    As the other guy mentioned, second gear is better for popping the clutch because its a closer match between your road speed and engine speed while hopefully having enough momentum to turn the engine and alternator over so it produces enough spark and compression the engine needs to run. If the engine is in first gear, the gear normally used at a complete stop, the engine will have to turn faster, probably around 5,000 to match the minimum speed which your inertia will turn the engine over. Second will let you still do 10-15 mph but it will only turn the engine around 3,700 and wont lock the rear wheel when the engine, spinning at 0 rpm is connected to the wheels and transmission which is moving at 3700 rpm, the clutch helps match the two and allows the bikes alternator and engine to turn and start. Also the starter button is not required, but have the bikes key in the on position. Hope this helps!
    TLDR: Use first when completely stopped, use second when moving.

    just going to post this to help others like myself looking for help starting their bike.
    1) Find a hill and be at the top of it
    2) check your kill switch, turn your key to on, open the choke for those of us with them
    3) put the bike in 2nd gear, hold in clutch.
    4)start to roll down the hill popping off the clutch and giving gas at the same time. you can do this as many times as you want until you come to a stop.
    if these steps fail to start your bike you may need to phone someone to come out and charge your battery.
    * jump leads can be used car to bike but only if the car is turned off or else you run the risk of blowing your battery*

    Glad you got it started my friend. When I bought my motorcycle two weeks ago first thing I invested in was one of those small jump start boxes. Fits in your tank bag or backpack. Well worth the money.

    The battery on my 2016 ninja 300 was dead cause I had not started it in about 2 weeks and the weather turned cold. I tried this and I got it started after 3 attempts. Thanks for the video.

    • @Malkom1366
      @Malkom1366  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's actually abnormal. Your bike should not have a dead battery after sitting for two weeks even if the weather is poor. Check for a short or something. But I'm glad the video helped.

    I don't know what's worse-
    Having a dead bike,
    Or thinking you have a dead bike only to find you left it on first gear with the kickstand down... 🙃🤦‍♂️

    You should put it in 2nd gear and push then release the clutch and when it starts you should hold the clutch again and use both front and rear breaks that would be more safer and control it better . that what I know .

    • @pfistor
      @pfistor 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It won't go into 2nd gear from a stationary position. It won't shift past N from stopped. It's a "feature" of the 300 to make it easier to get to neutral from stopped but I guess it would also prevent you from bump starting from 2nd.

    • @isaksrensen6736

    • @pfistor

      @@isaksrensen6736 Glad to help lol. The 300 was a good bike for me. Traded it in for an aprilia Tuono 660 after a few years. I will say one other issue with the 300 is at least mine and a lot of others online have an inherent wobble if you release the front bars the bars would just automatically start oscillating like the start of a death wobble. Something about the factory head bearings so would be careful going no hands heh. And the aftermarket gear indicator only read right when the clutch was fully out. The Tuono had none of those issues at least. Be safe out there.

    Don't know if you were taught to use the kill switch all the time, but I find killing the engine by simply turning the key off is better, especially if you're parking in a certain area where you don't want ANY chance of leaving your key in it. A good routine is "key off, lock, out," all in one swift motion. Kill switch should be for emergencies, contrary to the beliefs of the MSF Course. Pretty sure they only teach that so a new rider doesn't let go of the clutch while it's still in gear when reaching for a key and have the bike lurch out of their grasp.

    well i start it on second gear(always) and i push it on flat surrface then jump on it and start it becouse my bike is lighter and i need to be on it so the back tire can get grip

    Right now I’m having troubles with my 2011 Ninja 250r. Took it for a ride, Parked it in a parking lot , put the kick stand down and all of a sudden everything turned off on the bike. No dashboard lights, no nothing. Yes it was in neutral, the green dashboard light lit up before it all of a sudden died. I was with my boyfriend and somehow he got it running while I was trying to find a phone somewhere.
    He got it running, I got it in 1st , ready to take off out of the parking lot and then it stalls and all the electricity turned off again. Don’t know if it’s a battery, loose connector, clutch cable problem, etc.
    Any ideas ?

    after you build momentum, you let go of the clutch completely and then hit start button? or do you ease off clutch and hit start button?

      sg53000 I was just talking to a coworker about that the other day and he suggested the same thing. If I ever find myself in that unfortunate position again I'll give that a try. I don't suppose the displacement of the bike might influence the amount of strain?

  • @ericz562

    First. Never shut off your bike with the kill switch always use the key. Kill switch are for emergency only when you have no time to reach for the keys that is the reason why it is so easy to operate, so big and red, and so close to the throttle hand.
    Second. Always start your bike on 2nd Gear, First gear took to much momentum away from your running start.
    Third. It would really help if you unload your gear and your bag first before attempting to push start a bike, less weight, and you wouldn't die from heat stroke from pushing your bike with all your gear on.
    Other than that "GOOD JOB!"

    • @hyperx72
      @hyperx72 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know I'm late to the party but that's kind've bad advice, there are many times where using the killswitch is better.
      You just have to get into a habit of taking out the key too, which I do by step-by-step going
      Killswitch
      Kickstand down
      Handlebars left
      Key to lock
      Key out.

    So my battery is dead, pretty sure of it, if I manage to push start her up and get her running will I still need to change the battery or will it charge up from the usage, as stupid as that may sound 😅

    • @Malkom1366
      @Malkom1366  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nas Rahman if it's just dead, then push starting will help you recharge it as long as you keep riding it for half an hour to an hour after. If there's something wrong with the battery and it will not hold a charge, then you can push start to get you going and ride it to a shop or something, but a new battery will definitely be needed.

    Not sposed to push it in gear your sposed to push it in neutral and bang it into first, as soon as you get it into gear it should start

  • @plankshield
    @plankshield 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You shouldn't have to hit the start button at all.. just have key on and in gear. Your momentum does the starters job for it.. With out power the button does nothing:) Ride safe!

    • @xorbe2
      @xorbe2 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In fact, hitting the starter button may sag the remaining electrical system entirely, and prohibit the bike from bump starting.

    • @Malkom1366
      @Malkom1366  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      xorbe2 Land of Rath
      Thanks for the correction, guys. In this case, it seems to have worked okay. I guess being in motion generated enough juice to allow the starter to assist in turning the engine over, but if I'm ever unfortunate enough to have to do it again, I'll try it without the button.

    • @plankshield
      @plankshield 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      yep the whole reason to push start in gear is the momentum of the motor when it engages in gear does what the starter does. Your starter might be able to turn only because the motor is but it wont have the torque needed to help. Better to just leave it alone. Same in a car.. you turn the key to on and just pop the clutch in motion. It only charges when its running.

    lol you need to learn how to push start a motorcycle....a) you waste SO MUCH hill coasting...you can start your bike going walking speed...you could have had 3 or 4 attempts each time you went down your little hill. b) always push start in 2nd gear. Lesson learned.

    • @larabie2007

      larabie2007 Good points. On this particular bike, the ninja 300 or kawasaki's with true neutral, can't go to 2nd gear once its gear has already been positioned to 1st gear.
