ALRIGHT SO. Last week we talked ENFP productivity, this week we're talking the ENFP's cognitive twin - the INFP! Both types use introverted feeling, extroverted intuition, introverted sensing and extroverted thinking - just in a slightly different order.
Whether you're an INFP or an ENFP, ENTP, INTP, ESFP, ISFP, ESFJ, ISFJ, ESTP, ISTP, ESTJ or ISTJ who loves one .... here is a video?
I'm sorry. I had to put some key words in there. You MBTI nerds get the point. 16personalities etc.

    Some notes from the session:
Time management problems are more about emotion management issues.
    Tips:
    1. Address emotions: Don't dismiss your emotions. Note them & schedule a definite time for addressing them. Emotions delayed are emotions amplified, so make sure to address all of them. (even if you don't feel them anymore)
    2. You are capable! : If you are avoiding a task for any reason(incompetence, boredom, etc.) pair the activity up with something that's the antidote to your weakness.
    3. Own who you are: Every action of yours is a vote for who you want to be. Align your actions to the values that you revere.
    4. You're a child in the candy store: Enlist the projects you want to work on that day. Present that delicious platter of variety to the mind. Pick the one that feels the most exciting & start working! Feel free to switch to the next best thing if it doesn't work out.
    5. Open your mind: Burnout is more of an input than an output issue. Expose yourself to novel thoughts, experiences, & emotions.
    6. Focus in the background: While facing difficulty with a task, perform an activity that relaxes your mind & think about it in the background.
    7. Design your path to productivity: Look out for trigger points & hold tightly to those which promote happiness, flow & energy in your life. Discard the rest.
    8. Savor the dopamine: Don't overly structure your life. Break all of your overwhelming goals into small chunks & enjoy completing these teeny bits. Tiny achievements are the foundation of our success.
    Hope it helps. Peace out!

I’ve told my teachers and friends that I procrastinate because I associate anxiety with studying. They took it as laziness.. that I’m undisciplined. But I wasn’t always like this. The triggering thing is so real!!! I knew there was an underlying issue, and you literally explained it perfectly 😭 being an INFP is such a struggle

Yeah, I have triggers of failure too which just doesn't get me going, from past experiences. For us Si just becomes too gripy sometimes and we believe what happens in the past is going to happen exactly the same again, because we are we, how can we do something different.
But trying to get evidences from our life that past never exactly repeats itself truly helps navigating this paralyzing feeling. Sort of, One experience over writing another.

    Reminders for me:
    1. Have appointments with your emotions.
    2. Do something that makes you feel good when you're dealing with something that doesn't.
    3. Choose what kind of person you wanna be. And act with their values. Also, do something that aligns with your values.
    4. Let yourself enjoy what you like to do once in a while.

I needed to hear all of this and I wish I watched this last week when I was burning out and crying because I just didn't know what to do anymore. I stopped doing any of my hobbies because there was this one thing at work that I had no idea at all what to do and I felt like I didn't deserve to do anything else until I got that work stuff done. Now I know that I should've just done the things I'm good at to give myself a confidence boost instead of crying in the corner because I felt stupid and incompetent.

I understand that you're appreciative of the video but the timing isn't exactly right? Care to take a walk around a bit?
Can you honestly say that this video and message would have resonated with you in the same manner that it did if you had watched this a week earlier? Can you honestly say that the individual that has stumbled upon this video after either actively searching for it or the algorithm bringing it to your plate is in any way stupid or incompetent? Mind you I'm not trying to get you to question yourself, I'm doing this more so to help broaden the way that you're seeing these things in order to give you a wider range of vision, increase clarity a little, or even throw a filter in there to add a lil pizzazz.
We're often quite harsh on ourselves when it comes to certain things, some may be monumental and some may seem to be the most insignificant thing in the world - I'm sure you're quite familiar with this, but I'd like to add a perspective via an INFP in hopes of giving you an extra pep in your step, boosting your morale, or putting a smile on your face when the damned thing just didn't seem to wanna budge into that facial expression that lets the world know that you're happy. I see you as an individual who is aware of your surroundings, knowledgeable in so many different topics that most people would have difficulty keeping up with, someone who owns their faults, doesn't shrug the accountability off onto someone else. I also see you as an individual who not only has questions, but able to produce answers many times over.
I would say continue doing your thing, be yourself, and take care of yourself but the first two kinda go without saying for our types lol. The latter sticks though, keep your head up, remember that "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" - Lao Tzu I'm sure if any of our journeys were transferred over to mileage, there wouldn't be enough numbers in the world to create the distance that we as idealist/dreamers are fully capable of. Many people see INFP as a weakness, being overly sensitive, and all those stereotypical stigma that roll with any label that automatically relates feelings to a person (especially being male) on the contrary it is a superpower. We're capable of things that other types simply aren't even capable of. The way we do things is awkward, unique, off colored, and just what the doctor ordered (move over apple) I hope you're able to appreciate who you are as an individual in the way that I appreciate you as an individual. Know that in moments that your confidence in yourself may wane, I'm cheering you on from a distance, silently *rah rah rah'ing* as your pace matches the beat of a drum.
Go Reg RR!!! You've got this, it's in the bag, hell it is the bag!

    1. Make an appointment for later with the emotions that overwhelm you.
    2. Pair your competencies with your incompetencies, to rewire your brain.
    3. Define the person you want to be and act like that person. They will accumulate into an identity.
    4. Give your brain multiple options explore. Listen to your natural energy.
    5. Feed your brain with new things. And passively observe to see if you can find solutions.
    6. Be acquainted with your environmental triggers, observe them, and optimize your self accordingly.
    7. Don't overly structure your time. Train your mind to set achievable goals. Anchor yourself with your achievements.

As an INFP, I really needed this. Thank you so much. So far, I have not seen anyone explain this the way you have. I now know what my different functions are. It made me think of a certain example of when I was trying to be part of a workout group and the goal was to work out everyday. Some in the the group reached a full year of working out everyday and this made feel overwhelmed, but at the beginning I was pumped. I eventually slacked off and quit the group. I always felt like a bit of a failure after that. Ever since then, It's been hard for me to get back into the routine and now I understand why; I felt like I was going to fail again. Watching this video made me realize that I was overwhelmed. I can actually feel the overwhelm when I think about it. I thought I was just failing. My goal is to be healthy and in good shape and I understand how much I need to do to get there--that's good enough. I started working out again about a week and a half ago but on my own. I've worked out about 7 days out of 10 and that is good for me. I feel a lot better. Working out is not the only thing I need to improve on. I am glad I found this video.

One thing I’ve figured out recently is that I do much better work when I “play” first. I always felt guilt and shame for being “immature” because I just wanted to have fun. I tried to be serious about my productivity and do what I thought you must do to be productive and that is work before play. But I always end up unmotivated, lethargic, perfectionistic, this I don’t get much of anything and I can never get much wanted/needed fun time because I felt it was undeserved. But then I accepted it wasn’t a flaw in me, but probably just the order that I work best in. It’s nice to hear that confirmed here and that it’s how my psyche works.

    I strugle with Te
One method that actually works for me and I've been using this from when I was in middle school without knowing about personality types is to plan my week and write for every day a check list with what I have to do without mentioning the time. Thinking I have thr all day to do it takes the pressure away while I still have some kind of vision of the week so I don't feel unprepared.

I have two main experiences with being productive:
    - being a very productive person that enjoys routine and treats emotions properly at the same time (because the truth is that we don't need to feel everything deeply all the time)
    - not being productive at all, staying in my bed scrolling on my cellphone after wake up and going to sleep very late, mind working all the time...
With those experiences, if I had to choose only one to live for the rest of my life, it would be the first one.
    God bless you Heidi

  • @vivimeetsworld5065
    @vivimeetsworld5065 3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

First of all, thank you Heidi! This was too insightful! I have a lot of thoughts about it! I definitely have been feeling structure hunger ever since the pandemic started. So, just accepting and not rebelling with this fact opens up too many opportunities for growth!
    1. I loved how you advised NP types to have multiple projects at any given point of time. I tend to swing between the extremities of a pendulum of either being too lazy or hyper structuring and planning every minute of the day with zero flexibility given to me. Had disastrous consequences (on my confidence to do basically anything). I think it was more Si(??) in terms of going perfectionist all-or-nothing about everything I have zero confidence on.
    2. Thank you for mentioning NLP! I just came up with a few possible routines. a) I could schedule doing 20 problems (yes, I'm a student) the first thing in the morning before I even brush my teeth. Then, just have time slots before and after lunch, dinner etc with an if-then condition.
    3. 1000% correct on the input problem.
    4. 1000% of the times, I actually struggle with gaining momentum on things. The initial friction. How I interrupt my own flow states. Or sometimes, how I just not care enough, or am lazy. Other times, it's not a laziness problem, but something that occurs because I prematurely gave up and did not try. I intend to change that.
    5. Everything about having too large goals, without small increments, is just spot-on. I expect magically to be Usain Bolting across all of my goals with the actual strength of a snail. Without increasing my ability in steps, it's just too... irrational.

    • @vivimeetsworld5065
      @vivimeetsworld5065 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I also realized that many of my reasons are just not... mbti related. That's just me giving excuses and labeling it as a type problem. It's just... I am so guilty of this. I just want to take the responsibility completely and fix it.
Also, a brilliant quote I read once which I think really applies to my tendencies: "The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new." ~Socrates
I will have to build the muscles of self-development and just do the things I need to do. It's probably just non-negotiable and maybe everyone has to do it, regardless of type.
As always, your video was brilliant. Thank youuuuu! 🥰🥰🥰

Fantastic video! As an INFP I am happy to say I have figured out some of these over time. I especially relate to keeping my working environment in tidier order (and, purposefully leaving things within sight if they are important, so I don't forget). Some days are perfect for looking at a list of different things to do and letting myself pick which one to do first. Still productive! Using social media less also helps, because it will frequently trigger unhelpful emotional states.

  • @orangesheep7094
    @orangesheep7094 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I am an infp and here are some advice that are useful for me. Maybe try will work for you too!
    1. Make small goals. We are the type of people who aren't good with looking into future
    2. Multitask, especially when you have to do something you don't want to. Listen to music while doing math or crochet while listening to lectures you don't like, for example. Also when I have to read a book but I don't like this book I often just listen to audiobook while playing subway surf lol
    3. Romanticize! I'm not joking sometimes it's a game changer but don't over romanticize too
    4. Make everything about yourself and your interests. For example, when you have to read a classic novel that you don't enjoy look at it like from your own perspective. "Oh my god this book has enemies to lovers am I right?" "This is one of the first coming of age books probably". Look at projects from your own unexpected pov, even if it isn't practical or beneficial. This way you will enjoy the process more!
    5. Put into your projects something you're passionate about. Don't be afraid of being extra
    6. Emotionally attach. For example, when I read war and peace I realized that one of my favorite songs depict relationship between main characters. I was emotionally attached to the song and now I'm more emotionally attached to these characters from the book which I didn't like in the first place.
Or for example when you have to learn about some age in history you can suddenly remember the song that depicts this atmosphere. And BOOM now you're emotional about it
    7. It's better to do something not perfectly and completely than not to do it at all
If you want more examples feel free to ask I just thought it would be too much
I hope it will help someone!

Thank you so much for this video! I love how you use cognitive functions to explain solutions!
One thing I recently noticed is that not only something being pleasent feeds into my Fi -Si, reminding myself of "what is important?" is so useful. It puts me right back where my values are, and it prevents me from replacing Fi with Te (leads to failure, trust me), so i just say: what is important for me right now? What do i really care about?
As an INFP it is way better to know where your values are, what you care about in your life, and what means a lot to you. That's why you can find INFP parents being very responsibile of their children, or being very passionate as lovers or as writers or creators like ISFPs!
Also, write write write! Have a platform you can express your thoughts and feelings on. When you worry and overthink and dont know what to do, write it out and their solutions.i personally use OneNote for everything and i absolutely love it! Also you make it look nice so its pleasent to write and compile information, really helps the Si Te ;)
    Remind yourself of yourself,
    Remind what matters to you.:)

I had to stop listening because I was getting triggered at the mess I’m living in. I left my husband of 38 years 10 months ago and 5 months ago got my own little rental. I’ve been working to move from a large home in the country where I ran a small hobby farm to a very small townhome in the city and get my life that was completely turned upside down, set up so I can function. The piece about having several projects going at the same time is so true. I’m panicking right now not knowing how to grab ahold of this snowball that feels like it’s taking off and just growing. Not only is setting up my home overwhelming, I’m just at the beginning process of a difficult divorce, I’m caring for my mother with dementia, and navigating new friendships as well as facing financial uncertainties. Tonight feels overwhelming, just as I was about ready to settle into sleep.

This is fabulous. Always so appreciate the complexity & creativity of your approach. I have ADHD (inattentive), & for the last couple of years I've been doing a lot of work around trying to integrate that with MBTI & other systems for understanding personality & doing self-development. Btw I love Cal Newport's "Deep Work" ideas, but his brain just works so differently from mine that sometimes it's a struggle to relate to. Your cognitively-individualized suggestions make so much sense.

The key to being productive is enjoying being productive.
    1) A lot of times, when going to work you think to yourself that it’s now time to put aside your emotions. When emotions arise at an inconvenient time, set a time to go back to them.
The more you actually go back to it EVEN IF you don’t feel the emotion anymore, the more trust you build and your emotions won’t feel as urgent as before.
    2) When you procrastinate because some parts of your work make you feel some kind of negative emotions, pair it with another activity that makes you feel the opposite positive emotion.
E.g. if you feel incompetent or overwhelmed, do something that makes you feel competent and in control.
    3) Let your answer for “What kind of person do I want to be?” guide what you do.
    Ne
    4) Have a menu of different projects to choose from and switch to, including an indulging one.
    5) Solve a problem by giving yourself a lot of input and then go on a walk where you’re going to passively think about it.
    Si
    6) Go through your routine (from the time you wake up til the moment you start work) and spot any environmental / sensory triggers that lead you to an unproductive behavior (e.g. seeing lots of emails, a messy room…) and productive behaviors
    Te
    7) Don’t overly structure your schedule or you’ll get overwhelmed. You can structure a small talk (break a small talk down)
    8) Only set very small goals and achieve them. Then really sit with your feelings of pride, accomplishment and excitement about what you could do next

Thank you, Heidi!! This & the ENFP productivity have already been incredibly helpful not just to me, but another INFP friend of mine who was also struggling! This is probably going to be a video I come back to over and over again, especially as an INFP who's only been navigating self-employed life since the beginning of 2020. The overestimating Te & how much is reasonable to schedule/structure before things get off track is such a reoccurring problem! Especially after I was in a car accident this July & couldn’t write, draw, or even do simple tasks to keep feeling productive in my freelance business (or daily life!!)
I wish I could have known about you & the work you do back when I was first getting started...I tend to be so hard on myself when I can't effectively structure my time like my ISTJ mother or be more dedicated to completing a single goal in the moment like my ISTP brother. I knew since I was in school that I was also smart & very capable of getting things done, but I didn't know how to tap into my natural flow & always shamed myself into forcing my mind to complete tasks like an NTJ or STJ type. If I felt that natural INFP flow or that my Fi was feeling good, I took that as a sign that I was doing something wrong.
It wasn't until I would unconsciously play music that made me feel really good with Fi, let my mind wander with Ne to write an essay, or stop letting Si deprive myself of snacks, sleep, or brushing my teeth that I could actually get things done WELL!
If I could give INFPs one piece of advice, it would be to allow yourself to indulge in little things that make you happy & celebrate your progress along the way instead of shaming yourself or depriving yourself of those joys until the work is done!! Think, "what would make doing this necessary task the MOST fun right now as long as it isn't a distraction?" If you're worried the task will take too long, schedule in mandatory breaks to just let yourself let loose & have a reward for what you DID get done so far! If it's snacks, music, washing your face or changing your clothes, then go do it! (Also, set a timer!! You won't have to think about getting back to work at all if you know the timer will remind you instead of your inner guilt!) Little motivators along the way are little wins!

    (ENFP & habits)
    1) You have to like the habit.
E.g. You want to eat healthy food. You have to find healthy food that you like to eat.
When you start to associate the habits that you do with the person that you are, you will naturally fight to maintain those habits. Because they will feel like coming home instead of throwing yourself into the cold.

As a 40 yr old infp mom who has managed to train her Te to be able to get things done, this video feels refreshingly different yet surprisingly accurate at describing the process I went through as I develop productivity.
I have managed to concentrate on one particular interest out of so many (which I think is a personal feat 😂). I think the secret is to find a field that is sufficiently challenging that your brain will never get bored by constantly trying to integrate so many aspects at once, and make sure it aligns to your deep core values. A restrictive, technical yet creative field is good. I think INFP's need a highly restricted form of art. The more "rules" or "boundaries" we impose on ourselves, the more creativity we express. It's so counterintuitive but because our brains are so divergent, narrowing it down with boundaries actually does a lot of good. We like to find exceptions to the rule and find the most creative possibility. Use that to dive deep and create excellence. (My chosen activity is botanical art, for example). Also I have learned that even the artistic field requires long, consistent hours of work. I was able to do it by multitasking (painting in great detail and listening to an unrelated podcast with an intense topic) so intentionally distracting my brain from sitting still for hours 😂
Also, once we have formed a particular habit, it gets easier to do it on autopilot... and let our divergent mind wander off at the same time, providing recreation. Voila, productivity achieved while being dreamy😁

This video is really well done. What you explained about Te explained a huge problem I’ve had for years in school! I used to think it was a procrastination or attitude problem but now I know it’s actually Te burnout. I thought that cutting myself off from my hobbies or saving them as a reward at the end of the semester was gonna help me focus but it didn’t. No wonder it felt like such a punishment. I’m definitely gonna keep all these tips in mind as I go through this semester! :)

These are very good advices, and curiously, some of them I've been following without realising, because I followed the flow of my needs.
For example, if I'm at work and I don't like what I'm doing that day, I focus on the good things, like having a laugh with a co-worker or thinking about how beautiful will be the result.
Or using music to boost myself and make easier doing things that I don't enjoy. Also modifying my environment to be more functional and getting rid of obstacles. And the last thing I've been leaning heavily into lately is protecting who I want to become and working to make that fantasy a reality.
    Thanks for your wisdom, Heidi

Really enjoy the way that you do things, it's in a very productive, fun, and light manner that makes it seem less like you're watching something that would be labeled "self-help"
LOVING these comments, it's obvious that the influence that you have on viewers has helped stir up a bunch of INFPs to begin living life in a way that can allow us to be much more productive, content, and implementing healthy coping mechanisms in order to combat any stressors or monotony that might find itself in our path.
I'm so very thankful for people as yourself because you do so much good for the world. Not only are you helping each and every individual who gains anything from your videos, but every single person that they interact with in their healthy beautiful INFP-esuqe self... this creates wonder, splendor, beauty, and magnificence for the entire world to enjoy (should they choose to do so) It almost gives me the thought that I could be making use of these tips, fulfilling my hopes, dreams, and aspirations in the world, but I do not second guess myself when it comes to such matters and I know that the harsh truth that I've been forced to deal with is an ever present one that will not change. Complete lack of drive, passion, or desire to even exist to have another breath. Waking up for over a decade dreading that I had to face yet another day and I hadn't died in my sleep can cause one to have a truly altered perspective of things. Mind you I'm not seeking consolation, sympathy, empathy, or anything of the sort. Just doing a bit of explaining myself - maybe there's someone out there who can gain something from my words whether it be in a good way, neutral way, or even negative way (not all bad things lead to bad results) At least I know there are many INFP who are able to identify with these feelings and I hope that knowing there are others out there that are like myself and you (yes you if you're feeling this) who feel as if we're unnatural, so out of the norm that it's outlandish, treated as if we're freaks of nature, and the world is so full of groups/cliques that are all about exclusiveness instead of inclusiveness. It makes for a rather bleak and dismal perspective - maybe this part of the reason behind Edgar Allen Poe's pain, anguish, and heartache that he endured.
No matter who you are, where you're from, what you like, or even what type you are.... I want you to know that I love you, you're awesome, the world wouldn't be the place that it is without your presence and I appreciate your coming into this world at the exact moment you made your appearance. THANK YOU

Thank you so much for this video. It's a lot of information and I think I took some take away main points I want to work on. I think one of the biggest things I want to do is realizing the things that get me out of production mode. I recently learned my personality type and have been looking into understanding myself better to hopefully help me reach my goals because I definitely have some "structure hunger" but instead of being productive I lay around and beat myself up about things not happening fast enough looking for a magical solution to help me structure my time. I am so bad at the follow through. I too had come to the conclusion that when I tried to ignore my feelings to try and be productive they got louder but also when I've tried to be positive had a cynical side saying "why bother? Not like you're gonna actually be successful anyways." And would often let that side put me down and win and say "true." And go sulk instead. I really do think these things can help and make me understand better how to help have more structure in a way that it works for how my brain functions finally.

This is the most helpful and insightful video I have ever seen. I'm just out of highschool and am struggling a lot with what to do with my life and aligning my values with my strengths and things I enjoy. I'm also having to deal with the emotions of losing loved ones and just the effects of miss Rona. And honestly, it's a lot. Most days I feel lost and my idealist self is what keeps me going through these. Even then the burnout is very, VERY real. I have been looking at a lot of posts/videos to find something helpful. Most advices on the internet are very Te-esque and thus obviously not very helpful. But this did the trick. I feel seen and understood (so much so that I cried a little). This advice truly speaks to me. I made a lot of notes and will try to implement it in my life. Thank you so much, Heidi. I can't express how much this helped me out and motivated me. ❤️

A side note on your last point. I think infps have the tendency to think that they should become the 'ceo' without going through the necessary little steps because we prefer the big picture way of looking at things rather than looking at the details.
