      too human is a fun one. honestly i think his overall summary is pretty good, if you like the japanese style storytelling (abstract and absurd in the sense of 'wow this is way different from something that would happen in america') with a focus on story, it has an interesting aesthetic, unique, if slightly awkward on occation combat style and i personally found it quite interesting.
      better summary: it's an original concept that is far from a masterpiece, but if you can get a handle on the combat it is at least worth playing

    I have the distinct feeling Yahtzee isn't familiar with the Shin Megami Tensei series. Granted, a few of the games in that series also have the same problems he has with JRPGs (Devil Summoner sub series), but most have interesting stories and make sure the main character doesn't feel like a complete idiot.

    • @justincanu9153
      @justincanu9153 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's still the exact same issue he has with JRPG's in general the narrative has little to nothing to do with the actual gameplay and is simply a means to the end.
      Not to mention that the only tensei game so far that hasn't been a ridiculous slog through grind town or at least making it a semi enjoyable one was persona 4, I still love the series but a good story does not a good game make.

    regarding the 104 building thing- (hit more for spoilers)
    at that time, neku was partnerless and incapable of fighting any enemies. He knew many players gathered by the statue of the dog (whatever its name is), and went there to find one. if the player had that option, he would probably go to 104, get ambushed by reapers, and killed, as joshua would not be there.

    • @octorokpie
      @octorokpie 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      And that's a mistake a game shouldn't be afraid to let you make. There's no harm in allowing your player to do something stupid at their own free will. Especially if the only consequence is death followed by respawn.

    • @RhoneM
      @RhoneM 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** And then Yahtzee would have complained about the game being ambiguous about what the hell it was doing letting him run around committing suicide by accident more often than a WoW player forgetting to eat real food instead of raiding like a nazi in a george lucas film.

    • @phunwizard
      @phunwizard 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Pretty much. Yahtzee, while he is entertaining to watch bash unobjectionably bad games/ the ones I subjectively dislike, is annoying in that he is pretty much forced to find faults in decent games. but yeah, opinions

    • @octorokpie
      @octorokpie 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Random Default I'm not really concerned with Yahtzee bashing it. That's why I watch, whether I like the game or not.
      From a purely game design perspective, I imagine having enemies the player can't defeat without the partner is better than having an arbitrary barrier they can't get past without the partner. Both serve essentially the same purpose, but the first lets the player learn for themselves. Given, death is bound to happen with that, but death is par for the course in video games. Then again, I'm not a game designer. I also might have a different opinion if I'd played the game before, I suppose.
      By the way, I like your analogy.

    • @RhoneM
      @RhoneM 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** death is to be expected in video games, but that is by enemies you can actually defeat or when it is story driven. When you use death as a barrier to point you in another direction it becomes pointless. I would rather have the invisible wall to rage against than die arbitrarily just because I felt like exploring i.e S.T.A.L.K.E.R and the near invisible radiation pockets filled with death, disease and Miley Cyrus. And thanks on the analogy, been channeling my inner Yahtzee the last couple of days and find it cathartic lol

      The fun part is that this review made me interested in the game and that 70 + 34 is the only time that something like this happens except when they nudge you in the general direction when they need to explain a new mechanic and the cutscene had the purpose to indroduce your new partner. The protagonist didn't figure it out because he was busy finding him to avoid death! And the game wants you to hate your new partner as much as the protagonist does so he starts by solving the easiest riddle ever and giving you the answer like he thinks he's a genius. And his power is basically math so he had to do one useful thing. The story isn't that bad if you ignore the protagonists looking like the usual teenage band. And I feel like the target audience ARE teenagers anyway. If you don't like it it's fine I was just wondering why no one explained that 104 part since it's basically the only bad thing he said about the story when it was actually one of the points that worked better with getting the right reaction.

  • @doorprince3760
    @doorprince3760 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Obligatory "This game is awesome fuck you"
    Anyway some actual counterpoints:
    The 104 clue was SUPPOSED to make you hate Joshua. Judging by the picture at 1:50, the game nailed it. Also, about not being able to go straight there? Every single mission has been structured as 1. Figure out destination 2. Find out there's a wall in the way 3. Clear wall 4. Repeat as necessary. That's exactly what happened here, so I'm not sure why this one in particular pissed you off. Oh wait, because Joshua is an ass. Mystery solved.
    Ok, so, about interactive storytelling as a concept:
    Video games being interactive doesn't preclude them from telling stories that aren't interactive. A lot of books could have easily been a movie instead, and a lot of books did become movies. It's the same idea; it could work in any medium, but they chose to make it a video game because why not. They never intended for you to BE Neku. You're just along for the ride, like a movie.
    TWEWY actually makes good use of it's game-iness. Yeah, trends didn't change much in practice, but it helped drive home the point that it's not good to ignore society. You could either ditch your individuality and become what the people like, or you could stand your ground and make the people like who you already are (the game implies this one is what you're "supposed" to do; it doesn't WANT you to be a fashion victim). Either way, it's good to be accepted by others. The gameplay and story have a connection, it's just not in your face about it.
    ...wait a sec, VNs love meaningful dialogue choices, ie interactive storytelling. Why do you hate VNs?
    The controls are a little weird to get used to, I'll give you that. Once you figure out how the game reads inputs, then it's pretty easy to draw circles consistently.
    The dual screen combat? You're supposed to focus on the puck. That's it. That's the trick. And the CPU is terrible at getting fusion stars.
    You just didn't understand the brand system. Clothes and pins change the trends, but the only things affected by trends are offensive pins. No strategy guide needed.
    The characters are pretty darn original, except for Neku, who gets WAY better development than most emo JRPG protags.
    The dialogue is really well written, and aged surprisingly well considering it was supposed to be modern 10 whole years ago. Another Day is the epitome of humor.
    TWEWY is literally the best game I've ever played, and my favorite genre is JRPGs. You can hate JRPGs, but don't you dare say that they're objectively bad. Not that you actually did, but you presented your thoughts on JRPGs as fact rather than opinion. Yes, I'm aware that there's pretty much zero chance that he'll actually read this.
    Spreadsheets ARE awesome.

      Ok, by looking at your comment, I have noticed three problems with it. One, considering yahtzee never even once mentioned Joshua during his 104 tangent, then I would say the game failed at making him hate joshua. Two, games, movies, and books, are not interchangeable. If characters in a movie talk like they would in a book, then some people are going to find that to be unnatural and forced; similarly, if a game ( a medium that was originally intended for people to be the main character)acts more like a movie, then some people are going to be annoyed since they didn't want a movie, they wanted a video game. Third, the point of these videos is to present his opion as fact for comedic effect, So pointed that out is like saying water is wet.

    • @doorprince3760
      @doorprince3760 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kye Dysarthria 1. He never mentioned anything about the plot after the synopsis, so who knows? I’m gonna reiterate that the path to 104 was blocked in-universe and needing to take another path to meet Joshua opened the path for the characters instead of just being arbitrary “you gotta do things in the right order to progress”. It was also one of the more confusing/complicated moments in the story, since you were *supposed* to have just won the Reapers’ Game, but are starting over for some reason. I donno, the 104 scene was just a really weird bit to pick to complain about when the hint was more of a way to lead the player to other plot stuff as opposed to being important in and of itself.
      2. I’ll never understand why people like blank-slate self-insert type protagonists over actual developed characters. I’m gonna use Persona 4 as my first example, because I *hated* playing as that game’s protag. He got barely any characterization, but everything he did get was so unlike me that it made it impossible for me to relate to him or imprint myself onto him, and I also couldn’t understand him well enough to act like I was him. Cue the anime adaptation, which gave him a fully fleshed-out personality and character arc, and made him one of my favorite characters in the series. (He keeps his personality and status as a fav in the spinoffs, so this isn’t about anime vs game, this is about blank-slate vs development)
      Tales of the Abyss also had a hateable protag, but that was on purpose, and design went into making sure the player was pissed off that *this idiot douchebag* was the character they had to control. It made for amazing character development.
      Neku’s antisocial and kind of a prick at the start of TWEWY, but he’s smart and snarky enough to ironically be pretty charismatic when he’s a character instead of a person, and the snarkiness that makes him likeable from the outside never goes away, even after his character development.
      My dad played through the Uncharted series a while back, and they were basically playable movies. By the end of the series, he’d gotten decent at them and thought it was really cool that he got to “participate” in the story, but at the beginning, he was constantly fighting the controls and would’ve had a much better experience just watching a playthrough. The gameplay was an *addition* to the experience, not a vital part of it, and if the gameplay is unenjoyable enough, it could’ve been scrapped *to the benefit of the experience*. Uncharted didn’t do any fancy video game stuff, it just happened to be a video game.
      So I guess what I’m saying is: Yes, it matters what type of media you make your story, but things can (usually) be adjusted to make it work in other mediums. (The “usually” is in regards to shit like undertale that have such absurd use of gameplay-story-integration that any adaptation that loses that stuff is going to be inferior). You don’t go into a movie theater expecting it to tell a story that can only be told in movie form.
      3. I haven’t seen any of his other videos, I don’t even usually watch reviews. I just saw that it was TWEWY and only 4 minutes long. Still thought it was worth pointing out.

    The trick with the dual screen combat in this game is to follow the green energy puck back and forth to keep building up your power. If the puck is on the top screen, focus up there for a moment, and vice versa. It's actually pretty cool.
    I loved this game so much I spent dozens of extra hours grinding and levelling up and trying to find all of the pins.

      I think he got through to Week 2, so not far enough to get to the "Taboo" Noise that will stick a rusty spark in your eye sockets if you haven't learned effective "puck-passing" by that point. Personally, I enjoyed the characters and story, with the combat becoming rather fun after getting the hang of it and learning the combos I liked. Most of the pins took some getting used to, and the allies all had a good amount of differences that kept you on your toes.
      I will say that the most broken pin combination was "Me Time is Free Time" and any Massive Hit pin. Not to mention the Wolf pin, which pretty much weaponized your dodge move. Overall, I really liked the game, but Yahtzee's gripes are legitimate ones and I can understand why they got him aggravated.

    Yahtzee, I honestly don't get you sometimes. you say you hate the modern war shooters because there is often no real story, no characters get development, and each character is essentially a copy paste of each other, but when it comes to JRPGs, you hate them for the opposite reason, the story is complex, characters change, and sometimes you get a critical choice that inflicts the story.
    look, I get the final fantasy 13 trilogy was complete and utter bullshit, I won't argue on its behalf. but you can't just wipe off an entire genre.
    look how bout you review a game down by Atlus, whether it be a Shin Megami Tensei game or Persona (thought I think you would enjoy and SMT game more) those guys are the true masters of JRPGs

      odinofanime I don't think Yahtzee hates JRPGs for the exact opposite reason that he hates modern war shooters. In fact, he does mention in the video that he hates JRPGS because the characters are too similar(at least in the JRPGs he has played) and he has to do too much reading.

    • @odinofanime
      @odinofanime 9 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      theyoutubecommentepidemic well, that doesn't really make sense to me. in a games he loves (Darksouls and Bloodborn) the only way to get the story is by checking out item descriptions, which means a shit ton of reading. plus the characters in TWEWY are all different, each one has distinct personality and look about them. also, and this is the final thing, he constantly keeps giving Modern War Shooters a chance, just because of Spec Ops the Line, but he rarely ever does JRPGs, just because of the annoying and stupidity that is modern Square Enix. I find that bad, that he won't do reviews of any other JRPGs from any other companies.

      odinofanime On a personal level, I hate JRPGs for turn-based combat (I'd rather base my fighting results on how knowledgeable I am about the process, how well I can aim and land attacks, etc. Not about how large certain numbers are) and because stuff like grinding is completely par-for-the-course and acceptable.
      Now, if a JRPG didn't have those, it just wouldn't be a JRPG anymore.

    • @odinofanime
      @odinofanime 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Zapsie Grinding is a bitch, I will agree with you. but for JRPGs, strategy is needed. games like Etrian Odyssey, Devil Survivor, and Conception (though Conception is more of a joke honestly) you won't live if you don't strategist. shooters, riddle them with enough bullets, headshots kill, action/adventure, mash the buttons until they are dead, platformers, jump here, then there, fighting games there can be very complex strategies in these games, I know that, but most of the time it just boils down to button mashing.

    JRPG is a dead genre anyway, the only ones that come out anymore are either over the top anime (coming from an otaku..), to creative or archaic for there own good or visual novels with light gameplay.
    Western-made Japanese style RPGs are quite fun though, as they know what made JRPGs so much fun in the 90s-early 2000s (just a story with a fairly complex battle system). This sucks for me cause I can not stand how western RPGs handle, the stat system in them always makes me annoyed that i'm building my character right, and ruins feeling of role-playing cause I feel I have to optimize everything >.>.
    Another issue i've had with JRPGs as of late, is they always drag in the middle areas, I only seem to enjoy myself towards the end of them.

      A j-rpg fan wants to be immersed in a carefully crafted world, characters, and history, which isnt really easy or even posible with "choices" just to cater that kind of guy. He is right to say that we just want a beautiful novel mixed with videogames.
      A w-rpg fan (or just one that hates J-rpg), doesnt want a history presented to him, and can even accept shallow and empty characters for the sake of his freedom. They want a playground to become and do whatever they want.
      Basically to diferent mindsets. One wants to enjoy what the creator made for him. The other claims the creator to make him a setup to "create" in it

    • @tumamaencosplay
      @tumamaencosplay 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Then we certainly haven't been playing the same games.
      J-RPG tend to be lienar and fake freedom because they try to focus on the story and ALL that fantasy stuff that makes it look cool
      W-RPG focus more on what you can DO in them, rather than what you expectate.
      Thing is, the more real option you give,the less time you can spend on character development and little details of the world, becuase they have to PRODUCE lots of gameplay interactions and thats not cheap at all.
      Take it like this, you make a game where X companion can be killed definetely at any time given, this means you cant make this character a neuralgic part of the plot for the sake of "freedom". If this applies to every char, you get left with little thing to do with your characters on a large scale.
      At best, a J-rpg like that can do is go the Fire emblem way, anyone can die but at least if you keep them alive you can get to make them have "non-important" chats between each other and get char dev.
      Meanwhile W-RPG jsut tend to say "fuck important companions, you GO SOLO" and the only companions you get are either generic mercenaries, over powered to make them inmortal because plot, or just simply appear briefly from time to time, in order to "plot shield" without destoying the ilussion of choice..

      bad example, many visual novels are made infinitely better by being in the video game genre, by virtue of having multiple choices, like telltale games' games, or rpgs. a good example would be 999 or better yet its sequel virtues last reward, which uses branching storylines as a basic plot element(parralel worldds0 and does it infinitely better than bioshock infinite(pun not intended). Its not a coincidence that the two I mentioned are often heralded as the pest stories of their respective years of release, or even in general. Text based exposition coupled with the addition of music as an atmosphere tuner and most importantly, player interactivity truly makes for a one in a lifetime experience

      Lazar Mladenoski I can listen to music while reading a book, too. Multiple path ways, yes something that REAL video games can easily do and are even better because you as the player actually take part in the choices you made instead of just watching them play out. If you're going to go through the trouble of making a digital game and have a crew of people work on it, make an actual fucking game, otherwise don't waste your time and effort and just make a comic book instead. It's the same thing with motion comics, why would I want to spend 20 or 30 dollars just to watch Rorschach's arm slightly move. Okay if they're really old like Snatcher or on an handheld system, fine that's excusable but what I can't fucking stand is when they decided to put these things on PC when PC is capable of so much more

      gotta agree with Charles here, i see more people like you jumping the 'hate to be popular in the comments' bandwagon than i see of people actually taking this 'review' all that negatively.
      .
      Also doesnt help that in most these conversations i've seen more people instantly jumping to the 'you must be a weaboo if you dont agree with my negative remarks' which basically makes comments like yours hilariously hypocritical.

      +Begg Baws To be fair, I'm not terribly fond of visual novels, because I feel like they cheapen the experience of actually interacting with people. But I do like anime because a.) I like the art style, and b.) even if a lot of characters are similar in temperament, mangakas can still manage to tell good stories with them. To me, reading the majority of anime is a lot like eating junk food. TWEWY is not in that category, mostly because it appeals to my weirdass sensibilities, is challenging, has a cool and really fun battle system,, and a pretty good story, even if the main character is mostly 'Generic Angsty Stereotype A'. I also thought this video was funny, however, because I like Yahtzee's videos. So. Yeah. I don't think the anime community as a whole is creepy and cringey. I'm willing to admit some of it is, but this isn't.

      +Begg Baws wow, haven't had such a good chuckle from a youtube comment in a long time. you're not the most open-minded of individuals, are you? I won't go much into anime here as this is a video about games, the only thing I am going to say is that there is some fucked up anime and manga out there and I'm fully aware of that, but I don't watch/read that shit as I'm not in it for that but for the unique ways an animated movie/series can portray things real-life movies/series simply can't without spending insane amounts of money, which makes for more diversity in story telling.
      about anime games and JRPGs: I absolutely agree that visual novels are weird, but then again I don't really consider them games but rather a mixture of comics, audiobooks and interactive story telling. when it comes to actual JRPGs such as "the world ends with you" it really depends on the game itself. Like, if a game has only mediocre gameplay but a captivating story, an example would be chrono trigger, it might entertain me just as much as a game with stellar gameplay but a lacking, by the numbers story, my example here being pokemon. Hence, the pinacle of JRPGs for me personally are the dragon quest series, the kingdom hearts series (minus CoM) and the dark souls series as those games manage to have both gameplay and story at an incredibly high standard. And if you look into these games (except maybe pokemon as its literally about enslaving animals) you'll see that none of them contain any of these typical cringey anime tropes. Okay, dragon quest VIII has 1-2 suggestive attacks with a female character, but that character isn't designed to look like a minor.

    Yahtzee: “I like when story and gameplay work together and go hand and hand.”
    Also Yahtzee: “I didn’t like the part of combat that is obviously symbolic of how the main character struggles to work with others”
    I love you Yahtzee but some of these older reviews are a bit silly.

    This is quite possibly one of the most ignorant takes on this game I have ever seen. I realize this was made years ago and this will likely never be read, however it pained me to listen to this review.
    It seems as though you have the wrong perspective on this game and genre as a whole. I understand that JRPG's aren't for everyone, and that the gameplay loop can be frustrating or confusing to many. However, it seems as though you only read through half of the dialpgue the game presented, I'm not sure as to whether or not it's simply due to wanting to play the game rather than read cutscenes, however you did parce enough to get a bare minimum of where your general direction is to be.
    For example the beginning of part 2 of the game, spoilers by the way, but while Neku does get the clue for the Game Master of what the day's objective is, the previous week hammered into his skull just how much having and trusting a partner is vital to his survival. And right after getting the daily clue he concludes that he should go to the Hachiko statue where he met Shiki to find a partner.
    That's where the second partner comes in and the game makes you absolutely despise him, he talks down to Neku as well as forcing him to be his partner with no consent. The game wants you to hate this dpuchebag and be extremely suspicious of him and his actions moving forward. However you chalked this up to simply "the game is patronizing me and forcing me to sit through boring cutscenes" instead of attempting to interact with the game in the slightest, to see eye to eye with it for one moment.
    The entire game is centered around it's own story devices and themes, having two playable characters with completely different play styles on two different screens is incredibly tough. It's supposed to be. The game is about an introverted douchebag rehabilitating himself and trying to give other people a shot, and so making it tough to balance the two characters who can't see eachother and need to trust that they're doing their work plays into this.
    All in all, this video gets quite a lot of information, basic information about the game, characters, even story incorrect. I'm not sure if this is intentional or not, as I have only seen you Dragon Quest 11 video previously and found it to be just as offensive in terms of getting information wrong. I'm all well and fine for a more negative take on one of my favorite games, however I do want there to be accurate information and thought into what the game is attempting. But oh well, my rant is over.

    Exactly what are the properties of wallpaper paste? We in America have painted our houses since the '70's, so wallpaper paste isn't something that you find a lot, yet I've heard a lot of people from countries that have the English flag on their flag talk about it.
