How to Use an Extruder with Soap Dough

- Come learn how to use an extruder with soap dough! This short cold process soap tutorial will teach you how to use soap dough and an extruder tool. There are so many soap dough techniques out there and one of my favorite is using an extruder to create fun shapes to embed in my cold process soaps. The extruder discs that come with your extruder have a standard set of shapes (like a circle, square, tear drop).

There are two standard extruder sizes/brands.
1. The Makin Brand uses an 18 mm disc size. There is an extension piece (called the Walnut Hallow Adaptor) you can by that uses a 24 mm disc size.
2. The Fimo Brand uses a 23 mm disc size.

MP won't work for soap dough.
Thank you for show this process. I’ve used only embeds so far and the molds get expensive and limited to what I can afford and find. I believe an extruder is in my very near future 😊

do you have any tips on how solid the soap dough should be? And how do you stop it curling,? .. because I’ve had it brake on me when I tried to straighten it. Thanks in advance
Once I get it going (about an inch to inch and a half is out) I can then usually start to straighten it out and extrude the length with it coming out straight. I will also generally hold it vertical so the gravity of the soap hanging down as it comes out helps keep it straight.
If you can't straighten it without it breaking my first thing to check would be the consistency of your soap dough. Breaking generally means it's to dry or just too hard/not flexible.
Second I'd make sure that it's well conditioned and rolled together with no gaps or spaces when you are putting it into the tube. The better the soap is compacted to start the better it's going to extrude. I will also hold my finger over the disc so that no soap can extruder until I feel even pressure telling me all the soap has been pushed down when I first start cranking the handle. Hope that helps!

Great video-- Does it matter if the extruder is aluminum or not? I'm afraid I might get DOS on the soap dough part!
I’ve never had an issue. The bigger work with soap dough and DOS is the water content of the soap I think. You’re not going to be leaving the soap in the extruder so it shouldn’t be a problem.

They should make it so u can just push it instead of cranking..
There is one small one like that but it doesn’t work well and I think they’ve stopped making it. Soap doesn’t have the right consistency for it to work well. The 57mm extruders use that method and you have to be very careful when extruding to not break the extruder.
Do you make your own soap dough or buy it prepare?
I make my own. There are a couple free recipes out there (Lovin' Soap and Star Crossed Soapery) and Bee from Sorcery Soap also has books/recipes you can buy. It's cheaper in the long run to make my own and since I use it soooo much it was worth learning how to do!
