Elite center. You cannot rack that many points without being great. He just makes things happen in the offensive zone. If he touches the puck near the opponents net, a goal is coming for the Oilers. But as long as he is playing in the shadow of the best player in the world, we will never know for sure just HOW GOOD he really is.

In my honest opinion, Leon Draisaitl is an ELITE center in this league. On any other team, he is their #1 center and the face of the franchise. When Connor McDavid went down with the knee injury in the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season, he went beast mode to keep the Oilers a top team in the West. That stretch of incredible play was why he won the Art Ross, Hart, and Lindsay trophies that season.

Draisaitl was heavily weighed down by Yamamoto when they were linemates. Drai would set him up multiple times a game and Yamo would almost always miss the net or mess up the play. If he would have had a better linemate he would have done better 5on5.

    • @Marixa1979
      @Marixa1979 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

That's 100% something most people overlook when they talk about his 5v5 production, they're comparing him with second line wingers comparing to other elite centers like Mack and Matthews who are playing with the top wingers. If you gave Drai Kane and Hymen 82 games, he'd have better 5 on 5 production as well. I really hope Brown in for Yamo really solidifies the top 2 lines.

The fact this is discussed is absolutely ridiculous. Draisaitl scores tons 5on5 and helps his linemates too, same with Mcdavid the argument of well he scores bunch on powerplay is so confusing because Oilers have lethal powerplay, so what is the expectation not to have a lethal powerplay just to score more 5on5 its so bizarre.

What people don't realize is that top players across the board don't actually score that much 5on5 points and something like 50 points without power play already puts you into the absolute top echelon of players. Which I’d also argue is the reason he’s gotten as good as he has, his drive to be as good or better than McDavid is there. Interesting thoughts. I must admit I make some of the same complaints about John Tavares who last year had 39 of 80 points on the power play and 18 of 36 goals there. He is a relatively slow skater and seems to do better with set pieces. still has a great shot. That is not Draisaitl. He's fast, he's a play driver. Great shot and great passer.
Draisaitl I've watched through a couple of playoffs where he has been dominant 5 on 5. Certainly this year it was Evan Bouchard and McDavid who feasted in the playoffs with the extra man. He had that big playoff run as a 21 year old and the year before last and on all those occasions he was a dominant five on five player.
Last year the Oilers had the best offense in the league (3.96 gpg) and an almost historically successful powerplay. 32.4%
Draisaitl and McDavid feasted on the power play . McDavid had 71 power play points.
He is not just a power play guy. He's a great NHL player.
Draisaitl would be a first line center just about anywhere else in the NHL. Maybe not Colorado. Maybe.

In his career 36% of his goals are PPG... so almost 64% are 5v5. So not even close to half of his goals are PPG.

Something that's overlooked by alot is that Mcdavid and Draisaitl dominant 5on5 early on. They had to though as their pp wasn't that effective. Now that it is they can play a more passive 5on5 game and wait for the pp to take more risk. They also play with the lead more now. So basically 5on5 they are being asked to take less risks which lowers 5on5 scoring. If the pp wasnt killing it they'd be putting up much higher 5on5 numbers.

Draisaitl had 64 point 5v5 last season. That puts him at 13th for skaters but ahead of other elite players like Kucherov, Matthews, Kopitar, Bergeron. Draisaitl's stats, when compared with other elite players, are all the proof needed - he's a top centre.
On a tangent, MacKinnon had 77 5v5 points in 71 games which put him first. It's insane he could do that while playing less games than the next 40 players on that list. If he gets a full season with Rantanen and Makar, I predict he will get 150 points.

    - elite passer
    - has an elite one-timer
    - elite wristshot
    - >50% on the faceoff
    - good zone entries and protects the puck well despite not being a speed freak who can regularly deke out 3 guys like McDavid (not that he can't deke guys out sometimes, but also often uses his body to protect the puck while just muscling his way in)
    - 3-time 50 goal scorer
    - 4-time 100 pt scorer
    - 18.1 career shot %
    - 10 short-handed goals
    - off the powerplay he has 181 regular season goals and 306 assists (and those points alone would put him in the top 250 forwards all-time in points-per-game)
    - he elevates in the playoffs
I'd say he's an elite center.

Well first of all, he was 13th in EVP, yes, but at the same time, he was 4 behind #6. So that's pretty misleading. Second of all, Draisaitl is 2nd in the entire NHL in EVP, if you look at stats since 2016, rather than just last year. #6 is you combine the stats from last year and this year, and #3 if you combine last three years. So the entire argument is based on nothing but last year. And making arguments based on one year is stupid and misleading. Would you look at the 2005-2006 season in a vacuum and make the argument that Cheechoo is one of the best goal scorers of all time? Of course not, so why look at one season of Draisaitl's play and make the argument that he's a powerplay merchant?
Third, and most importantly: powerplay goals count for just as many on the board as 5on5 goals do. People have been making the same stupid argument with Ovechkin throughout his career, that powerplay goals are somehow worth less or easier to come by. If they're so easy to get, then why isn't anyone else getting them? You think if Crosby could score 32 powerplay goals in a season, he would just choose not to do it? Why? To be a good sport and give everyone else a chance?

    • @TheHockeyGuy

Draisatl is 19th in pts in 5vs5, 53rd in goal, but 8th in assists.
Add that to the center stats THG mentionned, looks like we got a center guilty of playing like a center when not on powerplay, how dare he be top10 in assists in 5vs5.
Clearly the best goal scorer in powerplay in the league, while still being top10 in assists (in powerplay) is crazy.
