    I think the "problem"..."confusion"...whatever the word is, is that it's tiny little choices that DO add up! A scoop of peanut butter, a slice of avocado, it's not like "OMG you eat a whole pizza every meal!" it's like...not that drastic of changes that make differences. Also it takes the time it takes and everyone wants speedy rapid results. I fall into this trap too, where I'm like why is it taking MONTHS to lose weight, but it took months to gain weight. :) Great info! I appreciate your videos & the way you explain things.

      This tracks with my experience too. It took years for me to gain weight, I gained about 2 pounds a year over 20 years.... Even after gaining 40 pounds I was still a "healthy" weight according to my BMI and doctors. So now I'm losing about 1/2 a pound a month at a steady and totally doable rate. It's fine. I only want to lose about 15-25 pounds and I'm fine if it takes a few years. This is a sustainable lifestyle and it's filling and delicious. Honestly I think the #1 thing for me (after being whole food plant based) is eliminating the oil. I'm keeping nuts and avocados. Makes it more pleasurable for me although it is slower.

    Fascinating! I’m a 44 year old woman who was told that should eat 1400 calories a day to lose weight. I have found it almost impossible. Pretty much I can’t eat unless I workout and earn at least 400 calories back. What a terrible feeling. I don’t want to view my workouts that way or have such a discouraging view towards my general health.

      Key word: STRESSFULL
      Losing weight should not do this. We have enough to worry about to add on. Even if it takes me longer (less flab, btw) but the non-stress is what we should be looking for always. Did you know that stress causes a hormone that WONT let you loose weight? So there goes another factor. ✌

    Excellent video. For people who have been restricting for a long time and have reached a plateau, calorie deficit won't work. How low can you go right ? they need to up their calories for a while and refeed. It's called reverse dieting. Later they can try to implement a calorie deficit. It takes time, patience is key.

    Really enjoyed this video! Thank you, Chelsea!!! 💖 It helps so much to have someone reasonable talk about this. I think as you do, and it helps so much to hear it again from someone else. Thank you for your inspiration and help! 🥰 Together, I think we are getting through to my mind. 😂 I had a doctor look at me years ago and squint his eyes and say - yeah, you, you probably burn about 1600 Cal. a day just laying in bed - with moderate exercise, you should lose about a pound a week on 1600 Cal. a day. He was exactly right. Back then I ate junk food but it still worked. I am on a vegan Whole Food Plant Based diet now - not calorie restricted but I want to lose about 30 lbs and your repeated illustrations about less calorie dense foods and calorie deficit are awesome. This will work for me, I know it, and I appreciate your support and the effort you put into these videos. Let me know how I can suport your channel, other than "like and subscribe" if you have any other fund raisers. I am not big on monthly donations but big on on-time support, T-shirts, etc.

    Fabulous video Chelsea. Can see you have put a lot of time and effort into the content, design and production of this video . Well done ! My takeaway is that I’m going to aim for 1,500 - 1;800 as an average across the week including eating out sometimes on weekends. Also that I probably am underestimating my calories sometimes and some tracking for a few weeks would be helpful. Also think there is an opportunity for you to explore all the fibre in your food options which obviously keep you full & can aid weight loss due to elimination. In addition the nutrients in your options are superior too.

    Thank you for the This or That type video over counting calories. I need to get into a calorie deficit. I'm a Torrance lifer in sunny California on the very typical American diet turning more plant based for environmental and animal compassion. I originally researched for recipes, but SO GLAD I found you and Tia @HungryVeganMama talking about simple whole foods you don't need recipes for. Whew! I like to prepare, but not cook, yet. If I hadn't found you I know I would have been still using oil, avocado wondering why I'm maintaining weight eating vegetables. You two are great for what I need :) :) :)

  • @stargazerbird
    @stargazerbird 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Awesome video. Fascinating study you quote. I have been calorie counting for most of a year and lost 29 pounds. So it works but there are huge problems with calorie counting. It’s very hard to be remotely accurate. Even if you weigh everything the trackers give wildly different values for the same food. I have tried four different apps and all of them are basically a random number generator. Then tracking at all is all but impossible if you eat out or with friends.
    I think the other problem with just using calorie counting is that they measure the calories by basically burning the food. Our bodies do not extract energy from food that way. So how many calories are actually absorbed from a food is a big variable. Recent studies are showing that highly processed foods deliver more of their calories. Contrast this with high fibre whole foods where we are probably getting up to half the stated calories in the apps. This is why Chelsea lost more weight while seeming to eat more calories.
    I still think it’s useful to calorie track, at least when you are adding a new food to your regular meal plans. It can still be surprising to find how many calories are in a healthy food choice. Bread, for instance is a pretty poor value on the calorie front and is also highly processed. It also allows you to include the odd calorie dense foods like dark chocolate and nuts or a glass of wine occasionally without blowing the count for the day.
    I am 69 and so should be burning less but I am tall, run twice a week, get in 10,000 steps a day and lift weights. I am pretty buff. If I put my basic stats into the online TDEE calculators my number is around 1350 for the lowest activity level. Add on a daily average of 500 for exercise and I can only eat 1800 for maintenance, which is nuts. I can eat way more than that to maintain. My husband on the other hand is younger, taller and still fit but has to eat less than I do.
    So basically doing a diet using just numbers can be wildly out both ways. Move a lot, build your muscle and eat whole foods, avoid oils and added fats. Chelsea is right. I would also add to use your hunger as a guide. As long as you are eating whole foods and getting a good amount of protein your hunger tells you when you in a deficit. Be a little hungry every day. Eat to fill yourself, but wait for that cue.

      @alexcattell6201 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for taking the time to type this out! The absorption of calories is a great point and explains why I seem to do way better when I’m concentrating on WFPB and not counting calories. I eat more processed and packaged stuff when counting coz it’s easier to track and if I have calories let for the day then I use them

    • @TheVivaciousNerd
      @TheVivaciousNerd หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alexcattell6201 Yeah! I found that the counting was good for keeping me accountable and honest with myself about what and how much I eat. But once getting onto the groove of eating healthier, more satiating foods, the benefits diminished. I would often eeaa more simply because I had calories “left to spend” rater than listening to my body. It goes the other way too, due to my cycle, exercise etc, my appetite is sometimes higher and I would restrict myself (even for fruit and stuff) when it would’ve been fine to just have an extra snack and satiate the extra hunger I felt that day. Tracking is a helpful tool for putting things into perspective but not actually great long term. Also the longer I did it the more I ended up thinking about food which is the opposite of what I want

    Since switching to wfpb and eating lots of non starchy vegetables, I’m finding that I can’t eat enough calories. I started tracking just because I thought it was really low, and I was right. I’m struggling to eat 1,000 calories a day. I know it sounds crazy, but I’m. It starving. I am full after each meal. My struggle is that I guess I get full easily. I never snack and often struggle to have a third meal because I just don’t get hungry until 4-5 hours after I’ve eaten. I’m not eating anything processed like pastas or bread and I’ve eliminated overt fats like avocado, nuts, nut butters and seeds. I’m not sure if it matters if my calories are so low since I’m eating lots of veggies and feel nourished.

I could call this image an infographic important to understand the amount of calories in these foods so you don't need to count calories. It's hard to understand that we can be full, eating less calories but more food and nourished just by eating sheet baked veggies. These foods are delicious and satisfying. Hi, is it normal to be really bloated? I started implementing the tips here and for the first time in my life, I eat until I'm full without feeling heavy or resorting to copious amounts of nuts a couple of hours after eating a small portion because of hunger. I lost weight about a year ago on a diet of 1400 kcal, so I'm sticking to that here as well. The diet I followed, however, included really small portions and I felt so hungry all the time that I never want to repeat it. Also, weight loss doesn't come quickly for me, so I know it will take some time before I see any results. What's a little bit discouraging is that I guess I now look fatter since I'm really bloated and gassy. Been on the diet for 2 weeks like this. If I try to eat less fiber to limit the bloating, however, I start to feel hungry. Anyone else experience the same?

    Raw to 4 isn't about reducing calories. I don't follow it, but know that you are meant to aim for a certain number of calories per day. I think the minimum is 2500 calories for women and 3000 for men, although don't quote me on that...

    Great video! Would you consider making a video about NEAT? I feel a lot of people will eat very restrictive, low calorie diets and work out intensely yet not see any progress because their overall activity level has dropped (e.g. going from 10k to 5k steps a day). People get frustrated and confused but it’s most likely they’re unintentionally eating at maintenance.

    Been tracking for a year while doing mcdougal maximum weight loss style (vegan for many many years), lost 30 pounds, down to the last 10 or so, and I haven’t lost any weight in weeks and weeks. Calories haven’t gone up. Kicker....I average 1350 a day. Supposedly I’m burning about 1700 cals a day (Apple Watch). That’s working out moderately at least 30 mins a day. Even been gaining a bit lately. Calories haven’t changed. I literally weigh everything that I ingest. Type of food hasn’t changed. Still eating about same weight of food too. Has my body already adapted to 1350?!?! I sure hope not 😒
    Height 56 inches
    Age 46
    Current weight 130
    Suggestions? I’m still eating 6-8 pounds of food a day, but I’d like more calories sometimes.

      My suggestion is to join my program Lean with Plants because we cover all of these kind of questions. 🤪 Plateau's are a normal part of weight loss and with how much you've lost you'd expect that to stall and stop.
      Personally, I would STRONGLY recommend ditching the counting and at this look at increasing your NEAT. I did an entire podcast episode on it so go check that out podcasts.apple.com/nz/podcast/lean-with-plants/id1502040576?i=1000497988464

      Yes your metabolism has adapted. It’s called adaptive thermogenesis or metabolic adaptation. Your body gradually burns less and less calories to compensate for less calories coming in. Some people don’t get affected by it and some people do get more affected by it. I’m one of those people that is sensitive to calorie restriction unfortunately so I have to make sure I count my calories and eat enough. I would do a small reverse diet and then reduce calories again once your metabolism has been restored. This is not starvation mode, it’s just a way for your body to protect itself from less food over a long period of time.

      Yea, but think about it. Theirs nutrition in it vitamins, fiber and no fat. That's where and why you see the weight lose. Lots and lots of fiber. So it's basically like you not eating all those calories because it comes right out....

    Once you get into a calorie deficit to lose weight, do you need to stay eating that many calories to maintain that lower weight? So if you made some of these substitutions to lose weight, would you then need to keep those substitutions long term?

    Also worth mentioning that calories are processed differently by the body. Raw food doesn't give the body as many calories on label. Whole foods take more calories for your body to digest, etc. Good idea to not focus so much on calories and also! if the only way you can get to a weight is eating steamed brocolli all day, then it's not worth it! focus on what is sustainable!

    I count my calories, I use the Lose It App
    And I averaged between 1300 to 1400 calories and I actually lose weight!
    This is what works for me, the only way that I can lose weight
    I’m 47 female and I’m at 193 pounds
    I have medical issues as well, so my Autiomune disorders make it hard to lose weight!!
    I check what my body burns and I eat less then what I’m burning so this why it works for me!
    I tried to eat 50/50 starch solution and it’s way too much calories for me!!
    I’m eating WFPB

    • @ChelseaMae
      @ChelseaMae  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, so you're losing weight because you're in a calorie deficit. Calorie counting is one way to do that, but as you can see from a lot of these comments its not the only way and it doesn't always work because people still don't lose weight!!
      Anything that gets you reducing your calories from your starting point will help you get into a deficit, which is why the 'reduction model' that I've shown is so effective. The calories aren't too much if they are less than you're usual and you are maintaining. The goal is to do the least amount of work possible and eat as much as you possibly can while still seeing results. :)

      @@ChelseaMae Well my digestion has to heal as well, I had so many bad issues that I couldn’t hardly digest anything! Too much bulk like veggies gets stuck and I get so bloated!
      Eating less each meal actually will help my digestion!! My body is just a mess right now!
      I have tried eating less without counting calories but I just can’t lose weight, I wind up eating more then I’m burning!! It’s been difficult
