johnny you and eck are the only reason the offseason is bearable. thank you for your consistent top-notch videos.
THG, Johnny, Eck, and OhNyquist are all amazing and gifts from the hockey gods
THG is the goat in my opinion.
Haha yeah exactly those two and I like also that hockey guy. Dolyny, oilers nation and top shelf are all click bait and rumours without substance

@@evann-t2915 Love those channels. Also, RTH (Rob talks hockey) has awesome videos! Not as frequent as the other guys but he makes great original hockey videos.
Edmonton fans are genuinely respectful when they see a current or former Oiler in public.
Yeah, it isn’t like a bunch of star struck lunatics follow them around. I’ve seen a few past and present Oilers players around. I just give a subtle nod and a hello.
I remember when Doug Weight came back as a coach with the NYI to the Oilers and he was cheered. Generally speaking, other than with Pronger because that was such a poorly handled situation, the Oilers generally show love to their former players and coaches.
I like the fact that 2 of the best players in the league are in a Canadian market. That's got to be sticking in Bettman's craw. I'm sure he'd rather have them on a high-profile US team. Glad to see the OIlers making sure these 2 guys stick around.
Maybe Bettman doesn't like it but the Oilers have an owner who is his boss just like any other team
Delusional
@@gallydex3566 Can you explain? What's delusional about what was said?
@@Rometiklanthere’s no valid conspiracy for Canadians teams getting screwed lol. Taxes is the only thing I can see that’s a negative for the Canadian markets
Oh stop it. Canadian teams suck because nobody wants to live in Canada including Canadian players lol
Dude the decade of darkness almost ruined enjoying even the good teams for me. There is deep trauma and the losses still hurt more than the wins feel good.
I feel like that with Montréal right now
Tbh I think it’s better for Montreal because I think there a lot of injuries who knows what a completely healthy team can do, you have a great coach, and you have star players that don’t take a ridiculous amount of cap space
Very well said...awesome take !
@beangirl6017 MTL went to a cup final, and immediately started a rebuild.
It isn't even remotely the same lol
I feel ya, man. It's why I'm averse to the royal blue jerseys- those don't remind me, being born in 1999, of Cups. Those remind me of suck.
Never been an Edmonton fan but these 2 have made me watch this team all the time that's how much these 2 are important to this franchise. I hope they win a cup soon.
Congrats... your Edmonton fAN!
For all his faults, one thing Ken Holland does well is inspire loyalty among his players (Detroit), now Edmonton.
The biggest heartbreak was losing the cup to carolina... damn that really hurt especially losing our goalie.
It hurts as a flames fan that you get to keep your stars and we don’t, but I’m ok with a Canadian team having a real good shot at a cup. Even if it is Edmonton
As long as Vegas loses, life is good
I love how the video opens with "they won 4 Cups in the 80s, nobody could touch that" when there was literally another franchise that did it first in the 80s.
Oilers won 5 cups in the 80's if you include 89/90 and were pretty dominant the whole decade. If the league and owner wasn't what it was and their top players weren't sold off for cash, they would have probably had a few more cups. Made it to the finals in 83 too. I get what you are saying about the islanders, but, I wouldn't argue with a video stating that the Oilers won the 80's.
@@MrMaxtaurusthe NHL felt no Canadian team would win the Stanley Cup. The Edmonton Oilers were a WHA expansion team and became the most successful team in professional sports history.
@MrMaxtaurus no, but they did have Bossy, Potvin, Smith, along others so your point is kind of moot and reeks of arrogance.
@@MrMaxtaurus This is just such a weird thread... There are countless rankings of the best teams ever. The 80's Oilers are almost always ranked as the best team ever. There are few instances where Montreal in the 70's were ranked the better team. The islanders aren't even in the top 3 usually. It's fine if you want to live in a small homer bubble and believe the 80's islanders are the best but to go out of your way to call out Johnny Hawkey as if he were crazy for stating what the overall consensus actually is, says more about you, then about him. At the very least you could say to yourself, it's a close call and I could see how he would think that and just let it slide. Just strange how people have the need to be confrontational for absolutely no reason.
Holland has showed Connor and Leon that the franchise is willing to make the necessary changes to getting better every year which is exactly what they value. What other franchise can promise that and more importantly fit both of them under contract so they can still play together?
Honestly I think it's 100% the Gretsky factor, connor would be playing in Buffalo if that was where Gretsky won all his cups.
McDavid & Draisaitl are just Crosby & Malkin 2.0, except neither have a long list of injury history nor a Stanley Cup.
Except neither McDavid or Leon can play remotely close to the level of defense or two way game Crosby can.
@@ChildofbhaalFact check: False. McDavid led the league in takeaways last season.

@@brendannell2193 I wish people wouldn't just off a tangent just because they don't like two players. The Oilers are good enough to win and have locked up many key assets.
@@brendannell2193this guy is just a hater. Look at his other comments on this channel. All of them are either praising teams that beat the Oilers or mocking the team when Johnny makes a video about them.
One of the things I think a lot of NHL fans don't get about Edmonton is that the Oilers are like the ONLY thing we have. Most bigger markets will have an NFL, MLB, NBA team as well as the NHL team, but in Edmonton the NHL is the only show in town. The city literally lives and breathes Edmonton Oilers, you can drive thru the average neighborhood in the city and every other house has the game going in their living rooms, every bar has people watching the game, etc. Everyone knows the Oilers, even people aren't really hockey fans, it's actually kinda ridiculous.
It’s not just Edmonton. I don’t even live there. Hell, I don’t even live in Alberta and never have.
I live in Saskatchewan (although not far from the Alberta border). Oilers fans easily outnumber all other NHL fans in most small towns. The 80s Oilers had a profound effect for many people in Saskatchewan. As we don’t have an NHL team (and most likely never will) the Oilers feel like our local team. Even in southern Saskatchewan, you won’t see much for Flames fans but you’ll see plenty of Oilers fans. Even in eastern Saskatchewan as you get closer to the Manitoba border, there’s still plenty of Oilers fans but also a fair bit of Jets fans. I’m also told the Oilers are very popular in the three territories of Canada.
Everyone talks about “Leafs Nation” but truth be told, the Oilers probably have the biggest geographical spread of fans for any non-Original 6 team.
Hell, go to Calgary (shudder) and it’s more Oilers than Flames fans.
Well, there is the CFL team, which has been absolutely awful lately. The Esks, sorry, the Elks could command massive crowds in the stands when they're playing well and Grey Cup contenders. Glad the Oilers are doing well now. We'd have nothing to cheer for if both pro teams were doing terribly.
As an oilers fan for life and a local to Alberta I’ve always wanted to see this franchise finally succeed after such a hard fight
As a local Manitoban I been a oilers fan since probably 2008 and always had a like in the oilers back when i was probably 3 years old and i started getting in to hockey just after i tryed playing NHL 12 in 2014 started watching and cheering the oilers in 2014-2015 season and I remember back then in middle school alot of people buged me about the oilers suck and said you should cheer on a better team like the jets but I said "NO" LETS GO OILERS! Today im so happy where the oilers are and I hope soon a Stanley Cup will return to Edmonton for the oilers! I'm looking forward for the upcoming seaso! LETS GO OILERS!!!
Edmonton has always had trouble keeping players around. Pocklington essentially torpedoed any chance of the 80's Oilers being Oilers for life. Lowe and Smyth are beloved here because they both came back to finish their careers with Edmonton. But Nuge is the first player who has a legit shot at playing a 15+-year career entirely with Edmonton. If Connor and Leon follow that, that's a very massive win for our franchise.
It's nice to see a different mentality in he City of Champions. They probably enjoy that such has not been the case in Calgary.
I think they know what they have in eachother, the potential of the overall team, and they've seemed to really enjoy and embraced everything about being an Oiler. Even though they're not my main team, I really hope they stay and do so for their full NHL-career/careers. They'll win at least one cup and are going to go down in history as the greatest 1/2-punch ever, along side Gino and Sid.
Aditionally, they seem like great guys. Really hope that they go get a cup in a near future and have at least a couple more when they retire. They make the sport of hockey SOOOOO much more better and enjoyable.
No offense to Gino and Sid but I think Gretzky & Messier and Lemieux & Jagr are ahead of them
If the oilers are able to resign McD and Draistl it saves the franchise from another 10 year disaster.
As an Oilers fan I was sure about Connors commitment.. Drai scares me though and I absolutely love him as a player.. I REALLY hope he signs long term
He won’t go anywhere without Connor! …if he doesn’t resign on the last year of his contract we trade for valuable players!
Drai stays if McDavid stays and vice versa
Plus remember if they trade Nurse, Connor won't stay there.
He said so.
Ask the writers in town....😮
Don’t worry about Leon; he CHOSE to be a PA Raidar he didn’t have to, he’s built different
They are the best show in the league. Just gotta show in the playoffs now.
The #1 pick era was easily my favourite lol drafting 1st so many times and still sucking is almost impossible but they found a way
as a person from Red Deer AB im amazed these dudes pick to stay in alberta compared to new york / LA but as an oilers fan im here for it
McJesus and Dr. Drai seem to be different then other athletes. Not just skill wise
Grew up with Gretz and Messier, survived the decade of darkness and now watching Connor and Leon ❤❤❤
that 90% chance applied to Calgary's players too, and look what happened in one season.
Same with Tavares he said he would stay in NY but see how that worked out 😂
no it didnt, mcdavid and drai were always made of better stuff than johnny and tkachuk. anyone who wasnt a Flames fan could see that there was a very good chance they leave to America due to pressure, which they eventually did.
And Calgary replaced those guys with Hubby, Weager, Kadri not nothing
Great report.
Re: Oilers dominance in the '80s.... let's not forget the dynasty of the NY Islanders from '80 thru '83. Powerful team winning 4 straight Cups.... Oilers won 2 then Habs won then Oilers won 2 more for their 4 cups in the '80s.
Re: McD & Draisaitl......these guys are in their prime and bonefide superstars BUT they are aging and there'll come a time in the next few seasons when their games will start to slip, to slow down, etc......Oilers MUST WIN a couple of Cups NOW to take advantage of those two in their ultimate prime o/w they run the risk of injury, getting old and the window closes.
Look at what Crosby, Malkin, and Letang have done with Pens.....if only it were that easy for all teams....😁
Oh....and one last parting shot AGAINST the mighty Oilers. As a Habs fan I am here to appreciate how good Oilers were in the '80s BUT the late '70s Habs team that won 4 straight Cups was BETTER!!! The '76/77 Habs team that went 60-8-12 IMHO is the greatest team ever...😁....just couldn't resist.
You have to wonder how much of this is Leon and Conner discussing this themselves. Surely they do, and maybe these guys are just so good, they don't have to worry to much about the top brass.
0:13 I hope that sign is still on display! Design, font, materials just SCREAM I love the 80s!
Nope
The sign is still there but not the City Of Champions part.
Winning in Edmonton would be cool, but imagine bringing the cup/winning in your hometown after they haven't won in 56 years. Connor could do it and Edmonton fans shouldn't discount that pull power.
I feel like they'll stay unless something absolutely heartbreaking happens in the next 2 seasons.
They're really at a point where they can't afford to lose (especially if its to either Colorado/Vegas again)
Dallas, LA, and St. Louis can be added to that list too. Oh wait, that’s 1/3 of the conference.
@@timothywright1318 LA has two relatively recent Cups - they're fine. Same with St. Louis - another recent Cup winner.
I don't want to criticize Jawny Hawkey but he's acting like a dumbo. What does he honestly think McD and D are going to say? They're not going to say it's 50/50 while locked in contracts. Only players who have gone rogue trash their current team and last I checked McD and D were upstanding gents. This story is so dumb. In actuality, if anything, the fact that they are only 90% and not 100% seems like the story to me. Why are they not 100%? 19 straight series. Oilers never did it
As an Oiler fan this would be the best case scenario. I hope Frank is correct, but I’ll believe it when I see it!
Yes, better than even winning a cup! They have yet to do it.
As an Oilers fan you could say it's a 99% chance they will sign long term but I'm still worried about that 1% chance.
These 2 are huge to the team but there's also these other teams that will dump their futures to sign these two and win now.
McDavid and Draisatl are the best 1-2 punch in the NHL bar-none. The way these guys play, it would be a awful if these guys didn't bring a cup to Edmonton. No one deserves it more.
I mean, Oilers fans should be stoked that both guys are going to be around for a long time....but the pressure is really going to be ratcheted up now to make it to the SC Finals
Avs did it, this team can too. As much as I really dislike the Oilers, I can't deny that this is a cup contending team. Avs did it with an incredibly average, maybe even below average, goalie and so can the Oilers.

Maybe its just because ive grown up in a Northern Ontario city and am use to the cold. But it surprises me its such an issue for guys. During the season youre mostly going to and from your house and the rink. games practice, work out. youre mostly focused on that and your family. No matter what city it is, all the guys are going to be living in pretty nice neighborhoods. Every city is going to have a couple places you could go for a nice dinner or whatever you'd like. Then when the offseason comes you can go stay in which ever city you'd like. Maybe its just me, but it would not matter what city i lived in. I would be too focused on the game and my training to care about whats outside my house and the rink.
But your family wouldn't .
@@laughingbeast4481 Not entirely sure i know what you mean?
The Oilers Owner is playing chess while every other Canadian owner is playing checkers.
It's a good point that star players duck out of major market Canadian teams at the first chance...except EDM. Do the fans/city treat the players better? Are they staying because Connor and Drai are there and that immediately puts you in contention (and looks good on your stat sheet)? Both?
I would say both. Every city has its jerks so there are for sure some in Edmonton too, but in general players are treated like rockstars by the fans. The Edmonton media on the other hand sucks and I don't get why they don't kick some of these trouble makers out of the arena. The players hate them and the fans hate them, so why are they there. They are not as bad as Toronto's media but they still add unnecessary pressure that makes players pissy. I think the appeal to the players is they see that the fans want the cup as bad as they do and things will go nuts if they win.
Draisaitl is worth $15M and would help bring a Cup to NY or LA.
That Nail Yakapov hype was 🔥 he was the next Ovi I was certain of it...
Edmonton is actually a pretty nice city. Yes, the winters can be brutal, not like in tropical climates like Buffalo or Detroit. Taxes are higher in Canada, except for Alberta. I’m sure they get bothered by fans, but I bet they’re also aware they pay the bills and that it’s a trade off. Gretzky made A LOT of money after he left Edmonton, but he also became a merc that never won again.
I get McDavid. Seems pretty normal for Canadians to be content in a small, cold market for their career. See Crosby. But I would have guessed Leon would want the hell out of Edmonton for someplace glamorous. Good for Edmonton if he sticks around.
I keep saying this with limited traction amongst my personal circle. But there exists another dimension. In this dimension, the Oilers never drafted Draisaitl. Connor McDavid thus doesn't get his best friend (even outside of hockey) and the one guy on the team that not only matches his passion level but backs it up with talent that is only a baby step behind McDavid himself. There is another dimension where Connor asked for a trade or refused to sign long term. It was Draisaitl that gave him hope, an anchor in the darkness, a guy and friend that "gets it".
Then there’s the dimension where the Oilers listened to dopes like me and took Eichel instead of McDavid.
@@billcook4768 Up until two years ago I always thought Eichel was the better choice. I'm still very, very pro Eichel...BUT, McDavid has done so much in the past few playoffs that nothing more could reasonably be asked of him and he did outperform Eichel, even on a slightly worse team.
@@billcook4768 I don't like McDavid's personality: introverted, sullen, depressive. He doesn't seem to be having fun, ever, despite his excellent consistency and phenomenal skills. For better or worse, a personality such as Matthew Tkachuk's smiling, extroverted, warm nature is a HUGE plus in my column.
They are loved here in Edmonton… I hope that Connor and Leon BOTH retire here.. they are the best in the NHL, losing them is BAD BUSINESS
Look everyone says oh they have so much pressure in a high Canadian market or in the states. But for some reason only a select people can play for NY (rangers) actually aren’t disappointing. I’m not dissing the other markets. But nothing compares to the pressure they have in NY
If you are a hockey player who loves the sport you're playing Edmonton would be a great place. It's unfortunate that some idiots would heckle Connor and his family in a McDonald's but we can't keep all the losers out. Toronto fans, and I live there and support the team to an extent, should be so lucky.
Johnny. As confirmed by your graphic, it was 10 consecutive seasons out of the playoffs not 11. 0:22 That's why it was called the "decade" of darkness.
Anytime anyone said to me they going to leave I'd laugh and say "you don't know them, like I know them". They hate every other NHL team.
I mean ya they may stay oilers for life, but at some point their combined cap hits will be close to 30m. And thats a hell of a lot for just two players. Essentially means two forwards are taking exactly half of the cap allocated for the entire forward group. Draisatl’s contract extension will be interesting as I believe he is absolutely a 12 million a year player.
He’s a $15M a year player with the cap going up and being a UFA

@@siimtokke3461 it hasnt been "debunked". just because you could find a few outliers doesnt mean that there arent a large number of players who refuse to play in canada. look the majority of teams on the no trade lists of players, they almost always have over half of canadas teams on them, trade demands almost always are coming from players in big canadian markets. even if you listen to certain podcasts that many players go on, the common problem with canada is the weather, the taxes, and the pressure and media that comes with playing in a canadian market.

i want Leon and Conor to stay together. i’m a devs fan but these guys are like shaq & kobe. I want them to succeed
Now Austin Matthews on the other hand, yea - he's going to test the market for sure. Look, I just cant see him re-signing with the Leafs, I mean he's in the same position John Tavares was in when the Leafs signed him - and ironically one could argue the cap space he ate is the reason for the Leafs lack of success, hence why Matthews never hoisted the Cup or even had a deep run... I only bring up Matthews because he IS a guy arguably on that "generational" level - and he WILL BE a UFA...
Hate to be negative Nelly but we thought Gretzky would be and oiler for a lot longer too.
Honestly I don’t give a shit what they say beforehand, if Mcdavid doesn’t make a cup final before his contract is up I have a really hard time he’s going to stay with a team that has the exact same problems every single year.

They just need to do a Kane/Toewes where their next signings are package deals
The Kane / Toews signings were a disaster, though. Since they signed their greedy contracts they never won a playoff series.
What's my point? Salaries have to be reasonable if they want to win.

well yeah, didnt they hire mcdavids agent buddy as some kind of front office position
He literally said in the video that he was hired as C.E.O of hockey operations.
Hopefully they realize that they don’t need to make 12m a year%… if they REALLY care about winning a cup, it will show on their next contracts.
Wasnt seravalli invloved in a controversy about making up a story? So i wouldnt put all my eggs in that basket…plus every athlete says i wanna stay and this a great place to play…reality is unless they put their signature on that line you never know what will happen…remember JT, tkachuk, gaudreau and a bunch of the players have said this and while they meant it at the time their minds can change throughout the year and yeah edmonton might be a nice place to play in but its still edmonton…
As funny as it is a Canadian team being a contender for 8-10 years is Toronto right now, they just don’t ever do anything
That demon was slayed this year, Toronto just started being one now that they got out of the first round. Didn’t expect a cup to come to them the same season they overcame that hill. They have to build on that this year for people to take them more seriously
This was the thought around Tkachuk and Gaudreau and we all saw what happened with that. Dont believe it untol the ink is dry.

How dare you show Smytty in the montage of "guys looking elsewhere" part. Smytty never wanted to leave :(
Here is the thing.. You can't split those two players. And what other team in the league can afford both of them? They are both going to get huge raises come the end of their contracts, but Edmonton is already paying them 18 or so million combined each year. What's the big deal if that number goes up to 22 or 24 million? That is a price I'd be willing to live with to keep arguably the two best players in the league in Edmonton for a few more years.

The Leafs have been and always will be the biggest laughing stock of any league. Even when they consistently make the playoffs, no matter what they do, they could win the cup 10 yrs in a row and would still be considered a joke of a franchise. The hate is too strong.
So, if McDavid & Draisaitl sign megabucks contracts with the Oilers, will the team ever have the depth of talent spread across four lines required to win the Stanley cup?
Don't think the Oilers will win the Stanley Cup with them or not definitely will not be in my lifetime but if I was them I would have left in my second or third year honestly my advice to the two of them is to leave the Edmonton Oilers together to a new team honestly that would set the Oilers up to set them pretty good for a Stanley Cup because we're not just one but two they can get the whole team if they wanted that's how valuable they are and honestly Matthews would be a lot better on the team with or without them and he's probably got the best shot right now in the game
Be quiet clown.
