I hate the price of the studio display, but I absolutely love iMac displays. Very clear, sharp, great colors, and good sustained brightness. That for me is what will make the price justified, especially since I need to stare at it for many hours a day. Lack of pro-motion is a bummer though. Biggest concerns with Eve: uncertainty around delivery, and has much less sustained brightness than the SD. But the price on is right.
This was the comparison I’ve been eager to watch! I’ve ordered the eve glossy to ship in June (maybe). I hope the glossy bumps the visual experience a bit closer to the studio. Can’t beat the price and ports ✌️
Had the Studio and took it back. Not because of the image, but because of the price. Especially with a really buggy camera that wouldn’t work with MS Teams. I was looking at the Eve to pull double duty with PC and Mac.
There is a big issue with the display that reviews have not yet addressed. No its not the unacceptably horrendous webcam. The issue is that the monitor runs its own operating system (IOS) to manage the camera, microphone and speakers. Like any device running a consumer based operating system, it can't be run indefinitely without restarting it or you run into issues. If you don't restart your iPad or iPhone for weeks or months you will eventually experience all kind of issues. I got my studio display on March 18. yesterday my camera started acting up, then the microphone and speakers would stop working sporadically. After hours with Apple support it was determined the monitor needs to restart. BUT there is no way to do it, it has no power button and no way to actuality shut it down or reboot/restart properly. So the only way to do restart the display is to unplug it from the power source for a minute and plug it back in. We did so and its working fine again. However, doing it that way means you are crashing the build-in OS rather than properly restarting it. That of course can potentially damage the display just like crashing your computer every time you want to restart it.
Very interesting thought. My only thought is that there is no user writing or changes happening to the os during use like an iPhone or Mac. Like with iPhone it boots a snapshot of the system that is read only so I actually am not sure there is much risk from pulling the plug.
In addition to what @Jerry Schulze mentioned, modern OS's (like all OSs from Apple in the last few years) have important system files in a separate volume that is only mutated on a system upgrade (with code digitally signed by Apple). Mutable data would be stored on a separate volume with easily overwriteable data. Unless the storage controller suffers from bitrot, it should be OK.
@@JerrySchulze theyre shipping June 2022 to us plebians, but they've shipped the glossy to reviewers like you long ago already. You should try to get your hands on one!
Such a great rundown, thanks Jerry. One correction: it's a TB4 cable supplied with the Studio, not a TB3. TB4 is needed to use the other display usb-c ports at full bandwidth.
Glad to hear it. I'm not sure I trust Apple's pivoting technology since all my iMacs were notorious for their inability to hold the display position and I had to support the display with a box under it to keep it in position.
9:22 This is false. The cable that Apple sells separately for $129 is essentially a 2 meter Thunderbolt cable and it's the one that comes in the box with a Pro Display XDR. The one that comes with a Studio Display is a 1 meter Thunderbolt cable.
I have been using the Apple LG monitor for 2 years and while the plastic housing is cheap, the display really pops and is great for my professional needs. I will likely go the ASD route even though the price seems too high. I use a Herman Miller Ollin monitor arm so I will be able to save $ by forgoing the stand purchase. Finally, do you have any expertise on the ASD standard vs nano-textured? Thanks.
Was really hoping for a do it all monitor from Apple and was disappointed with the release. Lovely monitor no doubt but not what I needed or was looking for. Just picked up the Eve Spectrum for £500 next day delivery from a private seller and I have to say I'm blown away by it, literally ticks every box. I wasn't going to buy the stand if I purchased direct but it was included in the purchase with the private sale and I'm glad it was, its better then I could have imagined and although I was planning on using a Vesa, I will be using this stand instead.
@@JerrySchulze Sorry I can't open any of your links.. If I know the USB-C connection on that monitor has only a 4k 60hz capability , or was there an Update that increases the bandwith? Or are you using some kind of Thunderbolt 4 to HDMI 2.1 adapter. I'm really interested cause I totally wanna buy an M1 Mac product but I didn't because I was not able to connect it to a high refresh 4k display.
One big problem of 4K 27” display is the text size. Native, the text is too small. But at 1080p (2x), the text is too large. Something in the middle, the text is blurry. You wont get this problem with the 5K panel.
Agree. I also would like a Ford F-150 lightning for an XL price. Yes joking but these displays choose different priorities and one needs to decide which ones are more important. Thanks so much for watching!
I have the Eve Spectrum, and I find it's kind of great, despite a few firmware issues, (that they're constantly fixing). Also, what type of support do you expect to get for the monitor that you bought on Ebay?
no one has has for proof of purchase or anything other than the serial number. They have not denied me they just have not responded. I think most companies honor the warranty at a minimum from the build or original sale date.
So TLDW: The ASD is pretty and fits the aesthetic of other Apple devices. It's got the optimal resolution for MacOS and is really quite a nice display so long as you're not after HDR, need more than 1 input or more than 60Hz. Buy it if you are comfortable with the enormous price and the limitations listed above. It fits a niche in the market that other manufacturers haven't addressed which is 27" 5k displays (except a old LG display which has some issues). If it were a PC monitor it would be bad value but it's not, it an Apple monitor so due to it's lack of competition it basically wins by default.
Nah, I would just buy 2 eve monitor with glass option vs 2 Apple Studio Panel. The performance is similar while half the price. Color is very closed with expect 100% P3 on Glossy texture glass
uff i did it now, on the side of the macbook 16 with mini led it looks awful in the blacks (i do video editing with small color corrections myself). still gonna keep it as its the only 5k option. but as soon as some apple mini led that size drops, ill get that.

Thanks for this video! This decision is literally holding up my entire workstation upgrade. I was hoping to finally replace my 27in iMac from 2013 but I feel like a lot of us just didn't get what we wanted from Apple here. I do mostly photo/video work so 5k with clean 2x scaling and the ability to watch a 4k video at native res with space around it feel like top priorities to me--but the lack of local dimming zones/mini-led and the limited IO feel like a huge miss. I don't think I can bring myself to order the Eve though--seems too risky and I don't want to reward bad actors in this space.
Great review. But I think this is a no-brainer, the studio Display gives you a camera and speakers that are really great sounding. The eve does not offer either so you have to go buy those separately although it does not equal the price difference the build quality of the studiously greatly makes up for it (all plastic versus metal). For mean the support alone from Apple is worth the cost difference. Not even going to talk about idea of ordering something and not knowing if you would ever get it.
I have really liked your videos lately. If you would be so kind to consider some constructive criticism? Your videos are consistently less bright than everything else I watch on TH-cam. This may be intentional, but just wanted to let you know.
Great video, I will link it to my Italian review on iksnet channel. Studio Display wins for me, sure it isn’t perfect but I need and appreciated the differences. Ordered one last week.
Quite a good comparison. As a side note, these tech reviewers mostly told us not to buy products with the promise of a software update to fix the current issues. Now that Apple has fallen under that category, they are so reluctant to say the same words yet they claim to be unbiased. Apple makes good things but so do other companies. I just find it odd and really untrustworthy when reviewers treat Apple differently.
Hi Jerry. I’m having some low range bass distortion on my studio display speakers. Out of the box! Vocals and most audio sounds terrific but when the bass kicks in a few songs, the thump sounds like a torn drum 🥁 even at half volume. The same songs at same settings are sounding amazing on my 24” M1 iMac. These displays are not even available on display at the physical stores, where I live, to go and double check if it’s widespread or something that’s normal. Could you please check on your studio display? Apple Music Equaliser Preamp in neutral Rock setting Apple Music preferences Sound enhancer Slider at 3/4th Thanks indeed 🙏🏻🥃
Your review was fair and informative. However I cringed when you said the Apple Display was $1100 more when in fact the Apple Display comes with several additional features like camera, speakers, mic, cable etc. that should be deducted from that $1100. When you take those items into account the $1100 difference is cut in half.
absolutely and I did say that those options are built in and provide a better all in one setup. I didn't focus on them because of time. I also did not go in depth on the gaming benefits of the eve.
Outstanding review! Fair and extremely balanced. Yes, the Eve is $1,100 less but that's not factoring in the cost of a quality webcam, noise canceling mic and desktop speakers, granted those items together aren't extremely expensive so the Eve is still a huge savings over the Studio Display. However if you have limited desk space and/or don't like a lot of dangling cables the Studio Display might be a better solution. I suspect, however, you anchored the video on the topic of support because it's one of the most important aspects when comparing the two displays. One of my mottos when it comes to spending a little extra is "What's a good night's sleep worth?", so if that means spending a little extra knowing that you'll have fewer problems then the extra expense is worth it. If the Eve fails in one or another and you can't get support then you haven't saved $1,100, you've wasted $800. As the resident IT person in my family and circle of friends, I'm always recommending a Mac and while I'm fully aware that there are Windows-based systems that are much less expensive I always mention the unrivaled support of Apple, which is great for people who aren't technically savvy or need some, a little or a lot of handholding along the way. I'm fortunate enough to finally be in a position to upgrade my now 10-year old iMac and I have no reservations whatsoever in buying the Mac Studio and Studio Display. I think it's worth noting that there aren't any direct competitive products to the Studio Display. There's no 5K monitor with a built-in webcam, mic array and speakers with the level of build quality and support that Apple has, so I imagine Apple took notice of that and priced it accordingly. I'm not saying I agree with the $1,600 price tag. I would've preferred to see this priced at $999 with a $400 premium for an adjustable stand that also rotates or a $200 height adjustable stand and a $400 or $500 stand that also rotates but, again, because there's really no direct competitor I can see why Apple might want to take advantage of that gap in the market.
Yep, everyone really needs to figure out what features matter to them and decide what is best. For me, design and build quality, and support are as important as display features.
@@JerrySchulze -- I really liked your other video where you talk about the benefits of the Studio Display being calibrated to the same color profile as the MacBook, iPad and iPhone, which is a huge if you're working across different platforms. To take a project from MacBook to Mac Studio to iMac means never having to adjust and readjust your colors because it appears different across each respective device. Frankly it's that attention to detail that makes Apple's portfolio of devices worth the extra expense. Or maybe Apple isn't the only company that does that. I'd be curious to know if a Samsung monitor shares the same color profile with a Galaxy S22 and the Galaxy Tab.
My base Studio Max purchase depleted my computer budget (and then some...) but if/when I can upgrade my monitor the LG Ultrafine 5K looks like it would be a better option for me, especially over the Eve. I've had an LG 29" ultrawide for a few years now and have been very satisfied with the quality.
@@Victor-rw2je I haven’t scrutinised it, and it all looks really, really good. I was waiting for Dell to do a replacement of the excellent u2720q. It’s the best monitor I could buy for the money
What's funny is that we Mac users don't care about refresh rates. The resolution (5k) and colour accuracy is the most important thing to us. Then PC people don't care about resolution, the first thing they want to know is "what is the refresh rate". Once you use a 5K glass display (27" iMac or Apple Studio), you can't go back to a 4k monitor for main display. You lose nearly half your resolution and text looks like poop.
So basically it’s just the higher refresh rate that attracts me on the eve. Yeah keeping my studio display. It’s awesome. What would make me upgrade is a 5k mini led display 120hz for about $3000, that would be a good deal. 6k mini led 120 hz 32 inch for $3500 would be super attractive!
@@tronam - Thunderbolt offers DSC (display stream compression), which increases the bandwidth by approximately a factor of 3. It is used on the Pro Display XDR to achieve 6k60 HDR10 and is supported by most Macs since 2018 or so, including all M1s, even the iPad Pro. I’m still waiting for Apple (or anyone) to use this to support 120 Hz @ 5k or 6k; the technological capacity is definitely there.
@@tronam - Refer to the section “Refresh frequency limits for standard video” in the article _DisplayPort_ on Wikipedia (make sure to scroll down to the 2nd table that includes the effects of DSC). The available video bandwidth in Thunderbolt 4 is 25.92 GHz and the uncompressed bandwidth required for 6k60 HDR10 is 40.6 GHz. The only way this works is DSC, and many happy Pro Display XDR customers will tell you it does, in fact, work. I agree that (to my knowledge) the computer and display manufacturers have not gotten together and produced 5K-8K displays that refresh at a rate higher than 60 Hz, but it certainly seems to be supported by Thunderbolt 4 and DisplayPort 1.4.
i have the eve glossy on order. chose that over the studio display because of the price (can pretty much get 2 for the price of 1 studio display) and the high refresh. a little nervous because of the support and infamous shipping issues 😬. this video pretty much confirms most of my thoughts and suspicions, so thx for making this 🙏

A great alternative that seems to be overlooked would be the LG 27GN950-B. It's pretty much like the Eve Spectrum, except you can actually buy it, and you can receive support for it. Yes it's very gamery, but if you pop it on a VESA mount, it in my opinion looks as minimalistic as the Eve. Also, as it is LG, I would expect it to have even better colors and HDR tone mapping compared to the Eve. I'm still personally still going to wait for a 5K 144hz monitor tho
Yep my issue with the LG is the design and stand design but understand that may not be an issue for others. It seems 5k 144/120hz is not possible through thunderbolt now so may need to wait for something new.
The difference in sharpness is less to do with the difference in resolution and more to do with apple's integer scaling issues. The Mac struggles to scale things sharply to resolutions that aren't integer multiples.
@@JerrySchulze I am from Canada. I have seen that monitor in person couple of days ago. All aluminum construction. It's much lighter than the ASD but still pretty well built. Height adjustable without paying extra ;-) The 3:2 scale, for some people, may need to take a while to get used to.
Both are nice options, but too expensive :( I gut the 28.2" MateView with 4K+ for 450€ instead and it's more than fine! I use it at 2560x1707 GUI scaling (1.5x factor)
If you want a budget, gaming display and want more ports, the the Eve Spectrum 4K is right for you as it has 144HZ refresh rate but if you want a not cheap feeling, full aluminium build display and want 5K and higher brightness basically a better display, and want to use it with your Mac, then the Studio Display is right for you.
Even if your price conscious why would still recommend the Eve? There are many other "IMO" better options than the Eve compared to the Studio Display. BenQ, LG and even Dell have "IMO" better options than the Eve.

5k is undervalued, I'm ready to pay the difference whatsoever
Why compare a 5K with a 4K? o.O 5K is a specific tool if you think it like that, you can slap all the refresh rate and whatnot to the Eve Spectrum and it will still be a 4K monitor.
I really don't understand why the aluminum build of the Studio Display is a selling point. Once you plug it in, you're not going to interact with the aluminum at all or even see it behind the chunkier than average bezels. I'd wager a good bit of the $1,600 starting price is because of the pricier build materials. You're paying a premium for something that's essentially irrelevant.
design,. materials, and aesthetic do matter to lots of people. Why does Ford make an f-150 xl and an f-150 limited? For upgrades in design and materials that some people care about.
Wrong. No other 5K display offers better features at that pricepoint. Next best thing is Dell 8K, 275ppi, nits are less than 600. That’s going for $3,900. ASD features, 5K 218ppi, 600nits (most monitors avg 350nits), color calibrated & accurate P3, spatial audio speakers (added bonus), A13 chip for future proofing firmware updates, all encased in aluminum package that costs $300 more than the LG 5K.
@@JerrySchulze Right, but the difference is that different trim levels of a car provide different features. You also will regularly see and interact with any aesthetic and material changes done to a car. With a monitor, unless you're in an open space environment where monitors don't back up to a wall, you won't ever interact with or see the aluminum (especially because there are no buttons on it to necessitate touching it). I agree that the build looks and feels great. I just don't see that novelty lasting once the monitor is set up.
@@MockManor Okay. I was talking about the build of the monitor not being a notable feature because people won't see or interact with it once they've set it up. Literally never mentioned the quality of the display itself but go off I guess.
@@eando97 I see your point and the difference you made with Jerry's F-150 analogy. Likely most won't interact with the display. Some of the cost of the display is due to the pricier materials. yes. But how much less would the monitor really cost if it were made of plastic housing? $100? $200? At that point LG's monitor's price wouldn't make any sense. Could the ASD replaced LG's pricepoint and discontinue LG's ultrafine 5k? Yes. But with plastic housing it would not make itself too much of a distinction from other monitors, and Apple is all about distinction. It's all about the detail with Apple, even if some customers don't care for the small things. Besides, at least for someone like me that interacts with their monitors by switching to portrait view often, the squeaking of the plastic always is of annoyance for me. Not a huge deal, but still annoying. Besides, the metal housing also helps it with its stability/sturdiness, which is an important feature for most people. all of these reasons are why imacs arent made of plastic.

Nice pointless essay. You unplug and replug it, problem solved. I doubt you'll have to do that very often.

Pobably right about being TB4 cable, not sure about the other part.
Your shirt make me think the video is buffering lol. BTW great review.
Just checked EBay and they have one used Eve 4K for 1000.00, so I’m thinking that the Studio Display wins this round.
Is there still issues with running windows 11 with parallels on the studio display?
Honestly, this was a fantastic review and I'm still totally undecided!
Honestly, if you can afford the Studio display you will not regret it.
2:00 monitor wobble is only an issue if it happens during everyday use, not if it only happens during an earthquake
Side to side shouldn’t happen with regular use. Both do well with front to back.
I’ve been awaiting this video!! I just received my studio display today with height adjustment. It’s amazing!!
its sooo good!
Glad to hear it. I'm not sure I trust Apple's pivoting technology since all my iMacs were notorious for their inability to hold the display position and I had to support the display with a box under it to keep it in position.
I have owned a lot of iMacs and never seen this issue.
If the studio display allowed for pc use I would buy it in a heartbeat
9:22 This is false. The cable that Apple sells separately for $129 is essentially a 2 meter Thunderbolt cable and it's the one that comes in the box with a Pro Display XDR. The one that comes with a Studio Display is a 1 meter Thunderbolt cable.
Yep you are correct. But it does come with a cable.
Jerry, I love your reviews. 👍 Straight forward, very informative and showing all the details. Thank you. I really appreciate it.
Thanks.
Great comparison! I hope you get the Glossy version of the Eve and do this comparison again!

Excellent review / comparison!

One big problem of 4K 27” display is the text size. Native, the text is too small. But at 1080p (2x), the text is too large. Something in the middle, the text is blurry. You wont get this problem with the 5K panel.
Thanks. I did cover this in the video and thanks for watching!
Great video! Keep up the good work.
Thanks!
Honestly choosing between the two wouldn’t be so hard if the Studio Display just had XDR and ProMotion.
Agree. I also would like a Ford F-150 lightning for an XL price. Yes joking but these displays choose different priorities and one needs to decide which ones are more important. Thanks so much for watching!
If you don't need the monitors to make a living, you don't need to get it. They are so pros who invest in them and make more money from it.
Your shirt was really getting me but I love it. Where did you get it?
Old navy?
with the scaled resolution how does it behave compared to the native for macos, or the 5k?
I have the Eve Spectrum, and I find it's kind of great, despite a few firmware issues, (that they're constantly fixing). Also, what type of support do you expect to get for the monitor that you bought on Ebay?
It’s a device still within the 3 year warranty.
@@JerrySchulze wouldn't that contract and warranty only come through from the original purchaser?
no one has has for proof of purchase or anything other than the serial number. They have not denied me they just have not responded. I think most companies honor the warranty at a minimum from the build or original sale date.
Still, the Studio Display, despite the high price, lack of proper ergonomic adjustment and the relatively modest refresh rate.
i can’t get past the studio displays price tag with HUGE bezels that will look even more dated in the coming years
So TLDW: The ASD is pretty and fits the aesthetic of other Apple devices.
Color is very closed with expect 100% P3 on Glossy texture glass
just picked up the studio display sadly only available in the standard mount. i still didnt dare to unpack it and looking for alternatives.... haha
uff i did it now, on the side of the macbook 16 with mini led it looks awful in the blacks (i do video editing with small color corrections myself). still gonna keep it as its the only 5k option. but as soon as some apple mini led that size drops, ill get that.
According to Dave2D the glossy Eve Spectrum is really good. Any chance you'll revisit the Eve Spectrum Glossy using with mac's?

First, Great video Jerry! And yeah availability between the two will probably be the main denominator for most people.
nice!
What scaling did you use for text? Was the 4k default scaling good enough?
Hi they were both set to 1440. By default the max tries to make a 4k 1080 which is 2x and too big. at native 4k everything is too small.
Are your videos just 1080p by design? i never seem to be able to get the 4k option on them.
Interesting. I see 4k option.
i cant even find the eve ion ebay, or at least one that ships to europe, this is hell.
Great video as always, Jerry! how did you use 4k 144hz on mac? which cable did you use?
So what would be the best alternative affordable version of Apple Studio Display ? how do the new Oled monitors compare? Do higher-Hz monitors tend to be better for reducing eyestrain?"
Great video, did u test the new dell monitors 27 and 32 inch? They look awesome too
Thanks for this video!
Thanks. Somewhat a choice, somewhat my low skill level. lol/
Great video, I will link it to my Italian review on iksnet channel. Studio Display wins for me, sure it isn’t perfect but I need and appreciated the differences. Ordered one last week.

How long did it take for the button on the Eve to break? It didn’t sound like you had it very long. That’s unacceptable.
I bought it on eBay and no did not have it long. Manufacture date was last June.
In my previous studio display video I discussed the camera. I think I said something about if the camera is important to you hold off.

Hi Jerry.
I’m having some low range bass distortion on my studio display speakers. Out of the box!

good balanced comparison, ty
Thanks listening to my request for and the great comparison! Rather uneven... The button and availability/support issues give more to consider.
I love the eve which is now called dough, but my concern is that there is no support for it. Horrible customer service out of Hong Kong
Considering I could get the Studio Display for $100 off due to the Education Pricing, and it offers a webcam, mic and speakers, I’m all for it!
That's awesome!
The thunderbolt cable they include is only 1 meter long, the 129$ one is 1.8 meters. Its very cheap of them not to include a longer cable.

@@lutzaby1997 which one?
Won’t be possible until Thunderbolt 5. Even reducing to 8-bit color would require 53Gbps of bandwidth and 10-bit pushes that even higher.
@@altosack TB4’s maximum supported refresh rate at 5K-8K is 60Hz.
I agree that (to my knowledge) the computer and display manufacturers have not gotten together and produced 5K-8K displays that refresh at a rate higher than 60 Hz, but it certainly seems to be supported by Thunderbolt 4 and DisplayPort 1.4.

its not about 4k / 5k - its about the glossy coating of the apple studio
i have the eve glossy on order. chose that over the studio display because of the price (can pretty much get 2 for the price of 1 studio display) and the high refresh. a little nervous because of the support and infamous shipping issues 😬. this video pretty much confirms most of my thoughts and suspicions, so thx for making this 🙏

@@JerrySchulzeThunderbolt 4 does actually support 5K at high refresh rates in what’s appereantly called ”DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0”

But can you get one? TBD.
@@JerrySchulze I can't due to my low budget and availability in my country.
The difference in sharpness is less to do with the difference in resolution and more to do with apple's integer scaling issues. The Mac struggles to scale things sharply to resolutions that aren't integer multiples.
3:40 the reason why 4k sucks on macOS. Unless the scaling is exactly at x2, font rendering is not good.

The statement makes me really want to return the Apple Studio Display and get Eve Display instead. So much for this offer
Even if your price conscious why would still recommend the Eve? There are many other "IMO" better options than the Eve compared to the Studio Display. BenQ, LG and even Dell have "IMO" better options than the Eve.
5k is undervalued, I'm ready to pay the difference whatsoever
Why compare a 5K with a 4K? o.O
5K is a specific tool if you think it like that, you can slap all the refresh rate and whatnot to the Eve Spectrum and it will still be a 4K monitor.
A great review. I choose Apple.
Awesome. Why?
@@JerrySchulze I think ultimately a monitor for a discerning photographer or an artist is about the quality of the picture. And it seems to me that the studio display’s picture quality is better.
