This lecture is so magnificent that it is both a good introduction and still worth studying on an advanced level.

A good book and worth the hour or two in my humble opinion even if Sartre isn’t your favourite existentialist. Great work Paul, thank you.

Thanks for putting this together! Heidegger's Letter on Humanism is, of course, a response to Sartre. Heidegger thought Sartre's "existentialism" was not very good. My What Is Existentialism? book explains what I think is still salvageable from Sartre. Cheers!

There is a readers guide by Joseph Catalano for Being and Nothingness that really explains Sartre's calculus in a clear way.

People who needs to be cajoled to have them read a book have a decision to make: Is this how you want to be? Is this how you'd have us be?

But purpose, decisions, and responsibility are not God's doing by the doctrine of Christianity. It is your doing to discover your own purpose. And to take responsibility for your own actions. That is why you are given free will. There is no contradiction in philosophies there. Living rightly as an example to other humans to follow is also consistent with the Christian doctrine. I think where they differ is that Sartre believes that the universe comes into existence before its essence or purpose can be gleaned. And its existence just is and always was. Existence precedes essence. In the Christian doctrine, there is a creator that divines the universe and organizes it to allow for conscience imbued with observational data to derive its essence. And the Christian doctrine says that there is a spiritual realm beyond that which we can directly observe. An existentialist does not believe in any other realm beyond that which is directly observable.
