Fast, light tonguing on bass clarinet - So you want to be a Bass Clarinet player

  • News flash. There are different ways to articulate tongued notes on a single-reed instrument!
    Truth is, your tongue doesn't always have to hit the same place on the reed when you're tonguing something with an accent vs. 16th notes at 120BPM. On bass clarinet I would argue that it SHOULDN'T hit the same place.
    Watch and see what I mean.

    Great stuff! I had the same problem tonguing at certain tempos and not others - exactly the same as you mentioned. LOL
    When I play saxophone I move the tongue around to different spots on the reed depending on register and what kind of timbre I a going for. Much the same as you describe here. I have often considered the Bass Clarinet embouchure as a hybrid between clarinet and sax - with some unique things all its own.

    One thing he said briefly is really important, and I wish I had practiced it more when I was younger: touch the reed, but don’t stop the vibrations of the reed very much. You need to be able to dampen the vibrations of the reed almost not at all to stopping them completely with only just enough pressure on the reed, plus every shade of gray in between. That takes a lot of practice because you’re dealing with very small quantities. Patience and persistence help the process.

    • @williamrappaport9203
      @williamrappaport9203 ปีที่แล้ว

      Practicing the end of the spectrum where you almost are not stopping the vibrations of the reed at all is the one to spend a lot of time on.

    Few questions??
    What type of bass clarinet reeds do you recommend?What strength of reed do you play on?
    Do you use any certain practice books to warm up with? If not what do you do to warm up?
    What type or brand of ligature do you recommend?
    (I have a a Buffet Crampon Prestige series if that makes a difference.)
    Does the brand of mouthpiece matter? If so what do you prefer or recommend?
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    • @autumnmaxwell1018
      @autumnmaxwell1018 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dawson Shoemake mouthpiece does matter! You'll have to research the best kind but getting a new one could improve your sound quite a bit! Ligature doesn't matter that much but even if it did you have a great brand. Vandoren v12 are nice reeds in whatever strength you prefer (I use 3)

      Strength of the reed depends on your airflow, embrochure and other factors. Don’t jump into a 3 or a 4 reed if you’re a beginner on bass clarinet from clarinet with lungs that haven’t adjusted.

      To warm up, you can use anything like scales or chorales. You don’t need to play something like flight of the bumblebee as a warmup. You’re overthinking it, it’s just a warm up- you’re warming up your instrument not impressing someone

    For our UIL March this year, our band director chose Salute to Kansas by Sousa, and even after months of practicing, my section was the only one to correctly play and tongue the opening measures...you bet articulation is important! And there's that bit of smug satisfaction when soprano clarinet has to slur their part while bass clarinet plays as isXD

    Hi Michael my name is Nikolai Morales I'm 12 years old. I'm been watching your TH-cam videos for about a year and a half now. I was wondering if you can make a video on how to play the flight of the bumblebee. I to play bass clarinet and I also play on Vandoren products. Since I've been watching your video I've got really inspired by your techniques.

    As a bassoon and flute player, my articulations on clarinet become very strange. Switching from bassoon, I tongue on the tip only (i can get reeeeeaaallly good nuance) but with the flute I end up tonguing even further back on the roof of my mouth.
