  • What you have all been waiting for... The second part of the surge protector build. In this half of the two part series on building a surge protector from scratch I do the wiring and test out the finished product.

    Warning:
    This project involves playing 120v if you aren't completely comfortable with that type of stuff don't mess with it. If you play with 120v and you end up all crispy I don't want to hear about it.

    When using a metal box, the ground wire (green) should also be connected to the box.

    What is the value of the MOV I should be looking for besides the 130v? Also I can't find the neon lights you referred to. I've seen the fixtures before but for LED lights. I guess any light would work as long as it fits in the circuit without blowing up

    meh, cutting off 10cm of perfectly good cable?

    perhaps a plastic box would be a better choice … ?

    Could we simply instal circuit breaker type B instead of fuses? Would it do the same thing? Or 50ms that it is triggered time is enough to damage devices?

      +Sergey Romanov Just an opinion, but I would think the fuse should blow instantly or the surge current flowing through the MOV could cause the MOV to burn up or even catch fire.

    Did the Chinese mass produce this yet?Love the design.Nothing like peace of mind using double redundancy .How did it serve you after all these years?

    Aye, aye Iain, both videos were not only very educational, but entertaining with your 'dry' sense of humour. One of the 'other' issues I think about is, when you plug into your main wall outlet there is a sudden inrush of power to any equipment you happen to have connected. Do you think a polarised capacitor of the correct voltage (but what uF value ?) across the hot/neutral would halt the AC's enthusiasm to reach your valuable test bench ? BTW, the build you showed will apply to the UK, you just have to alter the component values to allow for 240 volts.

    If you touch the metal box whilst the MOVs are dumping excess current to ground, won't it give you a shock?

    • @Raven43150
      @Raven43150 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kevin Solway No. It should not give you a shock because the case is grounded, so there should be zero volts on the case.

    Hi, What is the part number for the MOVs and where could I get them? Thanks.

    What a great way to burn your house down and have an insurance claim denied for the damage.

    • @mymgoi7599

      Why?

    • @chadhidalgo5763
      @chadhidalgo5763 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Only because the insurance underwriters are in league with the electricians at underwriters laboratory to force people to buy things instead of making them.

      It's a myth. Insurance can't deny your claim because you made a mistake or did something stupid. That's what insurance is for. Insurance claims on things like this can only be denied if you lie to them about something. For example, if you say your roof is 2 years old and it is actually 30, they may choose to deny a claim caused by a leaky roof.
