It is the only Mario Party game where you can lose coins in a mini game and the only Mario Party game where you can have Boo steal coins from opponents free of charge.
For those that don't know Mario Party 1 : If you land on a Bowser Space with a star and have no coins, he takes your star and gives you 10 coins. If everyone draws in "Bowser's Tug 'o' War : Everyone loses. Losing coins from minigames deducts from your minigame star. YES! You can end up in the negatives. Plenty of other things I'm missing, just ones I know from the top of my head.
Dice rolls are _Pre-determined._ That number rolling on your turn is just for show, its already decided for you. Its the same for the Mushroom space, it's already decided whether you're getting another turn to go or missing one entirely. MP1 is surprisingly and cleverly _balanced._ Minigames are zero sum keeping the number of coins in the game economy more under control allowing for easier balance. This means coins are very valuable and it makes choices. EDIT: Forgot that you can also lose coins and go into the negatives. Yes. you can have negative coins if you keep losing minigames and step on every red space.
And that's why I love it. It's harsh but really keeps you on your toes, making it the most rewarding mario party ever. I really hate that every other mario party afterwards went soft and I especially dislike superstars because of how easy and free everything is (as far as the good mario party goes at least)

1 is way more, due to how unbalanced the boards and minigames are, Coin Shower Flower is the most bullshit thing i have seen for what is supposed to be a coin mini-game The worst have to be the 1v3 minigames, for example in Bash n Cash the sole player literally wins nothing and can only lose

Mario Party 1 and 3 are my most played in the series. 1 is definitely the most unkind though, with taking coins from people for losing games, and Bowser just being horrible. But then in Mario Party 3, sometimes you'll land on Game Guy with over 100 coins and the game will be fixed for you to lose so you end up with 0. Modern games just want the worst players to win so they don't feel bad about themselves.

You should absolutely try to unlock everything in the game, it's an even more chaotic experience once you've gotten everything at the shop. Warp blocks that count as the full turn, dice blocks that give you or take away coins, and hidden blocks that might randomly contain Bowser in them?? Mario Party 1 is special.
Hidden blocks can also contain Boo in them which can be absolutely game changing. My favorite of the items is definitely the warp block though. It always manages to mentally destroy someone at least once per game just by doing its thing.
I hope you guys continue to play this game, so you can unlock the extra boards and purchase the bonus dice that will *RANDOMLY* appear throughout the game once purchased.
I think all the original N64 Mario Party games were all like this. The random mean-spirited sadistic sociopathy was what made it so fun. You could be winning the whole time and then some random ass dice roll happens on the last turn to make you lose. It made for an outrageous party game because anything could happen. You guys do a great job capturing the spirit of the game in this video.
Mario Party 1 is basically Hudson Soft throwing random ideas at a wall and seeing what stuck. Though, it is probably the most cruel of all Mario Parties. Between losing coins in mini-games, stick-rotating games, and other coin-sapping events, it is just a bit rough. Mario Party 2 and Mario Party 3 were major improvements to the Mario Party formula. Granted, I actually kind of liked the 4-player cooperative games. It was an interesting change of pace to have to work together.

It really IS. Some of the maps are setup to where nobody gets a star until practically the last turn... Which happened to me yesterday. I was on the DK map, and the star was on the far left side and anytime anyone got close someone hit a ? And the rock sent everyone in the path back to start. I finally got a star on turn 18. On turn 19 a cpu stole it.

The literal story of this game is Mario and his friends are openly discussing who is objectively the best person out of all of them, and then settle the discussion with a board game. Sure, because that's totally what friends typically do. Heck, me and the boys do that every week.
Plus, it caused people to injure the palm of their hands doing the minigames that required rotating the control stick (thus causing a lawsuit and why the NSO re-release of this game has to has a warning added when you start the game).

I feel like the change in MarioParty over the year is that at first the game showed you no mercy but with time it gave you the option to show your friends no mercy.
Fun fact about this game is that the game decides all of the rolls at the beginning pf the game, so even if you reset you will still get the same rolls, making your only influence minigames and the few decisions you get on the board (bonus stars too i think)
Not quite correct. It determines it at the beginning of the round not at the very start. So you could still get a different roll depending on when you saved.
They do keep getting better too for the 64, glad you got to play 1 before 2 cause you’ll definitely see the jump in progress and 3 for me at least is the best one!

I just realized: the character models in this game has hilariously disproportionate sizes. Peach is smaller than normal, Wario is taller than normal, and DK is freakin' TINY in this game. But yeah, this game definitely suffers from first game syndrome. Brutal in every sense of the word in needless spots.
I still play Mario Party 1. And yeah this is a trend I noticed with most game series. They get easier and "nicer" as time goes on. Like modern games are afraid to be challenging, but it's also like they don't want anyone to lose anymore, because they don't want anyone to feel bad, even if they *ARE* bad. Nowadays games are like "You're in last? Here, take this and win so you don't feel like a loser. Sorry the person who actually played the best has to lose though".

I still play Mario Party 1. And yeah this is a trend I noticed with most game series. They get easier and "nicer" as time goes on. Like modern games are afraid to be challenging, but it's also like they don't want anyone to lose anymore, because they don't want anyone to feel bad, even if they *ARE* bad. Nowadays games are like "You're in last? Here, take this and win so you don't feel like a loser. Sorry the person who actually played the best has to lose though".
I mean sure, but even compared to Mario Party 2, the first game is WAY more frustrating just because of how bullshit it is

This and Mario party 2 and 3 were and still are the ultimate friend and family ruiners. So many damaged controllers and fights broke out with my nephews because of these games

This game had the bright idea to have 11 out of its 50 mini games be single player for some reason, you know Mario party, the game you never play by yourself.
