEON YOU DO NOT PUT THIS OFF, DAN....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I saved my brother in law when he had cardiac issues My Sister called told Me his symptoms I got him in w/the best Vascular Surgeon & the right tests done.....for as we know there are those who will do unnecessary tests etc just to drain insurance & our bank accounts. He had several more years but did pass away. At the time our life paths separated us....when he died & I learned about what happened before he died.....so unnecessary. For over a week he complained about heartburn that just would not go away & not anyone knew what this was alerting to. Very sad that something like this happens. so Dan.....plz leave me a response that you read this your family knows.....share this info w/others because so often too many don't know what this dangerous symptom is announcing. Take Care Dan & Fam'

    i use to fossick for agates like that near me but ours are blue. anyway the host rock they are found in here is hardened volcanic ash and i was told the tear drap shape has to do with the way molten material was flung through the air and then landing in the ash creating the pockets. im kind of curious if your bed rock is actually an ash layer over ancient soils.... dont get me wrong ive seen petrified ash falls over 40m thick. PS they look like ancient hand axes

    At 24:20 in the video there is a starfish shaped pattern. I assume that out one point a long time ago this agate would have been a geode and I'm thinking that that star shape pattern is when the geode was closing so it would be continuously solid. Any comments?

    I was down in Texas one year and stumbled on a big cut of lava stone along a piece of highway with a no stop order. I could se a whole wak of white nodules on the black rock. I went into the next town and grabbed some milk crates. I stopped on the highway and filled 3 crates in a flash. I got back to Canada and opened one up. So nice. From white to a dark caramel brown, swirled like butterscotch ice cream. Keep your eyes open Dan. Cheers.

    Hi Dan, all of those agates are nice, those bigger ones however are just awesome. Glad you took the time to show us the cut pieces, it gives us a better appreciation of the pieces that you took out.
    An older specimen miner I spoke with some time back told me once you find a good piece “dig away” from the specimen, his suggested that however big (diameter) of the rock or specimen is then that is the distance you start away from it, then work your way back towards it, he said it minimises stress fractures in good pieces even though it takes a bit longer. I have not done any of this kind of digging so I don’t know if this is correct. I would be interested to know if you think this would apply to those big clunkers, or if this would be more suitable to more fragile specimens.
    Great video though, kept me enthralled till the end. I found myself considering the old miners words while watching you dig out those bigger pieces and wondered if he was giving me good info or just his personal digging method.
    Keep Safe & Keep Rockin & you keep looking after yourself.

    I wonder if it is possible to drill LED sized holes in the agate? I think it would make a nice LED display using red, green and or multicolored light changing LED

    • @Skinflaps_Meatslapper
      @Skinflaps_Meatslapper 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure, it's fairly easy to do with diamond bits. They make twist drills, spade, and hole saw type bits with a sintered diamond coating just like the rock saws used to slab the agates. Find a stable area without cracks or defects and go slow with light pressure, use lots of water to keep it all cool, and keep the bit straight and centered. Be prepared for the agate to break though, sometimes there's a weak spot you can't see that'll cause it to split. The thicker the slab, the less likely they are to break. Alternatively, an agate split in half can be illuminated from the back with multiple LED's drilled through the rind. Position your LED's in the hole or holes you've made and either use epoxy or hot glue to seal it up, then run the wires through a wooden base or frame supporting the agate to a battery pack or plug.
      Most of the pretty agates aren't all that great at transmitting light length-wise due to the banding though...sometimes it'll light up great at the base but hit a band that'll essentially stop the light from traveling any further, leaving the top unilluminated. Occasionally you'll find agates that transmit light really well but they don't have the most interesting patterns and banding. Large chunks of chalcedony (basically the same as agate, but no banding) are ideal for that sort of thing. Another light to try is UV, many of the agates I've found have been quite UV reactive and show banding that is otherwise invisible.

    I liked the way the slice of the huge one was yellow when light is shined through it but bluish gray when it was lying down flat on a surface that's fascinating I would have expected it to be the same color only brighter when lit from behind.

      Beware of this guy folks. He's either a sleaze or a scammer. He focusses on women and has used the usernames David Henry, William Rob911, Walter E piatti, morrisonscott429, Henry William, Robert William, and now Drake Milly. Take a scroll through the comments and check his replies...

    Years ago I had a cousin that used to cut agate slabs and he made wind chimes out of them, they were really cool and made beautiful music.

    I've seen a pump head attachment for a stihl kombi. But I guess it's just as easy to bring an electric pump since you have a generator. I'm in BC too, in the lower mainland. I'm looking into gemstone hunting and geode hunting with my daughters. any tips?
