Sad seeing Girvan decline the way it has. I’m 48 and as a kid we had a static caravan at Maidens, we were at Girvan most weekends and I loved the place. I saw the Goonies at the cinema in Girvan. Sad to see
Girvan was my go too holiday as a youngster because my family originated from the town,Moved there as a 14 year old in 1979 and seen the place die but it’s still home for me for me and still like the place.
I’m from Glasgow been living in England since 1980 as a kid holidaying in Ayr and trips to GIRVAN. It was a bustling vibrant town with a great swimming pool on the harbour front. Both my daughters born in England I took to Newton Stewart Galloway and up to Ayrshire. Fantastic and happy memories we had of that part of Scotland I wish it well and hope it can get back to its heyday. Keep a Pictorial history of your town for future generations to know about and remember the people that made it what it was. Floreat Alba
I grew up there in the 90s and early 00s and it is noticeable how bad it has gotten these days, in a similar manner to Ayr but on a smaller scale. One thing that is noticeable though is the amount of Amazon vans buzzing around the housing estates of these towns. It’s easy to point the finger at the council but ultimately it is changing consumer behaviour and big online shopping corporations that have killed the high streets. The same decline is happening all over the UK, particularly in rural areas.
its the council to blame for putting all these double yellow lines down.......look at the clip from the start and watch the double yellow lines........pedestrianisation also kills shopping areas.
80s and 90s were sandwiched between the 70s monstrosity of the town redevelopment, (which according to my Granny looked nothing like the plans) then building of out of town retail parks in the 00s. Problem with most of Ayrshire is (imo) Irvine. All the investment over a generation went into the new town leaving Ayr Kilmarnock & everywhere else on the slide.

That Indian restaurant Yasmin's is banging. Inside it looks dated, but the food was great. I'd honestly move there in a heartbeat.💙
The beach, harbour and the backdrop of hills make Girvan so scenic. It’s really sad that the decay has taken hold of the high street. Its a ghost of itself. 1990.. a great year to visit. What changed? Was the parking on the high street altered? Did they widen the pavement in areas or add double yellow lines? Did a supermarket open in the town? If so, alterations such as I've mentioned usually bring about the demise of a thriving shopping street.
