    Cousin Jack, I just found your channel and I really like your tempo and teaching style. I’m going to start on my own gnome this evening. Can you tell me if you use a wood burner on the creases and areas where you join elements? It seems like that would be a simple way to add shadows vs painting those areas. I’m subscribed and looking forward to following your excellent guides. Oh, and I ONLY carve Heineke basswood! Cheers, Steve.

    • @whittling
      @whittling  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Cousin Steve! Thanks for watching, I’m happy to hear that you are enjoying the channel! I do sometimes use a wood burner as you mentioned, my snowman tutorial features that approach. With the Gnome I didn’t wood burn because I knew I would be antiquing instead. I can’t imagine myself switching to another supplier- Heinecke is hard to beat!

      Hi Cousin Pete! The pattern for this gnome was published in the most recent edition of Chip Chats magazine. I also posted a pattern for the Hillbilly Yoga figure under the “Community” tab of my TH-cam channel.

    What sketch book is that you use?

    Great video. I just subscribed. Do you always draw your carving first in your journal?

    • @whittling
      @whittling  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks for subscribing. I would say that most of the time I will start with a drawing. There are some exceptions. For example, the snowman tutorial was based off of a Mike Shipley pattern. I just looked at his drawing. On other occasions I'll just carve some practice pieces without any preconceived outcome.

    Hey cousin what gouges do you suggest for beginners?

    • @whittling
      @whittling  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Cousin Brad! I suppose I’d recommend a small (3 millimeter or less) and a medium (10 millimeter) gouge with a number 9 or number 10 sweep. Flexcut and OCCT have a wide variety of options. I also like the “Swiss Made” Pfeil brand of gouges.

    Can I use a 1 1/2 × 1 1/2 x 5 piece of basswood?

    • @whittling
      @whittling  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Brad! Absolutely! The 5" is an extra half inch taller than my original and you could easily just give him a taller hat or just use the extra half inch at the bottom and have him standing on a half inch base. Thanks for your question. Happy carving!

      Hi Lefty! I’m happy to hear from you! I can’t imagine carving right handed, I’ve tried it and it felt strange.🙂 I don’t have any left handed specific tips. There are some tools (skew chisels) that are specific to left Vs right handed carvers. I recommend you check out Kevin Coates, he’s an excellent Lefty carvers with many videos on his TH-cam channel.
