  • Today, Collier County, Florida is one of the fastest growing areas in the country. In 1923, when the county was formed, it was little more than a remote, tropical wilderness with no electricity, no phones nor a single mile of paved road. At the time, fewer than 1200 people lived in a handful of settlements scattered across an area the size of Delaware.
The sunshine state has a rich and colorful history. For hundreds of years the state has attracted dreamers, opportunists, inventors and fortune-seekers. WGCU's Untold Stories aims to preserve the history of Southwest Florida communities.

Seminoles….4000 years of living in a swamp with countless gators, snakes and biting insects. On top of that, hunting, gathering and beginning to grow food, amongst quicksand bogs. I would have died a very young man.

I don't doubt disease accounted for much of the Calusa demise, but something tells me they were also just slaughtered

This isn't a full length documentary. It was just an overview of a vast time period, and we left many other important details out as well. But that's what happens in production meetings and the boss wants to keep these around 25 minutes (plenty of data shows that if they're too long people don't click). Just the way the business works.
