  • If you love pilot watches and appreciate history and vintage airplanes like the DC-3 and Lockheed Super Constellation then the Breitling Navitimer may be for you. With a functional slide rule bezel, workhouse movement and over half a century of history behind it the Navitimer is a true modern day classic.

    I love those black and white comedic sections. Also thanks for sharing who you are. What works is you being you. I think many people connect with that. A B test what topics work and then check out the views and comments. Then refine. I am almost taking for granted the improved video and audio quality. So good. Keep it up.

    Hi anthony its me toni, its 0414 am here and I'm just watching rolex watches as usual on youtube=) Your channel was on my radar and now I'm so tired I'm just watching your video without sound( headset) the navitimer was actually on my watch list for long time, its beautiful, comparing to your omega its very nice, and the bracelet of breathing is awesome. The navitimer price has gone very high since couple years now. But when it comes to brand no one beats rolex=) as usual. I´ve been getting a memo that the retailer has submariner watches in their stock and I'm more than welcome to drop in, but stil waiting for daytona. My birthday is in one month and i hope that I wear a daytona that month. Every homepage of rolex retailers have the daytona on the first page. Its like premiere for a movie hehehe. Im gonna check out your new videos tomorrow in couple hours so tired good night my friend zzzzZZZzzzz

    Hello, sir! While I prefer the longer watch reviews, I know not everyone does, and this was well done. The Navitimer "is" iconic, and it's hopefully going to someday be a part of my luxury tool watch icon trio, joining a Sub and a Speedy. Now as to the channel, I've enjoyed watching the evolution so far, and am excited to see new directions. My ears kinda perked up when you mentioned architecture. I was a huge dork the other day driving with my wife pointing out examples of brutalist architecture in downtown Dallas. Before your video on the Monster, I hadn't a clue that was even a style/school. I'd love to see more of that content. I'm always up for knowledgeable auto content. There's a lot of ways you could take that, and while I see the access to varied autos as an obstacle, you're a smart guy (grin) I bet you'll figure it out. Thanks again for your time and effort put into these videos. It's not hyperbole when I say that you've had an impact on my life. That's no small thing. Cheers!

      @JANTHONYCHANNEL  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is super cool!!! I am really happy that you have developed an appreciation for Brutalist architecture. There is a lot of great architecture in Dallas, it reminds me of Detroit ( I mean that in a good way) as there is some great diversity and some well preserved buildings. My favorite building in Dallas in the mid-century styled Statler Hotel. I understand that the building is being brought back to life as I write this. Thank you for the support and feedback. I am really happy to hear that you find value in my content!

    Hi J. This video popped up on my TH-cam home page as a recommended video. This is the first of your videos that I have watched and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Liked and subscribed!
    I think you should follow your dreams and put all of your energy into making this a full-time job. "Find what you like to do and do it every day". Going forward, I would like to see a variety of content in the "men's lifestyle" genre: watches, cars, travel, style etc.
    Keep your eye on the goal. Good luck!

    J Anthony, hey Brother, another great video. I feel the same as another posters here in I like the long reviews. It's good when you geek out. You could do a short review first, then geek out with all the details that we enthusiasts love. Your video and audio quality is so vastly improved I feel you've got it really right. What I appreciate in your videos is your straight forwardness and your honesty. On another note, I agree that the Breitling Navatimer is iconic. But that being said, the nav computer on the dial and bezel, though operational, is mainly there for the cool factor. If a pilot was in a situation where the RNAV failed, and they forgot to pack their Jeppesen Sanderson CR-2, and all they had was the watch, they'd be in a serious smelly pile of dog dung. I also laughed at the crash helmet in the B&W early into it. As far as your second part of the video goes, I hope you manage a way to do it full time. I admit I don't know what it would take. But as I've said, find out what you really love to do, then figure out a way to get paid doing it. A job maybe something you don't like, but a career is something you should love. I do mine very much, and see myself doing it for quite a while. Anyway, another great review my friend!!!

      Thank you, my review on Sunday will a substantially longer one so hopefully people will like it. It may be the longest one I've done actually. Great way to characterize the usefulness of the Navitimer in flight, it is certainly more of a lifestyle piece than a useful tool. Thank you for the feedback and support. Indeed, a career should be something you love.

    Great video. I think it's admirable that you're trying to take this full time. That'd be awesome. Anyway, I think you could make a "Best of weekly Ebay deals" in terms of watches as far as it being sort of a mini series within the larger scope of the channel. You could also venture into the car world and maybe talk about new models coming out and include photographs etc. and maybe also discuss vehicle models and/or brands that you would or would not recommend based on personal experience and what not.

    • @JANTHONYCHANNEL
      @JANTHONYCHANNEL  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. Those are good tips. With cars, I need to find a way to point to facts as I have strong biases and I would want people to understand the reasons behind them. You can attack a person but you can't attack a fact. As for eBay, there are so many sketchy sellers and the market changes frequently that that may be difficult but I'll think it over, perhaps there is a way to address it.

    I really like the longer videos also. There are tons of brief overviews out there for anyone looking for a "Just the Facts" fix. For those who want more though, your in-depth reviews fill a real void. And your combination of acumen and persona keeps even the longest vids from being boring. I think if you carried that over to other interests, you'd have a real shot at full-time TH-cam success. All the best to you.

    @chr1s60 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Uh oh, classy Breitling comes out and so does the collared shirt! Haha.
    Great review of a great watch. As for the reviews, to me length is less important than content. If it takes 30 minutes to get across all your points, so be it. The most important thing I look for with reviews on a channel is variety. A lot of channels do tons of Rolex, Omega, Seiko and other main top tier/common brand watches. I have no problem with those reviews but love seeing some other less common ones thrown in regardless of how many might feel about the brands many watches have next to no reviews available on them. Examples could be like maybe Panerai, Tudor, Oris, TAG, Tissot, Steinhart, Squale... and so on. Some of these are more popular than others, but if you do a video search on some of those there isn't much in the way of quality reviews. I also think using some type of rating scale can help a lot too.
    My recommendations for the channel would be the following:
    If you want to do more of the deeper style just random conversations, I think starting a second channel that is maybe strictly vlogs would be a great idea for that. It would kind of leave the main channel for watches or more specific topics and let people know what to expect here, while anyone wanting the randomness and conversation could sub to the second channel as well. This would also give you a chance to test out topics to see which ones would be best to incorporate with the main channel.
    For watch suggestions I think a routine where you maybe rotate through the style or price of watches weekly would be good. For examle; over a month you could do a sub $500 watch week 1, a mid range $500-2,000 watch, a high end $2,000+ watch one week and the 4th week could be a random either new brand, accessories, cases or any of the above. You could also use the same format but instead if price do styles such a dress watch, diver, field watch, chrono, etc.
    I would like to see more people take on some of the watches that don't necessarily get a lot of respect, warranted or not. You've kind of done this in the past with Invicta and I enjoyed it a lot. Tons of reviewers will put down a brand or specific watch but rarely is there an actual unbiased review of the watch or brand to break it down to people why they feel that way. It leads to the conclusion that a lot of reviewers will disrespect a watch or brand just because it seems like the thing to do as a give in to the snobbery that exists in the community.
    Sorry for the book I just wrote but hopefully it can help you out some or maybe spark some other ideas in your head. Looking forward to what you come up with.

    Hey J. Anthony, love the channel buddy! I just finished the RTK program by James Heisig which is arguably the most effective way to memorize identification of the 2200 Kanji the Japanese ministry of education makes Japanese citizens go through up until they finish high school. Definitely look into that if you want to learn how to read! You seem like the type of guy that does a lot of things on your own and want to be flexible, which makes RTK perfect for you as it's something you do 100% on your own whenever, wherever. I've been to Japan many times also for extended periods, if you ever have any questions let me know!
    By the way, congrats on the Navitimer, great watch!

    I personally like both long and short videos, but with reviews, I appreciate all the little geeky details, personally. Also, super cool that you're trying to go full-time! I think that in order to do that and have it remain sustainable, you may have to expand beyond watches. Honestly, I'm not into cars, but there are lots of people who are, probably way more than are into watches, so perhaps setting up a second car channel could be of benefit. Any of the people who are interested in both watches and cars will likely subscribe to both, and you'd gain another big audience just among the car enthusiasts.
    Aaaand, if you want to learn Japanese, first of all, I recommend following your dream and moving here! Especially Osaka, where I live, because it's a kickass city with a lot of character and great food, and we could hang out and geek out about watches, haha. =P But being surrounded by the language really helped me. Watch lots of Japanese TV to pick up on cultural, non-textbook stuff, interact with Japanese people as much as possible (or non-Japanese people with a higher Japanese level than yourself, who can help explain parts of the grammar or whatever it may be that you have trouble with) and approach learning the language with goals in mind. Here's a really great video that I always recommend to people trying to learn Japanese. Check it out: th-cam.com/video/_IOZbJ7PCPk/w-d-xo.html I think if you follow the tips in this video, it will really help in becoming proficient in the language. I wish I had thought of these myself!
    Also, I'm bbbaines on Instagram. Recently, I've been posting my watch pics with captions in both Japanese and English. That may or may not be of help in learning, but if you want to check it out, please do. If you want to practice Japanese too, I would be happy to chat with you.

      I just added you on Instagram. I really appreciate the tips and perspective. I'll be sure to watch that video. One of my good friends lived in Osaka as well and he loved it there. His only regret was working for a Japanese company but that is another story. I'll have to investigate what options I have. Again, thank you for the insight!

  • @Lee_K_5555
    @Lee_K_5555 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Since you're a Pistonhead like me, I'll use an analogy about TH-cam automotive channel styles. Alex Dykes does a wonderful job on his Alex on Autos channel going over the pluses and minuses of a vehicle, trying to be as objective as possible. On the other hand, Jack Baruth will do a written blog review on TTAC about a vehicle that's less about the measurements and specs and more about his impressions: a meditation on his feelings about why he does or doesn't like a given car. Both are valuable to the viewer, but I profess to get more out of Jack's musings because I understand what his style and biases are.
    We have a lot of avenues in which to understand the details about a watch. Other than movement type, case and bracelet dimensions, lume type, materials used for the bezel insert and crystal -- all of which can be done in about two to three minutes of your video review -- what is much more important to me as a viewer is what you, J. Anthony, think about the watch. I want to know what your likes and dislikes are. I want to know why a certain watch does or doesn't speak to you. I want to understand your motivations in purchasing a watch in the first place, and what made you sell a piece if it has left your collection. This is what I think will make your channel shine above the others.
    I point to your Shinola review as one that I think you did particularly well. You didn't bash the watch simply because of the quartz movement or controversy of whether it isn't or isn't manufactured in Detroit, and you told us why you bonded with it.
    So, to sum up:
    Shorter is better than longer (think Bruce Williams' excellent concise pieces rather than TGV's meandering tomes)
    Specs and features can be done quickly at the beginning, but in enough depth for your more important personal impressions
    WHY is much more important to us viewers (Jeffrey McMahon is great at this) than WHAT. It's about the passion for watches.
    Respectfully submitted, of course. :)
    Keep up the great work, J.

    Hi. Thanks for the review of the Breitling Navitimer. It help me to feel a bit less scared of the watch, which has always seemed very complicated to me. From you, I don't mind deeper reviews of watches because you know your stuff, have an approachable style and your videos are great with the sound and camera work. What I'd like to see is more reviews and collaborative work with some other people in the hobby. Some you've done already with Kibble, Federico etc. but more of this conversational type in a focussed way, taking a theme or type of watch(es). If your going to branch into art, architecture, philosophy, personal reflection, design in other fields and so on, maybe another channel for this, with links to it and between the channels. Just a suggestion, as going too broad may confuse views who are looking for a particular type of content/focus. I really wanted to say the next part privately to you but can't readily find your email. I, too, don't make small talk easily, but I've had to learn to do so due to my very public role and leadership position. Even so, it's still always hard work for me, and I've a few decades on you! So, for me, that's just the price I pay to do what I do, then retreat to my private space to re-charge. I'd be very wary of going full time into TH-cam-ing...it could actually lead to further virtual relationships, which feel right to you, but end up not being at all conducive to your wholeness. Your current job in medical equipment marketing pushes you to engage face to face with others. This can be 'tiring' for want of a better word. It can also be vital to get you moving out of yourself and your inner world. The trouble with virtual, electronic meetings and communities is that we don't really get to engage our full senses nor do we get to actually go beyond appearances and sounds. Our psyche is designed to engage at the conscious and sub-conscious level, verbal, visual, non-verbal and sensed. Only actual physical encounters can do this, stretch us and hopefully nurture us on the way. The fact is that neither I, nor most in what you call the 'community' really know you since we only know the tiny bit you let us see and hear. If you do choose to go full time TH-cam, then make sure you talk to someone reliable before taking such a leap. If all that I've said is rot, chuck it aside. It would only prove my point though, that virtual engagement, while helpful, is very limited, because only you know you. Said all of this with care and appreciation for you as a fellow human being. No other motive at all. Best of blessings!

      Thank you Mark, I really appreciate you saying that. I totally get what you are saying and clearly you and I share a similar perspective on the world and socializing in general. To your point, people only know what I share with them and there is a lot I don't share with them intentionally. Making the channel a full time thing I would be careful not to shift the focus too much on me and keep it on the content (I hope). I hope people can see my content for what it is rather than who I am as a person. No doubt knowing me better would change their perspectives for better and for worse depending on their world views. I appreciate my privacy yet I also appreciate authenticity and finding the right balance will be crucial for me. Thank you my friend. My email is hidden in the about page on my channel, I intentionally don't like to draw attention to it.

    3 tips for learning another language:
    1. Find someone who speaks the language to speak with you in that language. The only true way to learn a language is to speak it.
    2. Start watching TV in that language (start with subtitles and then turn them off). TV is better than movies because you learn the characters over time and pick up on slang more easily.
    3. Chat online with people in that language. This will help with reading, writing and conversation skills.
    These 3 things will develop your skills with understanding, speaking and writing the language. Learning a language is an immersive process that can't really be achieved just by reading a book.

    Hey J. you motivated me to create a TH-cam a/c & subscribe. J.Anthony Japan sounds good. My first comment..Good channel, interesting content . Long is good and geek out imo. Language- Go there,. Watch kids cartoons. The rest is already in some good comments below. 6-12 months to functional. Maybe try Rosetta Stone to get a start. Don't get stressed if you get it wrong. Ppl will give you cuedos for trying. Thanks for your vids.

      Thank you for taking the time to setup an account and for giving me your support and feedback! I'm thinking of picking up the Genki books and I already watch quite a bit of English subbed Japanese shows, perhaps I should focus on some of the cartoons as well. Thank you my friend.

    There are no tips or shortcuts for learning a language, especially one where there are so few native speakers in the U.S. I'm going for C92 in Aug for 3-4 weeks and I really have no hope of learning kanji beyond select memorization I'm just hoping to get by and not burden anyone, but if one were to move there I'm sure you'd learn MUCH faster than in the U.S. trying to teach yourself.

    Hi J! First off, get a Japanese girlfriend. You'll be fluent in no time. A more expensive option would be to move to Japan. I currently host a Japanese exchange student who is living with my family to learn English. Maybe you can do an exchange -- he tutors you in Japanese and you tutor him in English. He's in high school and is 15 years old. More focused engagement on learning english will certainly help him and it may help you as well. Tell me if this will work and I'll send my email and his email to you via a more secure channel.
    As far as your channel is concerned, i think you're progressing at a fine pace. Your subscriber base is growing, your content is meaningful and seems to resonate with viewers and the production value has improved by a significant magnitude. Maybe you don't need to change anything and things will grow organically from where you are now. But if you're ambitious and want to push things along, well, I can offer advice but it will entail a long comment. Thanks for asking, by the way.
    The problem with watch channels is that the content is intrinsically consumer based. And because watches are luxury items, you can't help but fall into certain conceptual traps regarding desire and prestige. When I worked as a fashion photographer we (I worked with my wife, Claudine) tried really hard not to inspire envy which is what most other photographers were consciously or unconsciously doing. With this insight and strategy, our work became much more distinct and personally gratifying.
    So, how is my experience analogous to what you do? As I said, because you are dealing with luxury goods within a consumerist construct you have to find a way to buck the trend. I notice that most channels fall into the trap of inspiring envy and are narrowly consumer based - A versus B; thumbs up/thumbs down; buy this/don't buy that. (The most blatant example is TGV's wildly subjective and odiously pretentious "duels." Please don't do that). Of course, that is a proven pathway to success and you can go down that route if you like. But I have a feeling that you're not that lazy or shallow. My advice to you is to make an analysis of media from Hodinkee to Archie Luxury; Roger Ebert to Pauline Kael; The Young Turks to MSNBC; Justin Bieber to Joe Pass. Whatever media you consume, enjoy, or hate must be examined critically for merit or demerit. Profound change is necessary but that can't be done without deep analysis of what you and other youtube channels are doing. So, my friend, take some time -- as much as you need, don't rush -- think deeply, construct a formula and then execute. And keep your job. For now. Everything you want will come to be in time. Visualise, study and strategise.
    Specific ideas? I don't have many but what I do have, I prefer to offer them via a more secure method. People steal ideas y'know.
    However, in my humble opinion, you're doing great brother J!

      @JANTHONYCHANNEL  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow.... I'm humbled by the long and thoughtful response. Thank you as always. Native Japanese speakers are a bit of a rarity where I am from so dating one is a bit of a challenge haha. As for more secure, private messages, I have an email for this channel under my about section on my page. I'd post it here however I don't want people abusing it. Your perspective as always is refreshing, informed and appreciated!

    you can make the reviews a little longer than that J

  • @BlagoP
    @BlagoP 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    In my opinion, longer, more detailed videos about the watch are better, including all of the negative aspects of the watch and it's limitations, and what you don't like about it.
    But you have to ask yourself what do people want to see, and what is no one else on youtube making videos about? People want to know where they can get deals on nice watches, what websites provide the cheapest prices, how much the watches cost, how much you got the watch for and where you got it from. I don't see any watch channels on youtube providing this information or talking about prices, money, and places to get them.
    Also, I don't think that doing youtube videos full time will be enough for you especially since you already have a good career. Maybe use youtube to advertise and further a watch business, but just doing videos I don't think will be enough.

    • @JANTHONYCHANNEL
      @JANTHONYCHANNEL  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate the suggestions. I have always hesitated to tell people where I buy things because as expensive as some of these watches can be I worry about my viewers having a negative experience. That said, I really should talk about pricing in my videos. I will try to remember that.

    Dude keep your day job. Your channel is awesome but I think you run the risk of having something you enjoy turn into something else once there's the pressure of having it be your sole source of income. If you do go full time youtube I'd recommend keeping it specialized to a specific topic unless you're doing something like 'men's health' or 'style' or whatever. Keep doing your thing though, I enjoy stopping by to spend time with you every once in a while on the watch tip!

    If u make a review video u should be correct and precise and not spreading false information. Breitling Navitimer has Breitling01 movement which is not ETA-based but made totally in-house. Additionally it has 70 hours of power reserve, not 42 hours. You can get all technical data from homepage of Breitling.
