i love the fact that gordon doesn't even seem mad about benrey being back. he's just like "welp. shoulda expected that i guess." and then jokes with him. it's so good.
wayne says baaulp's acting after gordon loses his arm made it seem like tommy was also going to betray gordon, but i always interpreted it as tommy just being so confused and not even understanding what had happened that the severity of the situation didn't register with him. and i interpreted tommy pulling a gun after gordon asked if he could trust him as tommy's way of saying "yeah, i've got your back! i can protect you! i'm a great shot!" (and it's not like he had reason to fear for his own safety, since his dad is gman)
Both interpretations could be possible, in a way - Gordon could interpret Tommy's odd behavior as Tommy plotting to backstab him later, while Tommy genuinely means well but doesn't know how to convey it. Adds a little more complexity to the situation!
Hearing Wayne admit he had a panic attack mid stream but kept going on with the act just so he didn't disappoint was so sad. This man tries so hard to keep us entertained.
The skeleton is future Gordon, who is Benrey's friend. That's why Benrey, who doesn't understand the concept of time, thinks Gordon is his friend from the first time Gordon meets him. It also explains why the skeleton's passport, when presented to Gordon, says "You".
This is such a good theory but I also love the implication that Gordon inadvertently murders his own future self multiple times (and that for some reason Future Him sounds like Benrey 💀💀💀)
I'd like to think that all of Dr.Coomer's processing power is spread out among each interval of Coomer, and that certain Coomer clones kill each other for more RAM.
My headcanon: Coomer's ability to feel EVERYTHING his clones felt is him saying he felt not just their pain, but their emotions too. Their hatred and rage, and their sinister desire to wriggle inside of Dr. Freeman in order to escape. The more clones that are in his proximity, the stronger his true eldritch nature becomes, and the more of it is revealed to everyone. In short: It's only ever safe to be around Dr. Coomer when he's alone. It would explain why he stopped going berserk when his army of clones were completely killed. Almost as if the concentration of clones were creating a massive feedback loop of Coomer's stream of consciousness, infinitely amplifying his insanity.
My headcanon for Benrey has always been he's just some stoner security guard who's trying to do his job but he's so goddamn faded and out of it that he can't properly speak or even remember he is or what he's doing. When the resonance cascade happened, it affected him more than anyone else by giving his inhuman superpowers that he uses to harass Gordon for his passport, the only thing he can remember how to do. I dunno why but, as antagonistic as Benrey seemed, he never came off as like. Malicious. He just seemed really stupid and completely lucid and I was expecting the end to be Gordon just handing him his passport and then everything'd just go back to normal.
yeah he never came off as intentionally malicious to me when i first watched it lol. just seemed like he was constantly out of it. man fried my brain but i also love this interpretation too

One of the main times I can think of is when there was a scientist on the floor and Benery tries to shoot him and then he's like "oh I forgot this is one of our holograms" then Coomer just like fucking decks him off of the thing and you hear Benery laugh.
It's almost like after his death he reflected on what he did and realized he mistoke gordon for his friend and is desperately trying to make up. However he is still a little angry at being killed so he comes off as passive aggressive. Or maybe he just wants to piss Gordon off instead of killing him. After all, he is a gamer and would be no stranger to Trolling.
Gordon in the opening sequence not only doesnt flush the toilet, but also doesnt put *it* back in his pants, touches his face, and doesn't wash his hands before bringing food to the rest of the group (also after grabbing something else out of a different toilet)

I like how it's pointed out a lot in this act, but the subtitles are one of my favourite things about HLVRAI. Not only are they done well (with no intentional mis-subtitles for the sake of a joke, which is a BIG thing in most online productions), but they're distinct and easy to tell apart. The font choice also makes it more obvious about who's talking, which I love. But the way they're used for visual gags is my favourite thing - particularly matching the location of a character and being cut off when the character goes behind doors. The subtitles can still be read without pausing, which is the best thing, and I like how they're played around with a bit in the medium, while still maintaining accessibility.
I love the idea of Coomer hearing Tommy talk about wanting to drink out of batteries, and just pausing for a moment, eyes wide with confusion, and responding with "They're...not soda." I love these singular moments of lucidity, as they said, of the AI just not processing some bizarre shit another npc said, and refusing to accept it despite all the weird shit they've accepted
I like how some viewers are surprised that the characters in this series break the fourth wall or do stupid things. The main premise of the series is that the fourth wall is broken and the characters are AI.

I'm really hoping for that. I'm not really sure how they'll work with HL2 though, it's a lot heavier on the scripted sequences and reliance on named NPCs.
Rhas 'Churol what they could do(this is just an idea) is make versions of the map with less or no scripted sequences in it. You’d need the big ones(the teleported sequence, the GMAN stuff, etc), but a lot of the minor interactions could be changed or altered in some way.
@@tenacityxl replacing the scripted sequences with their own semi-scripted sequences could work, especially in regards to when Gman appears. I’m just wondering how they’ll handle stuff like the vehicle levels.

Huh, I never made that connection. In my defense, G-Man refers to Gordon as "Mr. Freeman" in the real games so it didn't seem out of place to me and Tommy has the mindset of a child, and I'm also used to children referring to adults as "Mr./Mrs. [name]" so that also didn't seem out of place.

@@Gyovali I've mostly seen unflushed toilets in schools, even college. Some people just sometimes forget to flush. I think its especially a problem in school because a student could have a bunch of things on their mind and one of them not being to flush. I've caught myself doing it a few times as embarrassing as that sounds for the reason that I had a bunch of other stuff on my mind. Another reason that some students forget to flush is their time limit of being there. Maybe the teacher only gave them 2 minutes and their rushing along trying to get back to class on time.

Two things: BENREY'S BACK, and he is immediately the best Benrey he can be. And second, I actually find it very inspiring how Wayne powered through a panic attack to give us the rest of Act 3. I obviously wish he didn't have to have one to begin with, but as someone with Anxiety who, even with my medication, occasionally still suffers from panic attacks, seeing someone push through to provide more content to one of the best TH-cam series of the last year (or even longer) is an inspiration. Keep doing good work, Wayne!
I have asperger's syndrome and can't bring myself to start a conversation on my own. I also take medication for my anxiety so i can agree that Wayne being able to continue even with a panic attack is amazing.
1:08:07 People acted much the same with Freeman's Mind where they failed to understand that the series wasn't a LP. It was just a machinima where the guy is playing a character and using cheats where ever he felt helped to make things progress smoother or make progress more interesting.
The game is not the focus, the game is the stage. The game is the theatre, and the players are players both in an actor and gamer sense. It would be incredibly interesting and could probably blossom into an artstyle of its own but also it's so fucking niche that almost nobody even tries it
This all kind of thing is pretty weird by itself since meta-narrative suggests that Gordon is just playing some game where he is named by NPCs as Gordon (every time you go to sleep I can feel my body ripped atom by atom = every time you shut the game I feel it) so it's kind of like some guy just playing half-life but at the same time he is embodying the character? Idk, this whole series is just blend of roleplay and meta-narrative in a unique and unhinged way which is still awesome.
I love that "the HL:AI crew is going to get back together and rob a bank!" Was an offhand joke that ACTUALLY happened in a stream later, when they played Payday with HL models.
Everybody gives the Dr. Coomer and Benrey bossfights all the credit. But nobody ever talks about The Helicopter Heap. The Helicopter Heap doesn't have a kickass fan made boss theme.
I just noticed how well the main group fits into the five-man-band trope. Gordon's the leader (makes most decisions, corrals the group towards a single goal) Bubby's the lancer (challenges the team's ideas, though mainly Gordon's.) Coomer's the big-guy (When he gets back on Gordon's side, it's a relief. Coomer's reliability in combat protects everybody.) And Tommy is the Heart. (Everybody wants to keep him safe and likes him a lil bit, causing everybody to stick together.) Only trope that's missing is the Smart Guy, but it's fine since EVERYBODY here is a smart guy- they're theoretical physicists. You guys made a masterpiece of character dynamics completely on the fly
What's also sad with the skeleton being "You" is that it can also be interpreted as Benrey making up that he has friends and making these skeletons to not seem like a liar, but in the end they’re just him.

I've always loved lines like that in fiction, like movie characters going, "This isn't some movie! This is real life!" because, in the moment that I'm watching it, I'm like, "Yea, you tell them!" then something in my hindbrain goes, "Well... actually...."

My headcanon: Coomer's ability to feel EVERYTHING his clones felt is him saying he felt not just their pain, but their emotions too. Their hatred and rage, and their sinister desire to wriggle inside of Dr. Freeman in order to escape. The more clones that are in his proximity, the stronger his true eldritch nature becomes, and the more of it is revealed to everyone. In short: It's only ever safe to be around Dr. Coomer when he's alone.
It would explain why he stopped going berserk when his army of clones were completely killed. Almost as if the concentration of clones were creating a massive feedback loop of Coomer's stream of consciousness, infinitely amplifying his insanity.

My headcanon for Benrey has always been he's just some stoner security guard who's trying to do his job but he's so goddamn faded and out of it that he can't properly speak or even remember he is or what he's doing. When the resonance cascade happened, it affected him more than anyone else by giving his inhuman superpowers that he uses to harass Gordon for his passport, the only thing he can remember how to do.
I dunno why but, as antagonistic as Benrey seemed, he never came off as like. Malicious. He just seemed really stupid and completely lucid and I was expecting the end to be Gordon just handing him his passport and then everything'd just go back to normal.
So he is Barney but warped, I love that concept so much

Benrey's bathroom shenanigans are just mild, passive-aggressive attempts at revenge for his death.
It's almost like after his death he reflected on what he did and realized he mistoke gordon for his friend and is desperately trying to make up. However he is still a little angry at being killed so he comes off as passive aggressive. Or maybe he just wants to piss Gordon off instead of killing him. After all, he is a gamer and would be no stranger to Trolling.

I like how it's pointed out a lot in this act, but the subtitles are one of my favourite things about HLVRAI. Not only are they done well (with no intentional mis-subtitles for the sake of a joke, which is a BIG thing in most online productions), but they're distinct and easy to tell apart. The font choice also makes it more obvious about who's talking, which I love. But the way they're used for visual gags is my favourite thing - particularly matching the location of a character and being cut off when the character goes behind doors. The subtitles can still be read without pausing, which is the best thing, and I like how they're played around with a bit in the medium, while still maintaining accessibility.

My theory is after the commentary series we are gonna go straight into HL2, and the movie theater is where they all where for 20 years
I'm really hoping for that. I'm not really sure how they'll work with HL2 though, it's a lot heavier on the scripted sequences and reliance on named NPCs.
Rhas 'Churol what they could do(this is just an idea) is make versions of the map with less or no scripted sequences in it. You’d need the big ones(the teleported sequence, the GMAN stuff, etc), but a lot of the minor interactions could be changed or altered in some way.

Huh, I never made that connection. In my defense, G-Man refers to Gordon as "Mr. Freeman" in the real games so it didn't seem out of place to me and Tommy has the mindset of a child, and I'm also used to children referring to adults as "Mr./Mrs. [name]" so that also didn't seem out of place.

@@Gyovali I've mostly seen unflushed toilets in schools, even college. Some people just sometimes forget to flush. I think its especially a problem in school because a student could have a bunch of things on their mind and one of them not being to flush. I've caught myself doing it a few times as embarrassing as that sounds for the reason that I had a bunch of other stuff on my mind. Another reason that some students forget to flush is their time limit of being there. Maybe the teacher only gave them 2 minutes and their rushing along trying to get back to class on time.

Gordon's announcing of his moves was always one of my favorite parts of Wayne's Gordon.
Two things: BENREY'S BACK, and he is immediately the best Benrey he can be.
And second, I actually find it very inspiring how Wayne powered through a panic attack to give us the rest of Act 3. I obviously wish he didn't have to have one to begin with, but as someone with Anxiety who, even with my medication, occasionally still suffers from panic attacks, seeing someone push through to provide more content to one of the best TH-cam series of the last year (or even longer) is an inspiration. Keep doing good work, Wayne!

Idk, this whole series is just blend of roleplay and meta-narrative in a unique and unhinged way which is still awesome.
I love that "the HL:AI crew is going to get back together and rob a bank!" Was an offhand joke that ACTUALLY happened in a stream later, when they played Payday with HL models.

Coomer's the big-guy (When he gets back on Gordon's side, it's a relief. Coomer's reliability in combat protects everybody.)
And Tommy is the Heart. (Everybody wants to keep him safe and likes him a lil bit, causing everybody to stick together.)
Only trope that's missing is the Smart Guy, but it's fine since EVERYBODY here is a smart guy- they're theoretical physicists.

I've always loved lines like that in fiction, like movie characters going, "This isn't some movie! This is real life!" because, in the moment that I'm watching it, I'm like, "Yea, you tell them!" then something in my hindbrain goes, "Well... actually...."
