Preach those butterbeans Mae Mae! Preach, preach sister! Thank God for you teaching the young cooks real old fashion cooking when food was off the chain good. My grandmother, Mama and I do the green and speckle butter beans as well as collards and cabbage EXACTLY like you do and Lord have mercy its so good. Those of us born in the 50s on back, was and are so blessed to eat the best food and now God have able you to show your blessed gift of teaching. Pray for me, I'll be starting my channel soon. I pray at 71 God will able me to be of some use also. God bless you, Tuck and the family. I love you all.

Thank you Mrs. Mae for all your time, effort, love and explanation. Both of my grandparents passed many years ago, when I was barely a teen. Everytime I watch you cook, it reminds me of my grandfather, my grandmother too. But I remember most this particular dish he'd make. His and grandma was the only okra and beans I'd eat. I know I'd feel right at home in your kitchen. I say all this because I truly miss those invaluable lessons of the kitchen, most younger cooks don't cook like this anymore. I'm definitely a young old person lol. Thank you so very very much for being a grandma, mother, best cooking Auntie to us all. Blessings to you and your dedicated husband behind the scenes.

Learned a lot with this video. Never saw someone cook and pour off that first water off that smoked meat. Got to try that! And did not know to trim okra like that. And never added sugar to my butter beans.. I have got to try all your tips. Thank you. It was after I married when I was fortunate enough to have my Husbands Grand mother to teach me to cook and can foods. Those were some of my best memories. And she kept a kettle on the stove as well for the hot water.

I laughed so hard when you made the comment about how it was back in the day. I hear the younger, mainly mothers that i work with, talking about what their kids won't eat and having to cook this for that one and something else for the other one. They seem in awe when i tell them there was one meal cooked and that's what everybody ate if you didn't want that you went to bed hungry and sometimes crying. And don't be too late getting home if chicken is cooked, cause do, you got two choices the back or the neck. 😄

I cook this but add can to petite diced tomatoes and a good sprinkling of chili powder. I also cut my okra rather than leaving pods whole. It is good anytime of the year. Usually fix a potato salad to go with it and either pork chops or fried chicken. So very good.

Grandma would cut a few pieces of smoked jowel bacon with the butterbeans. Then serve them with some kind of meat usually fried pork chops or chicken, a big bowl of fresh cut onions and one for fresh tomatoes, corn on the cob, fried yellow squash, and either hot cornbread or hot corn pone patties. When we went to Grandma's in the middle of July or first of Aug that's what we had for supper. My Dad was 1 of 9 Boys and he had 2 Sisters. Some summers we would have 35 people to feed for supper. So all the Daughter-in-law's ( the one's that didn't work or was on vacation like Mom) helped everyday with breakfast ( serving 11 sometimes a few more) then right away cleaned up and got things figured out for supper. Great times riding with my LEAD FOOTED GRANDPA TO THE PIGGLY WIGGLY TO GOT WHAT WE NEEDED. HE DROVE 90 MILES AN HOUR ON THOSE HILLS AND HOLLARS TO THE STORE WHICH WAS ABOUT 6 MILES, FELT LIKE 25! 😆 MY MOM DIDN'T KNOW WE HOPPED IN HIS TRUCK. DAD GOT A LASHING ON THST ONE. MY SISTER TOLD MOM. I DIDN 'T SAY A WORD. JUST 😆!!!
