There is definitely something cathartic about hanging clothes outside. The smells, the sun, the clothes blowing in the wind- the simplicity of it is good.

I don't understand why, in the hot climate of Texas, you all use a dryer. They dry in no time on a clothesline. Most people in my world in Queensland, Australia air dry the washing. We only use a dryer in wet weather or winter. I love the fresh air smell of my clothes, towels and sheets especially when they're air dried.

Hi Stephanie, my name is Kim from New York. I’m a Special Education Teacher and have watched your family on the Hill for several years. Todays video prompted me to comment because the SAME THING JUST HAPPENED in our household. When the dryer breaks everything seems like a huge chore UNTIL YOU HAVE ALL CLOTHES HANGING OUTSIDE, THE SMELL IS SO NOSTALGIC. I think in your past life you may have lived on a prairie with several children and Buddy was a horse wrangler! 🤷🏻‍♀️ Just a thought. Anyway, here in the North our Amish Communities hang their clothing outside in the dead of winter! Imagine that. They just break the ice of the clothes and bring them inside. FASCINATING 😮 Thank you and your family for all your beautiful content and the sweet spirit you show in everything you do, truly refreshing. Hope to talk again….. Kim from New York 👩‍🌾

After more than 100+ consecutive days of over 100⁰+ heat using a clothes dryer or dishwasher would never occur to me. It's already miserably hot - I would avoid adding more heat. In reality I haven't utilized my clothes dryer in over 20 years. I'm not certain it still functions. I hang my clothes on hangers to dry and have a retractable clothes line over a tub and another in the garage. I keep 2 collapsible clothes drying racks in the garage to handle smaller items. Georgia heat isn't as extreme as Texas but laundry also dries quickly here - less than an hour during warm weather. The smell of laundry dried outdoors always triggers fond memories from my youth. Steph's positivity and caring heart is always a treat! Obviously Levi bringing her clothespins touched her. Steph and Buddy are indeed a couple to be admired.

Brings back memories of my childhood. My parents are from Ireland and she rarely put clothes in the dryer (even in winter), because she never had one growing up. Well several friends from Ireland moved into our neighborhood and you could tell the immigrants homes, everyone had clothes lines, no Americans did 😂 I also grew up with “put a sweater on, if your cold” that heat wasn’t going above 65, no matter what. Again, they grew up with no heat in the house and it’s freezing in Ireland in the winter, you do get use to it and adjust (we went home often for Christmas), my dad’s favorite “the wind is lazy in Ireland, it sooner go through you, then around”
Oh, this all changed once I had children, their home was like a furnace so they could “keep the kids warm”. They also got the great snacks, name brand cereal and sweets. I always laughed and gave my parents a hard time (for fun) 😂. They were wonderful and miss them everyday

Steph when I had my oldest daughter, was the first time in my adult life I didn’t work, I was a stay at home mother. I felt I would do my part and use cloth diaper and hang all my clothes to dry. Some of my favorite memories of her when she was little was putting her in the clothes basket as I hung all those cloth diapers on the line and watching her play. She was born in 1984 that truly was a simpler time. 💞💞

karenallen9868: I hope your relatives got their a/c fixed by now. When we had to have a new (outside) unit installed several years ago (because it had been hit by lightning) our homeowners insurance/mortgage company paid for it. Then a few years later when the inside unit had to be replaced, the power company paid 60% of the replacement cost because we had them come out and do a "power usage" inspection before getting the new unit. That helped a whole lot. Y'all stay cool up their. We live just over the Alabama line in the Florida Panhandle.

You found one of the best kept secrets - the happy place of hanging laundry. Glad you enjoyed it and although it takes extra time it is very satisfying. Laundry is one of my favorite things. I take photos of the full lines on laundry day - kind of like a laundry diary. One little tip I can give is to fluff them up in the dryer before taking them out to the line - the items will be easier to hang. They do sell small umbrella style sock hangers for the socks.

Oh Stephanie, we still have the clothesline my father built in the 50's. Iron steel T poles on each end and 6 heavy wire lines We just use for rugs and quilts, maybe anything very large to dry now. We got lazy, use the dryer for everything else. Ours just recently went out. My sister refused to hang outside on lines ( she hates this AZ heat)so I made 3 lines inside the laundry room until it was fixed. We still have mom's clothes pin sack that hangs on the line as you hang clothes, has so many pins inside. Memories always hanging clothes with mom ( we did not have dryer then) grandma had lines, used a Y end tall pole to raise the line after she hung the clothes so they wouldn't touch the ground. Cool Memories.

Steph, you can fold the sheets all lengthwise folded 2-3 times. Then hanging. Same with T-shirt’s. Over night they will dry but with shade you can turn them half way thru. I found this in Europe and hang all my stuff that I don’t want in dryer. Been doing it for about 30 years. Super fast if in the sun! Good luck:)

Showing my age here but, when my oldest 2 kids were babies I used real cloth diapers, and there was something really pretty looking at those clean perfectly white diapers drying on the line in the breeze. Thanks for bringing me back to that memory.

I have a dryer, but prefer to use my washing line it smells so naturally fresh..
I only use my dryer when it rains for weeks.
Even in winter when it freezes I prefer to use my clothesline. It then dries so fresh and soft that no fabric softener can beat it.
It's nice to see that it actually turned out better for you drying your laundry outside.
Have a nice weekend for everyone

I love air dried clothes, I love the smell, I love the feel of my lined dried clothes and sheets. Fortunately I live out in the country, no evil HOA to forbid me from line drying my laundry. 💖💖💖

I was kidding about HOA I know you all live in Morrow hill!! I hear do many people complain sbout not being able to put up clithes lines. I gave a rack in the yard that is around 70 years old! I have hung laundry out in nice weather for years! You’re right nothing better than smelling fresh laundry off the line! You should smell it in the spring!
    Love your videos!

I miss hanging clothes outside. That fresh air scent is amazing. If they are too stiff, then place them in the dryer for 5 minutes. Well, that is when your dryer is working again.

Hey Steph I’m 81 and totally remember there was was nothing like a clothes dryer and every one hung clothes out to dry. When I first started my family and we used cloth diapers it was just expected to hang all the baby clothes out to dry. Something about it being more hygienic if they were sun dried. I loved laundry day the smell of the clothes and the whiteness from the sun and the satisfaction of perfectly folded piles of folded laundry. Call me crazy but I miss doing some housework that wasn’t 😂🧺🧹🪣done by an appliance.

I loved hanging laundry out back when I was in a house and had clotheslines. I hung everything! Clothes, sheets, towels. It didn't matter. If it got washed and it wasn't below 32° or raining outside it got hung to dry. The sheets especially smelled so good on the bed.
I'm going to be interested if this is something you well delve into a little more. It will make your dryer - once repaired, or replaced - last longer as it will have fewer hours usage.
I'm sorry that so many things are 'going south' on you and the family. But, as you said, everyone is well and that's all that counts!
    Thank you for sharing Steph!!!!!

LOL - I did not think it would go from fresh clean laundry to fresh killed chicken! LOL you crack me up, but yeah I can see where you could feel that way - so pioneerish!! LOL this is great! I enjoyed it and maybe got inspired to do a little laundry line myself and test the waters a bit. You might even learn to LOVE it! 👕👕👕👕👕

When i was a little girl we had a clothes line in our backyard. I loved the smell of the clothes when they came in fresh off the line. In the heat we are having in Texas, the clothes should dry quickly. If you can't find clothes pins...go to the office supply isle and get the metal binder clips. They come in all sizes and can be used to close chip bags, i have even temporarily hung curtains up! They work great!❤

My mom always line dried our clothes in the summer. They smelled like sunshine when you put them on. ❤
