    🟥🟥🟥
    UPDATE: Importing now works with empty folders and folders with one item. This works for File: Import, Media Browser and Drag and Drop. As of Aug. 2023, it does not work with the Import Mode but will in the future.

    I made a "standard folder" template with all the subfoldes i usually use, and it's as easy as copying and renaming that empty template folder every time a start a project. Just fill it up with media afterwards.

    Nice, Mr. Smith. This is something I learned the hard way. In my earlier days of film school, I was editing a short which was over 20 minutes long and had a lot of cuts. I did not organize the folders and it became one confused and idiotic experience. I wish my editing instructors explained this to me beforehand. But they didn't. And that is why you are awesome.

    Good advice. I actually created a batch script that creates a basic directory structure and you select the kind of projects and it creates the appropriate folders. It's really beneficial to have the same structure for every project and I even have a couple of more folders. For cache files and even for exporting. I also divide the footage into folders with regards to different scenes and Broll to organize it before even starting a project file in Premiere. Works like a charm and beneficial for transporting and backup.

    Didn't know about that aspect of the import feature. Cool. And thanks for all the great content.
    Don't know why people talk so much about using Bridge/LR/some other program to read media cards. I just use Explorer/Finder to cut & paste them. Seems pretty easy. Of course I don't rename files. I can see how they'd be handy if you want to do an auto-rename to some other naming sequence. But don't really see a point to that.
    On backups, the 3-2-1 system is a great one to set up to do automatically: 3 copies, 2 different media types, 1 offsite.
    I have a project template directory that contains: a file structure similar to what you showed already created in it, resources I use in every project, and AE and PP projects preloaded with the common resources. Starting a new project is a matter of copying that directory, renaming it, copying the media to the appropriate directories and firing up AE/PP.
    Cheers.

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adobe Prelude was developed at the request of the BBC and CNN, both of who have very strict guidelines on managing media and metadata and they wanted to have an application that required very little training and guaranteed the resulting files met those guidelines and were ready to use.
      For a lot of indie filmmakers, the fact that many DSLRs have duplicate file names can really cause a problem in the future.

    • @HarleyPebley
      @HarleyPebley 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting, didn't know that about the news orgs. If I thought about it, I'd just have assumed they'd have their own in-house software to handle media management.

    I feel so smart. I have been doing it this way for a while. Now, I need to find your tutorial- on how to open two or more projects in the timeline, and also, did you make a video on how to save text, banners and co. on Adobe? Thanks a lot.

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you are smart for doing it the right way!
      You can open multiple Projects and Timelines in Premiere Pro. Just choose Open from the File menu to open more than one Project. But it gets a little confusing which Timelines belong to which Project so I suggest only opening one at a time. For saving and loading graphics, I think Libraries are the best:
      th-cam.com/video/_A4Ot8qQvMo/w-d-xo.html
      You can also "peak" inside another Project and copy anything to your current Project: th-cam.com/video/UKuNTPXmfnA/w-d-xo.html

    • @SensationalStina
      @SensationalStina 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for your reply. You’re the best. I’m currently working on another edit now and your response time Was just perfect. What I really needed was “peak” inside another completed project of mine for graphics. And I’m so sorry that I have enjoyed your contents for a while but just now subscribing :).

    I pick up projects from client who do not organize their hard drives and Premiere Pro projects. The first thing I do after confirming all the assets are there is to go back to the hard drive and put everything into proper folders. I then restart the process to reassemble the Premiere Pro project so it sees all the folders. It's a hassle to do this, but the time spent before I start editing, especially with large projects, saves me time and confusion as I edit. On the Mac, Premiere does extremely well at automatically re-linking assets.
    One exception to your process is when I work on projects that have common assets (graphics, music, bumpers, AE renders, etc.) that I store in a separate location. I only make copies if I need to modify any of these assets for a specific project.

    Great video and yes, I always organise my project in one folder that's the first things I do.
    My Q is: what is the right Sequence setting for sony XAVC-S 4k (a6300) ? When I create Seq. from video the "Editing Mode" in Seq. Setting is "RED Cinema" !! with a moving camera or panning / tilting there is some kind of jerk or ghosting, It is not smooth (I'm not talking about: Rolling Shutter), I saw this in some videos in TH-cam and some aren't having this problem. (It is like repeated edges in slow motion) (Premiere Pro 2015.3 and SSD Drive).

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all, why haven't you updated to CC 2017?
      Premiere Pro does a "best guess" when choosing an Editing Mode when creating a Sequence that way - you can change it if you need. Is the ghosting showing up in your export?

    Colin!! I took your suggestion and came over to this video. I am pretty good at organizing things, but you have given me great tips to save a bit of time for sure. You said never have your current project on your desktop. I tend to drag my current project onto the desktop so I can easily drag and drop back and forth from other files, or things I have downloaded, during my editing. I store it away once I'm done and get it off the desktop. But why is it not good to work from the desktop?

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're constantly moving to and from the Desktop, those are extra steps. It's move advantageous to have a specific folder like Work, where you put your client/project folders in there. Now you have a single place where everything is. Even better, attach or add a second fast drive and put everything there.
      And the worse case is when someone saves the Premiere Pro Project file right on the Desktop. That's a recipe for disaster as Premiere Pro creates a specific set of folders for each project and mixing them up with cause things to fail.

  • @GBatB
    @GBatB 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Colin. Excellent tutorials. I've been editing for a while, but it is always good to compare notes even on the basics and I'm pleased my folder structure mirrors yours (except I have a specific 'Project' folder for my .ppr files). One big difference is you appear to import all the full clips into your project via media browser. I can see the reason the way you do that to create bins, but I always create my own bins and use media browser to cut a subclip(s) to import instead of the full file. Is there a specfic reason for importing the full clip files or is that just a choice thing?

    Hello Colin. Wonderful tips here about organizing material into bins. Thank you for this and all your kind and generous work.
    I am working on multiple interview projects at once. When reviewing source material for one film I l often want to put a certain subclip from it aside to combine with others for a completely different film I'm making. What is the best way to collect subclips as I go along? Can I have a running timeline that I just drop clips into? If I want to sync audio from my H5, should I do that first? I'd welcome your thoughts. Thank you!

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have a couple of choices:
      1. You can now open multiple Projects in Premiere Pro CC 2018 so just copy the Subclips from one Project to Another.
      2. Use the Pancake Timeline: th-cam.com/video/SCpowlt2lZc/w-d-xo.html
      Sync all your secondary audio first before making any Subclips.

    well damn. I thought I was so much more organized this time when I installed and started using premiere pro compared to how it was on my last computer, (sigh...) Prepare for a flood of thumbs ups, and watch time as I have just subbed, and will be going through all you're videos looking for the ones that will aid me in my learning the adobe softwares. I don't know if you'll still reply to a video this old, but I assume it isn't to late for me to go back and set things up in this manner? I have adobe production premium cs6 and just now have reasons to learn it all. I know there will be differences between the older software, and cc and I'm fine with that because even learning 70% of something is still better than 0%. I also wanted to mention that as a person doing research, i appreciate that you simply got to the point, and stayed on topic (There are far to many "how to" videos where the creator rambles on about things that have no bearing to the video) so thanks for that. Keep up the great work.

    Hi Collin, I have subscribed to your youtube channel and love your clean and non distracting video screens and your professional approach to teaching. I followed this video and made the folders and imported my clips and photos into Pr and I am using an external hard drive. But because of the ex drive, I am working offline when not connected. What is the best approach to bring them to my computer so I can un-tether from the external hard drive, I did not get that part in the videos. Please help. Thank you, Jack

      If you want to move the Project and media off the external drive, then just copy it to your computer. Once you open the project, Premiere Pro will prompt you to find the missing media and you just relink the first clip and it will find the rest.

    I keep project files in Dropbox - so I always have a backup.
    And also the finished videos are separate - because if I want to show or copy videos that are finished - it would take so much time to find them in these folders where there is also the original footage, graphics and so on. So I have a folder kind of "Finished Videos" and there are folders for each finished project. So there I can easily take files, I need to crab with me for a presentation or what ever.

    Good video! I've also indexed my folders. So I might have something like this (1.Footage, 2.Premiere, 3.AfterEffects, 4.Audition etc.)... Btw. there's one tool that has been super useful for video production and it's free. As it's name suggests (Bulk Rename Utility) you can rename files in bulk. For an example I was delivered 1Tb of footage from various locations. I used Bulk Rename Utility to add prefix of the location to each clip. Really useful to see something that useful in the filenime while editing. Maybe you could do a video about the BRU if you find it as useful yourself.

    Hey Colin. Which is your best video for me to understand the best way to start a project. Past this part. I am interested in Everthing Sequence. How to rename, how to find your lost project. Sometimes it seems PP has a way of showing up blank and it took me forever to find how to find my sequence to bring it back into my project. Also then is it best to make multi sequences in any given project etc etc on and on. That is where I need help.

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are finding that Sequences are missing, then there is something wrong or you're not saving your changes. Premiere Pro will never loose any media that has been successfully imported or created.
      I've put together a playlist for beginners: th-cam.com/play/PL6npGHFAQO7c3Jb5ajfXbnHG-HOBQAq2G.html
      Premiere Pro does not handle any computer file management, so it's up to you to create a workflow like the one in this tutorial. If you can't find something, then you'll know the first place to look.

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The word "smooth" could have different meanings; do you mean the frames playback with no problems or "jitter"?, or do you mean the transitions between the images are smooth, like using a Cross Dissolve?
      For smooth playback, you just pick the duration of the image and the frame size and frame rate of the Sequence. You can get good results by making the Sequence the same as your desired output, for instance standard HD to TH-cam 1080p. The size of the images are totally up to you as many smartphones take images larger than HD.
      If you're talking about smooth Cross Dissolve, then just apply the default Transition to all the images at once by using Cmd+D(Mac) Ctrl+D(Win).

    I spoke with an Adobe Engr Tech who was emphatic about only using the C Drive or Main drive on ones computer for all things Pr. I dont know if he was talking liability or what have you. I know what your saying here is total fact. Best thing is organization and know something about file structures. I moved things and had no idea about Pr being able to find files. But what was very odd was that even though my file system is similar to yours, Pr did not find a file it was looking for. Mainly because I flushed it per your performance video about exporting faster. lol So unfortunately it caused me problems but of my own making. Would you point me in the direction of your video on all the files Pr creates, where they are stored etc so if I DO MOVE things I know where to look if Pr cant seem to find them. I'm about to get my feet wet editing a reality show down from hundreds of hours of footage, multiple cameras + external audio. I've only worked on smaller projects so [i'm feeling a bit overwhelmed..] this tutorial helps get me ready. I noted you have organized MyProject/Video/Day1|Day2. Would you set up your audio using MyProject/Audio/Day1|Day2 as well, rather than putting the audio along side each day's video?

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm, that's a good question. It think it depends how busy each day's folder gets. If it's easy to look in there and find the right audio, then yes, put them all together in each day. If looking in there is confusing then make Video and Audio folders for each day.

  • @JoeBouscaren

    I am one to scatter stuff on the desktop so I love this tip. Question: I am planning to film for a project that may take weeks to complete. If I add video and audio folders to a “my project” folder on my storage drive ( as you describe) then add more files to these same video and audio folders as the many days go on, then each day when I go to import the additional files within the video and audio folders to Premier, will the already imported folders and files be ignored (ie not duplicated) and whatever is new be added to the original folder structure within Premier?

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. Premiere Pro does not know what's been added to the Desktop so you need to import all new footage. My suggestion is to put the new footage in a folder on the drive, then import that whole new folder into Premiere Pro. That way it will mirror the drive, but it has to be done manually.

    I wish I had watched this video before I started my project.
    I have been taking different videos on different days that are all for the same final video. Each day I bring the video into Premiere Pro, do some editing, then save it as a xxx.mp4 files. I also have made a lot of different graphic files and saved them as xxxx.jpg and the motion graphic files as xxxx.mp4 files. I had planned on continuing this way until I have all the content I need for the final video, and then assemble them into the final final.mp4 video. I have many different .mp4 files now. Is this the wrong way to run a project? The main reason I started processing this way was is so I could send a .mp4 video to my client following each shoot.
    Lawrence

    • @VideoRevealed
      @VideoRevealed  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The issue with that workflow is the quality of the video suffers. Each time you export in a compressed format, like .mp4, some of the data is tossed away. Now when you import that back in, then export again. you're throwing away more data.
      It's best to keep all the media in the original format that it was created in, so if your camera shoots mp4 files, then import them as such, but only export when you're ready to send something out.
      If you do need to export out a format, only to import it back in, then QuickTime Cineform is a good choice for that but your files will be much larger.

    Colin, Great advise. I already organize folders prior to my project, but have never loaded them into the Project folder. QUESTION: I completed a project recently that had over an hour of raw footage. In not wanting to bog my system down, nor carry the remnants afterwards, I placed all work material - raw footage, images, Adobe project files onto a jump drive. Is this something you'd recommend? I did notice that work actions were a bit sluggish and wasn't sure if it was because of that or the big video files on my processor. I did have 2 incidents where my screens went blank, and in one of them initiated a reboot of my system. I like the fact that I have a copy of my work and all files on removable media. Does doing it in that way effect things in that manner, do you know?

    • @VideoRevealed

    • @samsote

      i would suggest using "set to frame size" instead of "scale to frame size" as that only changes the scaling percentage in the clip effects.
      This way, if you want to scale up a clip later, you can do so without loosing quality.
      You can also go into the premiere settings and make it automatically set footage to the frame size when you drag it into the timeline, very good if you are working with a lot of 4k footage in a 1080p sequence.
