One of my favorite albums! That guitar tone was perfect!
I spoke to Bobby on instagram a few years ago about this tone. He told me he went straight into his ADA MP1 with an EMG 81 for this tone and used a Rocktron RX10 stereo imager/exciter (similar to a BBE sonic maximizer which he started using later live) as well. Power amp was a solid state Carvin. Not sure what the speakers were, likely the G12-65 or G12T-75’s that were popular in those Marshall cabs in the 80’s.
Good info man, I was hoping a few people would come forward with that. I was using EMG 81’s all week but they weren’t crunchy enough
I saw them at London Astoria sometime around 1990, absolutely mental gig, they had to stop around five times as the crowd was going apeshit , more people in the air than on the floor, and people literally jumping from the second storey balcony
You’re really lucky they never came over to the UK much after this, I wish they had toured with Testament in the early nineties. Overkill are one of my favourite thrash bands.
Terry Date production was sick. DD’s bass tone combined with Bobby’s sick tone made Overkill!!
Awesome to see some love for Overkill..
Thank you so much for doing some Overkill. I've just bought Years of decay, taking over and under the influence on CD. I've been wanting to buy those albums for years. For me Overkill in the 80's had something that not many other thrash metal bands had and they never got the respect.
Bobby G used ADA MP1 with solid state (Rocktron Velocity?) poweramp on Years of Decay. I had a chat with him over facebook some years ago
Thanks man, I had a feeling it was the mp1. It’s a great tone he got there
Maybe a Carvin fet 401 power amp.
But I can also hear a jcm800 layered in there...mp1 alone isn't thick and defined enough.
If you listen to Bob Rock about the Black Album he reveals he used a jcm800 very subtle for midrange because the Mesa was too scooped... I think it's the same approach for Years
Real metalheads never overlook years of decay that album just a legend as mop
Years of Decay is their Masters of Puppets
And Horrorscope is their…and justice for all. And I hear black is their…black..album. 😅
@@nategin9009 imo it’s the third best Metallica album ride the lightning then and justice followed by master
@@joshferguson9703 nah puppets is boring. They peaked at ride the lightening and kill em all beats puppets and justice. Puppets is over produced and sounds muddy.
Bobby Gustafson has always been a big inspiration for me. Solid rhythm and soloid lead player, and he looked so cool doing it. Thanks for the awesome video
One of the best old school metal albums I ever heard! Thanks!
So awesome seeing how full your room is now and how far you've came. I'm glad to have lived in the same time period as you an get to learn from you. It's a joy and something i look forward to.🤘 keep shredding man
cheers, mate! As always, such an unique moment to wake up and check out your reviews! Thanks a lot for sharing your videos!
Man, your videos are awesome and I love the way you can dial in such excellent guitar tones from the cream of the crop metal bands from yesterday. These videos are pure tonal joy! Thank you!!!!
I believe I’ve read an interview with Bobby somewhere where he said he multitracked 4 guitars on TYOD.
I appreciate the album more in my older years, though still other albums before and after rank higher for me.
Great video, killer crunch 👍🏻
Great vid as usual man! Years is a definite "thrasterpiece"! As you mentioned, Bobby G is a monster on this record. Imo was a massive step up from their previous releases. Every riff and solo are just incredible as is his tone. I Thought you got really close to his tone, without just scooping the mids lol, kudos! As a whole I think a big part of the mix that makes it so crushing is DD's bass "clank" tone is high in the mix and the periods of isolated bass parts are excellent. Great stuff and nice playing. What's your fav track? Mine is skullkrusher, an absolute crusher and one of the heaviest riffs ever recorded! Also the solo on E.N.D. is one of his best! Anyways so for the long comments but really love Overkill! Been a massive fan since 88!
Hey man, you always give great ideas for recreating tones. But one thing you taught me today was putting my looper to good use(and getting the dust off it) by playing a riff or a piece of music and then looping it to start tweaking the pedals and eq. Brilliant!!!
Fuckin' awesome! I love that album and also Under The Influence!
Cheers from Portugal 🍺🤘🇵🇹
Awesome, Bobby was on fire, best album imho. Great way of explaining the relationship between pushing the front of the amp and EQing the power section. Very much like what happens in the studio going thru a board and bunch of outboard gear.
My friends and I lived and breathed this record. Overkill was my very first metal concert experience. We met Bobby Blitz outside as we were walking in, totally cool. The mosh pit was like getting thrown in a cement mixer, kind of glad I got out of there alive! Anacrusis opened, another great band (boost 800Hz before distortion and cut everything else to get that articulate quack tone)
I got that album when it came out and it is one of the greatest mainly because of the excellent sound but mostly because the songs were all memorable.
You fucken beauty mate. I know I can't be the only but I literally asked for this the other week and you have delivered. Thanks so much ❤️
ELIMINATION love the guys and the tone
I'll never forget hearing Taking Over for the first time. The tone on that album especially on In Union we Stand, Use Your Head, and the slower section of Powersurge is awesome.
Thanks for uploading this mate, brings back memories. First saw the film clip for 'Hello From The Gutter' on Rage when they used to have metal night in the wee hours of the mornings on the weekends. Good to see Bobby doing his best James Hetfield impersonation on that film clip, including Explorer Guitar, Black clothing, oversized sweat band🤘🏻🤘🏻. Glad he had his own tone and style though and great leads. Great East Coast Thrash. Loved all their albums. Cheers Mate
My favorite Overkill album. Awesome songs, excellent Terry Date production and mix, the whole band was on fire. Great job as always getting these tones so close!
Nice playing and killer sound brother!! Like 39🎸🎸
This video is really cool.
You got exactly the same tone, well done.
Please do some more Overkill stuff. Thanks for keeping us alive with your great tone catchings. 🎸🤘
One guitar tone I've always loved is on Destruction - Eternal Devastation. Not traditionally "good" tone but it cuts like a buzzsaw.
Fantastic video. Thank you for posting this. I didn't go through all the comments, but a correction on the year of the albums release. It was not 1999 it was 1989. But this is a fantastic video, and it seems that you have nailed Bobby's tone.
Bobby was a badass guitar player Great album great show man i just found it and subscribed
epic tone
Glad to see you using the JCM800 again 🤘
Yeah!!!!! Evil Never Dies🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
For me Overkills finest record. How heavy were the riffs in Skullcrusher Lamb?!
Never a doubt I'd love the video. Killer as usual. Still probably my favorite Overkill album of all time. Overkill has put out a lot of albums, most of them good, but this one was great. Nice playing as always Lamb and I'm still looking at alternatives to that EQFH.
The greatest thrash band of all time and this is my favourite
I must think overkill for introducing me to the Moshpit. They came out, playing shred and I lost my mind.
I've been waiting sooooo long for this! Great vid! Crushing tone. Another Overkill tone I really like is the tone from the From the Underground and Below record which was mixed by Colin Richardson. That album is very overlooked and heavy as fuck! Overkill have never released a bad album.
Yes Glad you did this one this is their best album in my opinion and the tone was very cool good job good choice. We have the same taste in music so I am not the only dork out here
Sweet man!! Been wantin some overkill for a while. You should do a video on the takin over album.
Glad you’ve touched on overkill!
I’m still trying to figure out the guitar tone of their Horrorscope album and can’t find what gear they used. Any tips anyone might have would be greatly appreciated!
@@jamescaldwell982 where did you find that? I must’ve been looking in all the wrong places
F*cking nailed it mate!
Was waiting for you to do an overkill album! 😀👍👍
This album is effing EPIC, great tone
Edit: Took me way too long to notice Mr Bird
Overkill
Wow that's cool!
I was hoping you'd do this with the Marshall DSL ... :(
thank you though once again for putting in the time, effort and dedication
we are all grateful for the fact that you are helping so many people with your knolwdge of amps, settings and effects
bless up
Well thanks mate, I did try with the DSL but I couldn’t get it right
Cool tones
Any chance Of a KREATOR - Extreme Aggression tone??? One of my fav thrash albums of all time. Cheers Mate
Nice video like always!
Hopefully you get a change to grab a Silver Jubilee 20w. I like it more than my Jcm800 20w!
My first concert was then on this album. I was 12 and before this night I listened to Ozzy, Maiden and hair metal. I was a different person after that night when it comes to musical taste
Very impressive!
Can do pls do Fear Factory Demanufacture tone?
for some reason, when listening to elimination, the guitar tone (to my ears) legit sounds like Master Of Puppets' guitar tone. What is cool is the one time James Hetfield played with Overkill live on stage with Bobby Gustafson's explorer that looked like his So What/More Beer explorer.
Thank you for this!
Great work. Can you make this as part of your Katana tones as well?
Its like 98% there. i think something to smooth the bite of the marshall would help. Maybe pulling back on the Tone kmob on the drive and compensating by pushing more volume.
excellent!
Bello/Magnifico.☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️😮
When that album came out I was so into it I got a license plate that said YRSOFDK (Virginia gets 7 letters).
Guitar wasn't tuned to E on this album. If memory serves it was C sharp or somewhere close to it.
Way too much good 🤘
Recently found your channel. Great content and you're a great player. What is that amp under the JCM800, is that a DSL? Have you ever connected them in stereo?
Hey thanks mate, it’s funny you ask. I’m just working a way to to exactly that but I want to offset one of the amps to lead/lag so it sounds like two recordings.
I would love to see someone try and recreate the Beneath The Remains guitar tone
If you work that out you’ve got Exhorder’s Slaughter too. They used the same gear apparently.
It’s a blend of 2c+ and jcm800
🔥
Can I suggest Artillery's - "Terror Squad" tone? It's super gnarly and crunchy and I'd be interested to hear how it could be replicated.
can you get one of your birds to perch on the headstock?
I know you specialize in guitar tones but have you tried recreating dd vernie’s tone. Him being the god father of the “clank”
Mr chopper. Could you have a listen Mercenary Aggression byt Demolition hammer. Its objectively not thar good. But something about it is really good. To me if feels like trying to drink a very thick milkshake through a small straw
Can you PLEASEEEEE do a video of how to get a alice in chains facelift/dirt tone on the dsl20
Kreator’s Extreme Aggression also has a great ripping guitar tone
Just saw your post, I requested it too. Love that album, Mille shredded like hell.
its emgs a gibson exploxer a marshall jcm800
Overkill should replace anthrax in the big four
Guitar is in E standard, amp settings are pre-gain 7 low 9 mid .5 high 8 post-gain 10 \m/
🙂🙂🙂🙂😀
Maxed bass on the amp is never ideal for a tight chugging tone, even with Marshalls, even if you're cutting them with the sd1 and the eq; it's simply too loose in the preamp gain stage to begin with.
Obviously heavily influenced by JH at the time.
I’m a big overkill fan and I bought years of decay the day it came out. I was a senior in high school.
I popped that cassette into my Toyota pick up and I couldn’t believe how horrible it sounded. I still hate the way this record sounds to this day. I love the songs and I love the album as a whole. But it sounds like a wet blanket was thrown over the speaker cabinets.
You always nail tone, but I think this one was just a little off to my ears. It's too raw. YOD had a very, I don't even know the word, almost mid tone smooth laser sound, the highs didn't bite like this. It's similar to Forbidden on twisted into form. It's like they threw cheesecloth over the sound to muffle something, I can't explain it.
Thanks man, EMG-81 did that but they also lost a little clarity on other riffs so I decided on the Duncan’s. It’s a harder tone than I thought. Totally the wrong gear
Very important to mention Dee Dee 's absolutely incredible bass tone also.
