SHE DID IT!!!!! Correction: Akwafina was the first Asian American to win the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. Michelle Yeoh is the first (non-American) Asian to win the award in 2023. Thanks to Skylar Quan for pointing this out!
I'm rooting for Michelle Yeoh, it's so hard for her to have a seat at this table. She also worked really hard for that role in Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Sometimes, (or) the reason why BAFTA winners tend to Match the OSCAR because of its scheduled telecast. You see, the Most often preceding award ceremony before the Oscars is the BAFTA. The BAFTA followed the SAG. The scheduled telecast of the BAFTA most often held during the time the Academy's voting process are conducted. Now, the SAG was scheduled after the BAFTA and during or before the Academy opens its voting. Yeoh won the SAG. She also won the Independent Film Spirit Awards which was given during the Voting process of the Oscars. I really hope she wins the Best Actress. I am a Cate Blanchett fan since her International breakthrough Elizabeth (1998). She also won the Critics Choice, Golden Globe -Drama and BAFTA for that role, same with Tar (2022) ending up losing to Gwyneth Paltrow which won the Golden Globe-Musical or Comedy and SAG, the same award precurssors Michelle Yeoh won. In 1999, the BAFTA was held right after the Oscars, and the SAG was before. SAG was also held during the Voting Process of the Oscars. Cate, I love you, but I am gonna give this one to Michelle.
I think Cate is indisputably one of the finest actors in our time. But did she necessarily win her 3rd Oscar for Tar raised some doubt in the academy, as a 3rd win usually must be justified by transcending breakthrough as well as seniority. On the other hand, it just seemed to be the perfect timing to award Michelle Yeoh who also gave a stellar performance in a phenomenal film. There was massive support and enthusiasm in the industry and movie goers to see Michelle Yeoh make history!
Legendary actress Linda Hunt once said, “There was an Indonesian phrase in the film (A Life Of Living Dangerously), which translates into English as “Water From The Moon.”, and it means that which is an attainable….the impossible,…. that which one can never have or know”. Michelle Yeoh is the water from the moon….40 years of impeccable contributions to the industry and in the world of cinema. Her sole performance in this cleverly brilliant and ingenious film by the Daniels, “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, is a masterpiece of sincere emotion. She gives a landmark performance. It is both death-defying and emotionally powerful-an increasingly rare combination. I’d compare her to a bottle of fine wine, she’s constantly evolving and gaining complexity….. I hope the academy voters would give this incomparable actress this once in a lifetime opportunity to be the first asian actress to win the top honour.
Linda Hunt's performance was in "The Year of Living Dangerously," brilliant performance in a terrific film (Mel Gibson notwithstanding). I love Michelle Yeoh, her performance in EEAAO, and the movie itself. Hoping she wins the Oscar.
everything everywhere all at once sweeps everything, PGA, DGA, WGA, SAG, critic choice. all of those wins will drag michelle yeoh for the win as well. it's like coda last year. after it won, SAG, PGA, and WGA, it ended up winning best picture.
There are more younger voters in the Academy. I think they are looking for more authentic/organic performances. Tar feels like a movie made only to be Oscar worthy that would only be given to certain performers who have already been deemed to have Oscar worthy talent. I wouldn't be surprised if Jennifer Lawrence was the next call if Kate turned it down. Yeoh's performance seems more organic and more relatable too.
4:02 She's not the first asian actress to win the best actress in musical or comedy at Golden Globe.. Awkwafina was the first Asian descent actress to win when she won in 2020.
Another reason I think Michelle will win is because I think Cate is straying away from the awards. After her speech at the Critics Choice and even the BAFTAS, it doesnt sound like she wants to win anymore and others to take the trophy, particularly Michelle who she is very fond of
Funny how you can win many Critics associations and lose the Critics Choice 😅 And as SAG goes, remember Viola won twice and went to lose to Meryl and Frances (3rd. Oscar wins!) both BAFTA winners as Blanchett is. Renee lose to Nicole, Julie to Marion, Glenn to Olivia and so on... SAG? meh... Chillax, don't raise your hopes that high! 🤪
it also goes the other way around quite often that actresses winning bafta ending up losing at oscar or not nominated for oscar. sarandon won bafta, lange won oscar. thompson won bafta, sarandon won sag and oscar. blethyn won bafta, mcdormand won sag and oscar. dench won bafta, hunt won sag and oscar. blanchett won bafta, paltrow won sag and oscar, bening won bafta and sag, swank won oscar. dench won bafta, berry won sag and oscar. johansson won bafta, theron won sag and oscar. staunton won bafta, swank won sag and oscar. mulligan won bafta, bullock won sag and oscar. riva won bafta, lawrence won sag and oscar. scanlon won bafta, chastain won sag and oscar. out of 87 years of bafta, 36 actresses that won bafta ended up winning oscar, and out of 29 years of sag, 20 actresses that won sag ended up winning oscar. so bafta winners have 41% chance of winning oscar, while sag winners have 69% chance of winning Oscar.
@@minavamp2811 You missed the point! I talked about when a sympathy SAG win was trumped by a deserving Bafta - Oscar winner. Specially for a third time. But great data 😁
@@gonaarc2612 michelle yeoh definitely is not a sympathy vote. her performance is fantastic and most critics will agree. as far as who is better cate or michelle is all subjective. adding on top of michelle performance is she has a narrative going for her to be the first Asian actress to win best actress Oscar, the same narrative when halle berry became the first black actress to win best actress Oscar beating out the favorite sissy spacek, and bafta winner judy dench, that year. coincidently, halle also won sag that year. had cate not won an Oscar, then voters will definitely give it to her. also another factor is michelle movie is a clear front runner more than any other movie this year, and it will help her to win tremendously. it's the same when frances mcdormand won for nomadland when she had won only 1 precursor award that year, but because of her movie was a front runner she ended up beating out viola davis and carey mulligan. so in the end, all the stars are lining up for michelle yeoh to win the oscars, but if cate ends up winning, then i'm totally fine with it and happy for her, because cate deserves it as well base on her performance.
