great question! the new cave shapes from update 32 add a nice amount of variety to the game, especially the on-site refining caves. the heartstone room at the end of an escort duty is often absolutely massive and fun to explore. lots of cool variety to mix things up in the other mission types as well. overall all the new stuff is cool and good.

A small thing to add since the new mission types were added:
-Escort Duty missions generate linear caves.
-On-Site Refining missions generate caves similar to Point Extraction ones.
The second point made me think of another name for these caves - centered caves (as in, most of the important things are in the central room).

    • @alephkasai9384
      @alephkasai9384 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yeah escort duty generate linear caves but the separate caves are quite far from each other, you actually have to be touching the wall to even try and see the other caves on the map.
Which is pretty neat since even in it's category of technically being linear caves it's still unique.

I have just over 1000 hours in DRG myself and I feel every much the same way about the game as you do. I have never seen Early Access done this well. The developers listen to their community like no other studio I know of, nail the updates, takes what needs fixing seriously, updates their technology, including Unreal Engine 4 and give updates to development via roadmaps etc. Overall DRG is the best $25 I have ever spent on a game.

The two new mission types were added, On-site Refinery and Escort Duty.
Refinery is a Centralized type mission, where you have a central room and minehead you stay with, except you build pumps and pipes to extract and refine Liquid Morkite.
Escort is a hybrid of Linear and Centralized, where you defend a drill on its way through several caves to a precious gem. It goes through a linear set of caves, yet the fight always revolves around the drill.

Having a Compressed Gold + Bittergem + Error Cube is stupid rare at the same time. But somehow I've come across it twice, withing about a week.

One thing you didn't touch on is the frankly absurd number of enemy waves you get during Point Extractions. The starting population of the cave is an initial hurdle, but the longer you stay the more and more frequently random packs of bugs dig out of the walls to get you. Once you get over 20 minutes it's effectively constant harassment interspersed with swarms!
...I guess that's kind of beyond the purpose of this video, though.
Also how dare you sneak a Mactera into a picture of "passive creatures".

I wish there was an other type of salvage operation, one where we do not extract mules or drop pods from failed missions, but one where we collect scrap from all the equipment we leave behind. (oil refineries, point extraction platforms and drill dozers). The mission length could correspond to how much equipment we need to salvage.
Alternatively it could also be bonus objectives instead of full missions. A bonus objective could during any given mission be, go scrap and salvage parts from a drill dozer or an oil refinery, along with its pumps.

Fun-fact: the reason the previous team failed was their test trials of the mini-mules, giving each dwarf a mule to go do his own thing.
But as we all know "dig together, or dig your own grave"

Initially, I wondered how no mans sky has randomly generated music, but it could be how pikmin 2 handles its cave music. In short: having each instrument and their track kinda like puzzle pieces that are assembled based on what you are doing, so essentially pikmin 2's cave music is personalized.

The thing about DRG procedurally generated levels is it's not entirely true, there are many times you'll play and say "Hey I've seen this one before", because it is the same level, sure the more fine details might have moved but the level plays out the same way generally and I'm not talking about Deep Dives. There have been times where a level looks so cool and memorable, that another level eventually will use the same template. I believe that's what the levels are, there are the basic templates, then the finer detail is random.
Edit: After watching the video, I KNEW IT, some of the "random" rooms are just handcrafted
