I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Naples is my home town. My parents immigrated their in the 60's. It was so wonderful to see how all the familiar landmarks came to be and from whom all our local streets were named after! Some of these I knew but most I didn't. And just to see the old pics and see how far my sleepy "little town" had come by the time I was born was amazing. Knowing the full history of my hometown just makes me love it and treasure it more!!😊❤
I remember seeing "The Hole in the Wall" on old maps in the center of the 2 national parks, Everglades & Big Cypress NAtional Parks. Old Seminolea homes on Tamiami Trail were also on these old maps Gone now.
I know how you feel. I now live in the Midwest (never thought I would end up here!) But every time I go back home, I lament the laid-back beach town I grew up in.
But by today's standards it's still a small town. I think a lot of people lament what it used to be, and miss out on what it actually is. And it's still beautiful there.
I was a 12 year old kid in 69, I thought Naples was a paradise, unlimited spaces to park for fishing n swimming, it was beautiful n clean no trash on streets no slums , today its disgusting no place to park to access beach , over development all along the beach with condo's, no access to beach and parking meters everywhere and the only way to walk on the beach is to PAY 25 cents for 15 minutes parking fee !!!!
Unfortunately, l did not appreciate how wonderful it was to grow up in Naples (I couldn't wait to get the heck out of there.) But now having lived through out the US and traveled/lived outside of it. I treasure Naples. True it is not the "paradise" it was when we grew up.) It is still far cleaner and more beautiful than most places. It is interesting that what began as "not at all fashionable and the people did what they pleased. Has become excessively pretentious. But I must say I still prefer it to most every other I have place i have lived.
I went to Naples in the early 1980s on a Florida road trip with my wife. We stayed at a hotel on the beach. We had supper at a Steak House, The Pewter Mug. After that, we decided to hit a few bars and chat with the locals. Not much going on for a Saturday night. The bar we were in called the Last Call for Alcohol at Nine Thirty we were WTF? The bartender told us they open up at 05:30 the next morning, hs said to look around the average age of Naples is 80. They all go to bed by 10.

I lived in Naples for a few years back in the early 1980's. Had to leave when the local government became to dominating. Raised property taxes and dreamt up a lot of unrealistic building codes and other regulations, not the people or place I wanted to live around.

What a great video! Makes me love Naples even more now.
Moved here from Massachusetts four years ago I love Naples thank you for the history!
Just came back today from a visit there. All gated communities & businesses. I'm sure it's changed so so much!
Did you notice the office chair on the boat?
REally interesting...esp. having lived there.....

I was born and raised in Naples and I loved it, but it's gotten way too big! The small town appeal has been gone for years.
i left Ft Myers 20 years ago for same reasons Paradise ruined by developers

Who did they buy the land from?
You'd be hard pressed to find a bunch of guys posing in suits and ties in the heat of Florida now without some A/C around.
arent you candice
I was thinking along those lines too....how uncomfortable
You’d be surprised though, rare, but not impossible
they sure lifted that cup alot
Why didn't they clean up and rebuild Naples after Hurricane Ian? Naples is ruined.

Tragic developments for dear ole Naples...that I remember well...from the 50's ...even into the 80's.
Yea progress is scary. Imagine what your property would be worth now
At several times in the video, I felt shameful that people flooded the area to over fish and hunt.
