In the comics, we've gotten a shadowy glimpse of a unicorn that seems to be this alicorn (same hair style). In the couple of panels she was in, she butts in line in Ponyville, Fluttershy tells her she has to wait her turn like everyone else, the evil unicorn tells her something along the lines of "unicorns have better things to do than wait in line" and pushes Fluttershy to the ground (which is why I believe she was indeed a unicorn at that time, otherwise, she'd have said "alicorns"). I can see why people may guess that she's Chrysalis. At the end of season 10 in the comics, it shows Chrysalis starting to break free of her statue-prison, and Chrysalis has already taken the form of a unicorn to cause fractures between the species near the end of season 9 in the show, and from what we've seen of Opaline in the comics, she essentially did the same thing, it caused absolute chaos in Equestria, which lead Twilight to create the 3 crystals (this is what Discord has told us.....so I guess we could take it with a grain of salt, Discord being Discord). In the little bit of animation I've seen, Opaline talks about magic belonging to her. Is it possible she's a "false princess" like Cozy Glow was at the end of G4? By consuming a ton of magic, Cozy Glow who was a pegasus, became an alicorn. Could be Opaline has done the same thing. Or she came by her alicorn form legitimately. I mean, we've been told that becoming an alicorn requires a pony to do something extraordinary, but never has it ever been specified that 'something' has to be GOOD. lol XD;
Yes good point! They just have to do something extraordinary from what we've seen. But then again what about other villains? They've done some massive accomplishments, but then again none of them are PONIES in the matter. Apart from Sombra and Cozy glow, but even then, Sombra isn't technically a pony due to the comics; he's an Umbrum. I LOVE this theory but there could be some plot holes, what exactly could be so astonishing in a BAD way that turns her into an evil alicorn?

I can see Opaline being an evil distant successor. Celestia almost made a similar mistake once. Sunset shimmer was, at first, a good student, but she let slip her true personality when she became hungry for power, which only showed later in her studies.
i've always thought it was flurry or maybe her kid. especially because flurry would have been spoiled so she might not have grown a moral compass, and it felt like such a waste to only ever have her as a baby. but i feel like if the writers wanted to make the villain connected to flurry heart, it would probably be her kid. although the idea of flurry heart using sombra's dark crystal magic is really interesting, and leads to the lesson of "those who don't learn history are doomed to repeat it". but i'm not sure they'll do specific lessons in episodes anymore
I actually think none of these are true! She's the unicorn in Discords story from the comics! Discord mentioned a unicorn that divided everypony! That could be her! but mabye she collected the mistrust and hatred between ponies to turn herself into an alicorn and was waiting for magic to return so she could use that preciously collected mistrust and hatred to counteract the returned magic! This could also tie into why Discord wants magic gone because he could be aware that that unicorn (He may be unaware she is an alicorn now) wants it to happen! So mabye ye thinks that if he gets rid of magic for good, Opaline can't continue with her evil plans and that equestria is safer without magic BECAUSE of her possible plots!
Personally I love the theory that Opaline was a fallen princess. I have a sub-theory that she became the new princess of Equestria by a pass princess that we don't know about in the future after Twilight's rule, around 2-4 generations after Twilight. When Opaline became Princess, slowly overtime things obviously turned for the worse and she became power hungry for dominance. I would say it wasn't always like this, and she was trying to be a good ruler, but most likely she did get power hungry overtime. She might be the one that separated the unity crystal in the first place, since magic disappeared within the Mane 5's lifetime. I feel like the time placement makes sense within the context of Opaline becoming a princess, but slowly got casted out by her people to where they don't really mention her, and so she wants revenge by taking magic away for everyone. If this theory is somehow true, we can have a flashback episode where they show the past princesses and how Opaline how her role as princess. I really hope she's not just a generic villain, because if she is that generic. It would ruin more of what G4 has built with its lore, and G5 has already broken enough as is.
I think the Chrysalis theory is possible, seeing that creatures can be freed from a stone state and Chrysalis can change form. Your theory sounds good as well, definitely better than having her as a random unexplained villain. She would be kinda like Sunset Shimmer pre-reforming.
What if Opal is Sunny's long-lost mother? It doesn't sound right one bit, but it could at least explain why she was never mentioned, why Argyle believed in unifying the three tribes, and how Sunny became an alicorn so fast... I guess.
Opaline being one of the later Alicorn successors was almost immediately what I thought. Of course it could be something new and more complicated, but this makes sense too. And her behavior/mindset and how things seem to be for the continent now, you could rightly connect those! Actually I think It would be nice if after the whole of g5 it finishing, she's developed into a more worthy successor, and understanding where these new ponies are coming from(where they need help), and they can accept her too. I wanted so bad for Opaline to be Radiant Hope because she kinda looks like her and this would be the first time in history that they ever used an original comic book character in an mlp series I know it isn’t Radiant hope but I want it so bad to be her XD
I think Opulean could be Twilight's daughter, or Flurry Hearts Daughter, the Main reason is that Opulean has purple skin and a white mane, Shining Armor and Cadince can both be either grandparents or uncle and auntie. Shining Armor' s white skin could be triat she inherited from his bloodline and from his father's bloodline too also Twilight's mother also has white Mane too. Both Twilight and Candice both have purple skin Opulean could have gained those traits from them too and Fluffy Hearts too.
I’m now thinking Flurry Heart. A weird detail in an episode with the zeppelin where Flurry was stacking baby ponies into a tower and the baby tower fell over, the parents of the kids applauded Flurry. Later on, the parents pushed their babies toward Flurry, one said to her kid “Go make an ALICORN friend”. This shows how some ponies see Flurry. They were already taking opportunities to get close to Flurry for her influence when she was just a baby! I have a feeling that perhaps Flurry became Opaline because being born as a royal led to many fake friendships where the ‘friends’ took advantage of her and would encourage her even when Flurry was doing something wrong because the ponies only wanted her favour. As seen in G5, with Sunny, her campaigns and that (pony pop music group?) Since Shining Armor doesn’t live as long as Cadence, the responsibility of ruling the empire mostly went to Cadence, so she wouldn’t be able to protect Flurry from those ponies like she could when Shining was young and Flurry was a baby. Twilight would be busy too with the school. Thus, enabling a Flurry surrounded by bad influences, the belief of being superior to other ponies (because they go with anything she wants to do) and ruling all of Equestria is her birthright. Furthermore, the blue eyes, her mane color, her name has “OPAL” in it and that she is the only live alicorn we see after magic disappears and Twilight It feels a bit odd to put a baby alicorn in the show and make her ridiculously powerful too. I mean she broke the Crystal Heart by screaming…then have nothing for her to do for the show (other than be merchandise) unless she was designed to be powerful enough to be Twilight’s downfall Pure speculation below : A natural born alicorn would have innate magic from the three tribes (which formed the friendship fire) and since Cadence is her mother, she might be resistant to the magic of the Crystal Empire. Flurry being Opaline could also explain why Twilight removed magic instead of dealing with her like all the other villains in the past with the elements of harmony. Flurry stealing a large quantity of Equestria’s magic, then add her natural gifts. What if Flurry was too powerful for Twilight and the others to subdue/contain her? (Flurry could be resistant) That the only options left was to remove magic or use full force and kill her. Twilight wouldn’t be able to do that to her niece, Cadence wouldn’t allow anyone to kill her daughter. However, Flurry was a threat to all of Equestria. Thus a sacrifice was made. Twilight took away Flurry’s magic and the magic of Equestria she had stolen and put them away into three crystals. The Pony tribes took their crystal to guard it, and ran as far as they could to prevent Flurry from getting back her powers. The first era of Friendship had come to an end, its memory forgotten and transformed into legends then eventually myths to the modern era of ponies. (Remember in 1st episode of MLP, after 1000 years the ponies forgot about Nightmare Moon and only Twilight could guess who she was? That’s what happened here with G5 and Opaline. As long as the crystals were seperated, the ponies were safe from Opaline).
She's a mad usurper who murdered the existing Alicorns to steal their power and ruled as a tyrant. The creatures of Equestria, in one last desperate attempt to stop her, recreated the ritual Cozy Glow performed to rid Equestria of magic, thus rendering her powerless and she's been in hiding ever since.
I've always felt iffy towards Luster Dawn. I have a feeling that she kinda had a skill issue with training Opaline and now she's the way she is. But, that's just my theory.
I think the most likely theory is that Opaline was a unicorn that saw who wanted friends, but no one wanted to be because of reasons we still don’t know. As we saw in the G5 Discord comic, she was in the shadows manipulating ponies into giving up friendship, because if she couldn’t have friendship nopony would. This would lead to Twilight creating the crystals. Opaline would then come to Twilight showing her her skills, eventually making Twilight realize she had potential to be one of her students. With years of studying and training, Twilight would see her potential and make her a princess and her successor. Unfortunately Twilight would see what she truly is, trying to rule Equestria with an iron hoof and keep the pony tribes separated. Which she ultimately did. Twilight would then stop her and seemingly destroy her. But Twilight knew she was still out there, so in other to keep Equestria safe she separated the crystals and given them to other ponies. They would not come together until the ponies relearn the magic of friendship and one day a pony and her friends would defeat Opaline for good.

Given the stained glass window seen in the movie, it's believed that when the three gems were separated, one of each pony race was entrusted with a gem. The purple unicorn is believed to be Opaline. That's the most I've got myself. She gained Twi's trust while causing the chaos in the first place; hoping to keep all the magic for herself. Why and what for? Who knows yet. For now, that's my best theory.
According to the comics (and depending on how much you trust the word of Discord) she was possibly the one who soon after The Last Problem caused everypony to hate each other resulting in Twilight banishing magic so no tribe member could have the upper hoof over any others. I guess the result was the culling of all three tribal herds until only a couple hundred Earth Ponies were left, a couple dozen Unicorns, and swarms of Pegasi. Really Zephyr Heights could easily take over the world with just their numbers alone now that they have flight and superior technology much like the Pegasus Enclave of Fallout Equestria.
I was thinking opaline could be flurry heart's little sister. Somepony that didn't have as much natural magic as flurry heart. Alway was in flurry's shadow. Maybe even getting tricked by sombra to get more magic.
I have something to add to the it's Rarity's cat theory, what if they were turned into a cat because of their evil doings but once Rarity went to pony after life she took her chance of becoming an alicorn again, and after everyone left canterlot she claimed it as her own. Was that *too* crazy?
In fact I stand for either the fact that she is one of the next princesess who just been a bad choice or just come in wrong time OR the fact that she is somehow related to Flurry Heart no matter if she'd be Flurry herself, her daughter OR *maybe FH's sister*. I mean come on, history likes to repeat itself, we had Luna jealous over Celestia, time for Flurry's younger sis to be jealous that Flurry was born alicorn and Opaline had to maybe steal magic to become one. My guess is that she’s one of the jewel keepers that were shown in the stain glass windows, that wanted more and sought to gain more power… perhaps doing something to the others and stealing magic from either them or the crystals in order to become an alicorn in a sorta Cozy Glow way
In the official G5 comics, Opaline was a miserious unicorn who one day came to Ponyville, spreading her ideas that unicorns are superior to other ponies, dividing all races in the process, later she became in an alicorn and started to believe that all the magic belongs to her, so she would try to steal it.
My Theory: When Flurry Heart grew older, her mother, Princess Cadance, told her a story of her mother. Cadance's mother was the princess from the fairytale of the love potion (the potion that made Big Mac and Cheerilee fall in love). Her name was Bright Essence and she and her husband's kingdom fell down after the love potion ensued. Before passing away, Bright Essence's best friend was MistMane, one of the pillars. Cadance told Flurry about how MistMane fell in love with the evil King Sombra and then had a foal together- named Opaline. When MistMane gave birth, she wore the alicorn amulet which made Opaline be born as an alicorn! Opaline met Celestia and Luna but they misunderstood her and left Opaline behind to work on their own magical, royal studies. Opaline grew jealous and she, as a fire alicorn, decided to grow her powers to make herself much stronger. While Twilight hid the three kinds of pony magic in the crystals, far away on the other side of Equestria, Alphabittle and Arya Belleflower were expecting a filly. She was born and then named Misty. She accidentally ventured too far and Opaline found her. She adopted Misty and taught her everything she needed to know. Twilight's plan with the crystals obviously failed and that brings us to present day!! !! ❤❤ ❤❤
Interesting theory but I’m hoping we get to hear her whole story in MYM chapter 2. I know she appeared in the IDW comic series where she corrupted and turning the pony races against one another in the past. Guess we’ll wait and see what happens.

Opaline must've been in g4 too... In the hologram, twilight wasn't the huge full grown alicorn ( like we saw in the end of g4 season 9) when she was warning the future ponies ', which means that opaline was there all along, but for some reason she wasn't shown in g4. That's what I think

Celestia had sunset shimmer, twilight had Cozy Glow. what if luster, trying to give everyone a chance like twilight taught her, chose the wrong one. Notes: Lol, Opaline is an Alicorn race supremacist. “Immortal rulers… none of this equality and unity stuff.” Throughout G4 characters stole and abused magic. The average everyday pony was probably sick of constant instability from all the wars we saw in G4. If magic is gone, alicorns are largely gone. Twilight dismantled the monarchy, but the Pegasi wanted that continuity so established their own. Their world seems to have shrunk. Maretime bay is tiny! Is that seriously where *all* of the earth ponies live? I think the other G4 kingdoms may have been wiped out sadly.
I don’t think she’ll be related to anyone from g4, just for the problem of newer fans needing the context of the old show. My personal theory is that she is a far successor to twilight. I think that she could have been made an alicorn by the then current princess, but when opaline realized the power she would hold once the current princess was gone, she started to go evil. Insert something something current princess seals her away due to not being able to fully take her down/being unwilling to kill her, sucks the magic out of equestria to keep her there (possibly sealing them in the gems to provide a way for those who come after her to take opaline out) and promptly dies/goes dormant. When magic got loose again, it either broke the seal to opalines prison or it gave opaline enough power to break out, and now she’s gonna reclaim her throne, as she is technically the rightful heir. Idk if that’s gonna happen I just like it
The way she talks makes it seem like she was born an alicorn, but besides that I don’t have any ideas where she came from. I doubt she’s an evil version of someone, more like cozy where it’s just that she’s evil, not magically corrupted to some level. But I do have to question why twilight decided it was best to separate the different magics in gems, she already learned the elements did not work for the reason she became reliant to some level on the gems and not her friends themselves. And we already know what happened with the three pony races back in the day with the Wendigo’s. But obviously something happened to the Wendigos if they’re no longer a threat, and the other races from g4 the only thing I can guess is Opaline herself went race by race slowly taking magic from everyone, including the wendigos, to the point when Twilight realized, that only thing she could do is separate magic. Lastly as far as Twilight, I have the feeling not all magic has returned to equestria, and the rest of it is with her. She knew earth pony magic would become a thing too, which then leads to the question was that really a message left behind or was it her actually trying to send a message through, or to some level did she learn to see into the future? I was really hoping for a little extra thing for Twilight at the end of chapter 2 for a little more answers
Yeah she was probably born as one, possibly to someone with a similar ego. Not necessarily evil, however. But also someone able to live long without magic, like say a dragon? Rarity for her ego and potential vibes "Oh my precious opaline, born an alicorn. She will be amazing". Combine that with possibly being Spike's daughter, her dragon genes would make her greed over gems, ergo with her name being a gemstone... She'd greed over all things that are her, including her powers.
I definitely agree with you on her being a wayward Princess. I feel she'll be loosely connected to Gen4, maybe not a direct descendant of any characters we know but likely a part of one's family tree. I really hope this isn't another Cozy Glow situation where she simply wanted the magic to be, "SUPER DUPER POWERFUL AND EVIL". She seems to understand the way magic works and believes it's hers by right. This leads me to believe she's perhaps a failed Princess candidate, one who didn't meet expectations and was banished or discarded a long time ago. Maybe due to her failure she's the reason a proper Princess couldn't be established, and magic faded away from Equestria. I hope her dynamic is one more so of guilt at its core, and the mystery pony we see is the only friend she has or believed in her. It'd be nice to see villains like Nightmare Moon or Starlight who had those deeper but relatable flaws. I'm hoping she's too arrogant and proud to admit that it's her fault magic went away from Equestria because she was too selfish and self-centered, but deep down she struggles with a lot of denial and guilt. I'm hoping her resolution is one about admitting your flaws and realizing being a Princess is the willingness to learn from others you deem lesser than you, as well as her friend helping her in some way. Either way I just really hope they don't go with just edgy evil alicorn.
My theory is that she stole the crystals to take their power to become an alicorn and tampered with them to make them more sensitive. Because she was the whole reason the crystals were created according to the g5 comics
I created a lot of mlp g5 theory art and some of them maybe right or wrong but I'm made a fan story of opaline and sombra as husband and wife, but before I get into it do you remember the defeat of king sombra in g4? But what if, opaline bring sombra back to life in g4 secretly? What do you think?
this evil pony is a sorceress who has locked away during gen 4 then once the races started fighting each other the magic that was keeping her imprisoned faded away and she was set free to rule all of Equestria.
Didnt the 2nd comic say she was a student of twilight? And normally students of princesses tend to be preparing to become a princess, like twilight and Celestia.
I like the idea of her being a successor. She now feels the right to rule the kingdom now that magic is back but my oh my... who is this little orange pony with a hint of alicorn magic?
My thought is that the mystery surrounding this character is purely created to keep people interested, the reason they haven’t told us more is so we’ll keep interested until the release of the first episode and continue to watch the new series to find out more, I honestly doubt it will be as exciting as we hope it to be and if that’s the case perhaps us fans should be writing the series instead because the theories and stories I’ve heard sound much more interesting compared to what we’ve gotten recently. I think the answers aren’t in this villain’s name or appearance as she seems to have no magical items on her and her appearance doesn’t really match any known characters enough to be 100% positive or even 50% positive that she is an already existing character. In this character’s appearance I have noticed that the bracelets she wears are tiny angry looking alicorns, they are also not like the other alicorns hoof decorations being only bracelets instead of being shoe-like, maybe that’s something or just a design preference with this character? We really can’t be sure. Personally I would like to see the concept art for this villain, I bet it was better than the final design 🤔 I think the answers may be easier to discover if we look beyond the pony and to her castle and surroundings instead.
I feel like it being a new character will be what happens, we already know opaline is the shadow unicorn from the comic (she def self ascended herself later on). While random new villian is obv a cause for concern, the backstory stuff is being built up with what happened from g4 to g5 in the comics

What I kinda find interesting tho. It seems like every succession that equestria had so far were unicorns that have a celestial type cutie mark. Celestia with the sun, Luna with the moon, twilight with stars, and even sunset shimmer having that similarity. Like ofc that means their choice have some sort of magic ability but it kinda seems like celestial bodies cutie mark+ strong magic+ any other connection to cutie mark (like with the tree of harmony ) = princess candidate. Not saying flurry heart couldn’t become the ruler of equestria but if I had to guess her cutie mark and destiny is gonna be with the crystal empire considering she’s already a princess on top of that . We don’t know opaline’s cutie mark like that but judging by her name alone it seems like a crystal pony adjacent. I don’t want to say cadence’s bloodline or anything like that but someone from the crystal empire.
Also this may be one whole stretch but another reason I feel she’s from the crystal empire is purely a pattern. Rulers of equestria are sisters (even thru marriage). There’s always three princesses present (celestia, luna cadence, new gen: twilight, cadence, flurry) and it doesn’t seem like the ruler of equestria ever marries. If no one ruled after twilight thru the choosing process (no one with celestial name or cutie mark.) then we can assume that it’s mostly a direct bloodline from the crystal empire. So I’m guessing the crystals is like the new choosing process and sunny starscout is twilight’s new successor. Leaving opaline-

Evil Sweetie Belle is a funny suggestion. I used to call her Beastie Belle due to her behaviour in "For Whom the Sweetie Bell Tolls". I've got a better nonsensical theory in which she is the granddaughter of the Young Six who bonded and made different hybrid species as parents. All those theories kind of stray from the mysterious unicorn in the IDW comics. Wild theories aside, Opaline is going to be either a formidable or slack opponent against the Mane Five. Still Opaline is so hideous, she certainly wouldn't make such a great pony toy figure.
Or maybe she wants all the magic for herself thinking that only her deserve it to govern over ponies that she judges losing their harmony so she needs to be some kind of dictator, i hope that she doesnt just come out of the blue and be evil just for nothing and make her having some kind of sad backstory🤩
Here's hoping Hasbro makes a nice toy of her. If they're gonna be boring and make every single toy in stock poses they can be less boring and give us loads of new ponies.
I think opal could be successor of Twilight but sometime in her rule she got corrupted with power Twilight see this and stops it but Opal was left still corrupted and became greedy over power and feels that she should still be the right ruler . Just my theroy

In the couple of panels she was in, she butts in line in Ponyville, Fluttershy tells her she has to wait her turn like everyone else, the evil unicorn tells her something along the lines of "unicorns have better things to do than wait in line" and pushes Fluttershy to the ground (which is why I believe she was indeed a unicorn at that time, otherwise, she'd have said "alicorns").
I can see why people may guess that she's Chrysalis. At the end of season 10 in the comics, it shows Chrysalis starting to break free of her statue-prison, and Chrysalis has already taken the form of a unicorn to cause fractures between the species near the end of season 9 in the show, and from what we've seen of Opaline in the comics, she essentially did the same thing, it caused absolute chaos in Equestria, which lead Twilight to create the 3 crystals (this is what Discord has told us.....so I guess we could take it with a grain of salt, Discord being Discord).
In the little bit of animation I've seen, Opaline talks about magic belonging to her. Is it possible she's a "false princess" like Cozy Glow was at the end of G4? By consuming a ton of magic, Cozy Glow who was a pegasus, became an alicorn. Could be Opaline has done the same thing. Or she came by her alicorn form legitimately. I mean, we've been told that becoming an alicorn requires a pony to do something extraordinary, but never has it ever been specified that 'something' has to be GOOD. lol XD;

But then again what about other villains? They've done some massive accomplishments, but then again none of them are PONIES in the matter. Apart from Sombra and Cozy glow, but even then, Sombra isn't technically a pony due to the comics; he's an Umbrum.

I actually think none of these are true! She's the unicorn in Discords story from the comics! Discord mentioned a unicorn that divided everypony! That could be her! but mabye she collected the mistrust and hatred between ponies to turn herself into an alicorn and was waiting for magic to return so she could use that preciously collected mistrust and hatred to counteract the returned magic! This could also tie into why Discord wants magic gone because he could be aware that that unicorn (He may be unaware she is an alicorn now) wants it to happen! So mabye ye thinks that if he gets rid of magic for good, Opaline can't continue with her evil plans and that equestria is safer without magic BECAUSE of her possible plots!
Personally I love the theory that Opaline was a fallen princess. I have a sub-theory that she became the new princess of Equestria by a pass princess that we don't know about in the future after Twilight's rule, around 2-4 generations after Twilight. When Opaline became Princess, slowly overtime things obviously turned for the worse and she became power hungry for dominance. I would say it wasn't always like this, and she was trying to be a good ruler, but most likely she did get power hungry overtime.
She might be the one that separated the unity crystal in the first place, since magic disappeared within the Mane 5's lifetime. I feel like the time placement makes sense within the context of Opaline becoming a princess, but slowly got casted out by her people to where they don't really mention her, and so she wants revenge by taking magic away for everyone.
If this theory is somehow true, we can have a flashback episode where they show the past princesses and how Opaline how her role as princess. I really hope she's not just a generic villain, because if she is that generic. It would ruin more of what G4 has built with its lore, and G5 has already broken enough as is.
I think the Chrysalis theory is possible, seeing that creatures can be freed from a stone state and Chrysalis can change form. Your theory sounds good as well, definitely better than having her as a random unexplained villain. She would be kinda like Sunset Shimmer pre-reforming.
What if Opal is Sunny's long-lost mother? It doesn't sound right one bit, but it could at least explain why she was never mentioned, why Argyle believed in unifying the three tribes, and how Sunny became an alicorn so fast... I guess.
Opaline being one of the later Alicorn successors was almost immediately what I thought. Of course it could be something new and more complicated, but this makes sense too.
And her behavior/mindset and how things seem to be for the continent now, you could rightly connect those!
Actually I think It would be nice if after the whole of g5 it finishing, she's developed into a more worthy successor, and understanding where these new ponies are coming from(where they need help), and they can accept her too. Making a new era

I think Opulean could be Twilight's daughter, or Flurry Hearts Daughter, the Main reason is that Opulean has purple skin and a white mane, Shining Armor and Cadince can both be either grandparents or uncle and auntie. Shining Armor' s white skin could be triat she inherited from his bloodline and from his father's bloodline too also Twilight's mother also has white Mane too. Both Twilight and Candice both have purple skin Opulean could have gained those traits from them too and Fluffy Hearts too.
I’m now thinking Flurry Heart. A weird detail in an episode with the zeppelin where Flurry was stacking baby ponies into a tower and the baby tower fell over, the parents of the kids applauded Flurry. Later on, the parents pushed their babies toward Flurry, one said to her kid “Go make an ALICORN friend”. This shows how some ponies see Flurry.
They were already taking opportunities to get close to Flurry for her influence when she was just a baby!
I have a feeling that perhaps Flurry became Opaline because being born as a royal led to many fake friendships where the ‘friends’ took advantage of her and would encourage her even when Flurry was doing something wrong because the ponies only wanted her favour. As seen in G5, with Sunny, her campaigns and that (pony pop music group?)
Since Shining Armor doesn’t live as long as Cadence, the responsibility of ruling the empire mostly went to Cadence, so she wouldn’t be able to protect Flurry from those ponies like she could when Shining was young and Flurry was a baby. Twilight would be busy too with the school.
Thus, enabling a Flurry surrounded by bad influences, the belief of being superior to other ponies (because they go with anything she wants to do) and ruling all of Equestria is her birthright.
Furthermore, the blue eyes, her mane color, her name has “OPAL” in it and that she is the only live alicorn we see after magic disappears and Twilight
It feels a bit odd to put a baby alicorn in the show and make her ridiculously powerful too. I mean she broke the Crystal Heart by screaming…then have nothing for her to do for the show (other than be merchandise)
unless she was designed to be powerful enough to be Twilight’s downfall
Pure speculation below :
A natural born alicorn would have innate magic from the three tribes (which formed the friendship fire) and since Cadence is her mother, she might be resistant to the magic of the Crystal Empire.
Flurry being Opaline could also explain why Twilight removed magic instead of dealing with her like all the other villains in the past with the elements of harmony.
Flurry stealing a large quantity of Equestria’s magic, then add her natural gifts.
What if Flurry was too powerful for Twilight and the others to subdue/contain her? (Flurry could be resistant) That the only options left was to remove magic or use full force and kill her.
Twilight wouldn’t be able to do that to her niece, Cadence wouldn’t allow anyone to kill her daughter.
However, Flurry was a threat to all of Equestria. Thus a sacrifice was made.
Twilight took away Flurry’s magic and the magic of Equestria she had stolen and put them away into three crystals. The Pony tribes took their crystal to guard it, and ran as far as they could to prevent Flurry from getting back her powers.
The first era of Friendship had come to an end, its memory forgotten and transformed into legends then eventually myths to the modern era of ponies. (Remember in 1st episode of MLP, after 1000 years the ponies forgot about Nightmare Moon and only Twilight could guess who she was? That’s what happened here with G5 and Opaline. As long as the crystals were seperated, the ponies were safe from Opaline).
She's a mad usurper who murdered the existing Alicorns to steal their power and ruled as a tyrant. The creatures of Equestria, in one last desperate attempt to stop her, recreated the ritual Cozy Glow performed to rid Equestria of magic, thus rendering her powerless and she's been in hiding ever since.

I've always felt iffy towards Luster Dawn. I have a feeling that she kinda had a skill issue with training Opaline and now she's the way she is. But, that's just my theory.
I think the most likely theory is that Opaline was a unicorn that saw who wanted friends, but no one wanted to be because of reasons we still don’t know. As we saw in the G5 Discord comic, she was in the shadows manipulating ponies into giving up friendship, because if she couldn’t have friendship nopony would. This would lead to Twilight creating the crystals. Opaline would then come to Twilight showing her her skills, eventually making Twilight realize she had potential to be one of her students. With years of studying and training, Twilight would see her potential and make her a princess and her successor. Unfortunately Twilight would see what she truly is, trying to rule Equestria with an iron hoof and keep the pony tribes separated. Which she ultimately did. Twilight would then stop her and seemingly destroy her. But Twilight knew she was still out there, so in other to keep Equestria safe she separated the crystals and given them to other ponies. They would not come together until the ponies relearn the magic of friendship and one day a pony and her friends would defeat Opaline for good.

From the earliest theories I could remember, she's Radiant Hope.
Given the stained glass window seen in the movie, it's believed that when the three gems were separated, one of each pony race was entrusted with a gem. The purple unicorn is believed to be Opaline. That's the most I've got myself. She gained Twi's trust while causing the chaos in the first place; hoping to keep all the magic for herself. Why and what for? Who knows yet. For now, that's my best theory.
I doubt that they'll go this route, but I really like the idea of Opaline being Twilight's daughter.

According to the comics (and depending on how much you trust the word of Discord) she was possibly the one who soon after The Last Problem caused everypony to hate each other resulting in Twilight banishing magic so no tribe member could have the upper hoof over any others. I guess the result was the culling of all three tribal herds until only a couple hundred Earth Ponies were left, a couple dozen Unicorns, and swarms of Pegasi. Really Zephyr Heights could easily take over the world with just their numbers alone now that they have flight and superior technology much like the Pegasus Enclave of Fallout Equestria.
I was thinking opaline could be flurry heart's little sister. Somepony that didn't have as much natural magic as flurry heart. Alway was in flurry's shadow. Maybe even getting tricked by sombra to get more magic.
I have something to add to the it's Rarity's cat theory, what if they were turned into a cat because of their evil doings but once Rarity went to pony after life she took her chance of becoming an alicorn again, and after everyone left canterlot she claimed it as her own.

My guess is that she’s one of the jewel keepers that were shown in the stain glass windows, that wanted more and sought to gain more power… perhaps doing something to the others and stealing magic from either them or the crystals in order to become an alicorn in a sorta Cozy Glow way
In the official G5 comics, Opaline was a miserious unicorn who one day came to Ponyville, spreading her ideas that unicorns are superior to other ponies, dividing all races in the process, later she became in an alicorn and started to believe that all the magic belongs to her, so she would try to steal it.

My Theory:
When Flurry Heart grew older, her mother, Princess Cadance, told her a story of her mother. Cadance's mother was the princess from the fairytale of the love potion (the potion that made Big Mac and Cheerilee fall in love). Her name was Bright Essence and she and her husband's kingdom fell down after the love potion ensued. Before passing away, Bright Essence's best friend was MistMane, one of the pillars.
Cadance told Flurry about how MistMane fell in love with the evil King Sombra and then had a foal together- named Opaline. When MistMane gave birth, she wore the alicorn amulet which made Opaline be born as an alicorn!
Opaline met Celestia and Luna but they misunderstood her and left Opaline behind to work on their own magical, royal studies. Opaline grew jealous and she, as a fire alicorn, decided to grow her powers to make herself much stronger.
While Twilight hid the three kinds of pony magic in the crystals, far away on the other side of Equestria, Alphabittle and Arya Belleflower were expecting a filly. She was born and then named Misty. She accidentally ventured too far and Opaline found her. She adopted Misty and taught her everything she needed to know.
Twilight's plan with the crystals obviously failed and that brings us to present day!! !! ❤❤ ❤❤
Her horn looks a lot like Sombra's horn, so I think she is his daughter or at least a descendant of Sombra

Opaline must've been in g4 too... In the hologram, twilight wasn't the huge full grown alicorn ( like we saw in the end of g4 season 9) when she was warning the future ponies ', which means that opaline was there all along, but for some reason she wasn't shown in g4. That's what I think

I don’t think she’ll be related to anyone from g4, just for the problem of newer fans needing the context of the old show. My personal theory is that she is a far successor to twilight. I think that she could have been made an alicorn by the then current princess, but when opaline realized the power she would hold once the current princess was gone, she started to go evil. Insert something something current princess seals her away due to not being able to fully take her down/being unwilling to kill her, sucks the magic out of equestria to keep her there (possibly sealing them in the gems to provide a way for those who come after her to take opaline out) and promptly dies/goes dormant. When magic got loose again, it either broke the seal to opalines prison or it gave opaline enough power to break out, and now she’s gonna reclaim her throne, as she is technically the rightful heir. Idk if that’s gonna happen I just like it
The way she talks makes it seem like she was born an alicorn, but besides that I don’t have any ideas where she came from. I doubt she’s an evil version of someone, more like cozy where it’s just that she’s evil, not magically corrupted to some level. But I do have to question why twilight decided it was best to separate the different magics in gems, she already learned the elements did not work for the reason she became reliant to some level on the gems and not her friends themselves. And we already know what happened with the three pony races back in the day with the Wendigo’s. But obviously something happened to the Wendigos if they’re no longer a threat, and the other races from g4 the only thing I can guess is Opaline herself went race by race slowly taking magic from everyone, including the wendigos, to the point when Twilight realized, that only thing she could do is separate magic. Lastly as far as Twilight, I have the feeling not all magic has returned to equestria, and the rest of it is with her. She knew earth pony magic would become a thing too, which then leads to the question was that really a message left behind or was it her actually trying to send a message through, or to some level did she learn to see into the future? I was really hoping for a little extra thing for Twilight at the end of chapter 2 for a little more answers

I definitely agree with you on her being a wayward Princess.
I feel she'll be loosely connected to Gen4, maybe not a direct descendant of any characters we know but likely a part of one's family tree. I really hope this isn't another Cozy Glow situation where she simply wanted the magic to be, "SUPER DUPER POWERFUL AND EVIL". She seems to understand the way magic works and believes it's hers by right. This leads me to believe she's perhaps a failed Princess candidate, one who didn't meet expectations and was banished or discarded a long time ago. Maybe due to her failure she's the reason a proper Princess couldn't be established, and magic faded away from Equestria. I hope her dynamic is one more so of guilt at its core, and the mystery pony we see is the only friend she has or believed in her. It'd be nice to see villains like Nightmare Moon or Starlight who had those deeper but relatable flaws. I'm hoping she's too arrogant and proud to admit that it's her fault magic went away from Equestria because she was too selfish and self-centered, but deep down she struggles with a lot of denial and guilt. I'm hoping her resolution is one about admitting your flaws and realizing being a Princess is the willingness to learn from others you deem lesser than you, as well as her friend helping her in some way. Either way I just really hope they don't go with just edgy evil alicorn.
My theory is that she stole the crystals to take their power to become an alicorn and tampered with them to make them more sensitive. Because she was the whole reason the crystals were created according to the g5 comics

I like the idea of her being a successor. She now feels the right to rule the kingdom now that magic is back but my oh my... who is this little orange pony with a hint of alicorn magic?
I always thought it was Celestia because of her color scheme of her hair in Chapter 1.
My thought is that the mystery surrounding this character is purely created to keep people interested, the reason they haven’t told us more is so we’ll keep interested until the release of the first episode and continue to watch the new series to find out more, I honestly doubt it will be as exciting as we hope it to be and if that’s the case perhaps us fans should be writing the series instead because the theories and stories I’ve heard sound much more interesting compared to what we’ve gotten recently.
I think the answers aren’t in this villain’s name or appearance as she seems to have no magical items on her and her appearance doesn’t really match any known characters enough to be 100% positive or even 50% positive that she is an already existing character. In this character’s appearance I have noticed that the bracelets she wears are tiny angry looking alicorns, they are also not like the other alicorns hoof decorations being only bracelets instead of being shoe-like, maybe that’s something or just a design preference with this character? We really can’t be sure. Personally I would like to see the concept art for this villain, I bet it was better than the final design 🤔
I think the answers may be easier to discover if we look beyond the pony and to her castle and surroundings instead.

What I kinda find interesting tho. It seems like every succession that equestria had so far were unicorns that have a celestial type cutie mark. Celestia with the sun, Luna with the moon, twilight with stars, and even sunset shimmer having that similarity. Like ofc that means their choice have some sort of magic ability but it kinda seems like celestial bodies cutie mark+ strong magic+ any other connection to cutie mark (like with the tree of harmony ) = princess candidate. Not saying flurry heart couldn’t become the ruler of equestria but if I had to guess her cutie mark and destiny is gonna be with the crystal empire considering she’s already a princess on top of that . We don’t know opaline’s cutie mark like that but judging by her name alone it seems like a crystal pony adjacent. I don’t want to say cadence’s bloodline or anything like that but someone from the crystal empire.
Also this may be one whole stretch but another reason I feel she’s from the crystal empire is purely a pattern. Rulers of equestria are sisters (even thru marriage). There’s always three princesses present (celestia, luna cadence, new gen: twilight, cadence, flurry) and it doesn’t seem like the ruler of equestria ever marries. If no one ruled after twilight thru the choosing process (no one with celestial name or cutie mark.) then we can assume that it’s mostly a direct bloodline from the crystal empire. So I’m guessing the crystals is like the new choosing process and sunny starscout is twilight’s new successor. Leaving opaline-

Evil Sweetie Belle is a funny suggestion. I used to call her Beastie Belle due to her behaviour in "For Whom the Sweetie Bell Tolls". I've got a better nonsensical theory in which she is the granddaughter of the Young Six who bonded and made different hybrid species as parents. All those theories kind of stray from the mysterious unicorn in the IDW comics. Wild theories aside, Opaline is going to be either a formidable or slack opponent against the Mane Five. Still Opaline is so hideous, she certainly wouldn't make such a great pony toy figure.

Comics imply that she was already making a mess when Mane6 were around so Opaline can't be related to any of mane6.
The thing is, she clearly was in the comics, so her being a late relative of Twilight or her daughter wouldn’t make sense.
The Mist Mane is probably based on her horn being curved. That’s it.

I think opal could be successor of Twilight but sometime in her rule she got corrupted with power Twilight see this and stops it but Opal was left still corrupted and became greedy over power and feels that she should still be the right ruler . Just my theroy

Remember how pinky pie has pinky seance what if she tried to warn twilight not make the the crystals but she didn’t lessen and when pinky pie tried to stop her and did something that made twilight get stuck in the crystals and until the crystals were brought back together she couldn’t communicate and when pinky pie told other ponies the started arguing with each other and then the separated each leader taking a crystal and Opalen was twilights new puple and she thought she should be in charge of the pony world
My guess is like at least glimmer or one of her friend form the old village.
