Depends. Smoke detector is useless for a 3D printer. It would shut it down when it doesn't need to be shut down. However this could detect when something actually goes wrong and then shut off power to the printer.
The reason you detect the smoke is because any part of the house can be on fire and it will detect it, this has to be right where the fire is, so on average half the house could burn down before this detects it.

Now, this would require a little bit of extra thought n engineering (what if u wanted it off, but its the middle of a sunny day/not in a dark area [closet, basement, etc]), but still a GREAT & simple little circuit! Great for beginners to make and experiment with; or even for those more experienced looking to make simple detectors for optics experiments, or a part of other more complex projects & circuits.
Best of all, you can't even see the fire through opaque smoke. This thing would be set off by just about anything (including TV remotes and sunlight) but _not_ by a smoke-heavy fire.

"Triac" uses a TIP41C NPN power transistor... and this is simply an infrared detector. Sin't detect smoke, will only detect an active fire near it
I can never tell the difference between a NPN transistor and a MOSFET.

You can just dip it in some coating to avoid shorts, but it's not dangerous in the first place because it's low voltage DC.

Fire might be deadly since it hurts and can be seen, but smoke is deadlier because it often doesn't get noticed and you often can see (in) it.
