If a killer incinerates the bones and disposes of the head in a large body of water, WHY would he then bury soft tissue, hair, etc. in his own basement? Makes absolutely NO SENSE.
Dr. Crippen was hiding how he got rid of the body, but the findings in the basement that he didn’t do, that’s why it makes no sense. The police were trying to incriminate him by placing the skin, hair, bones etc., in the basement.
Just a thought but what if the wife murdered one of her lovers, disposed his body and then done a runner leaving her husband to take the blame. It's not like she was a very nice person after all.

I thought you couldn't burn bone in a regular stove/oven, that the temperature just wouldn't be hot enough to completely destroy bone. I can understand why they did a runner; they were trying to get away from the scandal and start a new life together. I've read a lot about this case and I still can't decide if he was guilty or innocent. Leaning towards...ha! I'll never tell! lol

Honestly, I don't know what conclusions to draw from this case. Especially considering the fact that the body found in Crippen's home was proven via DNA to be a man. To me, each possibility seems to have some merit. I'd be curious to know if there were other murder cases in that period that local police handled which had unusual circumstances as regards the finding of the body. Definitely, there's a lot of unanswered questions here.
A victim of wife’s unfaithfulness. What a waste of intelligence. He should just have left her. As a result he lost more than he gained. I know it is easy to say that than done.

unless she did it as a way to get back at her husband... think of it this way, what if she left her furs and jewelrey to get people thinking hed done away with her? as a way of getting back at him for the divorce... maybe she took the money she drew out (cause if he had that money why was he pawning her jewels?) ran off to a lover in usa or other country and hoped hed be blamed for murderering her? cause in honesty she sounds like a husband beater

Dr Crippen was born and raised in Coldwater, MI and graduated from high school in Coldwater. He moved away afterwards as did his parents. I lived in Coldwater for several years and had heard this story. It was also on a tv show. Great story telling! It's enjoyable to listen to you.

Enjoyed? I loved it! I could have listened for a lot longer. I was always interested in this case but the shows I saw did not grab my interest as well as yours did. You have such a flair for story telling. I absolutely love the pictures that come to life as well. After this new evidence/information that has come to light it does make one wonder if he was truly innocent of her murder or at the very least make Dr. Crippen's circumstances a bit more understandable. Not to say I am condoning murder in any way but if his wife humiliated him and threatened to ruin him financially and professionally, I can see in a fit of rage or desperation of becoming destitute he could have done it.

I learned of this story on a PBS station some time ago called "Secrets of Scotland Yard"and this was one of the stories that was featured ...had no idea that Cora was Crippen's second wife and that she was such a shrew...still, she didn't deserve her fate...thanks, Oddie for filling in the details! Well done! 👍
But was she actually a "shrew" or is that just what Crippen told the police and press about her? The way Oddie spun it, she was an entitled brat who wanted to be an opera singer, but she was no good. How then did she go on to earn the bulk of their money by working in an entertainment hall (presumably singing) when her husband was a doctor? Even back then doctors were not poorly paid. Also, she had all these friends that apparently cared about her, one of them loved her enough go all the way to America to figure out what happened to her. Crippen was literally the only one that disliked her that intensely. And you can't fault a woman for wanting to take mostly *her own money* to leave a man that it was proven was having an affair and who made it clear to her for years that he basically hated her. The only person in this equation that even stole anything was Crippen so he could give her things to his mistress. This just seems like a fairly clear case of projection on Crippen's part.

I never did believe that Crippen murdered his wife, make of that what you will. Many people "do a runner" from fear when the evidence is against them. It seems likely that police did plant remains, heaven knows Thats not unheard of (back then) who knows what Crippen actually WAS guilty of, there may well have been other people with their own motives involved. Every time I hear about this particular case I feel very sad. A tragic case all round. Thank you Oddie once again for a brilliant presentation!🥰

Dear Oddie, I was so excited when I received your notification for this video yesterday. I watched it twice and am still shaking my head. For instance, if he took the head , why did he leave the scalp with hair and roots? Scotland Yard's first visit did not detect any foul smells or anything out of place. How did they happen to walk in - the second time - and had to cover their noses?. The DNA is that of a male, etc? Oddie, I love the sifter. It is in such good condition. And a good keepsake. As crazy as it may seem I don't think he killed his wife. I think the secretary may have done it. The wife wouldn't have left her jewelry ect behind and just taken off. And the dogs didn't find anything first time round but maybe coal had been there at the time and if so shouldn't there STILL have been coal there? The detective was ticted that he couldn't find Jack The Ripper and wanted maybe to make a name for himself with the doctor's case. (?) He also got 500£ for 'cracking' the case!!! ' IF ' the bits of a body was found in the COAL BIN then how was the body bits 'found' by 'lose bricks' that 'THE DETECTIVE' happened (?) to find. Also the PJ TOP with 'that' label was the only bit of clothing 'found' and in the Dr's dresser the PJ's bottom (but no top) was found. Did they ever check the 'OTHER' PJ's in the dresser? ALSO if one wants to get rid of a body why chop it up, all that nasty & messy work to then dump some body bits in the celler of YOUR own home. THEN put the wrong LIME on the body bits ? The lime on the bits PRESERVED the stuff found ...the OTHER LIME would have DISTORYED IT. I think the detective may have put the stuff there & the lime that was used to make sure there was the stuff to be found. (Just my guess) Don't you think the doctor would have known what kind of lime to use and IF he killed his wife wouldn't he want to get rid of the WHOLE remains? If the detective didn't set the stuff then maybe BOTH the doctor and his lover got rid of the wife then not wanting to get caught tried to 'split'. Guess we may never know. The secretary wasn't the nicest person in my opinion and she certainly 'cashed in' on the case afterwords, PLUS she went to great lengths to change her name like how many times? Hyoscine Hydrobromide was also used in abortions. Didn't you mention that the doctor's wife had a still born? There is a street sgin with Crippen's family name on it where the living family members live.

Well, first of all...LOL! that one of the doctors was "Dr. Pepper". I've watched a few documentaries on this case and there was always a lot of "wiggle room" about his guilt in my mind. After this video....there was a bit more depth to the facts (thank you, Oddie). There is so much more circumstantial evidence floating around in my head that I'm more on the fence than ever. I always thought that he was probably innocent but now.....eeeeh...I'm not so sure. If I had to choose, I'd say that he (and his mistress) probably did do away with the wife. The wife was a horror to be sure but he wasn't a prize either. Whew! I'll have to mull this over for a while to be sure! Awesome video, thank you!
Thanks for the very kind feedback Sheri, much appreciated :) Yep it's one of those cases where you'd like to have a concrete judgement in your mind, but there's so many 'what ifs' - I doubt he would be convicted today on that evidence (unless the DNA of the remains proved positive, which we now know is an improbability.)

I'd love to see a high budget historical drama done on this story. I think the cops did plant the remains in his jammies to be sure he was found guily. Great story/video Oddie. I love hearing them, so they’re never too long. What a messed up story in the fact that Crippen never really had a happy life. Even when he was with Ethel, they couldn’t live like a normal couple. I don’t know between the 2 of them, or maybe both, decided that Ethel should wear Coras jewelry. Red flags!!! Did he get a fair trial? Murder is Murder and not to be condoned. But I don’t think Crippen got a fair trial. The evidence or lack there of, turned this case into Swiss cheese. It seems that the jury should have come back with a verdict that they could not find him guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt. And never given the death penalty. No wonder the executioner went mad. Who ever is carrying out the penalty is also committing murder. I feel sitting in a cell, no chance of parole is worse than the death penalty. Okay I’m finally stopping.

Perhaps he left with Ethel to protect any further damage to Ethel’s reputation. That was a huge concern for him. Or they just wanted a fresh start as man and wife in a new country.

Honestly, I don't know what conclusions to draw from this case. Especially considering the fact that the body found in Crippen's home was proven via DNA to be a man. To me, each possibility seems to have some merit. I'd be curious to know if there were other murder cases in that period that local police handled which had unusual circumstances as regards the finding of the body. Definitely, there's a lot of unanswered questions here.

Back then it wasn't so easy to leave without losing absolutely every shred of standing in the community. He would have lost not just money but his reputation too. A huge deal back then

unless she did it as a way to get back at her husband... think of it this way, what if she left her furs and jewelrey to get people thinking hed done away with her? as a way of getting back at him for the divorce... maybe she took the money she drew out (cause if he had that money why was he pawning her jewels?) ran off to a lover in usa or other country and hoped hed be blamed for murderering her? cause in honesty she sounds like a husband beater

Dr Crippen was born and raised in Coldwater, MI and graduated from high school in Coldwater. He moved away afterwards as did his parents. I lived in Coldwater for several years and had heard this story. It was also on a tv show. Great story telling! It's enjoyable to listen to you.

Enjoyed? I loved it! I could have listened for a lot longer. I was always interested in this case but the shows I saw did not grab my interest as well as yours did. You have such a flair for story telling. I absolutely love the pictures that come to life as well. After this new evidence/information that has come to light it does make one wonder if he was truly innocent of her murder or at the very least make Dr. Crippen's circumstances a bit more understandable. Not to say I am condoning murder in any way but if his wife humiliated him and threatened to ruin him financially and professionally, I can see in a fit of rage or desperation of becoming destitute he could have done it.

I learned of this story on a PBS station some time ago called "Secrets of Scotland Yard"and this was one of the stories that was featured ...had no idea that Cora was Crippen's second wife and that she was such a shrew...still, she didn't deserve her fate...thanks, Oddie for filling in the details! Well done! 👍
But was she actually a "shrew" or is that just what Crippen told the police and press about her? The way Oddie spun it, she was an entitled brat who wanted to be an opera singer, but she was no good. How then did she go on to earn the bulk of their money by working in an entertainment hall (presumably singing) when her husband was a doctor? Even back then doctors were not poorly paid. Also, she had all these friends that apparently cared about her, one of them loved her enough go all the way to America to figure out what happened to her. Crippen was literally the only one that disliked her that intensely. And you can't fault a woman for wanting to take mostly *her own money* to leave a man that it was proven was having an affair and who made it clear to her for years that he basically hated her. The only person in this equation that even stole anything was Crippen so he could give her things to his mistress. This just seems like a fairly clear case of projection on Crippen's part.

I never did believe that Crippen murdered his wife, make of that what you will. Many people "do a runner" from fear when the evidence is against them. It seems likely that police did plant remains, heaven knows Thats not unheard of (back then) who knows what Crippen actually WAS guilty of, there may well have been other people with their own motives involved. Every time I hear about this particular case I feel very sad. A tragic case all round. Thank you Oddie once again for a brilliant presentation!🥰

I watched it twice and am still shaking my head. For instance, if he took the head , why did he leave the scalp with hair and roots?
Scotland Yard's first visit did not detect any foul smells or anything out of place. How did they happen to walk in - the second time - and had to cover their noses?.
The DNA is that of a male, etc?

I’m convinced belle wore wigs, that’s why her hair was short on the corpse. I don’t think Crippen is innocent, but I feel bad for him having had to live with this beast. He was a broken man.
The corpse was that of an unknown male!

As crazy as it may seem I don't think he killed his wife. I think the secretary may have done it.
The wife wouldn't have left her jewelry ect behind and just taken off. And the dogs didn't find anything first time round but maybe coal had been there at the time and if so shouldn't there STILL have been coal there?
The detective was ticted that he couldn't find Jack The Ripper and wanted maybe to make a name for himself with the doctor's case. (?) He also got 500£ for 'cracking' the case!!!
' IF ' the bits of a body was found in the COAL BIN then how was the body bits 'found' by 'lose bricks' that 'THE DETECTIVE' happened (?) to find.
Also the PJ TOP with 'that' label was the only bit of clothing 'found' and in the Dr's dresser the PJ's bottom (but no top) was found. Did they ever check the 'OTHER' PJ's in the dresser?
ALSO if one wants to get rid of a body why chop it up, all that nasty & messy work to then dump some body bits in the celler of YOUR own home. THEN put the wrong LIME on the body bits ? The lime on the bits PRESERVED the stuff found ...the OTHER LIME would have DISTORYED IT. I think the detective may have put the stuff there & the lime that was used to make sure there was the stuff to be found. (Just my guess)
Don't you think the doctor would have known what kind of lime to use and IF he killed his wife wouldn't he want to get rid of the WHOLE remains?
If the detective didn't set the stuff then maybe BOTH the doctor and his lover got rid of the wife then not wanting to get caught tried to 'split'. Guess we may never know.
The secretary wasn't the nicest person in my opinion and she certainly 'cashed in' on the case afterwords, PLUS she went to great lengths to change her name like how many times?
Hyoscine Hydrobromide was also used in abortions. Didn't you mention that the doctor's wife had a still born?
There is a street sgin with Crippen's family name on it where the living family members live.

Well, first of all...LOL! that one of the doctors was "Dr. Pepper". I've watched a few documentaries on this case and there was always a lot of "wiggle room" about his guilt in my mind. After this video....there was a bit more depth to the facts (thank you, Oddie). There is so much more circumstantial evidence floating around in my head that I'm more on the fence than ever. I always thought that he was probably innocent but now.....eeeeh...I'm not so sure. If I had to choose, I'd say that he (and his mistress) probably did do away with the wife. The wife was a horror to be sure but he wasn't a prize either. Whew! I'll have to mull this over for a while to be sure! Awesome video, thank you!

Yep it's one of those cases where you'd like to have a concrete judgement in your mind, but there's so many 'what ifs' - I doubt he would be convicted today on that evidence (unless the DNA of the remains proved positive, which we now know is an improbability.)
Don’t think he deserves to be treated like Cristie from 10 Rillington place, a real psychopath!!
Thought if he’d stayed and seen the policeman from Scotland Yard one more time he’d have been ok!

Great story/video Oddie. I love hearing them, so they’re never too long. What a messed up story in the fact that Crippen never really had a happy life. Even when he was with Ethel, they couldn’t live like a normal couple. I don’t know between the 2 of them, or maybe both, decided that Ethel should wear Coras jewelry. Red flags!!! Did he get a fair trial? Murder is Murder and not to be condoned. But I don’t think Crippen got a fair trial. The evidence or lack there of, turned this case into Swiss cheese. It seems that the jury should have come back with a verdict that they could not find him guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt. And never given the death penalty. No wonder the executioner went mad. Who ever is carrying out the penalty is also committing murder. I feel sitting in a cell, no chance of parole is worse than the death penalty. Okay I’m finally stopping.

If she withdrew the money than it was in her possession, right? How was he going to get from her? Seems she wore the pants in that marriage.
