indeed they are very cautious and worried of being trapped, but of course who wouldn't find this odd.
If I suddenly found a steaming roast chicken sitting on a table on the sidewalk with a sign that said: "free just take it" regardless of how hungry I was I would think someone was trying to trick me too.

We have a mango tree in our yard. When the mangoes get ripe they fall to the ground ready to eat. I was in the house and saw a few fall so I looked around for a bag and went outside to pick them up and they were gone. I glanced down our yard and there goes two squirrels running down the fence with a whole yellow mango in their mouths, I wish I had my camera the mangoes were almost bigger than the little squirrels! I thought I would share how smart and comical they can be! 😂👍🏼

In Norway there's this little nursery song about a young squirrel, called "Nutbit Little".
    He's always late for school.
    Very cheeky, teasing miss Magpie.
    Half forgetting to have breakfast...
    Then munching two pine nuts.
Before hopping and racing through the forest.
Just making it to class on time.
(It might be inspired by Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit and friends).
Nameless squirrel could be an other Nutbit Little, I guess... 😉

Just like one of your other commenters suggested, it would be interesting to see the same experiment with shelled nuts.
At the start, your test group were keen on the almonds & the pecans, the two that are probably the most ergonomic to fit in their mouths quickly, thus they can grab & go more easily.
Later, once they’d determined the selection game wasn’t part of some trick by the Window Human, they became bold enough to take the time to get to grips with the walnut, whose shells have that lumpy/bumpy texture they can grip onto with their teeth more easily, but that they need time to manipulate to find the right spot & be comfortable.
In it’s shell, the hazelnut is a much more regular, relatively smooth surfaced sphere & probably a little big for them to comfortably get in their mouths quickly. It’s also the smallest nut inside, so maybe they see it as least return on their investment of time & effort to get in.
As ever though, your visitors are a joy to watch & their individual, unique & adorable personalities shine through. I wonder where the new, wannabe alpha from your last video was during your experiment though? But at least Jane was able to play without being harassed this time!

    Awesome experiment! 👏👍
I bet on walnut, but was not really sure as it's pretty big with its shell, and less manageable than the other three nuts. But its shell is easier to break than the other ones, and I *think* that the nut/shell ratio is probably the highest one (?) Also, walnuts have the best fatty acid profile amongst all nuts (including all the other kind of nuts, Brazil nuts, Macadamia, etc.)
Really, really interesting! Thank you! 👍😊
It would also be very interesting to see the exact same experiment, but with shelled nuts - in order to see if the size of the whole nut does influence the squirrels' choice, and if they chose otherwise in that different situation.
Funny to note that the hazelnut was never chosen 😅(as it's often presented as the squirrels' choice nut)

What a very cute idea to make this contest 😅❤ So interesting !! I’m surprised they didn’t take the hazelnut. They seemed more skittish than usual too, maybe they were overwhelmed with the choice ☺️♥️♥️♥️

Smart walnuts are the best. Omega-3 nut reduces. Inflammation mega 6 nuts increase inflammation.

we have squirrels in a big tree just outside our living room window. Now I know a little more about what nuts they like. I usually leave nuts that are already shelled though.

Mine like walnuts, peanuts, almonds, and pistachios. I heard we're not supposed to give them peanuts though.
I love how your video captures more squirrels running around on the ground!😃😍🐾🐾

Peanuts are good for squirrels, but it's best to feed them a mix of nuts.

I was wondering if maybe the shells have something to do with it too...the almond shape is easiest to grab, and the walnut shell, although it's big, has wrinkles where they can get a tooth-hold on it. The pecan and hazelnut shells are smooth so they're more challenging---which means squirrels must really like pecans because they manage to grab them anyway :)

Glad to see no cashews! It took awhile for the squirrels to train me, but I finally got the message. And Google backed it up. Having said THAT, I have one squirrel pal who really likes pistachios as well.

I love they all have names. How do you tell them apart?

    • @Squirrels_at_the_window
      @Squirrels_at_the_window  ปีที่แล้ว

Telling squirrels apart is like telling identical twins apart. The more time I spend with them the more I notice unique features and behaviors. I have a video about it if you would like to learn more about how I tell my squirrels apart: th-cam.com/video/dRPqzajs7WE/w-d-xo.html
