Polymath-plumber makes unique furniture & artifacts from waste

  • Self-taught designer Fernando Abellanas considers the city his playground. One day he drove under a highway overpass in his hometown of Valencia, Spain, and inspired by the concrete columns and overgrown vegetation, he returned later to install a prefabricated microstudio on the underside of the bridge.
    Using the existing concrete beams of the bridge as roof and walls, he built a two-part “urban cabin” that only takes shape when he cranks one part - a horizontal elevator- to connect with the furniture portion, which hangs anchored to the opposing wall.
    Abellanas designed, built, and installed the structure single-handedly and nearly everything he has crafted in his life. He rebuilt his home on his own, including the roof, floors, plumbing, and nearly all the furniture. A self-taught plumber by trade, he didn’t have a formal design education, so he used his home as a showroom for his work.
    Today, he sells his furniture under the label Lebrel. He continues to work as a plumber to ensure funding for his subversive urbanism projects (which include boating inside an inundated Valencia metro tunnel and crafting a train “car” from an old motorcycle for a 9-kilometer journey down a new Spanish rail line).

    I grew up with the mindset of everything being hard to do.
    I heard this many times
    - your stupid
    - he’s gonna fail
    - we don’t want his help
    - I “can’t”
    With help and my own desire I changed my thinking. I am not a college grad. I highly encourage education. I more so encourage a positive way of thinking. I am going to share a few skills I bring to the table
    - cook
    - barber
    - wood working - rustic furniture
    - graphic design
    - plumbing
    - irrigation
    - sales
    I am extremely thankful for the University Of TH-cam. It has helped me refine my skills and has develope new ideas.
    Growing up I was my worst enemy. Most of my low self esteem was very mental. I see this person on this small clip and I’m amazed on how much he has learned. He’s very creative and talented. He’s fearless. I am so moved on what the mind can do.

      I may not have a formal education, but I love to learn and am very curious and creative, also considered and consider myself an intelligent individual. I need to find this guy and be friends with him, we would get along very well, you too dfelixrx7! I share some of your mentioned skills while having some different ones. I quite enjoy TH-cam and modern day internet for fostering a community of knowledge seekers, DIY'ers, builders, creators, creatives amongst others. I find it hard to find like-minded people, living in a rural area, not many people share the same thirst for creating, learning, etc. I have a lot of friends that are afraid of trying to do anything, always saying they can't, and their answer is most often no no when I ask them if they did try it or they failed the first time and gave up. Olympians didn't get on the podium without failing many times. I love to see that there are other people out there that aren't afraid of failing and that keep trying to find a solution or way. Keep on refining and developing, we need more of us to help foster future generations, cause as he mentioned in the video, today's young generation is overprotected. So we need to show them not to be scared of trying!

    Someone mentioned that in USA u need all kinds of Permits. Everything requires a permit here in Spain too. It's just that some people circumvent the permits and create. I don't think Fernando is too worried about permanence. It's about experimenting with materials and forms and creating something functional and original. People like you are hung up on a word; "engineer".
      Fabricators are, and always have been, naturally engineers. Engineers, now-a-days, are mainly picture-drawers that use software to do the math that fabricators and engineers of old used to do by hand. Engineers stand on the shoulders of fabricators. Engineers often have no clue what it takes to fabricate even the simplest object. Engineers take what fabricators have done, and then just draw pictures that copy their work and call it engineering. Every advance in human history was done by a fabricator first. Fabricators started building structures first. Fabricators started building vehicles first. Fabricators started building aircraft first. "Engineers" just screw around with pen and paper (now software) trying to figure out the math to explain what fabricators know innately, or figured out on their own. This guy? He's awesome but first and foremost, a fabricator.

    • @ryandury
      @ryandury 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@georgianbents moot point. Neither word means you're incapable of something. To suggest an engineer often has no clue how to fabricate a simple object is ridiculous. In the end, who cares? Just go make stuff instead of getting all wrapped up in semantics.

    • @specsa.1426
      @specsa.1426 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      georgianbents No offense, but you sound like me when I forget to turn off my “unnecessarily confrontational” button. I get what you’re trying to say, but your willingness to pass judgment on people based off of the fact that they identify as engineers is what’s a bit silly here. Especially since the original comment didn’t even directly contradict what your actual point was, so it’s confusing why you chose this one to go off like this. If you paint with a broad brush, you’ll miss all the details, my friend.
      You might try to approaching these conversations with a bit more flexibility. It’s not so bad once you realize most people are more than willing to engage with your ideas, when they’re not presented with such an aggressive demand to be heard as true (:

    • @donkmeister
      @donkmeister 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@georgianbents From what you've written, I don't think you understand the point of engineering disciplines... It's not just "do a drawing and figure out the maths". The whole point of engineering is that you don't just create something useful, you create something useful that functions as you want it to, and you understand what limits need to be placed on that something in order to keep it functioning as you want it to. Sure, the first planes were not built by engineers - how many crashes per mile of flight did they achieve? How do you think that compares with engineered aircraft of today? 😜
      In many things in life the materials and techniques are a known quantity so the rule of "if it looks right, it probably is" applies. Such as what this chap has done - I doubt he's done any engineering there, he even explained he didn't do the structure of the house, which given his skills suggests he didn't feel comfortable being the sole brain behind something so critical to his house staying up. Quite sensible if you ask me!
      That's not to belittle the work of fabricators, but your description of engineering is like saying surgeons are just butchers who try and put meat back together.

    I totally get this guy. As a visual artist, I could always make anything as long as it was "just art." People were more accepting of odd creations on canvas or as a "mere" sculpture.
    I've done installations too, but I love this guy's childlike fort building and city exploring attitude. I used to design so many crazy things that could be used and lived with and lived within. I sometimes built them if I had the skills. I might try to enlist the help of a significant other. He'd often just say "why" or "these things aren't really worth it in the end." I now own many power saws and have increased my skills so I can build many of my visions myself.
    When I finally got my own house and started making things happen, my S.O. asked me why everything had to be a project. Sad day.
    I really need to learn to weld though.

    I live in a Small Town, in North Texas. When I was a kid, growing up on the 1960's I sometimes walked the two miles to Town. To buy parts, for my Mini Bike. We lived, near a Highway. And there are two over Passes, on the way to Town. I had all kids of dreams and ideas. On how you could build a Fort or even a Place to Live, under there. If you had no other place to live. I didn't try to build a Fort there. It was too far form my house, to drag Wood and Tools. I did build a nice big Tree House. It Spanned 5 Trees and was Two Stories. Well, it had an open Balcony, on top, that is... Fernando, is definitely a kid, at heart. It's cool, to see that he was able to do this. I am surprised, that the local Authorities. Haven't torn it down. I don't think you would even be able to get started building something like, that here. Without, being stopped by the local Cops. One, thing that is common, here. And has been, as far back as I can remember. Homeless People, often live in the tops of Bridge Over Passes. Near the Larger Cities. Like Dallas and Fort Worth. Only Temporarily, though. They get run off, ever so often. Also, people park their Cars, under Over Passes, when a Hail Storm or Tornado, is coming through. There are differing opinions. On whither or not it is Safer under there, during a Tornado. Some say, that the wind of a Tornado. Will Suck you out. But, I have also seen. News Reports, showing People. Who, hid under the Eves of an Over Pass. During a Tornado, and lived to watch their Cars, get totally destroyed, below them, on the Ground. This, got me to thinking. That if strong Doors, were built in those Top Cavities, in our Over Passes. They could Provide, many Safe Places for People to run and hide, from a Tornado. When Caught on the Road, in Tornadoes or even High Wind. I like how, Fernando. Built his own Home and Furniture. I was a Cabinet Maker, when I was younger. And still have a dream of building my own Log Cabin and all of the Wood Work, in it. Another Great Video, Kirsten!:) I watch all of your Videos. Waiting for the next one... What a Blessed Family, you have. To be able to Travel with your kids and see all the Wonderful Places and Homes...

Indeed, some ideas that come with the force and naïveté of children are bold and close to the works of good polymaths; maybe because some people have the ability to persevere in adult life despite the need for everyday utility. It's not Zombie proof because eventually you WILL run out of food and have to come down again. By, that point when you come back down, Kirsten would just film your death as the Zombies eat you.

    Este español la sacó del estadio. Genial este espacio entre lo etéreo y físico. El concepto de la separación del alma y cuerpo, muy poético, muy evocador. "Gondolero del Futuro. Felicitaciones!!!

    Perfect home and what I want to do. So many places in Taiwan are like that house. 3 or 4 story of ugly, not well maintained homes. I want to gut one and rebuild simply and beautifully like this.

    I love his house and furniture. What beautiful, simple design! If I lived in Spain, I would certainly hire him to design my house. Me encantan la casa y los muebles. !Que diseno mas sencillo y bello! Si yo vivera en Espana, certamente le contrataria para disenar mi casa.

    Wow, this is so cool! The world needs more creative people to inspire others. Perhaps creativity is infectious, one person is inspired, they other inspire others, and so on.

    Inspiring work and life. Some of the comments have said it all, I would add that an observation mindset makes a difference. I have an 8 year old daughter that teaches me to observe everyday; it is amazing how much you see but never really observe. Keep your inner child alive! Thank you for sharing.

    Was wondering the purpose or how each design creation could be applied and/or function in practical terms and advantage this gentleman... First, he needs to come out so that his genius could perhaps be utilized on a larger scale and reach those thinkers who would ideally think of avenues to take this man to the next level... Very interesting capture of this man's individuality...
    Thank you.

    This man is a legend, absolutely love what he's made and done. I think my favourite part of the video was where he showed his train go kart like machine, it made me laugh how open he was about not having a license for it and also, how he just broke into the doors and just started building it. The way he thinks is ingenious, I love how raw it is and how honest he is as well. Really hope to meet Fernando someday, seems like a good dude!
