  • Head to sponsor www.squarespace.com/nostalgia... to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code NOSTALGIANERD....The Million Dollar HomePage was possibly, the most brilliant, yet simple internet idea ever. Conceived in 2005 by Alex Tew, milliondollarhomepage.com represents the perfect piece of viral marketing, and one that still exists. I did some digging, collected some research, and during the process, managed to buy a piece of this important piece of internet history.

    24:09 I’m very glad the Internet Archive is still very active. It’s extremely helpful in showing today’s audience how things used to be, especially for sites that are long since defunct. I just wish YT weren’t so picky in allowing us to link to such sites in comments.

    • @Nostalgianerd
      @Nostalgianerd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      The Internet Archive is a truly incredible resource. Even more so, that they had such foresight to start it, in the 90s.

      YT allows me to put Internet Archive links in the descriptions of my own videos, but the moment I even attempt to describe how to reach such old sites in comments on other people’s videos, it’s hit or miss as to when / if I can. It’s quite frustrating when I want to quote original material from 1996.

    • @theonlybilge
      @theonlybilge 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      My reply keeps getting auto-deleted
      The Internet Archive is my source for game ROMs
      I was trying to add a reply with the link but even when I replace all special characters with (dot) and (slash) it gets deleted.
      My only issue with the internet archive is that they have removed Wayback archives by request of scummy individuals. That's why sites like archive today exist.

    • @theonlybilge
      @theonlybilge 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Apparently saying "search for no intro romsets on the internet archive, an entirely legal website which cannot be sued for copyright infringement" will get a comment automatically deleted.

    I really liked the idea of owning a little part of Internet history. It took more work than I was expecting but I did manage to find an unregistered domain linked to from the Million Dollar Homepage. It’s now mine and, in a way, so is the 30x10 link on the site I guess.

    I thought it was stupid when it came out. But it's really sort of a metaphor for the internet itself, or rather how it is seen by marketroids: a blank space on which to scribble advertisements, or which you can sell parts of to admen to become rich.

    Has the MDHP ever needed to be updated? Some ads use other company's logos, e.g. ebay and Yellow Pages, suppose they complained about unauthorized use.

    I'm actually familiar with the artist who made the fursuit in the image on the Unstable Gallery.
    Edit: Their Twitter has been taken over by an NFT account. So the same thing that's happened to a lot of the links on the Million Dollar Homepage happened to the Unstabe Gallery.

    I caved and bought a link when I finally found one that was available. Only registered it for a year though, might put up a gag there or something.

    May or may not have tabbed away from this for like 10 minutes trying to find the same Thomas theme cover that he used
    (I never did find it)

    Batracer, an online racing manament game, also has a similar pixel based sponsorship section.

    Are these videos compressed more than they used to be before uploading? I keep seeing pretty bad compression as of late...
