One thing you really need is an air bypass system, so you can send the air from your compressor section straight into the turbo. You can use that to mix combustion air with bypass air to cool it, and run it at full bypass with your starter running to cool the turbine section after you shut it down. That will also prevent all of the exhaust gases from catching fire.

Yep, you're absolutely correct, we need to be able to regulate the amount of air that bypasses the burn chamber.

Just curious because I’m no turbo expert. Why do they let the turbo spool up for short periods of time and then close it off? Why not go wide open for like a minute and see what it can do? Does it die out of you give it too much air? Or is it more of a risk of the tank blowing up or something like that?

it just would destroy it self

    Read about turbo-props.
Take another "driven" turbo section and put a reduction gearbox and pulley on it. Connect it to your existing exhaust outlet.

Far easier said than done, but we are working on it!

Putting a power turbine to the exhaust isn't difficult, but connecting up the shaft that is turning at ridiculous speeds is very challenging.

@@Stoney3K Probably the big trick there would be to use the exhaust side of a giant turbo, like from a Semi-tractor and lose a little impeller speed, but at least you would have a larger more heavy-duty output shaft to couple onto. Still going to need around a 500:1 or so reduction gearbox.

Have you thought about a throttle body on the front of the cold side? Let you make small adjustments to the "idle" for a consistent burn?
