Nesting is placing a Sequence into another Sequence. This tutorial will show you how to create and manage working with Nested Sequences.

I use nests a lot like pre comps in after effect. When certain effects only work well on unaltered footage.
For example i use a lot of 4k footage in my 1080p sequences. If I want to stabilize those clips, I have to use a nest because warp stabilizer dosen't work with footage that has been scaled.
Another time I use nests is when I work with 120p slow motion. If I want to add a blur, or even just a simple opacity fade, the key frames don't match the timeline as they follow the original frames.
So using nests to alter footage to the properties you want is great :)

I learned that last one the hard way - trying to blur/greek some text on a sped up clip. Ended up exporting the sped up clip and dropping it back into my timeline - nesting would have been much faster!

Thanks Colin ... This was exactly what I was looking for !! I wanted to take 12 sequences and have them all in 1 sequence ... So i see that all I had to do was highlight all sequences and drag them into a new sequence.... I was trying tring to copy /paste them but the effects were not transfering properly ...... Great example, it is also amazing if you have footage that doesnt match your sequence settings but you want to apply stabilizing ect to it you have to nest it and apply the effect inside the nest

Hey Colin. Nice video as usual. I can think of a situation where I use nests a lot. While stabilizing a clip that has a speed change applied OR does not match sequence settings, nesting is the best option. :)

In that last example, where you had the 4 sequences (show intro then three shows), if you wanted to, say, add a Constant Power crossfade from the end of each show into the beginning of the next -- is that possible at this level? I'm working on a project with a similar structure where I want to have individual chapters of clips in their own sequences but have a master sequence of all the sequences lined up together. Each chapter has hard audio cuts at either end and I would love to be able to apply the crossfade across nested sequences like I can across regular clips.

Yes, any audio effect or transition will work as if the Nests are clips.

I will put together a video showing my setup. I use a corded mouse because I can't stand the lag of a wireless mouse. I found the cheap Verbatim mouse to be the most comfortable and more accurate. www.verbatim.com/prod/accessories/mice/mice-notebook/bravo-mouse-sku-99743/
I also use an extended keyboard and have my left had positioned always on the left side of the keyboard to access modifier keys. Plus two crisp and bright 27" 4k monitors from LG.
Great description of the use of nesting. Some years ago I worked on a soap opera that appeared on our local cable access show. It had a very complex opening that introduced every character at the beginning. Whenever there was a cast change I had to update the opening. I see that with nesting I'd just have to make the changes to a copy of the nest and then use that opening until the next change.
Each show was in a separate project. So here's the questions:
1. Can I copy a nest from one project to another?
2. Does it make sense to have a separate asset project to contain the many elements such as the openings and building establishing shots that are used in multiple show projects?
3. I always kept all the shots for each show in a separate folder. I imagine it would be best to keep all the asset files in their own folder along with the asset project. When I copy a nest from the asset project in the asset folder into the show project in that show folder, will the copied nest still be linked to the assets in the asset folder?
4. Do you have any other tips on managing assets that are used in multiple projects? (It's very easy to inadvertently change or move an asset that will make past shows unrenderable.)
5. Another issue is how to archive a complex show to make sure all it's assets get saved in a way that makes them restorable later.
A Nest is just a Sequence so you'd copy it the same way. You'd have to open another Project or import a single Sequence via the Media Browser.
It's important to note that this creates a duplicate Sequence and there is no link to the Sequence from the Project you copied it from.
There are no rules for media management, it's up to the preference of the user. Also, there is no way to prevent accidentally moving assets, Premiere Pro does now know what you're doing on the hard drive so if you move something, you'll have to relink it.
Lastly, you can use the Project Manager to archive a Project and control the collection of all needed assets. Here's a tutorial: th-cam.com/video/jiytlYDiofI/w-d-xo.html

Here's a suggestion for another video. I wan't to shoot, edit and upload while traveling. I've used Adobe Premiere Clip on my Android phone with some success, but it isn't very flexible. I would love it if you covered travel editing using lightweight editing equipment with good battery life. Because I no longer care to own Apple products, I'd like to Chromebooks and Android tablets. Also like to here about using Premiere Elements and Rush. Thanks again.

I don't really have anything lightweight for shooting on the go, other than my Canon 5D MkIII - which, once I add lenses and some kind of support rig, it's fairly large.
I shoot a lot on my Nexus 6P and publish those using Adobe Clip. I also shoot with my GH4 but have to wait until I get home to my laptop. Sadly I have discovered that Adobe will not be supporting Windows 7 or AMD CPUs from now on, so I'm going to drop my Adobe CC subscription until such time as I upgrade to a computer running Windows 10. (My Lenovo W530 laptop edits my 4K footage from my GH4 just fine.) I'm not doing pro work so I'm going to try some of the free NLE suites such as HitFilm. Of all the apps in Adobe CC, I think I'll miss Audition the most.

It's not exactly the same but if you twirl down Time Remapping in the Effects Control Panel you'll see a graph.

I never need to do that. It's a relatively new feature for Premiere Pro but it's a very old customer request so lot's of people will use it.
Hi! So I nested a sequence. Inside the nested sequence, there is a background that is quite large. THE BACKGROUND GETS CUT when I go outside the nest and move it to the right or left side. Is there an effect where I can collapse the nest (similar to After Effects) and the background extends?
No. Premiere Pro does not have the same feature as After Effects.

I'm trying to make a Nesting and run into the following problem. After I lassoed all the clips plus audio and clicked nesting the images are nested but the audio is not. I just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong now. Do you know it?

My only thought is that maybe you're selecting linked audio but not the video? You can always duplicate the Sequence, remove the clips you don't want in the Nest, then drop that into your other Sequence. Just as a workaround.
I have a question. Is there anyway to make the Nest transparent so that I can still see the different cuts inside the Nest because I don't always want to open the nest just to check where one clip ends and the other starts?
No, there's no way of doing that. Sorry.
Thank you for this video, Colin. I have a question though. When I nest, the nest loses information from the clips within. For example I positioned several (>100) clips off screen, that I want to move into the screen all together, so I nested them to put keyframes on the nest and pan/zoom them. Unfortunatly, everything that was outside the sequence frame was left out :( I know there is a way to make the sequence frame bigger and then export to a 1080 sequence but then I would lose all my positions from my current work, which is almost at the end of editing since nesting is mostly done at the end and I just discovered this flaw in adobe pp at this point. If there is a way to solve this, I would be so happy because at this point I can't believe why you just can't choose the area you want to nest or why it just doesn't keep all the information (even if it's off-screen)???
I could not recreate the issue you're talking about. I just created a Sequence with a clip completely off screen, made it a nest, opened the nest and the off screen clip was still there.
@@VideoRevealed Thank you for trying helping me out Colin! It is indeed still there but if I put a keyframe on the nest to make the off screen clips come into the screen they don't appear, only the ones that where on screen originally, and even then, only the part of them that was on screen, the rest isn't. I resolved it by reputting them on a bigger sequence so nothing is off screen, then nesting and then put the nest in a normal size sequence. Still, it's a pity that nesting has this problem.

Select the media and choose File> Export> Media.
Or better yet, just add all the clips you want to convert to Media Encoder and pick the new format you want to export to.

Hi. So the first clip that is imported into the timeline is always the master aka main sequence?
Correct so always choose the clip that you want the Sequence to be. Or, go to File> New> New Sequence and pick the correct setting.

Nesting is very useful, but my edits don't require using them because I have everything in a single Timeline. If I do have to use them, they're great but I get annoyed that I can't easily change the timing in the nest without opening it up, but then I can't see the timing in the main Timeline.
After Effects has a way to lock the display for the main Timeline while you're editing a different Timeline.

Nesting is pretty much essential to Premiere Pro CC, since some of the bugs can be bypassed by nesting. Unfortunately, there are just TOO many bugs in Premiere Pro CC 2020.

@@VideoRevealed Not sure if pvoviding feedbacks on that platform is actually meaningful or not. I found that masking doesn't work on a speed-ramped clip, and I found out that this bug has been around for a few years.
Today I just found out that time remapping doesn't work on a clip with reversed speed. This bug has been around for a while too.
Maybe I will provide some feedbacks once I find out more bugs.
