Little bit late to the party. Also a carver beginner here. Learning by doing with help of TH-cam and great people that share their knowledge by making videos. I watched tons of them You certainly standout. Very relaxed, slow explanation of every step. Your template is explained the way you drew it. All distances, points, everything everything is mention. That is of enormous importance to a beginner like myself. Thank you very much and please keep up the good work
Thanks for your video! New subscriber here at age 64 I think I have a new hobby here! I carved one already and my daughter wants one so I will have to make some more, I need to work on my carving skills but I enjoy this “new” hobby !
Hi Steve! You’re very welcome! I’m happy to hear that your enjoying carving, it’s a great hobby! I also want to thank you for posting a comment, I really appreciate that.
Love the way you use the craft knife the video is so easy to follow you take your time to show us what to do and how to hold it thank very much Ron from the UK
Hi Ron! I have a daughter living in the UK. I hope to visit there someday. Thanks for taking the time to post a comment. I appreciate your kind words very much. Cheers!
Thanks! I use my Stanley regularly. Lynn Doughty is a highly skilled carver and his use of the Stanley is what influenced me to give it a try. I appreciate you taking the time to post a comment!
Hi Donald! I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed this new tutorial. Thanks for sharing the comment about gifting your carving to your sister, Sunni and I really enjoy posts like this!

Thank you for this really informative video. Finally someone who explains it understandably for beginners. I'm glad you included my request to give the dimensions in millimeters as well. Greetings to Sunni and thank you for reminding Jack permanently. By the way, super video quality. Unlike some other videos of other carvers, you both pay attention to a very good camera work and video editing. Keep up the good work and I wish you continued success. Stay healthy.
I know this is an older video but quality does not age 😊. I really am a beginner and have not felt I can accomplish what I have seen in many tutorials but this one is different. The information, advice and encouragement packed into this tutorial has had me digging out a 1x1 basswood spindle and I have just finished pencilling out the layout ready to start carving later today when I will have a bit of time to absorb myself into creating this great little character. Many thanks 🙏
I'm seeing V gouge as a useful tool and many carvers seems to shame them. Seems to be a advantage to drawing lines to separate different areas from getting cut wrong looking like something I'll be sure to do. IttyBilly cute name. Thanks for helping me and others
Thanks John! Yes, I agree, the V-Tool is very useful and I would recommend them to anyone interested in carving with hand tools. Thanks for your comment.
Thank you so much for sharing. Going to make ten of these guys , using them for tic tac toe . Btw I broke a chunk out of a hat ,after glueing in the piece I added stitch markers with a wood burner like it was sewn back on Thanks again . And thank you Sonnie for the great camera work.😇
Hi Ben! Adding the stitch marks is a great idea, thanks for sharing that! The tic tac toe set is a really cool idea as well! I need to order more 1x1 stock and make one too!
This is such a great beginners tutorial - And it was a great way to pass the time during Hurricane Henri up here on the Connecticut shoreline ! ! I learned more in this video than many others that I've watched and ended up with some great little Hillbillies for my grandchildren. Thank you. Liked, Subscribed and looking forward to doing more of your carves !
Thank you very much David! I’m happy to hear that you enjoyed the video, they really are fun little guys to carve. I hope Henri doesn’t cause any problems for you. Thanks for subscribing and thanks for posting your comment!
Thank you. U dun good. Nice to see the Stanley 199 being used. One thing that will improve cutting performance is to remember to strop even new blades before using just like any other carving knife. Touch the blade up on a strop every so often.
Thanks! Yes, I like the Stanley. I like bourbon as well. I've experimented with a variety of utility blades and I agree with you, stropping improves the performance. Thanks for taking the time to post a comment, I really appreciate it!
Great choice in utility blades. Lenox blades allow for easy adjustment of blade stick out without having to modify knife body. Looking forward to your next project. Thankyou again. I'm not telling you something new, but it is a good pallet for beginners to get useful info.
@finebourbon Thank you sir. Appreciate you taking the time to share some thoughts with me and the other readers of these comments. The Lennox blades are more expensive and I think they're worth the extra cost. I feel a kinship to my carving cousins and I want to help beginners to experience success, gain confidence, and become lifelong learners.
I have had to glue several pieces back into place, noses, feet, tails etc all part of the fun😉 also with faces do not worry too much about symmetry, check in the mirror you have two different faces.
Yes the inspiration came from Don Mertz. The Mertz Whittle Dwarf is more challenging because it's even smaller in size and includes tiny details such as, eyes, ears, Etc.
Hey, Im from Danmark I would like to se you carve some other Wood than basswood. Its not Easy to get basswood over here. I once ordered some peaces, but it was much to hard. - do not know why. So please show some other types of Wood . I really like your little films. Best regards from denmark. Esben.
Hello Esben! Thanks for your suggestion. I just recently posted a video of a carving out of Butternut wood which is also known as white walnut. When I first started carving I used only red cedar. I understand many carvers in Europe use Lime or Linden wood. What type of wood is available to you?
Hi Peter! I do like Alan Jackson and of course I know the song. 🙂 Here in the southern US “itty bitty” is a common way of describing something very small. I’ve heard it and said it since I was an itty bitty boy. 🙂
Sir I'm disabled, I do leather, belts, holsters, knife sheathd. I want one hillbilly for my own cane. I really don't need to make a full hobby to do a cane! I do leather cane wraps! Can you help I just ordered one from Canada not the true Billy tall hat,
Hi Robert! I appreciate you reaching out. I'm not sure what will work best with a cane. Perhaps you and I can discuss it further. If you're on Facebook you could send me a message through the Messenger app. Or if you provide your email address I'm happy to send you an email. Thanks!

Hi Luke! Thanks for your kind comment! I'm happy to hear that you've carved one of these little guys. Cheers from Florida.
Years ago I carved a chess set using only a Stanley knife. You're the only other person I've seen using one. They're great. Lovey figures by the way.
Thanks! I use my Stanley regularly. Lynn Doughty is a highly skilled carver and his use of the Stanley is what influenced me to give it a try. I appreciate you taking the time to post a comment!

So true graham most human faces are not symmetrical. Glue can be a very effective fix for sure!
Good video
Thanks Tom!
Ok I've learned some hat ,boot, nose, being on blood thinners, stopped there! Go get gloves tomorrow! Its do able ! After learning lol
Good idea, I definitely recommend cut resistant gloves.
Checked the whittle dwarf guy, he looks a bit like one of his characters😂
Yes the inspiration came from Don Mertz. The Mertz Whittle Dwarf is more challenging because it's even smaller in size and includes tiny details such as, eyes, ears, Etc.

Hi Cynthia, I’m using Basswood. It’s great for carving and readily available in craft stores and at various online sellers. Thanks for your question.
Greetings from Guernsey , are you by any way an Alan Jackson fan ' Ittybitty ' i.e. Itty Billy ?.
Hi Peter! I do like Alan Jackson and of course I know the song. 🙂 Here in the southern US “itty bitty” is a common way of describing something very small. I’ve heard it and said it since I was an itty bitty boy. 🙂
Can do knife leather wraps
Hi Robert, I will try to call you tomorrow.

You could make this a little less confusing by eliminating the upside down one. js
I think you're right, it was just there for me to use as a handle.
First piece had crack in boot area cut toe off
3 inch much easier beginning s, learned itty bitty tougher
Yes, small carvings can be challenging.
Some tape on the back of the blade would make it more user friendly🤔
Yes, that would improve the comfort. Fortunately my gloves keep me comfortable.
