You know, I think that Jack actually was killed by the tire, and that Ennis just imagines that it was a hate crime because of his own childhood trauma. To Ennis, who always feared the physical danger their relationship could put them in, hearing that Jack had died suddenly would have felt like a nightmare coming true, no matter how he died. If Lureen had known about Jack's sexual leanings, I think it would have been swept under the rug, rich folks style.

I think she's far too cold and detached towards Ennis in this phone call for me to fully believe that Jack died from this accident with the tire. Or at the very least, her demeanor towards Ennis means that at the very least, she knows some form of the truth about him and Jack.
@@MH-bw9ztthis probably isn’t new knowledge so apologies if that’s the case but they actually filmed two versions of Laureen’s phonecall with Ennis; one where she knew and one where she didn’t know. In the film, they used scenes from both takes to intentionally make whether she knew or not ambiguous.
My favourite scene was near the end when they had their last encounter, starting in anger and then transforming to a tortured, poignant embrace. Very powerful stuff.

This is one of the most heart felt movies I've ever watched. I belive I was in 8th grade when this came out and I watched it with two friends. We're all straight and after the movie I learned a lot about both those guys that day. I learned they had a lot of growing up to do.
This was the first movie I think that really opened up eyes to gay relationships. At least the first major film I can think of. Although I'm a straight man I felt the emotions in this movie between these men. This movie really shows you how love is love no matter what or who it is between. The portrayal of a masculine man in America was all over this movie and showed you even the most tough, hardened, bad ass men can still be gay and it doesn't make you any less of a man.
Everything about this movie is perfect one of the best of all time. This is a perfect movie. You guys covered this beautifully.

Brokeback mtn is one of the most heartbreaking and tragic love stories that I have ever watched. I cried for the Plight of the two men living their lives for the one time a year they could manage time together.The acting was so amazing.

I think one thing neither of you understand about this movie is, both Ennis and Jack were only 19 years old that first summer on Brokeback Mountain, and Ennis was a virgin. There are no other women for Ennis, Alma was the only girl he ever dated, prior to that first summer. Jack was the risk taker, Ennis was the reserved one, even though he was the top. No one knows what truly happened to Jack. The scene we see is Ennis projecting his childhood trauma onto the circumstances of Jack's death.
I think that since it cuts from Hathaway to the murder scene, it’s her point of view knowing what really happened

I haven't seen a movie that has moved me in a way this film has. The movie leaves you with a feeling which doesn't go away. I think Growing up mostly alone is what makes an individual so reserved struggling to express his feelings and when you are surrounded by hostile people, it pushes you to hide your feelings and to project a different personality leaving you isolated with doubt, apprehension and guilt. This is painful when you cannot allow people to get closer although you want it. I can understand the character of Ennis to the core, why he was the way he is shown. This was such a painful yet beautiful story. Like a needle that progress slowly into the heart and in the end leaves a scar that takes longer to heal.

It hits hard just like the first time i saw it.
Best scene was the collapse of Ennis after the "i wish i could quit you" line
When he is blaming Jack.
"You made me like this, I'm nothing, I'm noone"
Heart breaking and really sums up the difficulties gay people have in love because of societal norms that are placed upon them.

Yes, one of the most emotionally devastating films ever made--in any category. Thanks for the in-depth analysis. One correction: if you read Annie Proulx's short story, you'll see that it begins in 1963, not 1967. I feel a personal connection (yeah, I know it's fiction) because Jack and Ennis meet in June 1963, the month I was born.

I hated Ennis for what he did to his family by using them as a cover but when I saw his reason for it I mostly just felt bad for him. He had to go so far to make his cover convincing because he could be killed otherwise. Even if he left everyone alone to live with Jack in peace people would come to kill him for simply being himself. That easily also explains why he was so awkward socially and lonely. If you knew this since you were a child you would prefer isolation because it would be safest in such a barbaric and cruel world, that's how you would develop. You would also feel the need to be violent in such a world to defend yourself in case isolation wasn't enough.

I get the feeling that Jack legitimately got tired of living a lie and so he didn't after a while. Ennis was different what he had seen such terrible violence from a very young age just just got into his head and he couldn't he couldn't let go.I watched the show a couple of months back -- Roswell New Mexico 2019 Four Seasons.there was a guy Alex (Tyler Blackburn)like that he had a lot of internalized homophobia.I mean he didn't get married or anyting but he practically ruined his relationship with the guy he loved. So basically he comes back after being gone for 10 the show spans five years total ascended this year. And I ended a good place it just shouldn't have taken 15 years to do it. They went from 17 and kind clueless to 30 31 and still kind of Clueless but at least they got together which was nice. have bought a clue but they didn't.
But I used to make a joke but it was like Brokeback Mountain but oh my God a way better end.
If you like bisexual representation and you like this you might like Roswell New Mexico. One of the lead characters Michael is bisexual and his love interest main love interest is Alex who's gay.
Michael's sister also comes out as a bisexual later.. interesting stuff that it's on Netflix and Amazon Prime but I've seen other places too. Four Seasons so far it might get picked up by Netflix let's hope so cuz CW is cutting most of their shows and and starting over with new ones. That blows man. But anyway it does have happy ending. (For Michael and Alex and for other characters in the show)

You both bisected the film so thoroughly, well done. I could never do reviews because I get so emotionally involved in the characters. I'd love to see your take on "Soldiers Girl" 2003. A true story starring Lee Pace (the Elven King in LOTR) and Troy Garity (Jane Fonda's son). It aired on Showtime. One of the most emotional scenes in the movie, to me, is when Ennis goes to Jack's parents and Jack's mother tells him to go up to his bedroom then wraps the shirt and gives it to him.

And I mean, I fuck with Ludacris (as a musician), so no serious diss to him, but NOTHING should have beaten Brokeback that year.
Wow amazing job boy great episode. I definitely feel the same way about the movie as you do I remember putting it aside to watch until I finally decided to watch it because j love both actors and i was surprised with such a great casting because we saw Anne Hathaway, David Harbor, Kate Mara and linda Cardellini apart from Jake and Heath. The ending had me shocked that jack died the way he did and the way a the end Ennis finally learns to make time for the ones he loves which is a important character ark for him. Its one of those movies I definitely cried and on my top 10

Could you please talk about Warrior (2011). I recently watched it for the first time and now I'm convinced it was one of the best movies of the decade. It may be my favorite of all time, but I'll have to let it age a little more in my head. Also how was it not nominated for an oscar in 2012?

Just watched Brokeback Mountain for the first time, so naturally I had to listen to the pod and enjoyed your analysis.
I came away with some things differently though and am curious on your thoughts.
I came away thinking that Jack really did die by accident and that the shot of him being beaten was just what Ennis imagined. The whole movie he is paranoid that he would be killed if people found out, so he instinctively assumed that is how Jack really died.
And I don’t think Laureen knew about Jack until her conversation with Ennis. I think she came to a realization when Ennis told her that he and Jack first met at Brokeback, and that is why she started to tear up.
But I like how it is ambiguous, and that we came away with two different conclusions.
So she does say that she knows they’re more than fishing buddies, I think she even said humping buddies. For Jack’s death, I think that Lee portrayed the danger they were always in at any given time, and Jack was often too visible and ostentatious so I think that’s what got him killed as opposed to an accident

its at the end he keeps his jacket and swears to god with tears in his eyes. very powerful they had true love. ive had a long distance relationship and it hurts bad just like both characters experienced and its heart breaking. wonderful flick. tell me a movie where two people love each other this much? its not about two gay guys, its about two people in love.

Heath Ledger’s performance was just at another level, with Jake you see him trying to sound like he’s someone else, with Heath, you can’t tell (and he’s from Australia!). I didn’t see Heath Ledger the actor, I only saw his character.
The way the movie captures the culture of the place is just amazing, I live in the Midwest and my husband’s family are from a small town, his uncle, his father, they’re just like some of these characters, closed off, not a lot of words, lots of drinking. It’s really striking particularly when you come from a different country and culture.
The only bone I have to pick with the movie is the sex scene in the tent. C’mon, from someone who actually does these things, that was tough for poor ole Jack Twist, not even the most experienced bottom can take something like that with so little prep, and it wouldn’t have gone in so easily, unless Ennis was very small, which from the nude scenes, didn’t seem to be the case.

The movie is tremendously well. It Launched many discussions back then it is almost two decades ago. Back then many hated the movie for humanising homosexual love I think because it shows smth totally different as this flamboyant almost alien homosexual love. It shows something which could happen next door and so brought the topic very close to ordinary ppl in middle sized or small towns/cities. And I think this closeness is what made this tremendous impact. I think this movie is one of the best to help the gay community showing its more as "faggish colorful birds" and especially depicts the human tradegy when a society sabotages love. I associate it with Romeo and Juliet as variation of the forbidden love.

Ennis's inability to show his emotions, and the only thing he can do is violence when he's scared, or angry, or sad, or any emotion, is kind of explained by the way his father treats him. Like, his father thought it was appropriate to bring a 9 year old child to see the body of a murdered gay man. Either as a, "you must also murder anyone that's different" or as a "you better not be gay, or else". Or both probably. Anyway, Ennis's father clearly thinks murder is totally fine. That does not inspire confidence in his parenting skills.
I'm told there's also a deleted scene where Ennis essentially explains that his dad taught him to solve all his problems with violence. It's all he knows. I haven't seen that deleted scene, but it would make sense from what else we know about that dad.
Heath Ledger didn't want to make jokes about Brokeback mountain, because he thought it wasn't appropriate. Honestly, considering the type of jokes people made about being gay, I agree with him. It's one thing to make jokes about a drama, but if the jokes are actually making fun of gay people, that's another story.
How Jack dies is vague on purpose. It is ambiguous in the short story as well. It could be that Ennis's trauma is what makes him imagine the hate crime, but it's also possible that Jack was murdered by homophobes. Ennis, and we, can never be sure what happened. Lorreen is telling Ennis the public story. Being gay was illegal in all 50 states until 1962. As in the goverment would lock you up for being gay. In Texas there are still laws on the books that criminalise certain sex acts. By which they mean anything not hetero. So while Jack might (and that's debatable) not be arrested for being gay, Lorreen certainly wouldn't want to tell just anyone, if she even knew exactly what happened. She and her family would probably face a lot of social repercussions if Jack's sexuality became public knowledge.
Ennis doesn't just reject Jack because he's unable to open up, he's afraid. His fear of being murdered for being gay is not some vague, unfounded fear he just needs to get over. It's a very real risk he and Jack would face if they were to live together.
A few of my favourite shots are the wide shots of the landscape with the hills criss crossing the frame, sheep on one hill, and the people as tiny dots in the landscape. Ang Lee did similar things in Sense and Sensibility, the diagonal lines of hills, or hedgerows (in S&S) and fences, etc.

I personally have nothing against masculinity because I believe machismo and masculinity are different from each other. No matter how many times I've watched this movie, I'd cry my heart out. Even going into this review, I almost faint thinking about the ending. It's one of those rare occasions where I'm watching this love story about soulmates finding each other and realizing the impossibility of ever being together. I think that's why it's such a tragic but beautiful story. I really like your review
