Hello, I’m currently writing a closing for prosecution, where a lady killed her husband after being abused. The defense in arguing that the abuse lead her to act out of desperation, where we the prosecution are trying to make the point that the abuse doesn’t justify her killing her husband, to simply it. It’s the U.S. v. Dominique Stephens case if you’re familiar with it. Do you have any advice on what sort of story I should tell for it? I’m having trouble coming up with one that feels effective.
I know you might not reply to this, but do you think having a parable in the opening is a good idea too (preferably consistent with the closing too)? That’s how my school teaches to write an opening so I want to know your thoughts.
Hey Nathan--great question! My preference is to save the parable for closing, but I have seen it done well both ways. I like to stick with the literal story of the case during opening, and move to an analogy during closing. That's a comment I've gotten a lot! Gonna try it out (no music) on this month's videos and see if people like it better.
