I honestly can't think what the common denominator has been since 2015, or did it all start a little before then? Business rates increases, hikes in taxes, ridiculous parking charges, bus station a no go area, no investment in the area, no pride in the area by the local authority, drastically reduced police numbers, junkies, beggars, neds, etc etc. It all adds up to an extremely non desirable place to live or visit. Why visit Killie when you can shop in Silverburn or Braehead ned and junkie free?

When will any government or council realize that online reduces the need and profitability of High Street shops reduce the rates and allow cheap or free parking stores will come back don't wait until M&S or Next announce they are leaving by then it is too late also we need jobs not more cheap imports but no one seems to see this also with all the new houses being built in Kilmarnock and area business rates could easily be halved and maybe get our young into jobs and have some pride in earning their own money .

Maybe the truth is that the high street has had its day. We cant buy everything online and then expect streets to be full of shoppers. Unless habits change town centres will become used less and less. Councils cant change that but they can look at other uses for these shared urban spaces and what they could be instead of a mass of empty buildings

I am Kilmarnock born and bred and the main street is reminiscent of Beirut. There is decay vandalism and neglect everywhere you turn and sadly this is not just peculiar to Kilmarnock it is happening all over. Kilmarnock destroyed itself in the late 60s and early70s when they demolished most of the town which had many splendid buildings and replaced them with ugly concrete and brick monstrosities which have not stood the test of time and in many cases require demolishing..There are fortunately many good things still in Kilmarnock, the Dean Country Park and some nice new housing by the council and private builders. Kilmarnock hopefully like other parts of Ayrshire will surmount many of the problems that exist but that will need government funding and good research into what it takes to make town centres vibrant again and teem with life. There is hope and the people of Kilmarnock deserve better. But, massive investment is needed ,we can however live in hope.

My town. I was born in 78. It was thriving at one point. In the 90s you could have got fed up with your job, left on a Wednesday and had a new job by Monday. Every building had a shop, business or bar in it. So day or night, the town centre was mobbed. Saturdays were always shoulder to shoulder busy. Me and my family are looking to leave Scotland/UK altogether.

Don't believe everything you see however. A balance of decay with depressing music Vs shots of beauty spots with upbeat music. Mmmmmm?! Yes you might have to dig deep but there are still some gems and life in this town. Anyway, admittedly there is recognisable decline in the town of the tallest order but it is a carbon copy of all Ayrshire towns, Glasgow included. It's a sign of the times throughout due to central Governments, almost bankrupt local Councils, globalisation and online shopping to blame. However, like most industrial towns, Kilmarnock has had its glory days and nothing in life remains the same. To make a shift and have a major change we need private investment, belief and reimagination.

A lot of small independent stores and Coffee shops, such as Mamita’s have closed on a Monday since the disaster that was Covid. Personally I think there’s a growing number of new shops adding to the centre. There’s still some very poor and degraded areas in the film, which definitely need to be looked at, but it’s not all bad. Work to be done.
