It all depends on what trains have been cleared to proceed over the crossing, and what haven't. Sometimes, it's worth keeping the crossing lowered, rather than raising and lowering it again in quick succession.
I remember this crossing when it had swing gates, and my late older brother used to hold me over the parapet of the foot bridge as the CUNARD Boat train went down to the docks. I remember that I used to go home with smut marks on my shirt , and stunk burnt coal! I am 62 years old now, but this area is still NORTHAM missing of course is the SOUTHERN Television Centre, but Mount Pleasant Level Crossing is, and will remain in my memory of childhood youth. Good video. It reminds me of a day much past! Thank You!
Oh wow, a 4 track level crossing❗️ I have never seen one of those before🤩. I have also never seen so many trains in one video🤩. I have also never seen a 450 connected to a 444 before❗️😮. What a video🥳.
Thanks 😁 Yes this is indeed a four track crossing. It is also, by the latest statistics, the busiest road level crossing in the UK, with around 450 trains passing each day 👍
Ah! The bleak and Ironically named 'Mount Pleasant' level crossing! With such a bleak, ominous and run-down setting, they should've called it "Mount-Unpleasant Level Crossing"! It's this as one of the reasons why I just call it "Southampton Level Crossing" lol. It amazes me how busy this crossing is, yet it still has bells and classic GWE barriers, and NR clearly want this to stay as it is by protesting any ideology or suspicion of an upgrade with new GWE barrier arms, installed in late 2018! I love how the wigwags are so high up here too - this was also done earlier in 2018, but it hasn't done much to affect misuse as can clearly be seen with the Peugeot at the start! Something that one may also not notice with a cursory glance is that the telephones here actually have proper ringing bells on the back of them, rather than just a more conventional and fake electronic sound, which really suits the crossing in my opinion! A fabulous video and catch of one of my favourite level crossings in Hampshire, and dare I say it, the UK!
Thanks mate 😁 The area wasn't bad tbh, it was a rather interesting area of Southampton. I would've thought this crossing would have been fully upgraded with new lights, barriers, electronic alarms and possibly pedestrian lights. However, the business of this crossing is probably an issue. I did notice bells in the phone boxes, likewise at Totton.
That's so cool! Wow! 5 trains, and that poor ambulance has to wait behind the barriers for ages. I hope it isn't carrying a patient who needs treatment urgently. Keep up the great vids 😍👍
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel I live by wallingford, it's amazing how bad the alarms sound, the council said they would maintain it 5 years ago, and they never did.
Yeah they would have to wait, unless the signaller saw an emergency vehicle waiting via the CCTV, they may decide to raise the barriers to let them through
Something to note is that the Northam Junction further towards Southampton was , and I still understand is the sharpest curve on the rail network in the UK! I therefore conclude that you have got the busiest railway Crossing as well as the sharpest bend on the UK's railway network. ( pity they didn't keep the signal box )
Thanks 😁 Nice one. There are 4 crossings in Southampton, and this one is the busiest in the area. You wouldn't need a timetable as this crossing is lowered every few minutes lol
Well not exactly, it was five trains in one crossing closure, which is pretty rare still as you'd typically see between one or two trains at an average level crossing.
Im going to the UK during week 44! Will be going to these crossings: Charlton Lane, Charlton Angerstein Wharf Foot Crossing (Londons only foot crossing!) Mount Pleasant Road, Southampton Canute Road Level Crossing, Southampton Maybe Chapel Road Level Crossing, Southampton St Denys Level Crossing, Southampton
I reckon its just 2 trains just going back and forth to give the impression that's its really busy... Seriously though, they should build a little bridge or something, 8 minute delays could cost lives in a medical emergency
I love the bells! I don't like the alarms on most crossings as they make me jump in fright.Does any other crossings or opening bridges still have bells I wonder?
Yeah there's a few crossings I've filmed that still have bells. Some include Charlton Lane, Cross Lane in Collingham, Winthorpe, St Stephens in Canterbury, two crossings in Sabdwich, Kent, St Denys (other crossing in Southampton) and Farncombe East. There's a bridge called the Kingsferry bridge in northern Kent which has bells. I've filmed it twice when it opened but haven't filmed the bridge raise in full yet.
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel Ironically, i may film more bells than alarms! Will be going both here and to Charlton Lane in London! But want to film some crossing with alarms too!
@@swedishlevelcrossingchanne2745 Nice 👍 Charlton Lane is a nice crossing. There is Adelaide crossing by St Denys, also in Southampton which has bells. Here is a level crossings map which might be useful: www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=www.google.com/maps/d/viewer%3Fmid%3D1S7EwORD3P9iwVGPAytzkm1BXnzo%26ll%3D0%252C0%26z%3D5&ved=2ahUKEwiKgJC7sN_kAhWogVwKHVhdD-oQFjABegQIChAB&usg=AOvVaw03Tpk4mfJuK6l0SD7ZEirz
Its to do with how these full barrier crossings operate. Because the barriers cross the whole road, a train is only allowed to proceed when the crossing is confirmed clear of any obstructions (pedestrians and vehicles). Therefore, crossings like these are monitored when they are lowered by signallers, either in a signal box beside the crossing or in the case of this particular crossing, via CCTV. Signals are set to proceed when a crossing is confirmed clear. This is why a train is usually a couple of minutes away when a crossing is lowered, as it is usually 1-2 signals away from passing.
This is the busiest road crossing in the UK so it is lowered for more than one train quite often. I can understand why people may want to misuse the crossing, but it's dangerous.
This crossing usually has to be lowered roughly 2 minutes before a train passes. As there's loads of trains per hour, it can be difficult to raise the crossing in-between trains.
Wow! That is insane. I felt sure there was enough time between the SWR and Southern trains to lift the barriers again!
It all depends on what trains have been cleared to proceed over the crossing, and what haven't. Sometimes, it's worth keeping the crossing lowered, rather than raising and lowering it again in quick succession.
A crossing near me always comes down between 3 and 7 minutes before the train passes through. Drivers who aren’t local tend to get frustrated!
I remember this crossing when it had swing gates, and my late older brother used to hold me over the parapet of the foot bridge as the CUNARD Boat train went down to the docks.

Jamie back again with his clickbait 😂. Love this crossing.

That is a longest train
Even tho I’m not from or ever been to the UK this is my favorite level crossing just because of the bells it has
It's a unique crossing here in the UK because of the bells 👍
Often wonder about ambulances on the way to an emergency stuck at barriers like this for ages.
Yeah they would have to wait, unless the signaller saw an emergency vehicle waiting via the CCTV, they may decide to raise the barriers to let them through

Yeah it was, although it didn't have its lights on so it may not have been on an emergency call, but I don't know where it was goinb

this is the link if you want to watch it th-cam.com/video/Hfr8C6o8cfQ/w-d-xo.html
Why did the first train (450) and the third train (377) Was slow?
They were both approaching Southampton Central and probably had red signals ahead.
This is why people try to beat the gates. That is way to long to stay down. There was time to raise them for a couple of minutes there crazy.
This is the busiest road crossing in the UK so it is lowered for more than one train quite often. I can understand why people may want to misuse the crossing, but it's dangerous.
I thought helpston level crossing was the buisest one. Think it has 5 or 6 lines.
This is the busiest crossing in terms of number of trains. Helpston is the longest crossing in the UK, spanning 6 tracks, but it is not the busiest.
i would love to see a british crossing with safetran bells or federal signal mechanical bells. for this american, those bells sound a bit lazy

The barriers are old and this crossing still has bells which is quite rare - also this is one of the busiest level crossings in the UK
Crossing from hell.
One of the busiest, if not, the busiest crossing in the UK, so yes hell for drivers lol.
This crossing is ridiculous
Well it is the busiest in the UK lol
Why bell alarms not two tone?
There's only one bell in two of the barriers. You can hear both bells ringing though.
I mean why not the usual two tone electric siren like on other crossings?
If vehicle drivers didn't misuse then it wouldn't need to be lowered so early! And could go up between trains!
This crossing usually has to be lowered roughly 2 minutes before a train passes. As there's loads of trains per hour, it can be difficult to raise the crossing in-between trains.
