I first heard that song the day I went to get my driver’s permit. I was turned away because of my disability. On the way home, with me in tears, “Don’t Cry Out Loud” by Melissa Manchester, followed immediately by “Cry for Help” by Rick Astley came on the radio, one after the other. My dad looks at me, gives me a hug, and says, “Well, that makes it hard to know what to do, huh?” I laughed and cried at the same time.
That reminds me of the time I heard Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" after Boyz II Men's "On Bended Knee" on the radio. The DJ must've done that on purpose. lol
Rick Astley is not given the praise he deserves. Everybody know "Never Gonna Give You Up" but his library his awesome. Im glad that he is now getting back on scene and the youth of today are appreciating him .... ❤❤
There was a song from Joey McIntyre called 'Stay The Same" that had a similar vibe, and also ended with some church. It was 1999, so Jay and Amber may be old enough to vaguely remember it.
And he never, ever, felt fake to me either. Always a very, genuine guy. And seems to still be, to this day. He really should have had a much, much, greater career. He really should have. My Best. Out.
Rick is an old soul, he’s born same month and year as myself. I grew up listening to Rick as his height 1987. His voice is so rich and mature. Agree with everything you have said love this version with choir amazing
This single was Rick's transition from the 80s to the 90s. While "Cry for Help" was a top ten hit, Rick largely disappeared for twenty years. Pop music can be cruel. What a vocalist!
Cruel! Brutally savage does not even, properly, describe it. How many promising and exceptional careers were ruined once pop turned bloody, rap and hip-hop. Now, I have no words any longer, for how insanely, low modern, current, pop has sunk in the past nearly, 30 odd, years. I've been railing about it for nearly that long. Rick is a shinning, SUPER STAR, compared to most of the gutter trash of today. Such a sad, utterly, iffed up, world we live in. It really is. Glad to know he's still, performing and drawing crowds though. God Bless Him. My Best. Out.
He chose to drop out of the music business to live a normal life with his family. He made a successful comeback about a decade ago. He hasn't had radio hits, but he's still out there performing and has had a few new releases that are quite good.
@@davedave8602 : Because sadly, if it is not the hip-hop crap of today, the mainstream radio stations won't play it. This is something I bitch about endlessly, regarding the insane, variety of pop music we had in the 80s, 70s and 80s as well, which today, no one seems to want to bother with, and it baffles and infuriates me to no end, because if you happen to NOT, be into rap and hip-hop you have nothing, current, to listen to, unless you hunt around for it insanely, and that simply, is not how it should be. Correct? My Best. Out.
I remember when I first heard this...I thought "this is Rick Astley???" After all those uptempo dance hits....this was quite a change! And, when the choir came in....I got goosebumps. And I just did again while I was watching it. Thanks for listening to it Jay and Amber!
The brilliant Andraé Crouch Choir, the Disciples provided backing vocals, such a great song. They were also on tracks with Madonna and Michael Jackson. I'm glad to see Rick still being found and enjoyed for his music and not just an internet meme, truly a great singer.
This song, and "She wants to dance with Me" are my favorite songs from him. You should also check out another slow jam from Mr. Astley: "It would take a strong, strong Man." My mother loved that one when I was a kid.
You know, for those of us who lived through these times, whenever I hear something like this, it feels so, insanely, strange. I cannot speak for your mom but I know for myself, I am still, at the age I was then on the inside. I'm not one of the grannies but one of the youth still, on the inside. So when I read something like; my mom liked, for someone who was big when I was young, it feels so strange, indeed. New became old so damn, fast. Too damn, fast. My Best. Out.
Amber you crackin me up with "okay brother Rick" 😂😂 'Brother Rick' is right! Beautiful reaction guys, I love it as much as I love this song with a passion! ❤❤❤❤❤ Greetings here from Trinidad 😊
they thought about it with “never gonna give you up”, but it wasn't until “ain't too proud to beg” that they let him in. this song? they let him stay 🤍
He is still performing and writing music. You should check his original song titled "Try" which he performed with the London Philharmonic. If you get the opportunity to see him live please do so. A few years ago he accepted a challenge from Choir Choir in Toronto to appear. He accepted the challenge and sang "Never Gonna Give You Up" with their group accapella. He has an extensive catalogue of music to sample.
As a "forgotten man of pop", this was a wake up call to recognise and appreciate a great vocalist of any era. Similarly, another vocalist who drifted away from the "mainstream" was Joe Cocker. He crashed on to the scene with "A litte help from my friends in the late 60s and teamed up with Jennifer Warnes in the 80s with "Up where we belong" but my lasting final impression was a powerful song called "Fire It Up" in 2012 just 2 years before his death. Check it out - you won't be disappointed.
Omg I'm so glad you finally reacted to this!! I suggested it a few times in the past. Rick's voice is amazing and in this just shows it off even more! The Choir that comes in later just lifts him up so wonderfully in this. And gosh, love Rick's longer fluffy hairstyle vibe too.😁 I knew once the Choir came in and backed RA up, y'all would get your minds blown lol!❤😊
This is hands down my fav rick astley song. A fantastic use of his amazingly strong and sweet voice with a fantastic message. As well as being a musically beautiful composition. The end is so satisfying. Thanks for sharing this wonderful song
Excellent! Thank you 2 for enabling me to hear music that is new to me and older music that I forgot about! I go to my VA for music therapy once a week and you help by giving me new and old favorite songs to share and talk about. God bless you! I cried for help 22 years ago! John 3:16, Romans 10:9-13, John 1:12.
By far, his best song. Stepping out from behind the bubble-gum pop world and showing his true talent. Blue-eyed soul at its very best! And such a powerful message of being there for someone who needs a shoulder...10 out of 10.
The was his breakout hit he wrote after he left the Stock Aitken and Waterman production team that produced all his previous hits . Hes now a national treasure in the Uk. A double appearance at the Glastonbury festival last year followed by a joint set with a band called the Blossoms at Glastonbury covering Smiths songs , a full set done on the BBC on New Years Eve to see in the new year and hes just completed a sell out tour. Ive posted a live version of this song he performed in my home town Glasgow in february. He released a new album of his songs last year.
One of my favorites by Rick. It marked a transition in his sound, which was dance-pop. This one truly showcases his vocal abilities /range. We see it in his signature dance tunes, but this one truly allows him to shine. Great singer.
This is a powerful and moving song, not a typical upbeat song, serious in message. His voice resonates with emotion and compassion. The gospel back up singers are awesome. A big hit in 1991
Absolute best Rick Astley song ever! Thank you so much Jay and Amber for listening to it. I absolutely adore this tune. If you were looking for another great Rick Astley tune, consider listening to Take Me To Your Heart.
"Never gonna give, never gonna give!" Rick is a great singer. Nice suggestion. Patreon Movie Suggestions: Islands In The Stream, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, The Italian Job (2003), It Could Happen To You, It's Complicated, It's My Party, It's My Turn, ivansxtc, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, Jack.
Was waiting for the gospel singers to come in and shock you and it was worth the wait!!! Have you done his song Hold Me In Your Arms yet? Can't remember, another slower one, but still shows off his amazing voice and i think you'd love it!!! I think back to these days and think this was just music the whole family could enjoy, it reminds me of my nan, maybe because when as kids we saw her this was just so wholesome and uplifting it starts with you, RIP nan, still in my thoughts and my heart!!! Just wanted to add this.
Rick Astley can turn his vocals into any genre, he rocked Glastonbury last year singing with all kinds of artists and I was blown away to know he started as a drummer. I am a sucker for a great ballad and this one is up there, veering away from the Stock, Atiken, Waterhouse catching, bouncy offerings this shows how versatile Rick is
Jay and Amber, thanks for reacting to that Rick Astley song I knew you would like it. If I may suggest another one "You'll new know" by Hi Gloss (new artist alert) in particular I think Jay will enjoy the Funky Bass on this slow 80s groove song. 😊
Rick had a big hit with his version of "When I Fall in Love" which showed off his distinctive voice. You may recall loving another UK unique and surprising voice from the 80s with Roland Gift from The Fine Young Cannibals when you checked out "She Drives Me Crazy". It's amongst your most viewed videos with 311k plays. They did a great version of "Suspicious Minds" or you could check their US number 1 "Good Thing". It's been a while since you checked them out as Jay was still recovering from "Rock Lobster" at the time lol!
My favorite song of his! It was co-written by Rob Fisher of the early 80’s band “Naked Eyes”! They had two popular songs on MTV back then, “Always Something There to Remind Me” and “Promises Promises”. I think y’all would enjoy both if you haven’t already. Mr. Fisher was also half of the band Climie Fisher in the late 80’s and they had a song called “Love Changes Everything” that was popular then.
This the long haired phase of Rick Astley. Getting out of his clean cut boyish image but still with the powerful voice. Rick Astley is an underrated singer and often joked about because of his Never Gonna Give You Up song and meme but the guy can sing. He’s had many hits that get little notice in my book because people focus on The Never Gonna Give You Up song. This song and hopelessly are excellent. His cover of Nat King Cole’s When I Fall in Love is awesome too.
There's a video on TH-cam of Foo Fighters in concert and Rick Astley joins them on stage to sing one of his hits from the 80s, it's really cool to see them honor him in that way.
Rick has said in interviews that he grew up loving Soul music. That’s really the sort of thing he wanted to do more than the pop stuff which was just the trend of the times.
If I remember correctly, this song, from the album "Free", was his attempt to step away from the Stock-Aitken-Waterman songs he had performed until then, getting tired of dance-pop and aiming towards more heartfelt soul. Sadly, the album didn't hit the heights of his previous hits, leading to his fading into obscurity until his recent, most welcome, renaissance. You should hear him with the Foo Fighters! Now THERE'S a team-up!
I agree with you that the women's choir is a perfect addition to this song and Rick Astley's soulful voice. A song with a message. I love it. Apparently the universe knew that because I happened to hear Elton John's "Border Song" today. 😊
I love your channel and have watched your musical tastes expand on the journey . Personally, I am a lover of the blues. Both traditional and electric. I am so happy that you enjoy it too. Your 'Female Friday' is a wonderful idea and as a blues lover may I suggest a new weekly addition for Tuesdays, "BLUESDAY TUESDAY". Keep the music alive guys and thanks for your entertaining shows. From an Australian fan. 🤟
Terribly, terribly, underrated performer. I'm not sure there is a song out there, that Rick put out, that I do not like. Sadly, I can be sure that if it is someone I like, they won't be liked by much of the world, as I always, seem out of step with the taste of the majority. Man, that hair. Good Lord, that hair. If only I had even, half of that today. If only. Rock On Rick, this one guy will ALWAYS, be a fan till the day I die. My Best. Out. PS: Guys, this is my youth. Rick and myself are close to the same age I think. I get so emotional when I see you guys REALLY, get into what was popular when I, was young. It feels VERY, validating. Thank You SO, SO, MUCH!
Jay and Amber I am overjoyed you have discovered this incredible song. No matter when I hear this it brings me such joy. Please check out another fabulous in the same vain from British band Living In A Box with the mega soulful " Room In Your Heart ". Amazing track.
Rick Astley has a lot of really good songs including just in the last few years. Last year's album went to #1 in the UK. His soulful voice has only gotten better. Some of my favorites of his newer music are "Keep Singing", "Take Me Back To Your Place", "Try", "Coming Home Tonight", "Never Gonna Stop", "Angels On My Side"
The amount of music you two go through is amazing. So much so it makes me wonder how anyone suggests a song you haven't already done! Still, I'll risk it with the suggestion of a one hit wonder from 1968: Bottle of Wine by The Fireballs. It's short and fun.
Hiya Jay and Amber, This is one of my favourite Rick Astley songs ever, Rick Co wrote this song with Rob Fisher, Climie/Fisher, had a hit in 1988 with Love changes everything, could you react to Eighth Wonder hit called I'm Not Scared, that would be good for female Friday, this is Choppy
I NEVER ask for a request but this one is A MUST could you react to Céline Dion singing in the opening cérémonie of the olympic in Paris its been 4 years that she didn't sang for the world 🌎 live please please react to this performance to pay an hommage to that exceptional woman who went through SO much these couples of years ❤ thanks in advance for reacting to her exceptionnal performance
I know this song but I never listened to it anymore, also because at a certain moment I've never heard it on the radio anymore but this is indeed a very good song. Thank you for your reaction, Jay and Amber❤❤
The opening of this song has always reminded me of It Might Be You by Stephen Bishop, Valley Road by Bruce Hornsby and Waiting For You by Richard Marx. Strange, yes, but they all hit my ear in similar ways.
That is by far his best offering! Rick is a top notch vocalist!
I first heard that song the day I went to get my driver’s permit. I was turned away because of my disability. The really funny thing about Rick Astley is that he really is no joke. ✌️
And he never, ever, felt fake to me either. Always a very, genuine guy. And seems to still be, to this day. He really should have had a much, much, greater career. He really should have. My Best. Out.
On his latest albums, from 50 on, he plays all of the instruments. He records his way. No more corporate studios, corporate dictates.
Rick is an old soul, he’s born same month and year as myself. I grew up listening to Rick as his height 1987. His voice is so rich and mature. Agree with everything you have said love this version with choir amazing
So happy you did this song! His best
My favorite Rick Astley song! Such a beautiful voice, then add in the choir towards the end...heaven.

definitely Rick's best.
when that choir enters an amazing song turns into an spectacular one

The delicate piano playing makes this track for me, along with Rick's superb vocals....... this is one of Rick's finest tracks.
That’s the Andre Crouch Choir. They are also on Madonnas Like A Prayer with that same awesome woman belting out.

Rick's voice is in my life's soundtrack.
Realize the diversity of the bands back then, it was never a thing.

Jay and Amber I am overjoyed you have discovered this incredible song. No matter when I hear this it brings me such joy. Please check out another fabulous in the same vain from British band Living In A Box with the mega soulful " Room In Your Heart ". Amazing track.
I forgot about this beautiful song. 💜🙏😢
Love love Rick! Please listen to Angels on My Side. You'll love the video, it's campy and cute.
Love rick, still going strong! Hold me in your arms and his version of when i fall in love are beautiful ❤
My absolute favorite Ricky A. song. I can listen to this everyday.
The amount of music you two go through is amazing. So much so it makes me wonder how anyone suggests a song you haven't already done! Still, I'll risk it with the suggestion of a one hit wonder from 1968: Bottle of Wine by The Fireballs. It's short and fun.
Beautiful guys!Thank you for this one! Awesome!
This is a hallmark early 1990’s song. Takes me back to great days 😊
Wonderful song, thanks fordoing this. Have a listen to his album 50, after his age at the time, itsgreat.
Yay! Y'all are always reacting to my favorite songs and groups. 😊
Kid can sing!
"Hold me in your arms" is a good song of his
I love this voice! Rick Astley is an amazing singer and songwriter! ❤
So many great Rick songs - "Keep Singing", and "Angels on My side", are two of his best songs
I love the video for "Angels on My Side"! 😊
It Would Take A Strong Strong Man. A good one.
I LOVE this song! Thanks for the reaction! Love you guys! 💕
There are perfect musical pieces in this world. This is one of them. Rick Astley has never sounded better.
Awesome song and great reaction guys!
Great track. Another one for future review please is Rick Astley - Sleeping - banging tune !
My favourite Rick Astley song.
What a spectacular piece ... Rick has an incredible voice. But when the beautiful girls join him the song JUST EXPLODES with emotion. GREAT STUFF
Great voice just like Mick Hucknall
I know this song but I never listened to it anymore, also because at a certain moment I've never heard it on the radio anymore but this is indeed a very good song. Thank you for your reaction, Jay and Amber❤❤
The opening of this song has always reminded me of It Might Be You by Stephen Bishop, Valley Road by Bruce Hornsby and Waiting For You by Richard Marx. Strange, yes, but they all hit my ear in similar ways.
