- Here it is, our long-awaited Christmas Back from the Brink special! This episode focuses on the Powerful Owl, which is Australia's largest owl and one of our most majestic birds of prey. We join Dr Rob Clemens from BirdLife Australia who tells the story of this remarkable bird and what we can do to help by taking part in a huge nation-wide project to protect the species. Powerful story
Love the vid/presentation. Many years ago while watching TV in our family room, me and my wife heard a very deep hooting sound. It was that deep bass sound that you could feel as well as hear. So we looked outside through the window and there perched on our deck handrail was this large majestic powerful owl. He was facing the other way. This owl did a 180-degree turn with its head and looked right through us. This was an experience I will never forget.
We do to this day, hear the occasional possum screeching with the sound of gum leaves and branches crashing as these owls are on the hunt. 🦉🥰
Great story
I have one outside my house that I hear at night. I live near a national park so maybe that’s why it’s in an urban area. I don’t hear it every night but I wish I could see it

It's a while since I photographed the original picture and I don't have a lot of time to find it right now so here's a link to my collage. This bird was in Angophora Reserve, Avalon Beach, NSW. We get other owls in our area, too. For approximately 2/52, we hear owls hooting and then it stops, returning in about another 2/52 so I think that they are harvesting from different hillsides. www.flickr.com/photos/31140664@N05/19300772911/in/album-72157650838435249/
Brisbane and Melbourne are overflowing with possums. Are there any attempts to provide artificial nesting boxes in these cities and establish Powerful Owls?
