  • I invited Josh and Ash from the Way Away - to come over to my house and eat some very special treats ;)
I was curious how they would react to our Drop (aka Liquorice) so that's what we tried. From sweet drop to salty, and of course some Salmiak. Hope you'll enjoy!

Holland and its love of Drop. Two tastes come together the salt of Amonium chloride (salmiak) and an extract from the roots of the licorice plant, which in dutch is called zoethout. Together with a binding agent usualy gum arabic (arabische gom in dutch). Makes the chewy salty goodness that is licorice or Drop in dutch.

Ik snap heel goed dat je niet meteen de link legt tussen zoethout en drop/licorice. Bij zoethout denken wij toch meer aan zo'n zoethouttakje waar je op sabbelt of de theevariant met een zelfde smaak.

Ug, it tastes like ammonia, like rotting meat would taste if you ate it. Tried the
      kind that looks like coins.

I really like how you were down to earth (not as loud and over-done as others) and how you brought several versions of the drop. What more can we ask, haha, you've defineately earned a thumbs up ^_^

If you know chemistry you know that normal food salt consists of a cation Sodium (Na+) and an anion Chloride (Cl-) but in Dutch licorice another salt also is used with the name of Salmiak: a cation Ammonia (NH4+) and an anion Cloride (Cl-) with this special flavor that you like or hate :)

The trick is lure them into a false sense of security. Start off with Stroopwafels, Poffertjes etc, then on the end give them double salt drop. The look of shock and betrayal in their eyes is priceless
