There is a good reason why planning policies were put in place to prevent developers building properties where they were not needed and where there are no facilities (schools, work, shops etc). Sadly these planning guidance have all been removed in favour of a Developers Charter. Why is preference not given to brownfield sites (preciously developed sites) over greenfield sites like in Sorn? Simply because there is no VAT charged on greenfield sites, while 20% VAT is charged on brownfield sites.

It has actually improved since this video. Hotel eyesore demolished, Merlin cinema opened, front of some pubs renovated, new cafes etc in high Street. It can turn a corner.

I grew up in Ayr. It’s sad to see this level of decay, and break my heart every time I’m home. These places were busteling in the 80’s and 90’s. We had some great times in that toon! Thank you for the videos mate!

I remember working in the odeon as a cleaner in the early 2000’s , spooky place to be in early in the morning, as it was always a really early start for me cleaning in there in the mornings . It is the internet that has made Ayr and all its places close .

I was a school boy “boarder” from 69 to 74 when it closed down as a School. It was immaculate with the gardens and grounds looked after by A Mr Walter Stewart, and us boys (about thirty or so full time boarders and seventy or so day pupils). The School had a fully functioning machine shop, and forge. wood working , forestry, agriculture, horticulture, live stock and arable land. Set in I think fifty acres, along with a traditional range of sporting and education curriculum. What It did not have was enough pupils and so the costs became exorbitant. Jack Gilmore was the head master and a daemon with the Tause as were all the school masters (the matron was Mrs Kirkwood i think). the main hall was so lovely with a huge lions head over a massive mantle with a fire on in the winter, the Parquet flooring was meticulously polished every day ,with a sweeping stair case that led up to the Headmasters apartment, the Music room, and on up to the math's /science rooms, and some of the boys dormitory's Big Doon and Wee Doon . (Nith, Luger, and Afton in the other side of the School) . I learned how to shovel coking coal for the boiler room and how to harvest neeps, tatties, pick Brussel sprouts and many many other skills, including building a boat! shooting, skiing, how to work a forge and a metal and working lathe ( and get my first set of Doc Martins) that all lead me to a pretty good skill set on how to fend for myself. to see it now is I suppose telling just how long ago was that.. (no one has mentioned the green Lady! she was alleged to live in the tower but that is just a daft story to scare the wee ones)

As someone born, bred and still living in Ayr, I'm black affronted at this video.

Sadly this is just going to get worse for towns like Ayr with the rise in corporate power, and Globalism focusing power in the hands of a few massive corporations, towns like Ayr are going to continue to decline as small shops are pushed under for the likes of amazon the degradation will continue maybe even ramp up.

SAC destroyed Ayr! They’ve left the place to ruin all in the name of holding onto history. These abandoned buildings are a blight on the landscape of Ayr. Spent most of my life in the town (not all) and been able to see first hand the demise of Ayr. They’ve ruined it, absolutely ruined it.

Unfortunately it’s down to years of council neglect and lack of accountability and foresight to encourage new ideas and welcome new businesses and potential the the town and surrounding area, the hound people the minute they arrive with the traffic wardens who are desperate to get numbers and the council would rather have empty shops sitting than affordable rates , and the only business that is booming is the chemists who dole out the methadone to a army of junkies who roam the streets and fight for your spare change with the beggar like some sort of mutant pigeons

I have just taken over the care of another memorial to a Hurricane pilot. This one is to Sgt Leonard May who died after a mid-air collision with another 17 Squadron Hurricane near the village of Garmouth, Moray, on 8 July 1941. The small roadside memorial was erected by a villager the following year and has survived, although it has been somewhat neglected in recent years due to ill health of previous 'caretakers'. I will get it back to its former glory but it's still work in progress at the moment. He will continue to be remembered by the village - Per Ardua Ad Astra.

I used to live in Ayr, having moved there in 2005. It was a beautiful, bustling town with plenty of pubs. I lived at Kings Court and moved away again in 2007. Used to drink at O'Sheas and Billy Bridges, occasionally Fury Murrays, which was a shit club with an even shittier goth night with a laptop DJ. I recall people avoiding me because I was very goth and still dressed like I was going to a London club for a night out. Such a shame to see what's happened to the place.

Spent 4 days in that ‘cinema’ in 2021 doing jury service, while youve shown its bad on the outside by christ it was grimmer internally lol

I visited this June for first time since 2011. Was shocked to see how much had shut down. Still beautiful beach and view and some great walks but grim and sad. 😢
