  • Sky Patterson, from the University of Southern California defeated several competitors to earn the 2014 Grand Champion title at the 50th anniversary of the Long Beach International Martial Arts Championships. Steve Cooper and many volunteers hosted the event with a resounding commitment to the martial arts as inspired by the original tournament promoter Mr. Ed Parker.
    As you can see in the video, Sky Patterson’s Bullwhip demonstration was truly spectacular and effective in the competition. Although there were other great competitors, this weapon dominated the competition without the use of any audio music tracks. The whips and cracks of the weapon provided more noise than anyone could ask for. Although the Chinese Martial Arts are filled with many exotic and stunning weapons passed down for millennia, the Shaolin Bullwhip is one that can surely gather attention.
    As you can see from the final moments of the video, all of the competitors were wearing Karate Uniforms. In addition the panel of judges were all Japanese style marital artists with the exception of one Kung Fu Shifu. Although there is no question that all martial arts have great value and wisdom passed down from generations of practitioners, Sky was clearly outnumbered 1 to 8.
    However Sky’s resounding success is a testament to the beauty and wisdom passed down by so many generations of Shaolin Kung Fu practitioners. The culture and art that has been preserved for so many generations is what inspires so many people from around the world to make the leap from enthusiasts to practitioners.
    For those who attended the 2014 Long Beach International Martial Arts Tournament, may we never stop inspiring humanity through culture, peace, and art.
    Sincerely,
    Shifu Sal Redner

    I got interested in the whip mainly due to cinema, television, and video games- and dang that guy looks so badass. I commend you and all the hard work that you must have gone through to be so cool

    While not as cleanly executed compared to a dedicated Shaolin practitioner (understandably so), it was beautifully performed and showed good understanding of the whip's basic use. Hopefully, this practitioner commits to studying the whip even further for more practical and varied uses (Anthony DeLongis concepts).

    Asking for a friend, what specific kind of whip is that (material, length, and handle specs). Dw hes not so stupid that he thinks a whip would be a viable weapon and promises each and every enemy he has will definitely stay alive no matter what.

    i'm honestly curious what the practical uses a whip would have in combat over traditional weapons

    • @Battl3Chaser
      @Battl3Chaser 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A few thoughts: the bullwhip IS a traditional martial art weapon. Yuan family style muyang bian go back to when martial arts training was forbidden (late 1200's ~ Kublai Khan.) The routine, like most Shaolin sets, 'shows' more than it 'does.' That spin kick into the splits at 1:00 reminds me of a Wudang horsetail whisk form I once saw. In any case it makes for an entertaining and flashy demonstration. However you don't need a shaolin physique to turn a bullwhip into a serious weapon. In fact, I trim my small tree and shrubs in the front yard with a 6ft bullwhip- just for practice and to enjoy a cigar. If you can crack it; the whip will cut skin or take someone's eye- that simple. Even if it doesn't 'crack' you will discourage any attacker(s) by simply using a horizontal "snake killer" whip crack; I promise. At 6 feet it is easy to sweep someone's leg. Also most traditional weapons will trigger a metal detector. My whip does not.

    • @uhnutherdude
      @uhnutherdude 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Whip-based martial arts (like Latigo y Daga and Shaolin) use whips around 4-6 ft in length for faster strikes since longer whips take longer to swing and require more space.

    People ask
    = How to control fishing-rod
    = Why don't practice swords
    = Taichi - why shoulders twitch
    Short whip to hook butt-cheeks and foot. One whip per hand. Do taichi. Then go fishing rod shopping.

    To understand the difference between eternal soft style kung fu and the hard styles that we see today is in essence that this is a whipping whereas the hard styles are like getting hit by a two by four a medium style would be in between a whip and getting hit by a 2x4 now you can distinguish between hard medium and soft styles of martial art

    A lot of wasted oppourtunity in this routine, offsetting a lot of the wind-ups with sidearm cracks wouldn't go astray.
