For a 136, that body is in awesome condition! Have a soft spot for the Abumatics. My grandfather and his son, my uncle, fished an Abumatic 40, now owned by cousin's husband who will not sell. Everytime I start talking about reels, he stops me and says, "No"
    😂

I love finding reels most people haven't seen before and going through them. The oddball stuff is what I love. However, they are my least watched videos. Most people don't watch because they are curious about the old reels. They just want to see how to fix their specific reel. That said, I'll keep trying to make videos of both kinds of reels.

@@youngmartinsreels5314 I have several Abu 120s and the 136 is VERY similar. I find the more you understand about similar models, the easier it is to service your own. I still have and use my original Garcia Mitchell 300 and 302 , Penn 500 Jigmaster and Monofil from the early 60's. I also have a Shakespeare 1777 that i love. Keep up the good work.

Rick I have the same reel and a video of it on my channel
Yours is missing part number 4505
    It's the handle lock nut
It's just an end cap that is screwed on to the shaft before the drag knob
Mine was missing as well when I got the reel but I had one in my parts stash
I don't think it's essential for the reel
The reel came out in 1969 from what I can tell
I love those old abumatic reels
They are so smooth and well made
I think they are much better than johnson and zebcos as well
If you ever see an abumatic 150 get it
    It's one of my favorites
    I really enjoyed your video

I can see that you are correct that mine is missing the nut that would prevent the drag knob from coming off the crankshaft accidentally. Good catch!
Abumatic reels have a strong following of faithful users. I didn’t grow up using them, so the drag system feels awkward to me. I’ve tried fishing them a few times but I just can’t get the feel for the crankshaft drag system. I feel that way about any spin cast reel with that type of drag. Lots of people prefer that set up, I’m just not one of them. I’m glad you liked the video. I’ll try to make a video of every different model of Abumatic that I can get my hands on. Keep on fishing your Abumatics and Fish On!

      @youngmartinsreels5314 Thanks Rick
Yes they definitely have a unique drag system
It's called a syncro drag system
After setting the drag, if you turn the handle backwards about a half turn the drag goes to half then when you start cranking it goes back to initial setting
Where I live they is only one kind of fish and that is trout and they aren't big
I've been fishing for all my life and not once have I used a drag on one of my reels
I just use 6 or 8 pound test and haul them in!

If you were ever lucky enough to hook a really big fish and had to have the presence of mine to reverse the handle every time he hit hard and attempted to make a run, you might rethink that drag. I’m don’t think fast enough when fighting a big fish to remember to reverse the handle when that happens. I’m pretty sure I’d loose that big fish.
I have an Abumatic 170 sitting on the shelf that failed recently. Maybe I’ll open it up and do a video on what happened. I believe I had serviced it so whatever happened, it was probably my fault. Fish On!
