I'm going to be honest, the anime so far feels more like "here is some stuff that looks cool and interesting with bits of plot, now go play the actual game"
It's not an bad anime but it's not really great either
    It's just about ok

Funny you put it that way, since it's the same reason I would never recommend the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon anime specials.

I also didn't like how when Neku tried to kill Shiki that they took the parts where Shiki was always looking at her phone and that he listened to the reapers because he thought that was when she was communicating with them. And it just made the reason that Neku listened even worse than it already was.

Makes sense(I was about to put up my anime glasses and make a full out essay but didn’t since I noticed it was long) since some things wouldn’t make sense to people who never knew about the game or never even played it.

Except for the fact that it doesn’t cover a new day so anime only people will be confused. While they might recap it in neo because not everybody has played final remix it’s still a issue.

@@moon8983 play the game and not the anime. The game is a better representation of the story. You can play it on mobile for 15$ or switch for 60$. Either way the anime isnt a great way to recap on the story. (Thats literally what this video is about.)

    Side note
The fact that in the anime Beat and Rhyme just STAND THERE not lifting a finger to snap Neku out of it or even attempting to attack the reapers or hell, even SAVE SHIKI in general just...made the scene more painful to watch.
And I played through this game a DOZEN times over on the DS and all the best scenes are fresh in my head!
    Anime is still decent though...Just....decent.

It is a SIN that they didn’t utterly FILL the anime with the classic tracks. If there’s anything that aids Twewy to be my favorite game, it’s the vibe the soundtrack oozes. The anime is decent, but it feels a bit more empty without hearing awesome tracks like Long Dream or Hybrid during fight scenes.

There was literally no reason for them not to have him hold on to the pins for a split second as he uses the psychs. Like... it wouldn't have changed anything besides being a nod to the fans. Another nod to the fans that would have literally taken only a few seconds and just been a great personality beat for Neku: having him try to angrily delete the mission mail at first. It was a good way of setting Neku up for the beginning of a very, _very_ bad day, and even beyond reinforcing his misanthropic monologue, it would have shown how he acts and how he can be angry and lash out, not just sulk in a corner and get lost in his own head.
My personal biggest disappointment with the early episodes was with how Neku reacted to learning how to use the skull pins to scan. Specifically, in the anime, he said something to the effect of "nice, now I don't have to go through the trouble of interacting with people and can just know what they're *really* thinking." This is... a totally different character! In the games, it was never that Neku hated the people around him because he thought they were inauthentic, or that social interaction was too difficult or too much of a pain. He literally _did not care_ what other people thought, even if he could pluck it right out of their heads. Just like that, you've turned someone who was legitimately misanthropic into someone who's just fed up with people and interaction and society in general.

The thing that bugs me about removing Neku's agency in trying to kill Shiki is that the moment intentionally parallels a moment at the end of the game that is made to illustrate his character growth. SPOILERS ahead, but:
Neku tries to kill Shiki, someone who has only ever been genuinely trying to help him, on the word of a complete stranger he has no reason to trust and should be getting a million red flags from. At the end of the game, Neku is asked to kill another one of his partners - Joshua - who at this point Neku has no reason NOT to. To his knowledge Joshua is going to destroy the city. Joshua lied to him and gaslit him through the entirety of week 2. Joshua LITERALLY MURDERED HIM and turned his whole life upside down purely to use him as a pawn in a game he was playing. Neku has zero reason to trust Josh... and yet he does anyway.
He tries to murder Shiki despite having blatant reasons to trust her...
...but he chooses to spare Joshua despite knowing hes broken his trust.
When you remove Neku's agency in the first scene, the second scene loses that mirrored significance.

My favorite fails of the anime so far are these two things. The first is when Shiki declares how much Neku has changed when in the context of the Anime he really hasn’t changed at all since they start him around where he was starting week 2 anyways. My other favorite moment is at the beginning of week 2 when Neku declares that all of the players need to trust their partners as he jumps out to fight the noise completely ignoring Joshua. This anime is such a mess that doesn’t understand the source material so it doesn’t know what it wants to be.

The iOS and Switch versions actually had new content in each respective release, and twewy crossed over with kingdom hearts in dream drop distance. The IP was gone, but certainly not forgotten. The switch version went as far as adding a new week, and even a tease for a sequel after the credits lol. So if you paid close enough attention, the future seemed bright.

i was wanting so badly to mark out over this anime, and it’s not terrible, but... having experienced the original ds game and even the ios version, it really did miss out on many of the major points of twewy as a whole 😔 i appreciated the little details they couldn’t tackle in the games like how beat actually appealed to becoming a reaper or the further extrapolation of shiki and eri’s friendship... but i watched the season faithfully and as it progressed i was holding on to hope that the anime would pull something major that would be essential to entering neo:twewy, and... that wasn’t the case. i still appreciate that they gave us an anime, but you’re right, it didn’t turn out to be the anime i could share with my friends.

Thank you for the video! i do agree 100%, the anime is disappointing, i wanted to recommend it to everyone who didn't play the game to experience its awesomeness but unfortunately that can't happen:/
i would love to see your opinion on the other episodes:) i know you said they were okay, but still, i don't think you like them that much;) and i'm glad to see your realistic opinion because it seems like everybody else is loving the anime... the episode i was least disappointed with was the second one, but all the others, i'm just getting more and more disappointed, it's frustrating and sad:/
and i'm most disappointed with Joshua, he isn't the Joshua i know and love... he says he doesn't like running, then runs voluntarily ten minutes later, he apparently likes graffiti even though he didn't in the game, but most importantly, he's telling Neku way too much information, and is more creepy, and less of a jerk, while in the game he was more of a jerk, and less creepy ^^'
sorry for ranting, but i'm glad to see someone with a similar opinion, i agree with all the points you made!^^ and i really hope you'll make a video on other episodes too:) Take care and hopefully next episodes won't be as disappointing!

It struck me as being somewhat careless when it came to plot elements, and as having... odd pacing issues. I'm glad that more people are hearing about this great game, at least. Looking forward to neo : ) great vid!

I found it got better over time. Only 1 episode left. It's pacing and characterization got better as weeks 2 and 3 came along. It's week 1 that's not very good unfortunately. Neku's too soft. However, I decided too try something, I've been watching it with a friend who isn't normally into Square Enix games too watch it with me as new episodes have been coming out and he's been enjoying it quite a bit! He loves the mysteries and characters of it all. He finds that Neku being less of an ass was probably done for a show so he'd be more approachable to new people. The perspective has been interesting. Neku still does have growth, just not as much, and I've found him too be really compelling as the last couple episodes have happened. While I feel it needed 3-4 more episodes especially for week 1, I'm satisfied with this. I'm hoping though it gets dubbed and they are able too add in a couple new scenes like Neku's speech and tweak Neku's animations so Jesse can record lines of him being a jackass too everyone. Pipe dream I know, but eh, a man can dream.

Watched the first episode today...The sheer amount of stuff they glossed over or just changed for no reason is astounding.
Clearing the missions in 2 seconds,Even skipping over having to take the long route to Hachiko's Statue
The fact that Neku now gets possessed by the Noise instead of trying to kill Shiki out of his own choice
The fact they just walk to the concert hall instead of waking up in there and having to figure things out
The tech guy also being a shinigami which really adds nothing to the story? And also skips over the whole MEME introduction
Taking away the secret guardian and in doing so,Diminishing the bond with Beat.
This and the fact they never give anything time to breathe just makes the story feel way worse then it actually is.
Its like they're telling the same story,But skipping over all the important details and characters just to get to the "Good Part"

I think it's nice as an entry point for a casual non-fan. (And this is coming from a DS veteran). If they're interested enough to play neo, they already have a switch and would most likely pick up the relatively cheap port of the original. And I mean the Persona 5 anime was worse than this imo, and we know from that fiasco that a bad anime doesn't cheapen the game. It should've had better pacing and characterization, but what were you honestly expecting from a 12 episode anime? A decent adaptation would've had to have 22-24 and would've had the time to introduce the game jargon like pins, psychs, RG/UG, ect at a pace that wouldn't overwhelm a casual.

  • @ExemplarKyle

It almost feels like the writer/scripter for the show only watched a plot recap of the game and didn't actually play the game. Between the lack of internal monologues (which Neku does the entire first two thirds of the game) and the lack of pins during combat, I just feel like the show's creators missed some critical game elements that the anime is sorely lacking.

Having finished the anime a while back, I definitely agree that it's just a lil' gift for the fans. I honestly can't imagine enjoying the anime without having played the game first; there's just way too much of a disconnect between what made TWEWY as a game incredible and what the anime is able to pull off. That being said, there were a lot of things about the anime that genuinely surprised me.
There were actually a lot of original tracks made for the show, a lor of which are really good, and the 3D CGI was actually pretty nice looking for the action scenes. (The noise looked wack sometimes, but the characters looked a cut above average imo, which is impressive considering how stylized they are).
Then there are the extra scenes with Eri and Rhyme which really caught me off guard. We didn't get Shiki looking at her phone, but damn it was cool to see Eri in-person and how she was struggling with Shiki's death; not to mention that sick moment when Neku realizes they look the same. Same thing with Rhyme; it's been a hot minute since I played the original TWEWY, but I don't remember Rhyme being present for too long before she got chomped, so it was really nice to see her get some more characterization.
Even with its issues, I honestly still think it's a solid watch for fans of the series.
I dig your channel dude, keep up the good work!

I had a blast watching this but only because I already knew the story as a TWEWY fan. It was inevitable-I mean they had the impossible task of cramming 21 "days" worth of story, context, and development into only a handful of episodes but I'll give them kudos for fleshing out certain things like the reaper duo's offtime, what Beat was up to after he went offscreen, a bit on Eri and Neku in the flower shop. I fucking loved actually seeing the action scenes, it was cool AF to see to yolo into noise together-makes me wanna boot up my switch and chain some noise for funsies hahaha
It was never gonna work but I do go gaga for TWEWY content...and they DID release some banger soundtracks.

The pacing for this anime is bad. It feels so rushed and it doesn't give us enough time to make us feel for the emotional moments, especially the storyline with Shiki and Eri.
The second week in the anime even cut out two missions from the game that would flesh out the characters a bit, the ramen mission and the Gold Tin Pin Slammers mission. In fact the anime, cuts out Tin Pin Slammers and Reapers Creepers all together.

Yeah I feel the animation was just a treat for the fans. Seeing the characters actually be animated and the combat movement was nice to see. When the artstyle of the anime it’s very crisp and clean. The CGI needed some work but it still worked ok. With a bigger budget and maybe extending the episode count to 24 maybe would’ve given more breathing room to scenes and let the days actually last longer. And get those inner monologue moments. But like I said I think this was just more a treat for the fans of the game rather than it is to actually get newcomers to watch this as a legitimate series

  • @sorual4604
    @sorual4604 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree with almost everything you said. Like the bit about the pin images flashing on screen? I was SUPER hype when that happened, but the person I was watching with had no idea what those were. Also, VERY poor characterization for Neku. As for the combo attack animation though, I think the reason you didn't get much out of it was that you played the DS version. The mobile and Switch versions have "cross combos" that are basically exactly what was animated. Also, the pins worked exactly as I thought they would. I just thought that as long as they wore them, they had those powers. And pins drop from noise, so using new ones made sense to me.

  • @kiyokosakuraba1150
    @kiyokosakuraba1150 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I had the same hesitations about the first episode too, I'll be honest. Neku's character came off too soft and was lacking the bite and edge that I had grown to love. I had to explain it to my friend that by no means was he supposed to be a good or nice character in the beginning. You weren't supposed to like him off the bat and the anime felt lacking in that area so all the story beats that followed felt hallow and forced. It's his change from the beginning to end that really hooked me as a player and without getting the starting place I was familiar with, I'm worried the end result will feel just as hollow.
That being said, by golly has week two stepped up the game. Joshua's character is just that edge of all too knowing and cocky and it's wonderful to hear his and Neku's banter voiced. Josh's expressions when talking about the UG and changing Shibuya is golden, especially from past players who know his ultimate goal. He addresses Neku when talking about that change and it adds a whole new layer to the end. Not to mention Mr. H being his lovely wonderful self and watching him and Josh interact was doubly interesting.
The fights have amped up as well with the addition of watching the other players face off and lose to the Taboo Noise so everything has a sense of urgency the game lacked. The syncs are the meteors I knew and loved and today's episode introduced Joshua's Jesus Beams in a satisfying way and I couldn't really ask for a better handling of the past few episodes, give or take a few snarky lines I missed from the game.
Character development is starting to feel much more natural and while the pacing is fast, like you said, it's impossible to fit everything in to 12 episodes. I miss some of the growth from the game and by no means would I recommend the anime over playing the game but after the first three episodes, it's done pretty well and I think will serve as a way to introduce new faces into the fandom and reunite the old fans over something we love getting new adaptations and a sequel.
Here's to stepping back into the UG and being able to have fun with a story we all love.

It’s funny how they rushed this out in 12 episodes just to release the Neo demo right after it finished only for them NOT to include A New Day content which serves as the transition from TWEWY to Neo. They had plenty of time to do it in the last episode too, from making the final boss a joke that doesn’t even last until the opening credits start playing to having the ending occur around the middle point and just have the remaining 10 minutes just be Mr H and Joshua shooting the breeze. Heck, when Beat and Neku were talking about going to see the new CAT art, I thought for sure they would throw in Coco, have her shoot Neku and run off since that’s ultimately all that mattered in the grand scheme but no. The anime was just a missed opportunity all around with the crunch time that was ultimately for nothing when it came to being a crash course for newbies playing Neo and other than it being a novelty of having an anime series, I agree that it’s not the definitive adaptation the series deserves. But hey, at least it wasn’t as bad as the Persona 5 Anime, amiright?

My biggest issue with the anime is the pacing, which I get it probably because there were days in the game that didn’t last very long. Another issue I had was Neku’s character; he’s just so boring. He’s supposed to be angsty and antisocial, he would express his anger to everyone, but in the anime he’s so bland. He does express some emotion in certain situations in the anime but he then shrugs it off immediately like nothing happened!

Personally, I don't think the anime is doing a terrible job. While I agree that the game is superior as it fleshes things out a lot more, I completely understand why the anime is a little rushed, since it's primarily supposed to promote the sequel. The recent episode that came out today was actually really good, but the show definitely has its downs, such as erasing Neku's intro that's necessary to understand his character in the beginning.

Perhaps some disappointment that the anime might not have covered any bonus content from Final Remix, and Solo Remix, so the long time fans at least have something they can watch to get caught up on the new stuff?

  • @flashbash2

So like, one of my BIGGEST gripes was that they removed pins from combat. That's like taking Pokemon and removing Pokemon or Yugioh and removing cards. For someone who doesn't really watch Anime, even I know that there is so much precedent for a combat mechanic that defines a genre. There's mechs, Beyblades, monsters, cards....why not pins?
I would have really preferred them to take their time and set up a world where pins were an actual mechanic and not just be so confused at what to do that they remove them entirely from combat. I guess that's all my gripes with this show. It didn't take the time to set things up. It has a decent to good story nestled in a mess of a world that wasn't fully explained or explored properly.

First episode gives me webtoon anime vibes. Seems like the source material is good but the anime wants to rush by it to get the "good stuff" when the good stuff are good because of the time it takes to set it up, build, and then the pay off.

  • @RomanticPhantom0

they had 12 episodes, it was an adaptation to summarize game 1 before game 2 for new fans. obviously there are many loveable things from TWEWY 1 that could never really be adapted to anime. the shopping, running around to all the tunes, the many psychs and methods to use them effectively... i can forgive it, at least the production value is good. :3
as far as the characters, they are all certainly toned down, i think that was the most jarring thing for me. but i mean i already knew everything about them from being obsessed with the first game. so i didn't need them to be developed. xD

    Heavy Spoiler ahead:
The first episode, heck, the first week was totally rushed, although it gets better almost at the end of the first week, almost like they are starting to pick a good pace, but yes, the impact of Neku attempting murder towards Shiki trully was entirely lost, but at least they didn't messed up that scene, if you watched, you know very well which one was, and the ending of the week 1 was a gut punch too for me, instead of the "resurrection" of the game, it straight up shows her being taken as the entry fee, and it doens't seems good,
Week 2… I don't have much to say about it it has a nice pace and, actually, the anime did somethings better this time, like Sho gives a way more impressive first inpression as game master, they also trimmed up a bit of the fat, like the tin pin slammer mission, I do like both Sota and Nao, but still, that day was pure filler, and they manage to convince me to care for them again in the anime, so it was kinda sad when both died, just didn't affected much because I already knew their fates, my only complain towards week 2 in the anime is: Leo Cantus fight was kinda underwhelming, but not horrendous, and that Sho didn't recited the 150 first numbers of PI before his flare,so it is kinda sad too
Now week 3 started good since there isn't much happening too at the start of this week in the game, just Beat and Neku rolling around looking for Konishi, tho I was surprised by the fact Konishi takes a page from Baal and decided to put Rhyme on her boobs.
Anyways, as I stated before, not much happens too, other than 777 fucking dies like in the game, also thanks god they decided to keep out the box puzzle
Everything was going fine and dandy until the last episodes, that's where the anime dropped the ball hard, we don't see sho under a pile of trash, Neku and Beat don't fight Kitaniji and Shiki at the Dead God's Pad, actually, Neku don't even fight Kitaniji in his human form, he straight up goes as Anguis Cantus with Shiki as partner, and after both defeated, Draco Cantus without a Joshua barging in to justify his second transformation, he just transforms, and the Room of Reckoning isn't even the last place in the underground, as it is in the game, it is actually the Trail of the Judged, as the hidden place where Neku finally reencounters Joshua, and it is where the final duel takes place too. Atleast they choose a nice place that mirrors where Neku died, but still, too many things altered without reasoning at the end
Atleast they showed Neku's Gang chilling around Shibuya while Mr H gives us the some of the exposition from the game

Cool game. Reminded me of Kingdom Hearts - Never finished it. Wanna know why they don't cross over well? Because they're different industries and different professions. They have their own method of the way they do things and don't cross lines. So they stick to their own methods hoping to bring OTHER people to their world especially when they try to stay true and faithful to the following of the original content and they end up messing it up. What people forget and "DON'T" know how to do is just create the ORIGINAL content (as is). Much how they messed up the X-Men movies trying to universalize it and bring everyone in to one sitting because really, different entertainment is different universes to those of the profession. It NEVER looks this way to kids. Kids go, "Why can't they just port it?". (Trust me I've said the same thing when young,....Cough cough Double Dragon/Super mario Bros. Movie, Cough),....excuse me. Also developers sometimes don't wanna port over their original version directly (Like the Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney games to anime (good series by the way), because its like "What's the point" to them. They lose money on the game watching the anime because the anime "IS" the game. So the game has nothing to be desired even when games are a completely different experience and unlike Walkthroughs that can be watched on youtube, they have to be played to be enjoyed. But for something like Ace Attorney, kinda destroys it. So it boils down to the "TYPE" of entertainment. Anyone know anything about the Parasite Eve (original book/ movie) and game series? Some things is a mess. So that's why its hard. Its a Pika-CHoose your one game to movie and vice versa cross media kinda-thing. I know ALL about it. No one knows it better. I was supposed to be your cross media porter before I got stopped. Not only these things, but it breaks down to style, who's doing it, who's porting or re-creating it, everyone wants to do it or want to be a professional but don't know what the HELL they're really doing because at the end of the day, it's just a job to some of them. True, but to some fans, its everything they every dreamed of because when you're young, its your universe, your personality, and everything you talk about, because let's face it. Those of us into this, have no life and the reality of life gets bluntly mundane at times never living up to our expectations. Thnx to Larry Houston, X-Men the animated (90s) series came out pretty good.
