  • Sleeping well in the back country is paramount. Exped has a great balance of comfort to size/weight that no other company can compare. The sacrifice is durability, Iv gone through several models and de-lamination over heavy use during several seasons.

I also use a real thin foam pad cut in half so we have 1 each...we keep the pad underneath the air mat to give extra protection from rough ground, thorns etc and a bit of extra warmth in winter months. Great for kneeling on and sorting kit etc afterwards,

The Exped schnozzle pump bag is a fabulous product reducing breath moisture and inflates in about 5 pumps and i have the Long Wide version. My wife has the LW ultralight version too.

I bought one of these (SynMat 7LW) to put in my AMOK D3.0 but with an integrated pump, because I can never find a pad that doesn't stop me from bottoming out on the Earth. See, Im fat. Im 5'9" and weight 256 so finding a sleep pad that keeps me off the Earth is difficult. HOWEVER, I bought this, inflated it and I didn't bottom out. My hip nor my shoulder touched the Earth when I was on my side. On my back, still no bottoming out. I am glad I got this sleep pad. It took about 5 minutes to inflate and I felt like I was preforming CPR (integrated pump) but, as out of shape as I am, this was not an issue.

Took mine out for the first time this weekend. Amazing comfort! light weight! I used the shnozal combined with down jacket and poly cotton pillow slip to make a great pillow! Best nights sleep ever in 20 years of camping! worth the money!

Its actually the fill valve you opened. The other (deflate) valve has a rubber dongle you shove in to let the 1 way valve empty. I'm just being a smart ass ... sorry. Thanks for sharing!

I love the packed size, I just wish I could use it. I gave up on air mats because my state is needle infested. I would puncture every single time I was out. It looks incredibly comfortable!

Timely review man, I've have a 20x72 NeoAir that I don't sleep very well on and I've recently been looking at this Exped pad. I have a couple of their pillows and I highly recommend the pillow pump model with the foam inside.

You nailed my concern... Us guys who wear 50 long sports jackets tend to not fit the outdoors comfort products... But we do clear the way for the little fellas on the grid iron.

The Snozzle Pump Bag is a cool idea. I have the size S synmat UL, which fits me well, and I love to sleep on it. Comfortable and warm. But it really doesn't hold much, I used it on the clean kitchen floor when visiting friends for some nights and had my first hole. From now on I think I will carry it in a protective trash bag. and if it has another hole one day, it can stay there ;-) what fails me in the kitchen is not ready for the field. I will have to try something different in future.

I always worry about air loss...
I've been using my Therma-Rest.. uh.. pro I think and it's been great. I admit to being a picky sleeper too.. I have to comfortable or I don't sleep for crap. I do sleep well using it.
    Great review.. thanks

I also have a Big Agnes pad that deflates in about 4 hours without holes. I read somewhere recently on the 'net that the problem is with the brass valve, so I'm going with that.

    Hibeast,
Thanks for the video, I think this is a wonderful idea, to quickly (without the restraints of having to keep it in shot for the video) blow up the bed. And as you say the ‘Snozzle’ can have many uses. To show you how much I know about the staying alive and comfortable bit of the outdoors, I thought this was a water bottle before you opened it, yes I know Duh me! ;-)
    Take care

Superb Pad beast and, a good review too. Darned 100% better than the so called updated pads I used on my last video which turned into a comedy LOL. The first one a so called self inflating pad, didn't self inflate and, the second pad with a so called built in pump didn't work either, I had to mouth inflate and, then it deflated during the night :( So I'm off to the outdoors shop later this week to find something better and not too expensive :) Thanks for sharing Beast...........Les.

This is a large wide model right? Standard models are only 20 inches wide, like your previous pad. I'm finding it tough to get a 30 inch wide mat that's not a complete waste of money, but I suppose this will do in a medium (72 inch length) size.

Would the condensation trapped in the pads also cause a mildew issue?

a little tip: just open the bag and blow in it while its open , that way you dont have to shake it :)

simezra the idea of that bag is to prevent condensation inside the sleeping mattress

I've always had problems with my Big Agnes pad deflating (or losing pressure) in the cool (not winter) evening to the degree that is useless. I'm aware that it has no holes because I set it in morning sunlight and it fully inflates again with no leaks. I sleep in a hammock and I wonder if anyone else has this problem. I'm very frustrated and wonder if I'm doing something wrong.
